Re: Top ludes - I mean Mt.Everest level preludes / interludes / postludes - of IR
Continuing on, let's go to guitar centric interludes. Obviously, the numbering is all screwed up.
#2 Poonthalir Aada from Paneer Pushpangal (Tamil 1981). As someone already mentioned, this is one of Raja's finest interludes. Invertible CP, chorus, violins. The song never gets the same level of attention as Kodai Kala Kaatrae or Ananda Ragam.
#13 Ilaya Nila from Payanangal Mudivathillai (Tamil 1982) - this is all about blues and even today, it is several people's ring tone. This lives on after 31 years!
#14 Then Poove Poove Vaa from Anbulla Rajinikanth (Tamil 1984). Beautiful interplay between guitar, synthesizers, flute and violins.
#15 Nalam Vazha Ennalum from Marupadiyum (Tamil 1993). Another ring tone quality interlude. It's all about violins and guitar and he will weave infinite tunes
#16 Pani Vizhum Iravu from Mouna Ragam (Tamil 1986). Slow paced but great guitar parts.
#17 En Iniya Pon Nilave from Moodu Pani (Tamil 1980). Almost a standard for those learning to play the guitar. I like the violin parts of the second interlude as it drives a huge energy into the interlude
#18 Singara Cheemaiyile from Ninaivu Chinnam (1989). I do not like this song. However, the second interlude in this song is just mind blowing.
You can hear most of the above interludes here:

That's a fascinating explanation indeed! I saw that GM interview where IR mentions this. It is almost metaphysical in nature, but beautiful nonetheless.V_S wrote:I don't think I can express this correctly, but let me try. I believe that's what IR calls it as alpha rhythm. The music he plays constitutes human relationships. He attacks at the DNA level. He even says that the music (his music) we like/listen for the first time is already there inside us. It is just that Maestro brings it out, that's the reason we feel that we already listen to it there by calling it as nostalgia. How beautiful isn't it?
CK , that was very well expressed. Also how the strings gradually take over from the flute. Not one wasted note...as always.
DM,
Poo malarnthida is one of my favourites. KJY's singing is also fab. The first interlude was botched up by the orchestra in the SS4 IR week .

Re: Top ludes - I mean Mt.Everest level preludes / interludes / postludes - of IR
Continuing on the trip of interludes ...
#19 Valaiosai from Sathya (Tamil 1989). I love the flute/synth interplay in this track.
You can hear just the interlude here... (this is an interlude that has scratches and needs a better version).
http://geniusraja.blogspot.ca/2008/09/counterpoint-with-other-instruments.html
#20 A not much heard song, but some very fine work on the interludes. Thoorigai Indri from Ajantha (Tamil/Telugu/Malayalam 2007). This is one of the interludes that simply blew me away as Western harmony meets modern synthesizers. I have never looked back at Raja's work after this and Cheeni Kum as the man's fundamentals are unchanged even when you throw anything modern at him. One of his finest in 2007 - as a WCM enthusiast, I can't ask for more...
http://geniusraja.blogspot.ca/2008/09/whats-fuss-about-harmony-part-44.html
#21 Waltz with chorus dominates this song and interludes are no exception. Vandhal Vandhal Rajakumari from Oru Oorile Oru Raajakumari (Tamil 1995) is a great example of the Waltz rhythm adopted so well for Indian film music.
#22 A 7-beat cycle maintained throughout a song and even the interludes? Kaathirunthen Thaniye from Rasa Magan (1994)
#23 A classic Indian-Western C&R with only rhythm instruments as the interlude. Ila Nenje Vaa from Vanna Vanna Pookal (1991).
You can hear the above three here:
http://geniusraja.blogspot.ca/2008/10/thaalagathi-vendum-you-need-right-beat.html
#24 Rasathi Unnai Kaanatha Nenju’ from Vaidehi Kathirunthaal (1984). The interludes are disguised WCM cleverly hidden behind a folk composition. The chord progressions are quite staggering and finally coined a phrase for this trickery of this composer - 'Cleverfolk'.
#25 Muthu Mani Maalai from Chinna Kounder (1992). Again disguised as folk, but harmonized without doubt.
http://geniusraja.blogspot.ca/2008/10/folk-revisited.html
<You are warned - we hit 25 interludes and I have covered only my 2008 blog posts!)

