CK, this movie also has the other song 'naan kaadhalil pudhu pAdagan' (sung by Jayachandran) that one can so easily stack up with kannan vandhu paadugindran, mandram vandha thendral and the likes. That sweet sound of bass & acoustic drumming... oh! 

I wouldn't stack it up against those songs but that's more on account of Jayachandran's strangely vacant singing on this song (I normally like his singing) as compared to the passionate vocals of SPB and SJ respectively in those songs.  The music is brilliant, as usual.

About Naan Kadhalil Pudhu Padagan, I wonder if the version posted above is one of this digitally remastered 'revival' versions where the singer was asked to record it again by the recording company.  The reason I ask is Jayachandran's voice sounds much lighter and livelier in this clip of the same song.



There are some such versions of old classics delivered by an ageing Manna Dey and Mahendra Kapoor, as applicable, that they sometimes play on the radio.  I am not aware that such a thing was done to any 80s IR songs but the feel is noticeably different on this clip compared to the one posted earlier.

CK - the other version is from CD, converted to youtube with just a still, this one is from the DVD. May be, you are asking some thing else.

Then it may be that something is lost in transferring from vinyl to CD (in which case the DVD should not sound different  ).  I think I noticed something like this in Vazhi Vidu Vazhi Vidu also, one version has much more heavy sounding vocals than the other.

Thanks a lot for sharing.  I haven't heard it before either.  And overwhelmed just halfway through.  The arrangements accompanying the pallavi remind me vaguely of the 80s acid jazz band Incognito.  Similar combination of awesome slap bass with (Western) flute.

CDs are not from vinyl. The ones from vinyl are an exception when the master tapes are lost. Master tapes are good quality, either in mono, later stereo or in digital stereo. The songs are transferred to films in whatever audio technology was available those days (usually in mono). DVDs are made from the film masters are mostly in mono. Because of these reasons CDs are much better quality than DVDs.

Thanks from the explanation.  Maybe the stereo effect itself makes the sound fuller and therefore a little heavier.  I somehow prefer the 'lower quality' sound from the film master for these old analog recordings.

Slightly evokes Oru Vaanavil Pole, but what a lovely beautiful song this! Earworm for the day. Discovered this on FM while traveling to work in the morning. Easy to identify right away it is IR from the orchestration and how the vocals sound. SOTD for me.

oh man .. I did not know Shobha died at 17 !!! She looks more mature in the movies. My respect for BM has gone down too much. Indian Film Industry exploits young girls too much. Many of these film folks would be in prison for child abuse if it were US laws.

Shobha's wiki page confirms it (Born '62 died '80)

That she was in cine field many years as child artist could be the reason for the maturity in looks / acting etc
(Who knows, she was possibly exposed to many ugly facts of life at a tender age...mother too actress it seems, per wiki...possibly didn't even get a chance to develop as a normal adult and eventually killed herself when still in teens...well, it's still a dispute if it were a Athma hathyA or vadham )
