Re: Manadhil oru paattu - Song of the moment - Vol 1
V_S wrote:We are listening to various kinds of music daily, albums and songs are releasing daily. As Maestro says, music directors need not meet, they have to question and answer through their music. To me, I am still searching for answers to this wonderful piece of music all around. I have never been so moved listening to any piece of music as this one. With visuals it multiplies a lot. Maestro has used just one line of Sri Rama Lera (dheeramathiyai nyaaya pathiyai yelu raghupathiyai) and built this whole theme of 1:30 minute piece of music. If you find answers to this one, please let me know. I bet you can't.
http://www.fileden.com/files/2012/9/16/3348123/07-Ramas%20Last%20Glance.mp3
I have written in little detail about it here. I was reading my post today as suddenly this music struck me. When I read the last paragraph, without my knowledge, I could not control myself. I am posting it not to boast, only to share that precious moment with you all.
http://maestroworld.wordpress.com/2012/11/18/sri-rama-rajyam-ramas-last-glance/
Please don't miss watching the visuals as you hear the music. My night will be spent with this score and Sri Rama Lera (also included in that post). We may vanish, earth may vanish still the soul in that song (which is that 1:30 minute score) will sound as long as the last bit of ether is present.
Read your blog. Great research and analysis. Raja is so great in connecting some of this simple ideas. Enjoyed it.

Re: Manadhil oru paattu - Song of the moment - Vol 1
Thanks Senthil.
Was listening to my semi-classical playlist. KoondhalilE megham vanthu and Mandhiram ithu. At the surface of it, it looks a pure classical and even devotional (if we don't concentrate on lyrics), but inside (the lyrics), avvaLavum 'attuzhiyam', very very naughty! Eppadi intha maathiri divine tune'kku intha maathiri lyrics ezhutha mudhichuthu. BhagavanE!
Definitely I got fooled by the start Mandhiram Ithu, but during charanams... Another surprising thing about this song is it is the title song. Other songs in this movie are totally unrelated to this classical number, need to see why Maestro composed such a title song again for the movie where all other songs are quite different. Incidentally this film again is based on sea-shore and its people.

Kadha Thudarunnu, Sneha veedu and Puthiya TheerangaL back to back. Every one of them is a classic! Most of them are haunting! Some of them are too emotional! None of them can be skipped!

One song leads to another (i.e. in youtube)
From 'pAda vandhadhO gAnam' (for the IR-PS thread), I got directed to another Sasikala song that happened to be a Telugu version of 'rAsAvE onna kANAtha nenju kAththAdi pOlAduthE', sung by SJ :-)
(Orchestration ditto, possibly using the "track")

counterpart to 'puththam pudhu poo'
Stumbled on to Manjal Poosum from Chakkarai devan.
From the starting of the pallavi - it is an intriguing song - the song starts out plain and simple - but soon the anu pallavi kicks in and the
connection to the unborn child of thaLabadhi - the bhanupriya - Rajini consummation song Puthambudhu poo pooththadho dawns.
This cousin of that song bears the same emotional heaviness the unpicturized beauty has. The 'heaviness' is probably a result of a love
that triumphs obstacles as hinted by 'kaaval yaedhu, kattukkaL yaedhu' line. Malaysia surprisingly has been thrust with the job of performing this
tight rope walk of a song with Janaki and any given day I would have said 'Bad choice" - but in here he makes the perfect rendition possible and surprised me totally - sometimes even trumping Janaki!!
Special attention should be paid to the tabla in the interludes - this is called "dancing on the edge of knife" - extremely dicey..
Honest - have you seen the movie and the song? can you add more to this?

Don't talk about the picturisation. Now, Imagine Captain in veshti, with his typical viraha expression. Imagine suganya doing her kONa vAi sEshtai(vekkamAmAm). Imagine Captain and Suganya thus attired and facially postured and purandufying in sagadhi.

Sopper singer oru madhiri Ippo Swamigal paatta cover panraan. Paavatha kazhuva voip. The orchestra is also much better than the one they used to have

hariharan excels in raaja songs if the song has a ghazalish or hindusthani feel to it..
Even 'en mana vaanil' from kaasi had a distinct old world hindi feel to it..

