Though this forum is primarily frequented by "musicals", we are not that ignornat when it comes to pAdal varigaL or poem / litt.

Let us collect songs with appreciable lyrical portions and enjoy in this thread...

(BTW, why not VM? That is an additional requirement, to bust a myth...please look at Nerd's post in the "busting myths" thread)

PS: Pulamaipithan while talking of this in Manadhodu Mano made a mention of how when IR told him this song would be having a Raghupathi Raghava Rajaram base (dhobaar ya! ), he decided to desist from physical mentions and if one notes closely, ellAmE nature, music vechu dhAn associate senjuruppAr (isai mazhai pozhigiradhu, engaLin jeevan nanaigiradhu) and staying on the border of physical and platonic in the lyrics and elevating the love to deiveegam, while showing the hero and heroine actually making love, the song gains more beauty lyrically and stands out

OCD - can't keep away from posting

Another reason is this one song that is on repeat on car from last night -interesting case of me paying more attention to pAdal varigaL than other standard rAsA features on a song 
(Obviously, best ingradients by IR is a given, KJY / SJ too in their prime)

Vaali in his sweet elements for the first Sridhar movie scored by IR - இளமை ஊஞ்சலாடுகிறது (the movie title itself is both poetic & kiLu kiLuppu)

The beginning pallavi itself sets one in an intoxicated and romantic mood:

கிண்ணத்தில் தேன் வடித்துக் கைகளில் ஏந்துகிறேன்
எண்ணத்தில் போதை வர எங்கெங்கோ நீந்துகிறேன்

Two things instantly strike here - தேன் - comes as a uvamai for wine, but one has to also notice the mild kuRumbu by the kavingar in doing an "ultA" of Thamizh where honey's flower source is called "மது", another term for liquor

Then comes "நீந்துகிறேன்", which is different from a typical "மிதக்கிறேன்" usage. The difference is mainly "control". Here, the person is still in control, ruling over the liquor, thus ensuring his conscious enjoyment and not losing it to bOdhai.

When the lady sings pallavi later, it's equally interesting, throwing in uvamaigaL at will:

கன்னத்தில் தேன் குடித்தால் கற்பனை கோடி வரும்
உள்ளத்தில் பூங்கவிதை வெள்ளம் போல் ஓடி வரும்

In West, both parties call their partners "honey" (the list of works that a wife pushes hubby to do are called "honey do list" ) and in this song Vaali puts to a variety of uses for honey. In the above pallavi by female, it refers to kiss   For Vaali, kiss is as sweet as honey (and not an "expense" as in the case of VM).

Poem is compared to flower (natural, beautiful, soft, fragrant) and the flow is compared to flood.

All three saraNams are terrific as well. 

The first one is total female voice, which is sweet, with uvamai mayam:

நானும் ஓர் திராட்சை ரசம், நாயகன் உந்தன் வசம்
தென்றல் போல் மன்றம் வரும் தேவி நான் பூவின் இனம்
கொஞ்சமோ கொஞ்சும் சுகம்? கொண்டு போ அந்தப்புரம்!

What an inviting proposition there!

The third one has both female / male voices, enjoyable metaphors again:

யாழிசை தன்னில் வரும் ஏழிசை எந்தன் மொழி
விண்ணிலே வட்ட மிடும் வெண்ணிலா உந்தன் விழி
பள்ளியில் காலை வரை பேசிடும் காதல் கதை

The most interesting part to me, however, is the terrific second saraNam where the male immerses himself in the "1001 Arabian nights" kind of circumlocution (the story telling there is something like "story inside a story inside a story inside a story" kind, here they bring that feel to suit the song's mileau):

கட்டில் மேல் மெத்தை உண்டு
மெத்தை மேல் வித்தை உண்டு

WOW! (It is something like "step problem" in school math )

Personally, I will do in one step, like, "ஆணிப்பொன் கட்டில் மேல் உள்ள மெத்தை மேல் வித்தை செய்யும் தத்தைக்கு முத்தங்கள் நித்தம் உண்டு" but the teacher won't give marks, unless I write all steps

Vaali is doing a math teacher business here, in an enjoyable manner - while employing this sutRi vaLaikkal technology of Arabian stories.

Apart from the sweet lines and uvamais, the most enjoyable part of the song is words sitting beautifully on the melody! No unnecessary stretching, doubling and such difficulties.

Also, not a single irritable word (பூகம்பம், வெட்டு, குத்து, செலவு kinds) - smooth, soft operation thru out! And completely in sync with the mood / setting / melody / music!

Lyrical excellence means only excellence in meaningA? Do we consider lyrical flourish (i.e.) Osai nayam (i.e.) how well the words sit on the tune as well?

A lot of VM songs fail on the Osai nayam aspect - words project themselves over the tune - which, if you think, is a failure from a lyricist who has no business changing the tune. In fact, this might the contention point that made VM fight with IR. IR places a lot of integrity on this aspect - compromise on "poetry" but stick to finding the perfect words that sit on the tune. IMO, lyrics which dominate the tune will spoil the beauty and will not be appreciated for long.


Nowhere is this better illustrated than in the comparison of dubbed songs from Telugu - the ones written by VM in tamil versions. I don't buy  excuse of dubbing padathukku avLO dhAN mudiyin. Because
1) If the songs are lip-sync, it should be possible to use mostly the same words as in Telugu because lip-sync is sarcosanct there. If the lyricist goes beyond lip-sync in the dubbed version, then the excuse of "dubbing saar ivlo dhana mudiyin" doesn't wash because you have sacrificed lip-sync already. If he does stick to lip-sync, then it is likely that the original Osai nayam of the Telugu song is maintained
2) If the songs aren't lip-sync, then it is just like any other fresh song in Tamil because there are no dubbing constraints any more.

