Fortunately, here VM is a lot more charitable to the muththam word (முன்னூறு நீ தந்து முன்னேறு) - perhaps encouraging the couple to try for Guinness Record and such stuff. However, his disdain for the "process" continues to show up in the next line (இதழ்ரசம் இலவசம்) indicating that it's cheap stuff

That is some kind of boldness for a person who primarily wrote cinema lyrics - to continue to treat a primary aspect of romance with such utter disrespect / disregard.

That way, VM is quite unique! 

#152 nAn pAdum mouna rAgam kEtkavillaiyA? (idhaykkOyil, SPB)

The only song VM penned for the famous IR-MR combo. Interestingly, VM seems to be the most preferred lyricist in the MR-ARR era. (I guess VM wrote all songs for few of such movies while MR didn't seem to have such trust with him when he entered the field or even his next couple of projects that happened before the IR-VM ladAi).

Remarkably, MR feels that IK was his worst-movie (and many MRFs agree that he was just a "man-hired-to-execute-kOvai-thambi-designs" with not much creativity possible for the director).  It seems IR recommended MR to Kovaiththambi which even resulted in a ladAi between the producer and MD

Whatever the real story was, IRFs had nothing to complain since they got a terrific album with a variety of songs!

VM's song is easily among the best from this album and got covered in the IR-SPB series duly. The melancholy is nicely captured in both the lines and music, while the visuals are so-so :

Some nice wordplay along with typical TFM-ish uyarvu naviRchi & similies (தென்றலும் நின்று போனதுண்டு / வெண்ணிலா வந்து போவதுண்டு are the hyperbole stuff while the standard குயிலை / சோலையில் / பூவும் / காம்பு kind of similes are regular VM stuff).

What is remarkable is the tone of melancholy (என் சாபம் தீரவே நீயும் இல்லையே, என் சோகம் பாடவே ராகம் இல்லையே etc) that can easily drench the listener into sOgam and depressed mood

BTW,   is definitely deserved for VM for this song!

#153 oru jeevan azhaiththadhu (IR/KSC, geethAnjali)

This excellent song got covered by V_Sji in his IR duets write-ups (DON'T MISS READING)

One of the better candidates from VM during his IR-collaborative years where rAsA had also sung. I am not sure if the 'jeevan' word was rAsA's insistence or VM's effort to please rAsA (much like repeated use of the "iLaya" word those days). In any case, this must be among the more used vadamozhi words in TN

People who had not got properly educated in Thamizh may not understand "நெஞ்சில் கன்னம் வைத்தாய்'

The கன்னம் there means the hole dug by a thief on the wall to secretly enter the house to steal. Here the girl sings about how the kaLLan had stolen her heart! The slEdai is quite sweet, if one knows sayings such as "அன்னமிட்ட வீட்டில் கன்னமிடலாமா?". It is such sweet things that make a language interesting and sure enough Thamizh has got many. Just that their usage seems to be diminishing -especially with modern youththu not paying much attention to either the language or poetic stuff in TFM

What a lovely themmAngu this one is! VM had penned excellent lines to suit the mettu that accompanies a fast-running rhythm nicely as well!

Perhaps the best thaththuvappAdal that VM wrote for IR.

I mean not for IR but under IR's music

Obviously, one of my all-time-fav VM-written songs in TFM.

What a lovely way he put the words together for capturing the soreness - that bitter disappointment that could happen to a man!

#156 oru koottukkiLiyAga (padikkAdhavan, MV)

Post-veLLai rOjA, MV was a regular PB singer for NT. The combo was big for MM and continued for padikkAdhavan.

On-screen, the song was funny because Sivaji acted as elder brother to the kid that acted as kid of K Bagyaraj in movies those days  

Otherwise, the song is pretty good - rAsA packed in enough emotional content and VM wrote decent stuff as well.

Personally, however, I don't like the "koottukkiLi" business! I would rather see parrots freely enjoying their lives in the wild than being confined to a "koodu". I've personally not seen parrot "nests" (I believe they use tree-burrows for breeding and not sure if such can be called "koodu" because such is really "pondhu"). In any case, here it is just an uvamai and since the koodu refers to human habitat, it's not all that bad for the cine lyrics...

In a way, it's a rehash of the pazhamozhi "வெந்த புண்ணில் வேல் பாய்ந்தது போல"

Sadly for Vairam, there were many other combinations with which IR was successful, including some that pre-dated VM, like IR-Balu Mahendra/IR-Sridhar. I do agree with what he said about how audience would react to VM and IR working together again - it's a damned if I do and damned if I don't situation.  But maybe that is also the difference between IR and VM.  IR just makes his music and doesn't care what the audience will say or won't say.

Take the popular IR-MR combo, of the so many extremely popular songs, there was JUST ONE SONG written by VM (nAn pAdum mouna rAgam) but all others by variety of lyricists, predominantly Vaali.

VM carefully avoided talking about IR's combos, giving the impression that BR-IR-VM was the only one that clicked in 80's. Actually BR's first 6 movies, 4 of them silver jubilee, didn't have VM

In any case, per my later appreciation, even during that time, IR-Mahendran was a more sophi combo
(Which didn't have much to do with VM fellow, especially the great ones as MM / UP / NK & Johny)

Lovely, sweet song by the terrific duet pair!

I've listened to the song 100's of times on buses and tea shops without knowing which movie the song was from. Only after coming to tfmpage did I know the movie's name. Like most songs, during this current exercise with vinyl covers and our forumer's authentic spreadsheet, I could identify the lyricist as VM

Let us look at the pAdal varigaL and appreciate any specials :

I realize today - for the first time - that it is "suka vELai" and not "subha vELai" which I thought it was!

