Let's collect the pictures of the LP record covers in this thread.

Let's not dismiss it to be just an exercise of capturing & archiving such rare treasures. We can definitely spin discussions around them, throw in some nostalgia, clear long outstanding doubts etc.

Let me start with the first IR movie released, annakkiLi.

It should be interesting to know that annakkiLi reportedly shattered the previous record of 'elanthappazham...chekkachchevantha pazham' in disc sales.

It was either kumudam or vikatan that claimed it those days when celebrating 'machchAnappAththeengaLA', the fantastic SJ number that catapulted IR into fame!

Also, we can see from the disc cover that all songs are crediting Panju Arunachalam as the lyricist. While he would have made a number of "fixes" to some existing folk songs for cine field (and thus rightly earns the lyricist credits), the originals must be acknowldeged at this point of time

As per a recent video on 'iLayathaLam' (was it supposed to be IR's official facebook page), the original folk song for 'annakkiLi onnaththEdudhE' had 'puLLi pOtta ravikkaikkAri' as the "pallavi" (or starting lines) and the "annakki-i-Li onnaththEduthE" occured in the middle. That got rotated around by the Panju-IR team to fit the filmy requirements!

The second biggest patti-thotti hit for rAsA : bathrakALi!

The songs kEttELE ingE, kaNNan oru kaikkuzhandhai & oththa roovA onakkuththArEn were heard in horn speakers around TN - in every function, vizhA, thiruvizhA etc.

The song kEttELE was banned in AIR and didn't get air time while kaNNan oru kaikkuzhandhai was their darling

The front cover featuring Rani Chandra (as told in the IR-PS thread, she got killed in air crash prior to the movie's completion and a double was used)...Malayali actress who looks like a "mix" of Sujatha & K R Vijaya...


Rear cover has IR & ACT pictures.

Couldn't easily get hold of disc covers for uRavAdum nenjam & pAlootti vaLarththa kiLi, the other two 1976 movies of rAsA.

So, moving on to 1977 films.

If someone gets hold of the vinyls / covers of these two movies, please upload the pictures and share the links in this thread.

(I would like to limit to "record" covers...however, for some rare ones, even the inlay cards of cassettes will be appreciated if such collections help to identify lyricists and other details hitherto unknown or not much discussed).

Second year of IR, 1977, brought some other heroes to work with IR. Remarkably, NT. However, he was still doing more movies with Sivakumar...

kuyilE kavikkuyilE was a big hit for IR-SJ combo. The kavikkuyil movie also had the evergreen BMK number 'chinnakkaNNan azhaikkiRAn'

Back cover shows only three songs (the SJ version of 'chinnakkaNNan' is not in this disk). Interestingly, only IR's pic is here (no director / lyricist)...

OK, time to load the first NT movie composed by IR

deepam, with that delectable 'poovizhil vAsalil yAradi vandhadhu kiLiyE kiLiyE'...

Front cover, as expected, features Sivaji prominently and shows the heroini Sujatha too:
(BTW, the "Suresh" of Suresh arts, the production company, must be the son of actor Balaji and now the brother-in-law of Malayalam icon Mohan Lal)



Back cover has rAsA's picture ; gives the info that all songs got penned by Pulamaippiththan. (I think he was a MGR regular those days, possibly was in ADMK also...interesting to see him writing for Sivaji).

No other 1977 cover is seen in our present hunting ground...since this is our first target, let's get all those AVAILABLE, QUICKLY (as much chronologically linear as possible) and then worry about others

That way, let me get some 1978-ers today...

Let's get the movie of the song that Gautam sang in the NEPV audio launch...uRavukaL thodarkathai is from 'avaL appadiththAn' starring Kamal & Rajini. The 'avaL' is Sripriya.

Like the others, the rear cover has IR's picture. Three nice songs, perhaps the first song sung by KH under IR's baton was 'panneer pushpangaLE' (not very sure).

Interstingly, no Rudraiah name on this disk wrapper...

Another disk cover that does not list the name of the director - Bairavi

Looks like it wasn't that big a deal those days, espcially if the director was a newcomer or someone without much acclaim. IIRC, this movie was produced by KalaignAnam who was in the business for at least another decade...

Rajanikanth & Snake featured in the front cover (giving one a 'dEvar films' / 'rAma nArayana' feeling). The posters were similar and until I came to tfmpage, I automatically assumed that those TMS songs were by Shankar-Ganesh Even after knowing that those were by IR, I'm yet to develop friendliness to the naNdooruthu nariyooruthu & kattappuLLa kuttppuLLa...



