Actually, the contrast is just too much with that newbie T K S Kalaivanan

Sounds like she was taking "playback singing class" to her co-singer!

The way in which she adds bhAvam, effortlessly throws in "sangathis" - WOW!

This youtube is quite horrible, but fun to watch (there are two couples dancing around, one being Rajini-Madhavi, I could identify the other girl as vAn pOlE vaNNam koNdu Geetha but difficult to identify the boy...the director C V Rajendran must be one terrible guy to butcher a terrific song like this  ) 

I recommend listening to this song's "audio-only" version (if one can get hold of it in good quality - the youtube by inreco is terrible)

IR freaks out in the interludes as well as the bass guitar accompaniment thru-out! 
(All the songs in the album are fantastic in orch, "futuristic" for the time, with a lot of new sounds etc)

Same magic was repeated in Kannada (SPB_SJ) and Malayalam (Jayachandran_SJ).

This song is not going out of my mind for last few days. One of the initial offerings from the magical trio - IR_SPB_SJ. 

Janaki amma is absolutely awesome in this song. Violin of Raja sir is simply killing in interludes .. constant BGM through out the song is awesome ..

Balu sir added his own flavor once he entered the song in charanam ..  

One line that has max haunting affect is "Inda sugam solla mozhi edu" ...

ராசாவின் பாடல்களுக்குத் தன் குரலால் பங்களித்தவர்களில் யாருக்கு முதலிடம் என்பது தேர்தல்.

பாலு, ஜானகி, யேசுதாஸ், வாசுதேவன் - இப்படி நான்கு தெரிவுகள். 

நான் அங்கே சொன்னது போலவே, வலையில் விசிறிகள் நிறையக்கொண்டிருக்கும் பாலு வெற்றிமுகம். கூடுதல் வாக்குகளோடு அவர் வெற்றி பெறவும் செய்வார் என்பது உறுதி.

"யாரென்று நீங்கள் கருதுகிறீர்கள்" என்பது தான் கேள்வி, ஆகவே மக்களின் கருத்து தான் அங்கே வெற்றி பெறுமே ஒழிய உண்மை அல்ல என்பது தெளிவு. அதை அங்கேயே நான் சொல்லி இருக்கிறேன்.

ட்விட்டர்களும் அங்கே "கருத்துக்கணிப்பு" தான் செய்கிறார்களே ஒழிய "உண்மை என்ன" என்று ஆராயவில்லை. அப்படியாக, என்ன கேட்கப்பட்டதோ அதற்குத்தானே விடை என்று எளிதாக விட்டு விடலாம்.

என்றாலும் மனது கேட்க மாட்டேன் என்கிறது.

திரையிசைக்கும் எனக்குமான தொடர்பில் ராசா, ஜானகி, பாலு என்ற மூன்று பேருக்கும் ஆகச்சிறந்த பங்கு இருப்பதால், எனக்கு நெருங்கிய ஒரு பொருள் /  தேர்தல் இது. 

மற்றவை எல்லாம் போல எளிதாகக்கடக்க இயலவில்லை. 

தோல்வியால் துவண்ட நிலையில் இங்கே கொஞ்சம் அங்கலாய்க்க விரும்புகிறேன்.

அதாவது, ராசாவின் இசை வெற்றி வரலாற்றில் வேறு எந்தப்பாடகரையும் விட முதலிடமான பங்கு ஏன் ஜானகிக்குத்தான் என்று இங்கே புலம்பித்தள்ள முடிவு செய்திருக்கிறேன்.

ஒரேயடியாக அல்ல - கொஞ்சம் கொஞ்சமாக.

ஆல்கஹாலை உள்ளே மெல்ல மெல்ல இறக்கி வருத்தத்தை மறப்பது போல - ஒவ்வொன்றாகப் பதிந்து ஆற்ற முடிவு!

முதலில் சில தெளிவு படுத்தல்கள் :

1. இது பொதுவில் பாலு X ஜானகி பற்றிய உரையாடல் அல்ல. இருவரில் யார் சிறந்த பாடகர் என்ற கேள்வியே எழக்கூடாது. பால், வயது, காலம், வாய்ப்பு என்று பல வேற்றுமைகள் - அப்படிப்பட்ட முட்டாள்தனமான உரையாடலில் ஒரு விருப்பமும் எனக்கில்லை.

