Start 1988 with the biggie of the year... actually, one of the biggest albums of TFM history, IR-MR combo, agni natchaththiram!

All songs written by Vaali...two terrific SJ solos, one fantastic KSC solo, two lovely KJY duets (one with SJ another with KSC) and one IR jolly song with only percussion & base guitar, no other karuvi -simbly vocal harmony manipulation

Three Kamal movies listed for 1988, all with IR - Sathya / Soora samhAram / unnAl mudiyum thambi.

Both pictures are available for Sathya, only one pic for UMT and none for soora samhAram at musicalaya.

Rajini had two movies with IR - dharmaththin thalaivan & guru sishyan. He also did 'kodi paRakkudhu' with BR (Hamsalekha MD).

Once again, Vaali had max share in DT & GS...










IIRC, Guru Sishyan was the debut for Gauthami...

Vijayakanth had 3 albums with IR in 1988 - each had some really nice songs

The lovely 'theRkaththikkaLLan' that had SJ's "rAdhA azhaikkiRAL" & SPB's "pottu vachchuppAkkappOREn"...





Then there was 'poonthOttak kAvalkAran' with the terrific 'ennuyirE vA' by SPB-KSC! It had KJY doing 'gAnakkarunguyilE', a lovely themmAngu.

All songs were written by GA. I used to think that the kuRumbu song 'sindhiya veNmaNi sippiyil muththAchchu' was by Vaali





The third one didn't have that much famous songs but moderate hits only. 'En purushan dhAn, enakku mattum dhAn'.

I see a new singer "Lalitha Sree" listed and she sings exactly like "Bhava"dharini

i thought manadhil ore oru and pullaikkooda paadavaitha were big hits.. fantastic songs and is it not funny to look at manobala's picture?

poo mudiththu pottu vaiththa vatta nila is a big hit too and I remember listening frequently on radio.

1988 - pAlakkAdan bachelor days - my "hit" evaluation is limited to weekly visits to Cbe and monthly visits to home town.

So, my comments on "hit status" could be way off the mark (அதாவது 'சீரியஸா எடுத்துக்கப்டாது'ங்றேன்)

thiraippAdal lists FIVE grAmarAjan movies with rAsA for 1988 - enga ooru kAvakkAran, ennai vittuppOgAthE, pArththAl pasu, rAsAvE unnai nambi & sheNbagamE sheNbagamE!

Another Prabhu movie, a musical...oruvar vAzhum Alayam, with those beauties malayOram mayilE veLayAdum kuyilE , nee paurNami & pallaviyE saraNam...

I V Sasi's "illam" (supposedly the remake of Malayalam sanmanasuLLavarkku samAdhAnam)..

Sweet 'nandhavanam' song by SPB (GA wrote all songs it says)...

Another "all written by GA" movie - dhAyam onnu (I love the SPB-PS number 'manadhilE oru pAttu', sweet)...

There is a Pandiarajan movie and I'm not familiar with songs other than 'kAlangArththAlE' (thiraippAdal wrongly states Vijayakanth)...uLLam kavarndha kaLvan

Now, one of my favourite movies - by Fazil - en bommukkutty ammAvukku (remake of 'ente mAmAttukkutty ammaikku', supposedly the debut of Baby Shalini).

IR's kaNNE navamaNiyE is such a moving song! There are also uyire / chithirachchittukaL / kuyilakkA & bommukkutty ammAvukku...pAvalar creations aka IR's family production

R Sundarrajan, who is now doing chiththirai nilAchchOru with IR, had this lovely 'en jeevan pAdudhu' album in 1988.

The songs 'orE muRai un dharisanam' & 'katti vachchukkO' were regular bed-time companions for many bachelor days...

The LM song 'engirundhO azhaikkum' got penned by IR it says. ok song, not as frequently played as the other two

Interesting to see that Panju Arunachalam directed a movie in 1988 - maNamagaLE vA!

Nice songs but don't think they were big hits...most are first time listens to me (and the movie too first time I hear about)...

Lakshmi's husband (2nd? 3rd?) Sivachandran directed her in 'ennuyir kaNNammA'...had some folk songs that got played frequently on radio / buses...Prabhu, Radha also seen in the pictures...

The Ramki movie that I heard about only when V_Sji wrote about the 'nArinil poo thoduththu' song

(Interestingly, since RR sir has become practically "inactive" in the hub, that thread still has this song in its title )

pAdum paRavaigaL - Karthik Banupriya movie, a dubbed one of Telugu anvEshanA ("thriller" by Vamsi)...

Wiki says the Telugu movie was a 1985-er. Why did it take 3 years to dub and release in Thamizh? I'm confused. Also, all songs are written by Vairamuthu (as was the norm during the early 80's for dubbing-biggies - salangai oli, sippikkuL muthu etc). IMG, there are two possibilities : either the producers went ahead with VM without IR's approval (1988 was after their ladAi) or the album got completed much earlier - say in 1986 - and only the release happened in 1988. (I cannot authenticate this 1988 thingy, it's told by thiraippAdal and some other websites like Thamizh wiki...my memory cannot confirm it as I didn't watch the movie. I had the cassette and both keeravANi & EkAntha vELai were big favourites)...

Haneefa's "pAsappaRavaigaL" vinyl cover cannot be found in musicalaya. Interestingly, he did another movie for the DMK group, "pAdAdha thEneekkaL" it seems...

One more Lakshmi movie - orE oru grAmaththilE (this one was not by her hubby)

The last vinyl cover we have for 1988 (i.e. for now)...sakkarai pandhal (directed by GA it seems, another "Saranraj" movie)

1989 was an outrageous year for rAsA - a year of biggy biggies...

Let's start with the one where he shared top honors (as the hero or director cannot be called top stars in their own might...actually Goundamani / Senthil combo can also compete for the main spot in the success story )

Then we had 'aboorva sagOdharargaL' with 3 Kamals - one of the biggest successes in the glittering career of Kamal...Appu still regarded as one of his finest performances!

All songs written by Vaali & some exceptional singing by SPB in this album!

rAjAthi rAjA - family production by rAsA & had Rajinikanth in dual role (with Radha & Nadhiya)...I believe the movie was made in remarkably short time and became a big success...directed by R Sundarrajan.

The agni natchaththiram song (rAjAdhi rAjan indha rAjA) is played as an interlude in one of the songs, what a nice (self) tribute to the maestro
