A nice vinyl picture that has TWO hetero combos that can be illustrated :

n+dhh v/s n+dh

I plan to post three more vinyls that will illustrate WHAT ONE MAY COME ACROSS IN OLD MALAYALAM / HAND-WRITING etc but cannot be seen in UNICODE.

Those who believe that they'll NEVER EVER step out of unicode territory can skip these three vinyl covers but it could help those who plan to visit Kerala at any point of time in their lives Wink

It's because one will still see lot of hoardings / business sign boards etc that use such "more complicated combo letters" that UNICODE does not care to reproduce. (Neither does the NEW MALAYALAM script I think).

So, while it's optional, it could still prove to be useful Smile

Look at the way "ptha" is written in this vinyl cover, which is obviously different from what I typed in unicode / google transliterate:

പ്തസ്വരങ്ങൾ / sapthaswarangngaL / ஸப்தஸ்வரங்ஙள் / सप्तस्वरंग्गल

Similarly, look at how "ykku" is written in this vinyl cover (BTW, the movie was quite famous in TN during my high school days as an A padam and I've seen posters with a big A letter Laughing )

And a last one, look at how s gets combined to ph /f that gets placed in the bottom (and unicode does not do such combo):

സ്ഫോടനം / sphOdanam / ஸ்ஃபோடனம் / स्फोटनम

That is the last CRACKER vinyl for the thread...now two more quizzes and we'll be done with Phase 1 Smile

It's too tough for me Smile. I am hearing some letters for the first time, as I didn't go through your lessons properly. I have given a try, please let me know the mistakes and the sentence meaning too. Smile I will post answers for the next 5 tomorrow.

You're doing excellent, V_Sji!

Other than very few typical places that a Thamizh reader initially slips (ഴക്കമുള്ള = pazhakkamuLLa, സ്ഥാപനമാണ് = sthhApanamANu, കുട്ടി‌ = kutti, കൗമാരത്തിലേക്കു = kaumAraththilEkku) everything appears to be ok!

Obviously, speed is something that will increase with practice Smile

Following are the English meanings of the first five (in white font, select with mouse to view, just in case others are trying to write test):
1. How can (one) lead a happy life?
2. Of all the known human institutions, the oldest is family!
3. In prior generations, children had opportunities to play, tell stories and share (with older people).
4. If we get two days off, we'll think what about a trip Smile
5. As children enter teenage, their interactions and behaviours undergo major changes.

Thanks a lot app ji for clarifying certain words. Still I am struggling little bit when combining certain letters. Anyway gave my try for the next five. I have doubts on the ending letters too.

aaROgyamaaya oru jeevithachaRyayaanO niNgahL pulaRththippOrunnath?

Great job on the second five too, V_Sji!

Few minor (start-up) glitches...nashtappetunnathinte, nithya jeevithaththil > nithyajeevithangaLil , varunna & the 'kutriyalukaram' ending business.

Like you rightly observed ("doubts on the ending letters"), you'll notice that many words are ending with consonant symbol where there should be an "u" symbol.

I have explained this somewhere in the thread and also while showcasing some vinyl covers, the 'u' is "UNDERSTOOD" to be present, even though it is not explicitly written Smile

When I do the transliteration, you can observe the places where such phenomenon occurs...(e.g.untaakaaruntu in the ending of #6)

Friday the 31st I should be posting the answers to the final test and also officially completing the phase 1 of this program.

(Interestingly, the other vinyl thread - in the IR section - should also be completed of the "phase 1" aka "completing musicalaya covers" by the end of this week / month).

Quite interesting exercises for me by leeching that website Smile

Obviously, the Phase 2 of this Malayalam reading program will have to be a little advanced and I cannot be doing the "vinyl cover gimmick" kinds for such serious studies.

Also, I guess that thread should be in the 'karuththu kandhasamy corner' or another forum because it would be going out of the "Indian films" realm...

padippichchittundenkilum
nashtappetunnathinte
bahumaanikkentathu
jeevithachaRyayaanO
pulaRththippOrunnathu

The key is to break the word into meaningful portions and then read (much like seyyuL Thamizh) :

padippichchittundenkilum = படிப்பிச்சிட்டுண்டு + எங்கிலும்

nashtappetunnathinte = நஷ்டப் + பெடுன்னதின்டெ

bahumaanikkentathu = பஹுமானிக் + கேண்டது

jeevithachaRyayaanO = ஜீவித + சர்யயானோ

pulaRththippOrunnathu = புலர்த்திப் + போருன்னது

It doesn't hurt EVEN TO PAUSE in-between such combined words, at meaningful places Smile That'll enhance listener comprehension in fact!

Learn to READ Malayalam - using vinyl ("LP" record) covers and such movie-based resources - Page 10 Empty Re: Learn to READ Malayalam - using vinyl ("LP" record) covers and such movie-based resources

While I strongly recommend to follow the "flow of this thread" for any beginner, I do understand that sometimes it helps to have this in PDF format (for ease of use with some devices).

Accordingly, here is the download / view link for those who desire a PDF for this "course" :

Enjoy!

App ji,
We have to thank you for this initiative. What an effort! noteworthy I never dreamed that I will learn Malayalam, that too with a perfect guide like you. You made it so easy. Also the way you presented with film posters and the frequency with which you posted the lessons and quiz everything was remarkable. Thanks is not enough, but big big thanks to you. Very Happy
