Re: Anything about IR found on the net - Vol 3
During a recent vambu on the KVM thread, I've personally discovered that a KVM song got used in a movie credited to MSV-TKR.
Actually, IMHO, the most popular song -to this day- from that movie happens to be this KVM number.
However, it does not seem to me that MSV or TKR had talked in public about this.
(For detailed discussion on the above, please go to the KVM thread and read this post and the subsequent posts on 'mayakkum mAlaippozhudhE nee pO pO')
The reason I'm dragging that into this IR thread is very simple.
People often make a big deal about IR not crediting some X-Y-Z musician, for some minor contribution of a few seconds, on an album / movie whose songs plus BGM score could run for an hour plus.
That is, despite him giving reasonable credits to musicians on works such as rAja pArvai (V S Narasimhan), kOyil puRA (MPM brothers), HTNI & NBW (a number of instrument players) etc, where the contributions were more than the normal amounts.
Why the same people NEVER talk about the "humility icon" MSV (or his co-composer TKR) in NOT PUBLICLY CREDITING KVM for such a major song?
BTW, the movie titles of that MGR movie show GKV as the assistant to the MDs but fail to mention this "borrowed-from-KVM" song.
I wonder how much up-and-down people will jump if such a thing happened in IR's case.
(Even for a mere programming in punnagai mannan of what IR composed, there are people claiming that ARR did everything but didn't get credit And people are looking for every opportunity to discredit IR when some keyboard or jAlrA player laments about not getting his profit-share).
For that matter, all these web-critics who ask "has IR ever praised juniors" etc NEVER ask questions such as "has MSV ever praised KVM".
Why?
Simply because it is easy to punch IR who never pretends to be a humility icon in front of stupid kumudam vikatan reporters or TV channels.
OTOH, every other fellow pretends to be humility icon and not just that...even slyly INDULGE IN PUNCHING IR, ADVISING that he should be humble
(In a recent SSJ show, ARR says that if he "carried head-weight, the next tune/melody won't emerge" )

Nilave nee vara vendum and Unna nenachen paatu padichen love theme......... from Violin Vicky...........
"I have arranged both these tracks of Maestro side by side and presenting to you today. The former is in E minor while the latter is in D or C# minor (interesting to note that the key signatures are close to that of moonlight sonata). So I normalized both of them to D minor. Its an uncomplicated arpeggio on the left hand with a simple melody in the right hand. So I hope you can use it to venture into the world of double hand playing. Do give it a try. "

Re: Anything about IR found on the net - Vol 3
Vicks has shared a youtube link on twitter where Sharreth talks about the classic 'endhan nenjil neengAdha' of kalaignan :
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2v3MJBSbP90
He had asked me to translate the anecdote. Due to time constraints, I cannot do a verbatim but let me give the gist here :
The director of kalaignan had worked with Sharreth on an ad film and on that occasion the director recalled the incident that happened in IR's studio during the recording of the album.
It was a typical day when everyone was set to record the "track" for a song for the movie in the morning. (Sharreth talks about "pattALachchitta", military discipline in IR's studio, which may probably thrill the detractors and sadist-theory-promoters )
It was at that inopportune moment the director went and asked IR for the song to be "changed" (possibly melody, it is not clearly told). Sharreth says which could have irritated and made IR angry on an average day.
But on that day, such was not the response. He said OK and responded WITHIN AN HOUR the melody and complete score and they went ahead and completed the recording, with IR himself doing the "track singing".
And the song that got composed in just an hour was "endhan nenjil neengAdha thenRal nee dhAnA"
When the director got overjoyed (that he got such a marvel in such a short notice), he was excitedly thanking IR, exclaiming "I don't know what to say".
And Raja replied in one word "naLinakAnthi" and went away, simply telling the name of the rAgam and nothing else! (Sharreth says, that's all was his reaction with hardly no emotions - "a rare kind of man". "anganaththa ALu" literally means "that kind of man" but taking into the context of reference, I added "rare")
In any case, very nice recall by Sharreth!

Re: Anything about IR found on the net - Vol 3
This self plug has a sort of relevance to this forum. On the occasion of translating WCM terms to Tamil, I mentioned about my interest in learning biotechnology and writing about it in Tamil. I am not a biotech guy, but has a keen interest in this field and do take courses and read extensively at a basic level.
Though very frustrating to write on this subject in Tamil (for that matter any Indian language), I decided to press on and take up this unique challenge. It is sad that Indians have a lot of time for stupid films and politics, but not to enhance their own languages in this world of S&T.
I ended up writing an article series for the 'Solvanam' magazine and if everything goes well, it should get published from Jan 2015. Coming to the relevance tot his forum, I used Raja and his music making process as the example for the lay person to understand the way the body creates cells, build proteins and so on. For example, Raja's score sheet is the DNA and Puru is the RNA that orchestrates the DNA instructions and so on.
Those who can read Tamil, may find this interesting as you can go from the known to the unknown. Nothing about Raja will be new to anyone in this forum. I have used convenient high level examples and not much gory detail. As with any analogy, there are limits to this too.

Bring it on. I am a microbiologist and human geneticist. So biotech is quite close to me. Would be very interested to read it

Glad to know that you are into genetics. I am not. My background is completely on physical sciences/engg/tech.
BTW, finding Tamil terms for molecular biological/genetics terms was worse than even finding Tamil words for WCM terms.
I reached out to a few to find out what they do when they teach biology in Tamil. DNA is conveniently termed as டி.என்.ஏ. Even for a human cell, I had difficulty in finding the right Tamil terms. I have still not found a term for RNA and also for the human genome. I ended up coining my own words.
This is a dangerous thing as words in Tamil for such important molecular biological/genetics terms is being done by a guy like me who is not from that field.
I wrote a frustrating paragraph in that article stating that science died somewhere between தொல்காப்பியம் and ரஜினிகாந்த்
Please do read the articles (as you understand both Raja and biotech), when they get published and feel free to correct me where I missed/misstated anything. Feel free to disagree and suggest alternate terms where you think my coinage is inappropriate.

Nice start this but both praanavaayuvatra and uyirvaLiyatra are too literal a translation and the meaning is lost. Deoxy is because ribonucleic acid (RNA) has one oxygen atom more than DNA and since DNA is one less, relative to RNA, it is deoxyribo. However, DNA has oxygen atoms in its molecular structure and so the translation doesn't get it right and either ways, oxygen at the DNA level is at the atomic level; vAyu and vaLi are more representative of air.
If there is a Tamil phrase we can guess for "The blueprint of life", that might be a good place to start with for DNA.

I had difficulty with other terms such as ribosome, human genome etc. Anyway, this is not the place for a Tamil biology discussion. My articles will have have a list of English/Tamil words at the end of each article.

Happy New Year.. One single from Shamitabh is out on Spotify. Check it out. Classic IR on drums/guitar. Must be a low budget movie.. all synth.. but sounds fine. Amitabh is the singer !!!..

Some not-so-kind references to IR in this article:
http://scroll.in/article/698525/'Mozart-from-Madras':-New-documentary-celebrates-AR-Rahman
In any case, I'm going to refrain from commenting on it further (as suggested by Drunkenmunk) until more details are available.

Funny question to PC Sriram and neththiyadi reply

Re: Anything about IR found on the net - Vol 3
media interpretation of IR's simple statement

Fantastic video by vicky..
coincidentally, my daughter was casually playing out some tunes and it happened so that she caught on to piddli si baatein and
stereophonic sannata (aasaya kaathula). She kept saying "so simple ".
So I recorded them and put it up on utube..
After seeing the video, it hit me, they are so simple, uncluttered ..
