Yes...I vaguely remember that clarinet was played in the thalli thalli phrase in the audio launch.

(from my sample space @work/neighbors/cousins) being caught up in nostalgia is one thing but many have now become plain lazy to lend their ear to any of the new releases. only if they are bombarded by radio/tv will they warm up to it, cue:NEPV which had woken up many Raaja from their self-inflicted somber.Any wonder why many are reluctant to explore 90s and 00s works?

^^^ The "I will only listen to hits" syndrome. I would have never come across the two wonderful Shreya Ghoshal numbers on Julie Ganapathy if I had had that mentality. I have never seen the video of those songs on TV and I don't think they have been performed in IR's shows either. If they were, I missed it at any rate. Only raaga.com's composer index guided me to that score. They may have been hits in Chennai for all I know but I couldn't access them through the mainstream media. They are imo two of his best songs from the noughties.

Re: Manadhil oru paattu - Song of the moment - Vol 1
The first time I heard this song was a few years back on Podhigai. Casual-a TV on panna the film's title credits began rolling. And then the song came and somehow it made a very bad impression and I didn't even watch the film thereafter. Listening to it a couple of days back, I was at a loss to know what exactly I disliked. The first time I had heard it, the vocals sounded annoying coarse and bland to me (and I am not a Mano basher ) whereas...it sounds ok to me now. I am not necessarily overwhelmed but it seems to be one of his better attempts at integrating MJ-based hard funk with Tamil music. And it's better than the Karthik-picturised Muthaduthe imo. The bass is pretty kickass . I guess whenever IR moves away from his usually balanced and classical (not the WCM/CCM sense of the word) approach, we listeners find it hard to keep pace with him. At least that's what I have experienced in the last 10 years of 'getting' new scores as they come. It takes a while to grow, while 80s IR is usually instant connect.
PS: Karthik's attempts to do break dance are hilarious.

Not really, but not born and bred Madras either and also youth, so there's that . My connoisseurship of Raja started in college and my initial exposure was limited to classics which got played on the radio and TV and what my friends and family used to listen to, so sometimes I can shock myself and veteran Raja fans with my ignorance of certain not-so-often-heard-on-radio hits. Can you believe the first time I heard Uravugal thodarkathai was during the audio launch of NEPV in GM's dulcet voice....

I am listening to some kannada albums by IR in the 2000's..superb melodies, Got attached to many songs in first listen itself.Especially many songs by Shreya Ghosal n Sadhana Saragam and IR himself...Had a wrong opinion tat there was not much meldious hits given by IR from 2006 to 09, bti was wrong, it comes in one language or the other...amazed by IR consistency!

Eswar,
'Nannavanu' has three superb duets (Sriram Parthasarathy - Bela being the best) and an amazing folk song. In that folk song, 'om shivoham' Raja mixes multiple genres effortlessly, as usual
In case of 'Bagyadha Balegara' we have three lovely duets. Two Raja ones and one of Shreya and Kunal Ganjawala.

Was reading this yesterday which gives a snippet from Soundarya Lahiri: http://www.kamakoti.org/tamil/part1kurall78.htm
Could only be taken to IR who seems to have used that here in this lovely song: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZkX_2P8vBpo
Could also only smirk here: "நமக்கு அகம்பாவமே இல்லை என்கிற எண்ணம் வந்து அதில் ஒரு பூரிப்பு உண்டாகிவிட்டால், அதுவும்கூட அகம்பாவம்தான்."

Best song from Moondram pirai.
The time signature changes in SPB's scat singing in the 2nd interlude are unreal. It starts in 4/4, switches a couple of times between 3/4 and 4/4 and seems to end in 5/4 (5 beat cycle). Can rhythm experts confirm. It is not exactly my strong suit.

This song has been in the loop quite often lately. Somewhat a rare song by MSV & SJ from Manaivi Solle Manthiram.
Love the beginning, as she goes tananaanaa... tanaaa hmmm... what lovely beats...
Pleasurable interludes...

Today started with this song and unable to come out of it. Malaysia sir and Chitra chEchi are poLanthukattifying in singing and IR freaking out in every note. I guess this song should also go into Sultan of Swing thread. What a melody! The way he finishes the charanam with just that 'thagatha thaththa thaa' and a drum roll, very abrupt, yet how stylish and convincing!

You 'forced' me to listen to this song again. For some reason, haven't heard it in a long time even though I love it. Had to listen after you posted it here. What a stylish composition!fring151 wrote:Best song from Moondram pirai.

Re: Manadhil oru paattu - Song of the moment - Vol 1
Absolutely devilish, under appreciated composition - easily the best from the movie IMO, sadly overshadowed by Kanne kalaimAne and poongAtru. I don't know why he didn't have a Hindi equivalent in Sadma..maybe because it was too complex for northie ears which were just not tuned to this type of music at the time (maybe even now?). An American friend who happened to hear it playing in my car a few days back totally digs this song - says he's been looping it for the past few days, but er, previously he was looping Katy Perry's 'Roar', so it's not like that he has the most sophisticated taste in music though he apparently learnt to play the clarinet in school, but anyway, he especially claims to love SJ's singing ! IR+ SPB+ trumpet always spells epic - Vaan engum, mandram vandha, paadivaa thendrale, sorgam madhuvile, MachamuLLA machAn...

I am not able to choose as between this and Ponmeni Uruguthey, both are delightful compositions with incredible orchestration. I like Ae Zindagi/En Vazhvile more than either of these songs but of course neither is in Moondram Pirai.

Re: Manadhil oru paattu - Song of the moment - Vol 1
Both Vaan engum and Ponmeni involve brilliant vocal gymnastics, but asked to pick a favourite I will go with the former for the chords and sheer number of understated, unpretentious rhythmic variations. The maj-maj7 chord opening is immediate win for me. Another song with a similar opening, though in a different key, with a different strum pattern and melody is 'Something' by the Beatles which I also like, but of course it has nowhere near the number of musical ideas as Vaanengum. I wonder if it was an inspiration though... Also, like I said, I am generally a sucker for IR's brass based compositions.

Re: Manadhil oru paattu - Song of the moment - Vol 1
I couldn't really place Something in the melody but the chorus portions do remind me of Beatles generally. Also, 70s soul/funk like Stevie Wonder, Earth Wind & Fire, especially because of the boisterous trumpets and syncopation.
EDIT: Ok, got where you're coming from with the Something resemblance. Definitely there in the opening guitar chords. It sounded very familiar when I heard it yesterday and I wondered why because I didn't listen to much Western music when I first heard this song about 10 years back or so. Now I know.

I agree with the commenter Harrisjeyaraj in that video (not THE Harris Jeyaraj) - S Janaki actually sings the Vaanengum Thanga line in one breath and SPB doesn't do it both times. Overall also I thought she captured the mood of the song a bit better than SPB, more 'cool' kind of singing and sounded more supple in spite of being a good deal older than him!