3. ராசாவின் இசைச்சிறப்பு பாடகர்களால் ஆனதோ / வந்ததோ அல்ல. இதைக் கூரை மீது நின்று ஆயிரம் முறை உரக்கக் கூவியாகி விட்டது. அதில் ஜானகியம் உட்படுவார். பாடல்வரிகளோ / பாடகர் குரல்களோ இல்லாமல் போனாலும் அவரது இசையில் வாழ்நாள் முழுதும் கேட்க / இன்புற எவ்வளவோ இருக்கிறது. மறுப்பவர்கள் முதலில் HTNI, NBW கேட்கவும். அவ்வளவு நேரம் இல்லாத அவரசக்குடுக்கை என்றால், குறைந்தது இளமை இதோ இதோ பாடலின் "குரல் நீக்கிய" வடிவம் கேட்டு விட்டுப் பின்னர் பேச வரவும். 

4. 70-களில் / 80-களில் பொதுவாகத் திரையிசையில் வாய்ப்பாட்டளவில் (தமிழ் / தெலுங்கு / கன்னடம்) பாலுவின் குரல் தான் முதல் என்று யாராவது அறிவித்தால் கூட்டத்தில் நானும் கைதட்டக்கூடும்.  மட்டுமல்ல, இக்காலத்தில் ராசா தவிர்த்த மற்ற எல்லா (எம் எஸ் வி உள்ளிட்ட) இசையமைப்பாளர்களின் பாடகர்களில் பாலுவுக்கு முதலிடம் கொடுக்க யாராவது விரும்பினால் என்னோடு கூட்டணி அமைக்கலாம்.  ஒரு குழப்பமும் இல்லை.

5. அல்லது, கமல் ரஜினி போன்ற பெரிய விண்மீன்களுக்குக் குரல் கொடுத்தோரில் முதலிடம் பாலுவுக்கே என்றால் அங்கேயும் என்னைக்கூப்பிடுங்கள். வருகிறேன்

ஒரு ராசாவோடு இன்னொரு ராசா சேர்ந்து ராசாக்களாகத் தமிழ் நாட்டின் காற்றலைகளை ஆளத்தொடங்கிய காலத்தின் முதல் நான்கு படங்கள் - 16 வயதினிலே, கிழக்கே போகும் ரயில், சிகப்பு ரோசாக்கள், புதிய வார்ப்புகள்.

இப்படி நான்கு வெள்ளி விழாக்களிலும் ஜானகிக்குப் போதிய அளவு பங்குண்டு. (செந்தூரப்பூவே / பழைய நெனப்புடா பேராண்டி/ பூவரசம்பூ / கோவில் மணி ஓசை / மலர்களே நாதஸ்வரங்கள் / நினைவோ ஒரு பறவை / இந்த மின்மினிக்குக் கண்ணில் ஒரு மின்னல் / வான் மேகங்களே). 

இந்த நான்கிலும் பாலு இல்லை என்பதை (இவற்றில் வைரமுத்து இல்லை என்பதை அறியாத உணராத தமிழ்நாட்டைப் போன்றே) எண்ணாத ராசா விசிறிகள் இருக்கிறார்கள் என்பது எரிச்சல் ஊட்டுகிறது. 

இவையெல்லாம் ராசாவின் தொடக்க கால வெற்றிகளும், குறிப்பிடத்தக்க வளர்ச்சிகளும்.

அவற்றுக்கு முழுமையாக - மற்ற புகழ்பெற்ற பாடகர்களைப் போல் சிலுப்பாமல் - ஒத்துழைத்தார் என்பது ஜானகிக்கு மட்டுமே பொருந்தும். 

பாலுவெல்லாம் இதில் பல்லாயிரம் மைல்கள் பின்னால் தான் என்பதை நினைவில் கொள்க.

ஒரு எரிச்சலில் படபடவென்று மூன்று பதிவுகள் செய்து அவற்றின் இணைப்புகளை ட்வீட்டி விட்டு, குறிப்பாக "அன்னக்கிளிக்காக அறச்சீற்றம்" என்றெல்லாம் ட்விட்டரில் இட்டு விட்டு அடுத்த நாள் காலையில் பார்த்தால் பஞ்சு அவர்களின் இறப்புச்செய்தி

Sarasalu chalu is a big hit in Telugu.  She sang Hindi version with Suresh Wadkar. I love Telugu version a lot especially for her humming ...!