I agree with you about the Kel thendrale song. The interludes of this song are just sweeping - both the chorus and the violins. Is it 'Ae' or 'Kel'?
Re: Top ludes - I mean Mt.Everest level preludes / interludes / postludes - of IR
I always thought it was Ae. I can't really hear the L . The chorus is fantastic, the sweeping strings as good as his best, but unfortunately I haven't heard it on radio or TV as much as paruvame. Thank god for youtube!

Re: Top ludes - I mean Mt.Everest level preludes / interludes / postludes - of IR
What an enthrallingly delightful topic, so many songs comes to my mind, but the very first one that comes to my mind is the ever divine, undisputedly gigantic 'Poove Sempoove'
from Solla Tudikuthu Manasu....the breezy flute prelude...the skillfully crafted 1st interlude consisting tabla,flute,violins.. what a bliss... and the 2nd lude, is just out of this world..
i get goosebumps each time listening to it... jogs my memory back to the 2011 Chennai concert.... what a moment it was , when the lude was played repeatedly...i still get chills watching it..
And the ever beautiful flute finishing in the song.... flowing all the way...
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GmY1x-QkJSs
2. I am so addicted to the 2nd interlude of the Paadu Nilave song..
It's just so heart warming, the violins go, goes off as high and happily. then it slides down. slowly the mysterious gloom seeps in , again with violins....
the whole song tells a tale....where words loose their power.. It'sfor the ears and the mind to harmonize ...
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TeAfQ_aSWhY
3.The second interlude of the 'Sorgathin vasarpadi' from Unnai solli kutramillai' is another favourite of mine.
It sounds as playful but as engaging... the guitar with violins, creates a memserizing effect....
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yxDwU46OSpc
More to come .....

Somebody needs to get hold of the lyrics of the song to sort this out. I could not find it by Google search.

The song also got listed in the IR-GA thread as #22, as GA is the lyricist

As a matter of fact PS's ringtone was this song for couple of months.
Like I mentioned in that PS thread, the prelude and interludes of 'E thenRalE' are my favourites right from the time of arrival! (my +2 days) Both Johny & nenjaththaikkiLLAdhE songs bring me back a lot of nostalgia...included in the memories are kodaikkAnal & paNNaikkAdu hill terrains & their chilly breeze which carried the strong odor of a lot of wild flowers there...

Re: Top ludes - I mean Mt.Everest level preludes / interludes / postludes - of IR
As nobody has asked me to stop, the interlude journey will continue...
Let me present some seven grand violin interludes of Raja.
#26 Rangulalo from Abinandhana (Telugu - 1990) - Outstanding use of veena, synthesizer and violins.
#27 Poonkathave from Nizhalgal (Tamil 1980), CCM and WCM weaved into the interlude. We saw a lot of this come up later on with HTNI
#28 Rasaleela vela from Aditya 369(Telugu 1991). Pizzicato strings - this is one of the fine examples.
#29 Mella Mella from Vazhkai (Tamil 1984). This was also used in the BGM of Pallavi Anupallavi. Solo violins at its best (the other good example is the Punnagai Mannan song).
#30 Aaraaro from Anand (Tamil 1987). I guess Lataji's first Tamil song. Very peaceful strings.
#31 Kottum Kuzhalvizhi from Kaalapani (1997- Malayalam). You cannot get grander than this. The first collaboration with BSO, Raja weaves choir, strings, flute into a grand symphony.
#32 Manidha Manidha from Kan Sivandhaal Man Sivakkum (Tamil 1983) - Raja's early attempts to do a detailed symphonic arrangement
You can hear all of this here:
http://geniusraja.blogspot.ca/2009/02/rajas-spectrum-of-moods-with-violins.html

Next, let's take a look at some great interludes on Shehnai, a Raja specialty
#33 Kasturi Maane Kalyana Thene from Pudhumai Penn (Tamil 1983) - Very innovative use of claps, mirudhangam and shehnai
#34 Aalippazham perukkan from My dear kuttichattan (Malayalam - 1984) - Use of Shehnai for fun in a children movie song
#35 Aalapol Velapol from Ejamaan (Tamil 1993) - This is sort of song where Raja demonstrates how to be grand with the tabla and dholak. Shehnai in an unconventional setting.
#36 Vaanuyarntha Solaiyile from Idhaya Kovil (1985) - Conventional use of Shehnai with some haunting humming by SJ
#37 Kaalai Nera Poonguyil from Amman Kovil Kizhakkale (1986) . Shehnai in a CCM situation

