It is not intended to compete with theater. It's a different issue if it ends up there

what if prevents movie goers from reaching theater (within one month of movie premiere? what is VR a thuppaakki to be scared of being out of halls withing a month?)? I dont buy the shit that the dhananjayan is saying that theatre occupancy for Rajini kamal movie also will trend those of vijay, ajith and vikram releases and so with DTH VR will reach more ppl. If it is a kamal film, there will be block buster opening and a long run. Kamal can release DTH after 4 months or so.

This is why theatre owners are getting scared - coz kamal is not just opening a new tech stream for movies - he is opening a pandora's box.
Sun TV and likes are going to have big smile on their faces. forget VR - if every small and medium budget movie maker does DTH first - theaters can kiss good bye - already big screens are dead - now multiplexes will also find a huge challenge which in the current indian urban traffic scenario there will be little incentive for folks to venture to movie halls.

A few points to be considered:

I am convinced that KH is genuinely trying to open up another stream of revenue which is unlikely to impact theatre occupancy.Are you saying that a DTH release will result in empty halls on Day 1?

DTH is targetted at the people who are unlikely to turn out to the theatre and it's the right thought.

People who watch on TV are always the guys who are in two minds about going out.A % of them might end up venturing out but there is no way you can look at them as a steady theatre audience.

Yes,there is going to be some collateral damage as in a small % of the theatre going crowd might use this option but I feel it will more than compensate with the extra audience DTH will garner.

Theatre owners are rightly shocked but they have to be handled properly.There is no fun now in demanding fancy amounts from them(another issue that they were unwilling to pay prior to this too).Instead depending on the centres he should enter into MOU's where he assures them that he will book the theatres for a fixed period of time.Then devise a slab system of sharing i.e if collections are X Rs and above,it will shared in a prefixed ratio but if collection dips below Rs Y,then he will pay a rent for the period.

That way,owners too are safe.

The reason for pushing this now could probably be retribution for the treatment he has got from them but should not take away focus from what this will achieve.

Single screens I agree are in a dire situation but things are not going to improve-DTH or not.

There are many forms of entertainment available now and people will flock to the theatres only if they like the content through WOM.Star Power will only ensure a opening and nobody can sustain only with that.

Wrt multiplexes,they are very expensive and nobody(even with high disposable incomes)are going to flock to them on monthly basis.

The crowd which visits the theatres regularly are the die hard fans and college kids.

Going forward,returns from theatres are going to come down and theatre owners too have to think of alternatives.

For a producer,money is going to come in from DTH,theatrical release,Home Video,music rights and satellite rights in varying percentages.

More importantly,this will be a big boon for small films who nobody likes to touch.With the confidence that there is a chance of recovery/profit,more people will get encouraged to make films and the talent pool is only going to go up.

For the biggies,another stream to cover costs.

Now,your another question-Why before release and not after?Because Valuation will come down whether it's a BB,Hit or flop.

Nervous is an understatement.Am very tensed,do not want a boycott happening in which case he will have no option but to backout.

Also,Rightly or wrongly,he has kept himself out of politics and so can expect Zero support from the party in power or the opposition which is virtually controlling the industry.

Getting producers on his side was a smart move but will they remain with him if pressure becomes intense is a ?

Mothathula,today will decide where the industry goes from here but I feel even if this plan comes a cropper now,the seed has been sown and it will grow,very fast.