I'll probably pick up the thread later and write a few more posts on why I consider SJ as the top-voice-contributor in IR's success, giving some facts to support. (So far I've posted one, as SJ being the first voice to take IR to TN homes, in annakkiLi and all the major hits of IR during 70's. SPB was miles behind in that aspect).

Another factor where SJ scores over SPB is the fact that she was the front-runner in all the 4 southern languages for IR in the 80s.  However, SPB lost out in Malayalam.  I do not think he has ever sung any song in Malayalam for IR.  (with the exception of Kakkala kannama, which had tamil lyrics for SPB).

I have one more doubt.  In the song "Aruna Kirana" from Guru, there is a male humming (Hae.. Hae..) in the interlude.  It sounds like SPB's voice.  Can anyone confirm...?

Yes, this is among the points that I plan(ned) to highlight.  Actually, right in 1978 IR-SJ combo opened their account in MFM with oru nAL ullAsa thirunAL (MFM version of oru nAL unnOdu oru nAL in the movie ARu maNikkoor).

I remember listening to that song in AIR during my school days many times (vividh bhArathi? some "other language" program). 

Obviously, that was not the only case of IR-SJ combo's success in MFM, as most of us are aware of.

There's no need to even mention 'thumbi vA', that enjoys a cult-classic status...and there were many others.

On one of the recent road trips in TN, I grabbed a bunch of mp3 disks from a gas-station-Adayar-Anandha-Bhavan-roadside place and one of them is "SJ Hits" and has some 70+ hit solos from 70s-90s.

No need to say >90% the songs are by IR.

The prelude of one of the songs on this disk suddenly jolted me while playing in the van this AM. 

As the song also has AWESOME interludes, I had to enable repeat mode

People sometimes make condescending comments (even I could have commented that way in the past) that IR shouldn't have been doing film music / should do something else etc. One may recall the recent comment by kavikkO - of selling vinmeeNgaL in meen market.

Well, I would like denounce all such opinions at this point of time  That is, I want to WHOLEHEARTEDLY EMBRACE the idea that the IR phenomenon happened in film industry and not elsewhere (as in Indian drama theater / pure music album industry / devotional field / classical field etc.) Though one wishes he worked with a lot more talented directors / artists in his career - who truly complemented his genius, this could be the best thing that had happened in favor of MUSIC LOVERS! 

I repeat - he couldn't have given such variety / phenomenal changes of moods / genres etc, that too within a track that happens for just a of few minutes, possibly in any other industry! Though one would like to believe that those are "free-forms" (i.e. without story / milieu / picturization kind of limitations / restrictions), IMHO those are actually more restricting

Though I've possibly heard this song once or twice before, didn't remember the name of the movie and thus had to search on the net to find (and was surprised that it was from a hit Rajinikanth - SPM -AVM kind of movie  Something that I watched in recent years on the net and not when it came out and still didn't pay needed attention to this song). 

While the prelude starts on a reasonably "serious" mode (with some cello / double bass kind of arrangements), one won't think it's going to transform into a "war-cry" kind, until it does suddenly! With awesome drum work and a few seconds of brass section, what a tremendous goose-bumpy transformation! Interestingly, it suddenly comes back to the cinematic theme - of a mother's wailing, in the crying voice of SJ.

And the song continues in such mode - full of surprising turns / twists, moving from mother's loving emotions to anger to serious tone to war cry! The interludes are gold standard, with seamless transformation between genres and emotions that IR is famous for and taken for granted by his fans now. Any new listener, especially if he has not been exposed to IR's music - say, a music aficionado from west, will be perplexed as to what is happening in the song  .

I simply love the shehnAi in the second interlude and the flute portion that follows it - one cannot capture the theme / emotions of the milieu better than that! 

Though SJ is not the best fit for the "war-cry" portions (and also some of the words / lines look somewhat silly  ), she aces the rest of the portions in the song. Actually, it is quite impossible for a single female singer to do justice to all the emotions in this song, especially the சூளுரை style portions - which may perfectly suit someone like Sunithi Chauhan but the other emotions like those of the mother / wailing may be found wanting

It's a well-known fact that for 'mukkal-munagal' songs, SJ was undisputed queen.