#38 Innum Ennai Enna Seiyya Pogirai from Singaravelan (1991) - Fantastic Synth work along with horns and violins
#39 Minmini Paarvaigal from Julie Ganapathy (2003) - Call it a guitar or synth or flute lude. Ideal ring tone material.
#40 Oru NaaL Oru Kanavu from Kannukkul Nilavu (2000). Another great synth melody. This lude is another ring tone material.
#41 Manjolum Raathri from Oru Yaatra Mozhi (Malayalam - 1997). I have written about this lude. This is one of my top synth picks of Raja. This is a Raja only possible lude.

#42 Pattu Poove from Chembaruthi (1992). I like the vibrant guitar notes in this lude
#43 Raja Raja Chozhan Naan from Rettai Vaal Kuruvi (1987) This interlude needs no intro.
#44 Ennadi Meenachi from Ilamai Oonjalaadukirathu (1978). This was the early electric guitar-trumpet hit of Raja

#46 Enthu Parainjalum from Achuvinte Amma (2005). The flute work in this song is simply outstanding, especially the second interlude
#47 Poovai Virijnu from Adharvam (Malayalam 1989). Flute and veena - simply sets your mind at peace. Only Raja possible lude

@Ravi - appreciate is not the word -- I can only praise and thank you. What an immense body of research you have created. I feel like I have been a 'frog in the well' in not reading your work. Not sure, what people do in their MS/PhD thesis on music. I am pretty sure you can collect yours into a 'Applicaiton of Classical Musical Techniques in situational(songs) and background music in movies' or something like that and walk away with a Doctorate proudly. Publish it as a book 'Ravi's Anatomy (of Raja songs)' :-)
BTW, seems like there is at least a few usual techniques that is being in preludes specially - I think it is ostinato, which at times changes to a counterpoints and finally merges together. Please refer me to your blogs any on this.
(Sometimes (or many times per some critics) , it looks like even bad lyrics was tolerated to get these ludes/musical ideas out :-) )

Continuing with veena centric interludes...
#50 Ilancholai Poothatha from Unakaakave Vazhkiraen (1986) - I like the synthesizer and veena play in this track. One of Raja's top classical interludes
#51 Tham Thananam from Pudhiya Vaarpugal (1979). Nothing needs to be said about this interlude. It's just that most of us have forgotten it.
#52 Kadhal Mayakkam from Pudhumai Penn (1983). This is one of my top Raja picks as it appears in every facet - chorus, classical, modern, synthesizer, C&R - you name it.
#53 Vasantha Nilavin from Sooryan (2007 Malayalam) The only complaint is the shortness of this lude. Guitar and veena - one of the best such combo's
#54 Kai Veenaiyai from Vietnam Colony (1994). Very nice veena based interlude.
I know I have not covered the Mogha Mull interludes here - but will later.
You can hear all the above here...

Now, I will introduce the group to some combo tracks that have multiple interludes. That's the way I covered Raja's folk work.
#55 to #58 - Maaman Oru Naal (Rosapoo Ravikaikari (1979)), Oothakaathu veesaiyile (Gramathu athiyayam (1980)), Raasave Unnai Nambi(Mudhal Mariyadhai (1985)), and Aathorathile(Kaasi (2002).) - All these interludes us simple flute, guitar, shehnai - very down to earth orchestration. They do have a charm in its simplicity.
http://geniusraja.blogspot.ca/2010/01/vanilla-flavored-cleverfolk.html
Raja camouflages WCM inside his externally appearing folk tunes.
#59 and #61 - Samakozhi Koovuthamma (Ponnu Oorukku Pudhusu (1979)), Pothi Vacha Malligai Mottu (Man Vasanai (1983)), Onnavida (Virumandi (2004))
It took me a while to understand Raja's technique. Most of his folk is cleverly camouflaged.
http://geniusraja.blogspot.ca/2010/02/chocolate-flavored-cleverfolk.html
Raja makes no attempt to hide WCM in some of his folk compositions...
#62 to #64 - Intha Poovukoru Arasan (Poovarasan 1996), Kadhaipola Thonum (Veera Thaalatu (1998)), Rasathi Rasathi (Poovarasan 1996)
http://geniusraja.blogspot.ca/2010/02/chocolate-chip-flavored-cleverfolk.html

