Of course, the lack of finance meant it wasn’t a technically great film. Ilaiyaraaja was busy, and yet, we managed to arm-twist him into composing music.

Ilayaraja scored music for both 'Aval Appadithan' and 'Gramathu Athiyayam' and the zenith of his creativity manifested in all the songs that continue to haunt the music lovers even after over three decades.

'Uravuagal Thodarkathi', 'Panneer Pushpangale' and 'Vaazhkai Odam Chella' in 'Aval Appadithan' are known for their melody and philosophical touch.

In 'Gramathu Athiyayam', Kamal Hassan’s elder brother Chandrahasan played a role and acted for the song 'Vaadatha Rosapoo'. The other songs are 'Ootha Kaathu Veesaiyile', 'Aathu Metule' and 'Poove Ithu Poojai Kalaime'. A feel of rustic charm merging with modern music equipments make the tunes memorable.

நான் அடிக்கடி நினைப்பது உண்டு. இன்னும் ஒரு பத்து ஆண்டுகள் கண்ணதாசன் உயிரோடு இருந்து இளையராஜாவின் இசைக்கு முழு மூச்சாக எழுதியிருந்தால், காலத்தால் அழிக்க முடியாத இன்னொரு பெரும் இசைச்செல்வம் நமக்குக் கிடைத்திருக்கும். இளையராஜா எனும் பெரும் கலைஞனின் மெட்டு, ராகம், இசையைத் தாங்கியே பெரும்பாலானப் பாடல்கள் நிலைத்து நிற்கின்றன. அவர் இசையில் உருவாகிய கதைச் சூழலுக்கும், பாத்திரத்துக்கும் பொருந்திய பாடல்கள் என்றும் அழியாதவை. வெறும் மெட்டுக்காக வரிகள் இட்டு நிரப்பப்பட்ட அவர் இசையமைத்த பல பாடல்களை இப்போது கேட்கும்போது மீண்டும் எனக்குக் கண்ணதாசனே நினைவுக்கு வருகிறார். இனிமேலாவது நேரம் இருந்தால் நீங்களும் கேட்டுப் பாருங்கள். குறிப்பிட்ட ஒரு மெட்டில் அடங்குகிறது என்பதற்காக குறிப்பிட்ட பத்துக்கும் குறைவான சொற்கள் பல பாடல்களில் கையாளப்பட்டிருப்பது புரியும். அதில் பெரும்பாலான பாடல்கள் எனக்கு மட்டுமல்ல; எல்லோருக்குமே பிடித்தவை.

இளையராஜா என்னும் பெருங்கலைஞனின் ஓட்டத்துக்கும் கலைத் திறமைக்கும் ஈடுகொடுக்க முடியாமல் பாடலின் வரிகள் திணறுவதை எளிதாக கவனிக்கலாம். அப்பாடல்களில் சிறிதும் தன் மொழியைப் பற்றிக் கவலைப்படாமல் எழுதப்பட்ட சமஸ்ககிருதச் சொற்கள் என்னை எரிச்சல் அடைய வைக்கின்றன. எப்படியிருந்தாலும் அவை என் தமிழ்ப் பாடல்கள் அல்லவா! இனிவரும் காலங்களிலாவது திரைப்படப் பாடல் எழுதும் கவிஞர்கள் இது பற்றிச் சிந்திக்க வேண்டும்.

So, I had enough of those intoxications - some even ran for days / months before passing. Each one accompanied by a rAsA song of that time period (For example, there was this beautiful girl who always had a single red-rose and got into the bus few stops after mine and always peered into the rear of the bus to locate me & lock the eyes together for the rest of the journey - day after day - for months and she was termed 'chinna maNeekkuyiloo' ). Interestingly, none of those ever ended in any vocal conversation. 

So was this lean and sharp nosed bus-stop girl, who happened to work in the same campus as me but in a different building and who gave those 10 minutes of pattAmpoochchi moments while waiting for the bus to go to work from Palakkad fort maidhAn. Well, she got the 'vA veNNilA, unnaiththAnE vAnam thEduthE' title  Always clad in kanji-pOtta-cotton-saree & very elegant with lovely eyes, it appeared that we missed batting the eyelids while waiting for the bus. It went on for months, with nothing else - may be there was a hard-to-identify-punnagai, from both, at the end of the 10 minutes daily. 

Well, the whole thing ended when her unit got moved to another campus and the bus route changed

1.  Raja's 80s hits
2.  Raja's Carnatic raga based songs
3.  Western music (mostly Raja's 80s disco makes the rounds)

I am bored to death with this formula as it is as bad as our masala flicks.

Instead, why can't they try the following:

1. Raja's children songs (there are so many of them - Anjali, Nandalala, My Dear Kuttichatthan etc)
2. Raja's 21st century hits
3. Raja's westernized folk hits (spans all decades)
4. Raja's guitar hits (spans all decades)

These are just a few examples...