It was possibly mind playing tricks that morning has to be 'subha vELai' and not meant for other things

Well, as it goes with TFM style (and more with VM's style of lot of kalavi focus in kAdhal), the song is about bedroom sukam rather than other things of the morning (even though rAsA's music indicates nothing of that sort, for some reason).

While there are some nice phrases by the kavingar, I couldn't understand what kind of "சாரம்" (typically referred for salt) can be attached to "தங்கம்"

The meaning is understood - "value" - but the word is kind of unusual

This is one of those songs that I've heard in buses only

Soothing PS voice presents a melodious village themmAngu that is soft and sweet. There's mild melancholy in the melody & orch and the same is also expressed via some story-telling / parable-telling pAdal varigaL by VM.

Interesting to see the word "ஓமலிப்பு" in the middle of second saraNam.

I probably heard my aunt using this word those days (i.e. the aunt with long ears like maN vAsanai Gandhimadhi, who could throw pazhamozhees at will - each of her sentences had to be deciphered )

Today I had to check the lexicon to get the meaning of it :

After all the abuse VM heaped on muththam over the years, it's quite interesting to know that he had ALSO written that it could be தித்திக்கும்

Well, he reminds us even under that context that it comes with some kind of expense ("இளமைக்குச் செலவு இருக்கட்டும்").

Nitpicking apart, the song is written well for the peppy sandham and also keeping in sync with the "Kamal image"

I've written a short post in the IR-SPB series on this song. Looking at the youtube, the movie was more of Japan promotion than telling story I think...

#161 sondhangaLE sutRangaLE (aduthAththu Albert, MV)

Easy to guess the movie's theme just by looking at the title (inter-religion-love-conflict business). And this song exactly showcases a tragic outcome of a boy and girl in love who suffered the parental rejection due to the difference in religious background.

MV mimicked CSJ in this song and the same was heard frequently on radio / buses those days. The interludes are terrific stuff by IR, giving the depressing sOgam that the movie situation demands. Unfortunately, the on-screen visuals are unimpressive / boring...



VM was obviously in decent form in that year and this song was no exception. Some interesting lines ("வாங்கி வந்த மாலை மலர் வளையம் ஆகும் வேளை" is lovely). Unforunately, since the movie was a dud, the songs didn't get the attention they deserved. They had their air time (idhayamE nALum nALum, vA vA munnooru milliyE were hits as well) but overall got shadowed by tons of other songs that rAsA was outputting those days!

I've heard this song many times on buses but never realized it was from a Vijayakanth movie

Somewhat reminiscent of IR's Malayalam songs of that time period (the very famous "yamunE ninnude nenjil" of yAthra from the same year can be called a cousin of this song). Not a strong dose of IR's typical tribal stuff but bordering on that, to suit the mileau.

I didn't find any "song only youtube", hence giving this link if someone is insistent on seeing the paridhAba visuals! Otherwise, there's this tamilwire link for a somewhat better audio quality, though nothing compared to what I used to hear on buses those days!

The use of கருகமணி (that bead in jewellery that is often used as metaphor for girl as well) in TFM is not new. I've posted the fun Bhairavi youtube in another thread that used the line "கட்டப்புள்ள குட்டப்புள்ள கருகமணி போட்ட புள்ள" that got played in every patti thotti of TN when arrived, in the masculine voice of TMS. (I believed those days that it was a S-G song but understood to be an IR number in the internet era).

VM uses that popular term in this song as a metaphor (after all why not call the girl a jewel / gem / precious stone etc). Funnily, he also adds "மச்சமுள்ள"
(Possibly some wicked thoughts? )

Most of the other lines are just fillers to fit the melody with hardly any serious stuff...மனசும் கிறங்கும் / மனசும் மயங்கும் / இதமான / பதமான லாலி kind of word stitching...

Another SJ song for a Vijayakanth movie from the same year!

Another folk genre female solo number!

But, man, what a lovely song by rAsA! Look at the way the saraNam ends somewhat abruptly (i.e. unexpectedly) and jumps back to pallavi in a lovely fashion - absolute brilliance by the mastero!! (And he uses some thrilling synth sound to handle that, quite interesting )

One more "yearning" style pAdal that gets added to 100's of such numbers in TFM. Mostly nice lines...

(I'm not a fan of "அழுகின்ற பெண்ணுக்கு ஆயுள் கம்மி" however - it sounds funny and silly )

#164 uyirE uRavE onRu nAn sollavA? (anbin mugavari, SPB-SJ)

This is a rare kind of song, in the sense I missed it in the SPB series for some reason or other

In another sense too, this is an interesting case. The original was a Telugu song and possibly Manivannan wanted to use that and IR consented. Later, that Telugu movie got dubbed into Thamizh - album came in the same year but movie possibly came later - pAdum paRavaigaL

That way, the melody had two Thamizh versions in the same year.

Looking at the pAdal varigaL (and the TOTAL DISCONNECT with the visuals), I suspect whether this one too initially got recorded as a "dubbed" one for pAdum paRavaigaL and later got replaced with the other song. Manivannan possibly "purchased" it from the dubbing gumbal and used in his movie. Very much possible!

Regardless, I can recall listening to this on a number of occasions during travel - without knowing any background / origin etc.

Coming to pAdal varigaL, they seem to suggest the love of some girl in trouble (கண்ணகி மகளுக்குக் காவலுண்டா, ஏழைப்பெண்கள் வாழ்வே தொல்லை, இன்னும் சிந்தக்கண்ணீர் இல்லை, காப்பாற்ற ஆளில்லையா, ஊமைப்பிள்ளை, வேஷம் என்ன etc). OTOH, on-screen is a duet for Mohan-Sasikala much similar to isai mEdaiyil or pAda vandhadhO gAnam