Considering these, VM is a gross failure as I have illustrated many times before.

I should probably spend some time listening to his original tamil songs to identify and write out his failures on Osai nayam front even in those. Many times it has occurred to me while listening - my failure is in not jotting them out but stay assured, this is a casual project now in my brain, and every time I listen to a VM Song, I will note down these failures and add them to app's VM thread.

Let's talk about a lyricist who is considered one of the top practitioners when it comes to the art of lyrical flourish AND poetry. Yes, we had a lyricist in the 80s who was a poet at heart and had a million brilliant ideas to express, and a billion beautiful words and phrases to express them in, all the while catering primarily to the needs of a tune set in stone by the composer. Compare that with nitwits who couldn't combine all these aspects, and cried off whining about the composer not adjusting his tune to whatever he, the lyricist, could come up with given his limitations.

The first instalment is going to be brief: It contemplates the amazing randomness of universe, the mystifying ways in which destiny twines lives together:
You've all heard that one about daane daane pE likha hai ditty; much abused, to the point of being a tired cliche. How do you turn that prosaic mundane materialistic philosophy invented to combat existential angst into timeless poetry, with beautiful words and phrasing, and a brilliant ode to the situation unfolding on screen, in line with the characters singing it(not the profound thoughts of the poet himself): Watch our man in action:
Try to circumscribe the inadequacy of my translation and see the words in action: This is how a mundane thought gets translated into poetry while also adorning a tune to the T, even while being phrases of musical, sonorous delight

#10 (including Plum's incomplete post which he'll finish in the next few days). Though the initial accusation was TFM lyrics were poor, we can add other languages too. My pick today is PoopOlE Un Punnagaiyil, Kavarimaan. Panchu Arunachalam lyrics. The second charanam is more situational to the nuclear family. However, there are a few gems in the first charanam and the overall song sits well in the tune, one thing I admire in Panchu. The situational lines that do justice to the 3 characters sits well and does not harm the tune. The lines in the first charanam:

பூங்காற்றிலே சிறு பூங்கொடி போல்
நீ நடப்பது நாட்டியமே.
மூங்கிலிலே வரும் சங்கீதம் போல்
நீ சிரிப்பது காவியமே.

Can you elaborate what specifically you mean by that with a few examples? Now, you would probably recognise, knowing my views about his many nonsensical and contrived lyrics, that the question is not in defence of VM. In fact I can barely contain my excitement about this observation of yours and ardently wish I can be convinced of it. Gives me one more reason to consider VM an inferior and overrated lyricist.

And this song is not the usual TFM louu or mass song. Lady, on her birthday no less, gets a divorce notice from the husband and seeks solace from her friend. Friend is the one singing it. பரிவு / இரக்கம் / கருணை / தேற்றல் / நம்பிக்கையூட்டல் and the core வாழ்த்து all in one song. In a few lines. Is there a single Rahman song which does this many things?

Nerd This is not just a song, it is much more than that. If anyone want to pay tribute to Vaali sir, this song should be there. In few lines, he demonstrated everything as you explained. If someone forgets this song and call 90% of his songs are crap, it is big sin for which they have to repent. Remember this song is more than a decade after IR-VM split.

Every song in this film is such a lyrical flourish by Vaali sir. I would like to add another one from the same film where he tells in few simple and effective lines what life is all about. No gimmicks stuff! If tears does not come after hearing the song and lyrics, I don't know what to say. Every line is a gem.

Another one for today. The song which shook every corner of my nerve and cells. We already appreciated Maestro and Shreya for this outstanding composition and rendering, but Vaali sir remained unfocussed undeservingly. He explains the whole theme of the song in the first line itself beautifully. The rest of the song narrates and aggravates her helplessness and sorrow more and more as the song progresses.

I was so taken back when he says 'கண்ணில்லாத பேரை கண்டால் கனாக்கள் ஒதுங்கும் ஒதுங்கும்' and 'கனாவில் கூட இன்பம் காணாமல் இந்த ஜென்மம்'. Very depressed hearing those lines. Touches the core of our senses.

He asks in charaNam; ஒளியை போலே ஒரு துணை வந்து சென்ற துன்பம் யார்க்கும் உண்டோ? (Did anyone had a grief of getting a great companion of sight and then lost that companion?)

He brilliantly emphasizes the cruelty of blindness in these two lines:
வீதி என்றொரு வீடும் உண்டு எனக்கது சொந்தம் இன்று
வானம் என்றொரு கூரை உண்டு விழிகளும் அறியாது

and finishes with a question: (Why The God who has eyes took away the guard from us?)
கண்கள் கொண்ட தெய்வமும் காவலையும் கொண்டு சென்றதேனோ?   

He has brilliantly used the words eyes and sight (விழி & ஒளி) with extreme clarity even with tune constraints.

Will end today's contribution with a gentle and breezy duet. As plum says, it flows with the tune nicely and not a 'look at me' words. There is no viyarvai stuff, I like the lines in second stanza on how he subtly expresses the sensuality. The third line and fourth line of pallavi is one continuous line, if you read it. How Vaali sir cuts the third line with தேனா and continues the fourth line with இசைக்கும், way too effortless!

எந்தன் நெஞ்சில் நீங்காத தென்றல் நீதானா
எண்ணம் எங்கும் நீ பாடும் திருதிரு தில்லானா
இசையின் ஸ்வரங்கள் தேனா
இசைக்கும் குயில் நீ தானா வா