Whether one likes or not, it used to be a practice - i.e. until 90's - in TFM to present வரைவின் மகளிர் / பொது மகளிர் / பரத்தையர் (women without boundaries) very different from "தனி மகளிர்" (woman exclusive to only her lover / husband). The "mukkal-munagal" songs mentioned above were typically for வரைவின் மகளிர் characters - represented by the likes of silukku Smitha on screen. Though there had been famous songs prior to IR-SJ combo for such characters, done by the likes of LRE , those were primarily "dance" songs and could hardly be called mukkal-munagal. Actually, if one scans thru the songs in the pre-IR-SPB thread in the other section of our forum, there had been some hero-heroine (தனி மகளிர்) songs that had mukkal-munagal in pre-IR era and such were typically shunned by the public.

So, before IR, while there had been "dance songs" for வரைவின் மகளிர், there had not been "mukkal-munagal" songs that highlighted pAluRavu more explicitly. IR-SJ highlighted it way beyond anything ever done in TFM history and one can even argue that this combo created a new genre  (ponmEni uruguthEy, nEththu rAththiri yammA, kaNNa thoRakkaNum sAmee, vA mAmA vasamAththAn etc.). As time progressed, there had been no need for exclusive வரைவின் மகளிர் characters - as directors have started showing heroines with such shades and thus mukkal-munagal no longer got recognized as songs for பொது மகளிர். This is the status to this day.

However, in 80's, this created some complexity when a heroine who is not yet married to the hero has to show such pAluRavu feelings, how to express it in a song She had to be shown as "normal" as possible, yet the situation / occasion calls for some pAluRavukkuRumbu.

Well, it was not an issue for either IR or SJ - as they could execute such shade with elegance and class! As exhibited by the 'EnaiyA ABC ellAmE nee vAsi' song of aduththa vArisu. (This gets played quite often in my vaNdi in recent times)!

One of my earlier teammates - a Telugu lady - said she never liked Sridevi because even in most romantic scenes she acted childish  We have that Sridevi in this song in an exactly similar situation (of asking hero to teach her matRa lessons instead of teaching ABC). At the same time, she is the heroine and not to show too much mukkal munagals like  வரைவின் மகளிர். Very specific requirement, one of a kind! An often-childish heroine, expressing to her lover, pAluRavu feelings!

For IR, composing for such situation is no big deal - but to execute it accurately calls for none other than SJ. And, WOW, deliver she did, with superb class! Not only fitting to the situation / person / feelings etc but also teaching everyone else how to sing a playback song!

வேண்டிய இடத்தில் குழைவு, அங்கங்கே குறும்பு, பாடுவதில் உள்ள நுணுக்கங்கள், அளவான பாலுறவு உணர்வு என்று எல்லாவிதத்திலும் படு நேர்த்தியாக வள்ளலாய் ஜானகி வழங்கியிருக்கும் பாட்டை இங்கே பார்க்கலாம். (ஒலித்தரம் சுமார் ஆகையால் தனித்து இசைத்தட்டில் இன்னொருமுறை கேட்பது நலம்).

Some of the SJ highlights:
- The abruptness with which he cuts ABC / nee vAsi makes the pallavi quite sharp!
- 'pOdhum indhappAdam' repeats are done with a requesting kuzhaivu tone that makes it endearing (and makes one close to the character played)
- The kulukkal (vibrato?) when repeating the words kALai & vELai in first saraNam adds variety
- Similar words in the second saraNam are NOT done with kulukkal but with a stylish extra "throw" instead, another SJ speciality
- All these done with not a single unnecessary konashtai - every note is of superior standard!

One element that competes with SJ in this song is bass guitar! For a few seconds, IR removes it in the second interlude to make it sound "thin" and then brings it back powerfully to create an impact - WOW! And thru out the saraNam, it competes with SJ for top spot

பல்லவியில் வரும் 'அன்பாலே' என்ற சொல்லை எத்தனை விதம் விதமாகப் பாடுகிறார் ஜானகி!

படம் பார்க்கவில்லை என்றாலும், என் புரிதல் அந்த ஒரு சொல் தான் முழுக்கதையின் தலையாய ஒன்று:
அதாவது, அடாவடி ஆணை "அன்பாலே" பெண் மடக்கி அடக்குதல்!.

ராசா அதற்காகவே விதம் விதமாக சங்கதிகள் கொடுக்க அதை வியக்கும் வண்ணம் பாடிக்கொடுக்கும் ஜானகிக்கு வேறு ஈடு இணை யார் இருக்கிறார்கள்?

