Hard to disagree there What a song! The chorus humming in the prelude and 1st interlude. WOW! Shared it once with a friend of mine who was gobsmacked and told these are musical ideas that bands tried in the 90s. What a futuristic composition! If only there was better recording infrastructure then. I had recently uploaded a better quality upload: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CAByH9dk-D0

Second lude from thendral varum - paaru paaru pattanam paaru

The tune itself is delectable but the piano/veena/flute pieces in the second lude takes it to another level

Re: Top ludes - I mean Mt.Everest level preludes / interludes / postludes - of IR
Not sure if I've talked before (i.e. in this thread) about the interlude that comes prior to 3rd saraNam of Ayiram malargaLE malarungaL...
Too lazy to browse thru the older posts So, let me indulge in a new post.
Listened to the song (of course, on repeat) this AM and each time I hear this interlude I'm dumbfounded - "இப்படியெல்லாம் கற்பனை செய்த அந்த மூளையை என்ன சொல்ல!"
I don't think there'll be an opportunity for me to meet IR ever. If at all it happens, among any words I can manage to blabber (obviously I'll do some uLaRal), I want to "play" this interlude (வாயால தான், வேற எப்டி) and ask him what exactly inspired him to come up with this!
(Or simply - what was in his mind when he did the score for this song / what he had that day as food, beverage or otherwise)
"இதெல்லாம் அப்டியே வர்றது தான், இல்ல"ன்னு என்னால ஒத்துக்க முடியல
The song is here (if you want to jump to the interlude, it is at 4:19):
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IqGGZCqxESs
It starts with a solo flute and then a conversation between flute and strings, accompanied by the song's unique rhythm arrangement. Then the percussion stops and IR jumps into his favorite territory (of WCM style lead piano with strings backing but extra jazziness provided by bass guitar) that sounds so sweet, soothing, calming! BTW, it could have been keyboard and not a regular piano.
Unfortunately it is only very short making one yearn for more.
However, what follows is another terrific lead guitar treat - பூந்தி, லட்டு, ஜிலேபி எல்லாம் பிச்சை எடுக்கணும் - and that culminates in a top class conversation between lead guitar and santoor (or keyboard)!
By the time MV and tabla start the saraNam, one gets a வானத்தில் பறக்கும் உணர்வு!
இதுவல்லவோ இசை!
பாடல் என்றால் இப்படி அல்லவா இருக்க வேண்டும்!

Re: Top ludes - I mean Mt.Everest level preludes / interludes / postludes - of IR
Great song, nice post
I've been stuck at and earworming this song from Meendum Kokila:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ltb5HUzCm2I
Not Chinanchiru Kiliye (top favorite) or Radha Radha Nee Enge.
This one is the slightly erotic Ponnaana Meni. What. A. Song. More importantly, what an amazing second interlude!!
S Janaki sings for Unni Mary who acts in front of the camera and KJY adds the la la la humming alone for the male lead. Watch how KJY takes over from SJ for the pallavi after the first charanam. The bridge from the actor's na na na na to Kamal's la la la la on to Ponnaana Meni (sans any instrumentation) is seamless. What a lovely pallavi and what a lovely way to underline it by sticking to the story brief. But the best is yet to come. The pause after his line (when Kamal pours water on a Sridevi ready to bath in just her dhaavaNi and washing clothes) leading to keyboard and bass guitar happens followed by the most eargasmic passage of awesomeness with the second interlude. The violins are interjected by the keyboard in a playful dialog as Kamal plays with Sridevi, followed by violins humming a tune which gains weight with the cellos backing behind. The pause in the group violin is filled by another group violin with another tune. This followed by a BREATHTAKING piece of violin (from 3:07-3:13 but boy been endlessly looping these 6 secs alone since day before yesterday) playing filled by the cello (what weight it adds!) with the violins playing a tune on the upper octave and then the same tune on the lower octave and it gives a swinging/whirlpooly feel due to the repetitive tune played albeit in a super fast pace. Thrilling and breathtaking. Because what follows is the hero taking the lead from the "film tune" (in the film) and playing with his wife in the interlude till he goes back to the film's tune for the charanam. Just how Raaja elevates the in-between supposedly "filler passage" to great heights!
Now watch the song with the video to see how Kamal treats Sridevi in the whirlpoolish passage of the strings to see how the orchestration is married to the visual as elementary as an erotic husband playing with his sexy wife
Raaja you Sultan of Strings!

DM - have you heard the interludes of IR's telugu songs?
they are just out of this world stuff!
only make sure you shut your eyes while listening.
try these:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fGPM9ClJnzU (year 1991-92 - the bass line is badass and the second interlude frenzy is something he has not done anytime before or after)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FiOBP7J8afI (valai osai redux - the interludes particularly the second interlude is goosebumps)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eRjClCc3u9c ('yemma andhi mayakkamaa's richer and lusher cousin with BADASS guitar riffs and an outrageously creative version of some ragam!)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B7yqdc5hMRI - Songs 4 and 6 are outright masterpieces - 6 is Dharmavathy, and song 1 is still a great one despite sounding similar to 'priyasakhi' from Gopura Vasaliley, no.5 has some brilliant violin motifs.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RJB6Oy5Jzwo - 'chamakku' and 'kolo kolamma' are marana mass maya mayagowlas which shot Chiranjeevi to heights even he wouldn't have imagined of! 'shubhalekha' is a riot with a percussion for a horse ride song, and the interludes are therichufying bombs and again the second interlude -OMG!

Top songs sir, each of them. Coming across them for the first time. Cham Cham Chaka Cham is OUTSTANDING, also slightly reminiscent of Jigi Jigi Jigi Ja from that Vamsi film. The Dharmavathi is now my earworm from Ponnaan Meniirir123 wrote:DM - have you heard the interludes of IR's telugu songs?

Or, it could be that they got inspired by the post in this thread a few days before

Re: Top ludes - I mean Mt.Everest level preludes / interludes / postludes - of IR
Discovered this thread way too late. Lot of interesting content here.
There are a lot of BGM compilations on YouTube. But, not many interlude/prelude/postlude compilations. I now realize some of those uploads were by forum member @ravinat.
Over the years, I have been building a personal playlist of my favorite interludes. Decided to post some of them on YouTube now, so that others can listen too.
Here is Volume 1. Hope you like it.

Thanks @Usha, @crimson king, @app_engine, @IsaiRasigan, and other forum members who have viewed it.
Here is Volume 4 with a mix of traditional rhythm at the start to western rhythm towards the end.
Some of the not-very-popular ones here - Hey Pulla, Alli Thantha Bhoomi, Oh Endhan Vaazhviley.
And that completes most of my personal playlist (excluding the very popular ones). Since there is good interest, will try to compile a few more volumes based on songs I've discovered in recent years.

Here is Volume 5 from some of my recently discovered songs. This volume features interludes with prominent drums tracks/basslines from the mid-to-late 80s.
Had a lot of fun putting this one together.
Some of the not-very-popular ones here - Vai Vai (from a Telugu dubbed KH movie), Ingeyum (rare song from Sathyaa), songs from Kadhal Oivathillai.
