Minimum 500, preferably 1000 rAsA songs with nice lyrics, not written by VM

Two songs that I featured in Jai's "1000 songs to hear before you die" are apt candidates for this thread as well.

Let me pick the first one for this post - மஞ்சக்குளிச்சு அள்ளி முடிச்சு - a song written by Alangudi Somu for the BR movie 16V.

(ஹி..ஹி..நமக்கு மஞ்சத்தண்ணி ஊத்த முறைப்பெண்ணே இல்லாமப்போச்சுங்கோ)

அதிலும் அங்கங்கே நிறுத்தி, இசைப்போக்கை மாற்றி, உருமியைக்கொண்டு உறுமி என்று தன் பாட்டுக்கு ராசா விளையாடி இருப்பார். "அழகப்பா அழகப்பா ஆணழகன் நீயப்பா"வும் அதைத்தொடர்ந்து வரும் சில வரிகளும் சிலிர்ப்பு வகை!

Like I mentioned elsewhere, this song once again underlined the importance TN middle-class and below place on the "turmeric-to-women" connection. (I think 'ada dada mAmarakkiLiyE' has this 'ஒன்ன நினச்சே மஞ்சள் அறைச்சேன்' phrase).

Besides the notion that usage of turmeric in bath somehow makes girls lovable to men, there are many other strong beliefs in TN (even a recent "kutty-chutty" episode focused on this), such as :

-it serves as a herbal equivalent for "anne french"
-it is a kirumi nAsini (antiseptic)
-it "cools" the body
-it makes the skin "shiny" and also healthy
-men shouldn't use it, as their masculinity will diminish

(None of the above are my imagination as I grew up listening to these statements from multiple women from both rural and urban background)

Well, this song starts with that cultural identity

The flow of words / lines is simply superb!

BTW, if someone had been thinking that it was VM who introduced the term "எஞ்சோட்டுப் பொண்(ணு)டுகளா" in mudhal mariyAdhai, please throw that away.

This song had it years before - எஞ்சோட்டுப் பொண்ணுகளே, இளவாழக் கன்னுகளே, வாழக்குருத்துக்களே - both folk reference and metaphors rushing out of the pen!

Then there is another cultural reference that I lamented about in the quoted post : "மாமன் மச்சான் தேடிப்புடிங்கோ"!

During such village festival of manjaththaNNi pouring, the girls typically pour it on current  or prospective grooms ONLY (i.e. purushan, muRaippaiyan, mAman magan / aththai magan kinds). Such practice is brought in the song just like that - making it a historic one!

The other lines too have flowing sarcasm by village girls on the "shapeless" men (and thus unfit as potential mates):

-வாறார் அய்யா மன்னாரு வருஷம் ஒரு நாக்குளிப்பாரு (dirty fellow) வயசுப் பொண்ணக் கண்டாக்கா வளஞ்சு நெளிஞ்சு சிரிப்பாரு (what a flow)

-பொன்னையா, மாசம் என்னய்யா? (வயிறு பெருசு, அதனால் 'கர்ப்பம்'னு கேலி), கொஞ்சம் மஞ்சத்தேச்சுக் குளிச்சுப் பாரைய்யா (பொம்பள மாதிரி இருந்துக்குட்டு ஒனக்கென்ன ஆச?) நில்லய்யா நில்லய்யா சேல கட்டிக்கொள்ளய்யா (further insult)


-ஆளப்பாரு கரியாட்டம், ஆசையிலே இது நரியாட்டம் (I think this was towards Rajini, who became the top star few years after )


-சந்திரனா? அழகில் இந்திரனா? இந்தச்சப்பாணிக்கும் சபலம் பாருங்கோ! (total disregard to the hero, Kamal, what a flow of references there!)

It's not that there're no soft moments - such are beautifully captured as well (Well, Balu Mahendra got inspired from this superb scene and had a similar one in his classic moonRam piRai with same KH-SD):

Fantastic posts App & V_S for two fantastic songs. Totally relived the song through your posts. What wonderful, imaginative and rustic lyrics that stick to the tune and to the overall happenings in the movie. 

In Manja Kulichu song, I always go broke when the song takes a soft turn as highlighted by App in these lines. SJ voice-la oru extra vaanjai irukkum, amazing feel and also the backing instruments portray that softness pitch perfectly.

Wow! Superb post App ji in bringing out all the nuances and anecdotes.    You even highlighted some phrases which are not VM's first. Definitely this song is something we get only once in a lifetime. Moreover the lyricist is not even much known. Fitting words to the tune might seem easy, but on top of it bringing the whole festival feel, fun and sarcasm associated with it is not at all easy. Of course, the uvamai of bow to eye-brows is quite ancient. Same goes with sharpness of the eyes with arrows. ("உன் விழியும் என் வாளும் சந்தித்தால்" is a famous MGR song).

The poetic twist is in that பொய் சொல்லுதே

The event titled as 'Kodai Kaala Kaatre' the starting verse of one of the most famous song sung by the veteran, will feature prominent singers rendering 25 ever immortal numbers crooned by Malaysiva Vasudevan in the music composed by Ilaiyaraja.

