Appreciating impressive TFM ludes that are not by IR :)
While there is no question that IR is the "நேற்று இல்லே நாளை இல்லே எப்பவும் நான் ராஜா" of preludes / interludes and postludes of TFM songs, we can definitely spot sweet, brilliant and enjoyable ludes from other masters of TFM as well.
This thread will be the place to pick out and appreciate some real good ones

mellisai mannar MSV excelled in melody and that at times greatly benefited his ludes as well. While I'm not knowledgeable enough to comment on the instrumental brilliance in them, often there had been an endearing melodic quality to some of his great ludes.
One that instantly comes to my mind is the prelude of 'rAjAvin pArvai rANiyin pakkam'!
That starts with a sweet, dreamy humming by PS - that definitely harmonizes with the "Saroja Devi dreaming about MGR" setting
Then comes the grand beginning with bells, drums (that mimick sounds of horses) and the terrific string accompaniment! There's also this wind instrument (accordian or organ or whatever) that adds charm to the proceedings.
Thoroughly enjoyable & melodious!
One of the best songs from the MSV-TMS-PS combo!

Just for the shehnai. Just the shehnai. Shehnai (apparently by Bharat Ratna Bismillah Khan and MSV's Satyam, after which MSV's supposed to have said "en Satyam dhaan mEl ).

DM,
Was TKR still with MSV for Karnan?
Also, is the youtube you've placed here the "digital" version? Looks nice!

The first interlude was / is one of my all-time-fav
Canada side Niagara falls in the picturization - first time watch for me, I never knew that it was KRV in that movie

Yeah. TKR was with MSV. Tune was MSV's and orch and arrangement in all likelihood was TKR's. If I'm not wrong, they were together till Aayirathil Oruvan in 1965. Youtube fossible that it's digital.app_engine wrote:DM,

Romantic mood of ragam Kanada from A.R..Rahman's bass guitar, piano strokes prelude
உன் புடவை முந்தானை சாய்ந்ததில் இந்த பூமி பூ பூத்தது
இது கம்பன் பாடாத சிந்தனை உந்தன் காதோடு யார் சொன்னது!
My favorite is the second interlude with synthesizer, bass guitar, cello & flute followed by the charanam
நீ அணைக்கின்ற வேளையில் உயிர் பூ வெடுக்கென்று மலரும்
**********************************************************************
Minimalistic Piano strokes backdrop in Charukesi rag lullaby AAHISTA AAHISTA ... SWADES..... FROM RAHMAN .

Love the little pause before the reflective guitar passage in the first/second interlude of Ninaipathellam Nadanduvithal. It's also my favourite pre-IR Tamil song. Nenjil Oru Alayam is a classic album indeed.

Re: Appreciating impressive TFM ludes that are not by IR :)
Some twitter exchange on this JeMo article on AA Raj reminded me of 'vAsamillA malaridhu' of OTR.
The album originally had music credits as "Rajendran-AA Raj", Rajendran being T Rajendar
(TR wrote all lyrics for OTR, lovely ones! He was perhaps the basic tune smith for pallavi and such and AAR did the rest of music dept. Such as building on the basic mettu with additional nuances, interludes, orch and such ; it was also possible that AAR did some mettoos himself)...
In any case, that repeat interlude (lead guitar stuff) was a rage at the time of arrival - boys "singing" it - and I can enjoy it even now (though at a very very lower level of excitement to IR's interludes obviously):
vAsamillA malaridhu - look for first and third interludes - audio only
Rajendar & Robert-Rajasekar who did the visual part didn't do justice to the interlude as they truncated it:

My most favorite KR song. A pity this is unknown even in his home state with his already minimal discography and to think even this youtube lists some random Vikesh Mehta as the composer and has it unchanged despite a few hollering comments from namma aatkaL. Tcha. Unlucky fellow KR.

A letter to JeMo validates what I posted on TR - here and in twitter

Fantastic number from the last movie of MSV-TKR combo prior to their split - Ayirathil oruvan.
adhO andhappaRavai pOla - though the prelude essentially plays only the pallavi, what a lovely one is that!
Also, though the interlude repeats, I simply love it!
One of the very best from the mellisai mannargaL (song / orch / ludes)!
MP3 link
The joyous on-screen stuff is on youtube:

Kannadasan is incredible. Heard an anecdote that MGR went to Kannadasan only lastly after every other lyricist failed to get it right. And Kannadasan did so instantly. Awesomeness.
Re: Appreciating impressive TFM ludes that are not by IR :)
It's not very often that I hear a non-IR TFM track on repeat while driving. That too voluntarily!
This reethi gowLai number - simple yet beautiful - is on repeat since last evening on my drives : kaNgaL iraNdAl
The first interlude is definitely the highlight of the song - that flute portion is so delectable! Agreed, that "sound" is inspired from rAsA's chinnakkaNNan azhaikkiRAn, but the whole song is not.
The Sashikumar - James Vasanthan combo definitely internalized IR of 1980 and made this song. The director definitely got a lot of credit from me for the brilliant embedding of "siRuponmaNi asaiyum" into that movie, from time to time. Now, I should say I love the picturization of this kaNgaL song as well:
In a way, Sashikumar was in phenomenal form in his first movie w.r.t TFM. He was among those who reminisced back what the director gumbal that were close associates of ARR had kicked out from TF in the 90's (including MR / Shankar et al). Those biggy phonies had made a mockery of TFM by making them "MTV videos"
Granted the nonsense got started by AVM much earlier (SPM & rAsA songs) and later TR was doing much of the damage (in 80's). To the extent that rAsA himself would have lost interest scoring for TFM in 90's and possibly found more satisfaction composing for Malayalam movies.
However, the crown of such clowning of TFM must be given to ARR-associates. (Add Sun-TV kind of gumbal to the mix, TN had a deadly combo that killed any interest people might have had on songs that had any relevance to the movie's script).
Not that I love Subramanyapuram movie as a whole (watched it only once, too much blood that I could stomach) but love those two song sequences (siRu ponmaNi & kaNgaL iraNdAl) that are phenomenal by any standard!
Actually, nowadays with the DVD-internet style of movie watching, it is very rare to enjoy ANY movie as a whole All that one enjoys are some great moments here and there and from that PoV, Sashikumar gets great marks for these scenes, regardless of how the movie was!
The song, as a standalone, scores great on three counts for me...
1. Obviously the first interlude - simply sweet flute!
2. The anupallavi is fantastic! Though the pallavi starts in a JamesV-church-style fashion but sans any WCM in a flat manner, the sweetness of the rAgam that comes with some rich bhAvam in the anupallavi blows one away. (The female singer otherwise sings mostly flat but excels here).
"பேச எண்ணி சில நாள் அருகில் வருவேன்
பின்பு பார்வை போதும் என நான் நினைத்தே நகர்வேன், ஏமாற்றி"" is so lovely!
That connective "ஏமாற்றி" is so IR-like and makes the whole portion so nostalgic 80's.
3. pAdal varigaL are lovely, reminding one not necessarily the on-screen stuff but (most probably) stuff that happened in one's own youth
Full marks to whoever that wrote those lines! (Thamarai?)

Nice post App ji I too like it. I have a playlist of non-IR very selective songs (especially after 92) and this song is in.
