What a classic!
I grew up with Raja's music is my fortune!
Wonderful chorus, grand bass guitar & seductive and mellifluous flute & strings for a lovely tune in buttery S.P.B's romantic vocal!
Erotism in 1 st interlude...REPEAT!

Very rare youtube, link posted by SKV on twitter:
It's not very clear who is the girl on screen...I don't think it is JJ.
However, this movie (nathiyai thEdi vandha kadal) had JJ, perhaps the only IR-JJ combo.
The song got featured in the IR-GA thread sometime back but first time I'm seeing the video...

The first time I heard this song was probably on the radio. Never knew about the visuals for a long time. And then, in college, a friend showed me this and ever since, I have been undecided whether to laugh or cry.
This was 1979, so Raja had just begun his sophisticated WCM+ICM exploration phase and clearly this is very much in the vein of many early 80s classics. The song as such is a delicate balance of sensuality and pathos ( sort of like "Enna satham indha neram"). But unlike "Punnagai mannan", I haven't seen the movie, so I don't know if this was the requirement of the situation. And the visuals don't help much in figuring this out.
The female chorus is beautiful and besides the fantastic guitar chord progression and catchy strum and bass patterns, the usage of wind instruments is noteworthy. The low pitch anxious western flute (we know why Ha! ) a la Putham pudhu kaalai in the prelude, carnatic flute supported by chorus in the 1st interlude and oboe in the second (backed by a very catchy rhythm guitar!). I am listing this just to highlight how Raja evokes sensuality by creating a certain soundscape - by employing precisely certain instruments at certain precise pivotal moments in the song.
Now note how the carnatic flute in the 2nd interlude momentarily evokes a sort of karuna rasa, and the way the guitar and piano chromatic run immediately following the flute resolves this and leads back to the sensuality+pathos laden charanam.
This is called part writing - writing music specifically to be played by certain instruments and few people in IFM do this with as much deliberation of purpose as Raja.
P.S: I suppose it is redundant to praise SPB here.

Wonderful elaboration of Raja's Classic,fring!
I posted the visual link here even though I haven't watched it. I have the album in my audio collection.

Came across this Raaja's interview on Big FM Bangalore (done prior to his live concert here in 2012). As with most other current day RJs, the presentation is superficial, noisy & studded with factual inaccuracies, but on the bright side, the show's got some decent unplugged versions (sung by local Kannada singers with a nice keyboard backing) and some nuggets of Raaja wisdom. Here's a rough transcript of one of the segments (on Geetha).
Q - Give us a glimpse of the discussions between ShankarNag and you for Geetha, perhaps something on this song, kEladhE nimageega.
A - Shankar (a big fan of mine) wanted me to compose a ballad for a stage-play scenario that was to depict the love story of a boy & a girl from two villages that are at war. The song had to convey the whole story he said. I came up with the tune & Udayshankar wrote lyrics where he had started off with the lines 'ee oorinindha huduga, aa oorinindha hudugi' (boy from one village and a girl from the other). I objected to the lyrics saying it wasn't the best way to start the song. Uday & Shankar were both surprised and wanted to know why I thought so as the song was indeed about a tale of two lovers from two villages that were engulfed in war. I said, yes, your lines might convey the story but using these lines at the start of the song would have no aesthetic sense; it wasn't the natural approach to storytelling. I said the song should convey the separation of the lovers trapped in war, their longing to see each other, like as though the girl is singing and the guy can only listen to her voice from far away. And that's how the lyrics got changed to kEladhE nimageega dhooradhalli yaaro.
Another interesting snippet - SPB rendered this song recently in the Tribute to Ilayaraja show that happened at Bangalore. He said Raaja had written the score for his orchestra who had started rehearsing. He then suddenly asked the musicians to keep away all their instruments & simply 'sing' each of their portions, and that's how the chorus portions of this song took shape.

muththumani maala sung by two new bong singers. The girl's Saptaparna of kAlayilE mAlai vandhadhu fame. It's quite evident from this video as to why she made the cut! Fantastic expressions; pretty good pronunciation too.

Guitar meets urumi. Country music meets Tamil folk. It all stays native. Terrific stuff. Got to relive the song thanks to PrasannaR_ from twitter:
Re: Manadhil oru paattu - Song of the moment - Vol 1
Heard this after ages when I stumbled on it on youtube. The debate over whether 80s was his best era will go on among hardcore fans but what is not debatable is he was more prolific in that period than just about anybody else in the history of film music or pop music. Who else has composed so many great songs within a single decade that it's hard just to keep track of all of them, let alone his entire body of work.

Re: Manadhil oru paattu - Song of the moment - Vol 1
Heard "Naane naana" properly for perhaps the first time ever. Previously, I was not too fond of this song (or so I thought!). The reason was the pallavi didn't impress me much. It also reminded me somewhat of MSV's "Yaadum oore yaavarum kelir" and I used to switch off mentally by the 1st interlude. What a mistake!! Now I finally see that the vishayam is in the charanam and I view the entire pallavi and most part of the charanam as merely preparation and build up for one single idea - one long note where the song attains its climax IMO - "Madhuvin mayakkame unadhu madiyil inimel". "Paruva vayadhiile iravum pagalum viragam".