Re: Top ludes - I mean Mt.Everest level preludes / interludes / postludes - of IR
Let's next try and compare Raja's 80s and his 21st century output from an interlude perspective...
Ananda Ragam from Paneer Pushpangal was beautifully re-orchestrated as #65 En Nenjin Ragam from Udhayam or Shiva (2006) (Hindi) - Saara Eh Alam
#66 Jyotheyale from Geetha (Kannada 1980) was beautifully re-orchestrated as #67 Jaane Do Naa from Cheeni Kum (Hindi 2007). The main tune is the same but the orchestration is absolutely stunning.
#68 Kulzhaloothum Kannanukku from Mella Thiranthadhu Kadhavu (Tamil 1986) - the flute melody was re-orchestrated with synthesizers in the #69 Cheeni Kum song Baatein Hawa (Hindi 2007).
You can hear side by side comparison of these interludes here:

Let's look at 21st century Raja with some fantastic synth interludes...
#70 Oru Chiri Kandaal – Ponmudipuzhayorathu (2005 Malayalam)
#71 Shwashathin Thalam from Achuvinte Amma (2005 - Malayalam)
#72 Mandarapoo Mooli from Vinodha Yatra (2007 – Malayalam) Kalyani in the 21st century mode
#73 Mella Oornthu Oornthu from Nandhalala (2010 - Tamil)
#74 Kai Veesi Nadakura from Nandhalala (2010 - Tamil)
#75 Thendralum Maruthu from Valmiki (2009 – Tamil)
#76 Shrungara from Prem Kahani (2009 – Kannada)
You can hear all of these 21st century work of Raja here...
http://geniusraja.blogspot.ca/2010/08/techno-baroque-melody-perspective.html
#77 Enge Nee Sendralum from Kannukkulle (2009 Tamil). Solo violin meets modern synthpad.
#78 Oda Thandil from Pazhassi Raja (2009 Malayalam) Pretty modern folk rhythm played on a synthpad. Synth flute is just bewitching
#79 Kogile Kooguvaa from Prem Kahani (2009 Kannada) - 21st century adoption of several 1980s style interludes...
#80 Kooda Varuviya from Vaalmiki (2009 Tamil) - the flute interlude that can be a great ring tone
You can hear #77 to #80 here...

Re: Top ludes - I mean Mt.Everest level preludes / interludes / postludes - of IR
That amounts for half the ludes on my blog. I have not included rhythm centric, or chorus centric ludes of Raja. The list is endless.
On separate posts, I will include a sample of my interlude database. I have spent more than 3,000 man hours separating these interludes, cataloging them and also stitching them together into combo tracks. Not all ludes in this list have made it to my blog (they need to support a theme). Not all Raja interludes make it to my database. I consider this list as the best from Raja. There is no point in searching for Everest in this. Sit back and enjoy all of them...

Re: Top ludes - I mean Mt.Everest level preludes / interludes / postludes - of IR
Ravi sir, don't you think the interludes of Jaane do na and cheeni kum hai were 'dumbed down' for lack of a better word? The 2nd interlude of jaane do na is quite generic IMHO. Both these songs (vocals and interludes) lacked the intensity of the originals. I would only rate 'Gum sum gum' as a worthy new age 'remix' if you will, of Thumbi vaa. Let's hope Balki asks for originals in this new movie and not remixes as I frankly think IR doesn't enjoy doing them. OTOH the score for Cheeni kum which was an original was fantastic. That should give Balki a further clue.

Re: Top ludes - I mean Mt.Everest level preludes / interludes / postludes - of IR
Fring, I agree with your comments on Jaane Do Na - indeed, the second interlude seems a little 'bland' if I may use that word, kinda rare for a Raaja song.
But, 'Baate Hawaa' from the same Movie has two amazing interludes - the first one with violins and trumpets (synth ?) is amazing and leads to charanam with an ease characteristic of Raja, and the second interlude switches to rock mode briefly before unleashing a Jazzy trumpet, finishing with some neat key strokes, and as usual seamlessly paving the way for charanam 2. Definitely among Raja's top ludes in 20xx years. and the entire song is just a trance from the first note to the end
(if you've not heard it, my advise would be to skip the Big B version, and listen to the Shreya only version, from iTunes ! )
