Interesting question. There is also flute and Nadaswaram, but I am not sure if the these instruments were popular among the masses prior to the advent of TFM. I hear that flute was not in vogue even in carnatic katcheris till some time in the early-mid 20th century. I get the feeling that even the learning and playing of Nadaswaram is restricted to certain sections of society (I might be wrong) and there are not too many people who really learn to play the flute in my experience. It is even rarer to find, say a Chitraveena player. This is quite unlike the west where many people learn to play some instrument in school, and of course they have several conservatories dedicated to teaching music etc...

Fring - Try to hear Bhanu Bhoomiyaa sang by SPB/SJ in a kannada film (can't recollect the name). The thaipongal song is a remake in Tamil. I prefer the kannada song. Fantastic ludes.

SJ is better in the Kannada version. But the 'moody' treatment in tamil with KJY is my cup of tea (I guess the tempo and even the scales might be different) . The kannada is more counterpoint'ish. Will wait to hear more from you Ravi.

Heard it now. So looks like this released in 1978!, much before the Tamil version. Like Kiru, I am also still partial to the Tamil version, but I am sure this will grow on me too. 

I couldn't find this song on youtube. Actually many IR Kannada songs are not to be found on youtube and even those that are do not have all that many views. I am not sure if this is to do with the indifference of Kannadiga magas, IR's non-popularity there or a combination of the two. This is the raaga link:

My favourite work of his from the 20xx years is Nandhala - I have listened to all the songs 100s of times, and my picks for the 'top ludes' forum would be Mella Oornthu Oornthu (both interludes) and  Oru Vaandu Koottame (the second interlude) - I believe Ravi already has these songs in the list he's compiling. Nandhala also has one of the best movie BGMs not just in the recent years, but among all of IR's works, in my opinion.

there are two interludes that are special to me. For they change the tone and color of the song they are placed in ...
1. second interlude of nee dhaane naal thoarum from paattu vaadhiyaar.
2. second interlude of manikkuyil isaikkudhadi from thangamanasukkaaran.
Both tell a tale while the song is progressing.. pure WCM magic that is so effective in 3rd person narrative for theatre.
