Well, for Sridevi on-screenfring151 wrote:I agree. She certainly sounds more stylish.
SPB had to sing for some unknown actor
Regardless, SJ beats SPB in duets 75% of the time IMHO!

Actually, hearing it again and attempting to sing those lines myself, I am pretty sure the rest note/breath there is deliberate. It doesn't really seem all that difficult to sing in one breath, particularly not for SPB. If I can, SPB definitely can. Maybe IR wanted to keep it that way to heighten the sensuousness of the SJ lines and make that part stand in sharp relief to the SPB lines, which he actually does seem to have achieved. And I also doubt if IR would have let SPB get away with anything less than perfection if that is what he had wanted. Sadist anyone?

I don't think it is easy and SPB does sound stretched there in the sustained "Neram". I think IR probably didn't consider singing it in one breath essential for the song and so it passed. SPB had his thyroid issues and also smoked/smokes and that can play tricks with the voice on the day of the recording.

I heard it two or three times. And I agree with fring151 here. It is more like a contrast to SJ's singing. SPB is singing like a 'cool' guy and SJ is the 'hot' female. SPB's style of singing is consistent through out with the accent on pronounciation/diction with "rests/pauses". SJ is asked to sing for the 'mood'. It is a 'feature' not a 'bug' :-)fring151 wrote:Actually, hearing it again and attempting to sing those lines myself, I am pretty sure the rest note/breath there is deliberate. Two songs on the way to work. பூங்கதவே தாழ் திறவாய். Those sweeping violins in the prelude, wow! and right when they reach the climax, the crescendo, comes a thagara dappA slap. Why? Because Bharathirasa wanted to open a goddamn door. One thing I like about both Deepan and Uma R is their diction. Just perfect. After Raaja, its Deepan C who gets 10/10
Next song my car stereo picked up to play was நான் பாடும் மௌன ராகம் கேட்கவில்லையா. I was actually in a great mood this morning and I knew that this song is a mood changer. But the song is so awesome that it dint let me hit the skip button. Every single instrument literally cries. I mean this probably is the saddest song ever. But look at what SPB does. He does not cry or whatever but his emotions are controlled. So subtle. Thanks to who, Raaja! His 'oversinging' could have spoiled the song. Yeah even SPB. I have an example. Listen to மானூத்து மந்தையில (ARR) and see what SPB does in the last pallavi. Nail on blackboard.

While நான் பாடும் மௌன ராகம் கேட்கவில்லையா is the saddest song ever, ராகம் எங்கேயோ தாளம் எங்கேயோ from மெட்டி is the most depressing song ever. Like I posted elsewhere தற்கொல பண்ணிட்டு ஷாவத்தோணும்.

Nerd -
nAn pAdum mounaraagam - Self pity, glorifying one's sadness and sort of feel good in a perverse manner. "look at me, I am suffering artist". Obviously, not a depressing one in the sense that that very feeling of self pity is life sustaining and driving
Raagam engEyO on the other hand, stark depression, pointlessness of life, etc.
Well observed

Thanks Plum for reminding Raagam Engeyo. Unable to come out of this song and Sandhakavigal, looping them both. Contrasting emotions that are amazingly conveyed in those compositions. The chorus portions in Raagam Engeyo express the sorrow so beautifully (especially charanam lines "Illam Oomai Aanatho Irul Thedi Ponatho")
Also, Brahmanandham's vocals seems to pull me back into those songs over and over, his voice invokes a deeper underlying melancholy/sorrow, something I find unique in his vocals. Has he sung any more songs for IR?

I worship SPB, you know that. But sometimes this statement is difficult to argue...app_engine wrote:Well, for Sridevi on-screenfring151 wrote:I agree. She certainly sounds more stylish.

this is literally 'manathil oru paattu' - I can't recollect the song/movie name but there is this breezy 'rap song' sung by SPB from the early/mid 90s. any guesses?