பாடலின் அருமையான மெட்டு, சிறப்பான இடையிசைகள், ஏழடி சுழற்சி நடை மற்றும் ஒப்பிடமுடியாத தாளக்கருவி இசைகள் - இப்படி ஏகப்பட்ட உச்சங்கள் இருந்தாலும் இன்று ஏழெட்டு முறை கேட்ட போது 'அன்பாலே' என்ற ஒரு சொல்லின் மீதான ஈர்ப்பு எல்லாவற்றையும் விஞ்சியது!

From time to time, GA tries to irritate IR (or at the minimum IRFs, as IR may not even get to know what his thambi blabbers about).

Once during the sun-singer show (where children used to compete and GA was one of the judges), he unnecessarily invoked the name of ARR when the song "ooru sanam" got featured. He gave that instrument player so much of importance and talked about him for the key board sound that comes in the end of each interlude.

One can listen to that sound at either of these links (IR does not often use the same sound in both interludes, this is one of those exceptions):

GA talked about this small little portion - where ARR was just the instrument player - as if it were a big deal (almost crediting him to composing that portion)! Needless to say I got irritated about the ARR reference for a song composed by MSV-IR.

Recently I came across this video (which was possibly recorded a few years back when both IR & ARR got padmabhushan at the same time) and here too he talked about the instrument player ARR for that ooru sanam song, on a stage with SPB:

Hence that Sun singer thing was not the first time and one does not know how many times GA had been talking about those couple of seconds of instrument playing!

Even though his intention was only to flatter ARR (for whatever reason / mileage he wanted to get), from an IRF's PoV, it was equal to slighting IR (as people like me are not very thrilled to hear ARR pugazh pAdal in reference to ANY IR song - let it be punnagai mannan or ooru sanam or ANY song).

Now, one of the reasons for such irritation in me is that to some naive viewers / listeners of such programs, it could appear that ARR had some "inputs" to IR. Also, some unscrupulous "maniacs" could twist such things and try to get credit to their icon when there was nothing due

Well, GA should have paid attention to / listened to the "pottEnE poo vilangu" song! Or, at least tried to understand the creative process of IR's mind a little bit, wearing the shoes of an ordinary fan like me.

Let me try to "mind-read" IR

To me it appears that as soon as the melody / situation / singer got decided for ooru sanam, IR's mind somehow got triggered to recall this classic called 'pOttEnE poo vilangu' and he immediately decided to orchestrate on the "same style"!

Well, ooru sanam is a simpler melody and 4/4 was sufficient. In fact, he didn't even change the rhythm arrangement between pallavi / interludes / saraNam at all for this number (unlike the 7/8 structure for poovilangu where he also switches the rhythm arrangements thru out the song in exotic fashion.)

However, in his mind, he did decide to give "similar treatment" and we can see the rhythm arrangement (with that south american kind of percussion instrument used thru out) quite similar to that of the pallavi of poo vilangu! Also, the key board sounds - right from the prelude of poo vilangu - got "re-deployed" in ooru sanam.

That way, the famous keyboard sound of ooru sanam (heard in those youtubes above) is a minor variation of the same sound he used in poovilangu song's first interlude ending (as a connector to saraNam)!!!

That is, per my "IR-mind-reading", when an SJ solo came up in this MSV joint venture, for ooru sanam, IR probably did the whole orchestration in a few minutes (once he had 'pOttEnE poo vilangu' reference in mind) and the instrument players had to simply execute (one of them being ARR, for a few seconds).

If one seriously compares both songs, that older song is much more complex (both melody and orch) and had a lot more brilliance and IR-isms that got packed, than the relatively "simpler" ooru sanam, IMHO

Repeat song during this morning commute - a short one but terrific singing by SJ nevertheless!

I've seen this movie on DVD a few years back (for the first time) and of course the "moi virundhu" scene is perhaps one of the best portions in that movie. (Well, that scene can fight for a place even among "all-time-great-scenes" in TF history) and the way in which the BGM transforms into a terrific nAyanam + thavil portion, with some counter by keyboard sounds, is "can't describe with words" thingy.

SJ follows that portion with such a lovely rendition - emotion packed but not too dramatic which she had achieved in many songs likewise!

And when she extends the last syllable for "thEru - தேரு" at the end of anupallavi, it feels SO GOOD! One can call it "epitome of sweetness"!

IR could have done a whole song in SJ's voice at least for audio's sake...of course, the IR (full) version is a classic too but this is one case where I wouldn't have complained to have a full-length SJ version as well