You may be on to something there Jai...though I HATE en mana vaanl(and other Kasi songs) from the bottom of my heart - not indifference, but plain HATE, it triggers something deeply "Nandu" in me - I can immediately think of AAro Paddunnu dhoore as corroborating your theory.

Re: Manadhil oru paattu - Song of the moment - Vol 1
Bala - enakku ennamO Kasi songs pidikkalai. Karigaran might be a reason...basically, the simple percussion instrument in en mana vaanil, is it the same as the one in "ammamA thambi endru nambi" from Rajapart Rangadurai? (Similar?)
That's one song with barely a tune in the saranams, yet absolutely love it. NT and Kannadasan might have a lot to do with it but a fairly unique song from MSV.
(enakku that song always gnAbagam varum en mana vaanil kekkarachE - though the two tunes have no snAna prApthi - thats why the reference)

that song is a looose song - konjam illai nerayave izuthu paadara singer only can connect the dots and make sense of the composition... andha 'ormai vannu or umma tharum pole' - what a landing and hari acquits rather well in handling that toughie.plum wrote:You may be on to something there Jai...though I HATE en mana vaanl(and other Kasi songs) from the bottom of my heart - not indifference, but plain HATE, it triggers something deeply "Nandu" in me - I can immediately think of AAro Paddunnu dhoore as corroborating your theory.

me too. Malayalam Raja for the past two days (it will extend for many days). Hariharan sang amruthamayi (may be again pronunciation he might have slipped) really really well. The song really suits him well for his typical minute sangathis. Fantastic!
Mizhineeril… Mizhineeril thelivanin kanavaai nee
Mozhi thOrum puthu mannil nanavai nee
Oru palazhi pol-nenjil neeyennum
Mindi konjan vembum chundil panjamruthamaai (the way he extends maa.....aaaai!)
Chimmi chimmi minnum kannil kanni nilavaai
Janma janma theeram pulkum, mandakini nee
Prapanjangalaake niranjidum mElE (that fluttering guitar during the breaks!)
Manathaaril kathirai nee viriyenam
Oru thaarattai ennullil charu nee (that charu nee, ahA! what an ending!)
What a juicy tune and pleasing orchestration in every line! AppadiyE karanju poidlaam pOla thonuthu. Is it kalyani? Very very rich, grand but at the same time earthy and grounded.

Ha Ha - I definitely think it good that Mani is not with IR.
However, I would just like Mani coming back to IR for one movie *now*, just so that I can enjoy the spectacle of hubbers Daddy, Lotion etc disowning Alai Paayuthae, Thiruda Thiruda etc

Re: Manadhil oru paattu - Song of the moment - Vol 1
One of *those* days, restlessly roaming around, not settling on any particular thought or a song, extreme mood swings and I miraculously and accidentally land on this song.
Repeating an old write up - Look how many emotions are conveyed here. The mystery beneath the chords, the yearning in the tune (ably propped up by the ever dependable Malaysia Vasudevan), the seduction in the female chorus (could spot Chithra and Shailaja) - the club ambiance, the loneliness, suspense and melancholy all balancing out each other and coming together fascinating and intriguing whole. Smoky, Spooky and Sexy.
Whoever wrote the lyrics

Aravind, this song has been appearing very frequent in my shuffle mode of IR collection (thumb drive) in my car. Been thinking about it a lot. What appears to be a normal funk/jazz number, takes on a new height when MV's vocal comes in. A goddam dance song and our man is bleeding sad! He's drowning in his sorrow and as Bono puts it, "drowning in my sorrow, but my sorrow, they learned to swim". It perfectly captured a man stuck in irretrievable past*. Loving this song more, considering I am....tooo....oh, fuck that....

Aravind,
Superb pick! There are zillions of emotions in that song. As you quoted, the charanam, it starts very casually, but during these lines 'ஏனென்றும் தெரியாது ஏக்கங்கள் புரியாது ஏற்றிய பாரம் தாங்காது இறக்கிட நீயும் வா ஏங்கிய உள்ளம் தூங்காது அமைதியை மீண்டும் தா', Maestro gradually builds the tune and goes for the crescendo and drops off. As the tune goes up the lyrics goes down asking for 'இறக்கிட' and 'அமைதியை'. This is one of iconic song from Maestro and for MV and impossible to conceive by anyone else.