Rear cover has IR...three songs by Kavingar and the fourth one by someone not much known to me...

Back to Sivamainthar...is this chittukkurvi ( looks like parunthu ) Sumithra?

The movie had the evergreen 'en kaNmaNee un kAdhali' sung by akkA-thambi (IMO) and let Vali have some fun.




Raja's pic is as usual featured in the rear cover. Though the movie was directed by Devaraj-Mohan (the first director pair who released a movie with IR), their names are missing on the disk cover...

WOW! WOW! Never seen any of these before. Where are you getting this from? Pls keep posting these details. I came into Raja music 1988. So all these first hand info is gold!

T N Balu's 'sattam en kayil' is the first Kamal solo movie disk cover that comes to this thread 'sorgam madhuvilE' - such a cracker of a SPB song from this movie is still evergreen!

Apart from Kamal, heroini Sripriya too gets some space on the front cover:


Rear cover has the rAsA pic as usual...all songs are, of course, by "sorgam madhuvilE" Kavingar

BR's first movie - 16 vayathinilE - the movie had Kamal, Rajini & Sridevi - all three of whom went on to rule the film world, not just of TN but beyond.

The front cover features scene from 'manjakkuLichchu' song and the rear 'Attukkutty muttai ittu's.


IR's pic is there as usual in the rear cover...note the names of lyricists for each song 'chOLam vedhakkayilE' missing...

1978 must be a milestone year for the IR-BR combo, they didn't stop with the phenomenal success of BR's debut movie 16 vayathinilE but followed up with another 300 day kind of hit (I have seen newspaper ads those days) with two newcomers in lead roles

Radhika & Sudhakar had their debut in kizhakkE pOgum rayil and IR greeted them with phenomenal songs!
(Goundamani did the joLLu villain role in this film as RadhikA's akkA purushan)...I can't control my looking at Sudhakar's meesai...

And, that combo didn't stop with two!

In the same year, they had another silver jubilee hit - with Kamal Sridevi!

A hat-trick in 1978 for BR!

IIRC, sigappu rOjAkkaL was a deepavaLi release...


Now, it was time for BR to make it to the vinyl's cover :-) Also, it appeared they signed up with INRECO around this time! (All the prior covers were EMI's and this shows INRECO logo. I have a red color INRECO CD that has the 'ninaivO oru paRavai' song)

As mentioned in a prior post, right now I'm working on getting things from this one place ASAP (copyright issue could wipe that site out as Wizzy feared)...so, I won't be able to stick to this chronology thingy strictly.

That music temple site has a lot of record cover pictures for Priya.

First of all, the first TFM STEREO album had to be initially released in two 45 rpm disks (4 songs in one, 1 in another with a repeat).

Plus Sridevi swimsuit / Singapore pics etc.

In addition, they've also found a record that had both Priya & 6-60 varai :-)

So, 8 images in total! Let me get them one by one here...

#1 Possibly the front cover of the first disk - featuring Rajini & Sridevi (hEy pAdal onRu scene, I think)


#2 Lists the four songs, has the pictures of IR, SP Muthuraman, Panju Arunachalam
(sree rAmanin sree dEviyE song is missing in this disk, so they needed another disk for that alone)


#3 Some movie screenshots, Singapore viLambarams I think...


#4 The famous Sridevi poster (swimsuit) that was on every wall those days in towns


#5 The second disk's front page (some generic pictures)


#6 The song listing of second disk - one repeat plus the climax song


Now, the front side of the priya-6/60 combo disk (different producers, same music company INRECO, same director, same Panju sAr for writing etc:

Now, 1978 is the time Rajini's career best (acting-wise) came out - Mahendran's debut movie muLLum malarum.

Well, it has come back and I've re-started my gleaning...1978 continues...

kARRinilE varum geetham - one of the biggest radio hits of those days with SLBC having at least one song each day those days

OTOH, the back cover has the pictures of IR / PA / SPM...and lists only four songs (so there's no mention of the one plum had been searching for, the elusive PS version of kaNdEn engum...I've never heard it and wonder if it really exists)...Regardless, what a lovely, lovely album it is!

This one is a lovely SJ-PJ number, frequently played on radio those days...

Definitely never listened to the other three numbers One interesting thing about the album is, it has a L R Eswari song, one of the very few she sang for IR! (In the same song, MV sings in a 'AhA vandhuruchchoo' style changed voice)..