Time now for the second song that I mentioned in Jai's 1000 songs thread as an AvaNam for TN culture...Let me quote from my post there first:

Panju Arunachalam is credited with all annakkiLi songs, though many of the lines were as such re-used from rAsA's collection of folk songs from his village

That the re-use of "புள்ளி போட்ட ரவுக்கக்காரி, புளியம்பூ சேலக்காரி , அன்னக்கீளி ஒன்னத்தேடுதே" got referenced by rAsA himself in some interview / show adds credibility to such conclusion.

However, we need to give PA some credit for two things :

1. Providing rAsA a platform for bringing such gems hidden in TN villages to the limelight
2. Putting them together in filmy-lyric format, making necessary nakAsu vElaikaL to enable them to be easily accessible to the large TN public

These two weren't mere small achievements, considering the typical level of resistance to change those days! So, PA sir deserves a big

Now, paying attention to those lines make one swim in a ton of folk references and also enjoy the strong-TN-folk quality of "uvamaigaL being thrown in just like that, by people who were illiterates"!

One thing I notice just now is they used the same uvamai to convey different things, but ultimately implying the same, as 'annam' also refers to a 'girl/women'. As you said, these lines were not even written, they sang spontaneously.  Gone are the days!

I don't have to say anything about this film songs and music. I don't know if this film music happened before or after the VM split. All songs written by Vaali does say something.

பூபாளமே கூடாதென்னும் வானம் உண்டோ சொல் - Just this line seals it off, who Vaali sir is. I always wonder at this line as how he expresses the feeling in simple but in a very imaginative way. Once in a life time song, including the lyrics too. The focus is there in every line, no deviation. நண்பர்கள் போலே வாழ்வதற்கு மாலையும் மேளமும் தேவையென்ன. You don't have to be extremely poetic to express the beauty and bring out the theme. This is a perfect example. The line does not deviate from the sandham too while expressing in almost a colloquial way.

I don't want to leave any line behind as every line expresses the whole theme of the song. This is very rare. Normally, a song might start in a deviated fashion and slowly come to the theme at the end of anu-pallavi/charaNam. Sometimes the song theme might express the theme in one or two lines of the song, rest of the lines might wander aimlessly. Here it is not the case. It starts bang on and continues to express the same theme with a variety of analogies till it ends. Also for Vaali sir, it might have taken just few minutes to write. Nothing more to add. Lines are here to see.

After reading that impressive article about his daughter, I'm obliged to include a Panju sir song in this thread. A long term fav song, posted about many times on the web, including the long-running IR-SPB series in the hub.

விழியிலே மலர்ந்தது
உயிரிலே கலந்தது

One could dismiss this as a simple romance song where the boy does a lot of varNanai of the girl (and nothing more). Well, that is a MAJOR requirement of TFM and this song fulfills it just like that, with necessary aesthetics.

But that's not all! It definitely is more than a simple love song where the boy calls girl with some stupid uLaRals like the recent "தினம் ஏறும் தங்கத்தின் விலை நீயே" (BTW, what precedes it, "யானைத்தந்தத்தின் சிலை நீயே" is not too bad from that kAvalan song).

The first two lines of the BOK song that we are talking about go beyond such simple romance TFM stuff. These phrases have been so impressive and got repeated so much - that there are even stories and movies made with them as titles Besides, what a lovely way it expresses the closeness between thalaivan thalaivi!

The rest of the song has tons of uvamais / uruvagams and also some uyarvu naviRchi (IMHO).

Why do I call uyarvu naviRchi? Because I happened to watch the video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MgHL0SCthrg&t=1096s

Agreed, beauty is in the eye of the beholder...but still, "ஓவியனும் வரைந்ததில்லையே உன்னைப் போல்
ஓரழகைக் கண்டதில்லையே" ellAm too much and prompted me to qualify this as uyarvu naviRchi

All the words / phrases / lines sit beautifully on the thuLLal melody, so soothing to the listener :

-பெண்ணென்னும் பொன்னழகே அடடா எங்கெங்கும் உன்னழகே

-உன் நினைவே போதுமடி மனம் மயங்கும் மெய் மறக்கும் புது உலகின் வழி தெரியும் பொன் விளக்கே தீபமே

-காவியத்தில் நாயகி கற்பனையில் ஊர்வசி கண்களுக்கு விளைந்த மாங்கனி காதலுக்கு வளர்ந்த பூங்கொடி

-கையளவு பழுத்த மாதுளை பாலில் நெய்யளவு பரந்த புன்னகை

-மோக மழை தூவும் மேகமே யோகம் வரப் பாடும் ராகமே

While the என்னடி மீனாட்சி song starts and ends with a couple of lines by Bharathiyar, and also supposedly had some inspiration from indhi kyA huA (as per "The Hindu" article), Vaali made sure he had a ton of nice stuff.

Stuff that instantly set the TN youths on fire, singing the song everywhere in that time period!

"நேற்றோடு நீ சொன்ன வார்த்தை காற்றோடு போயாச்சி" so easily aligned with young men who had "love failures / dhAdi"! And there were simply too many in that time period in such a state

Thus it became their instant anthem!

rAsA / Vaali / Sridhar / Kamal combo made sure that they stepped out of many cliches with that song, such as 

-love failure means some slow azhuva moonjippAttu
-western stage song means only for jolly / club dance
-sogappAttil guitar mAdhiri thuLLal karuvi varapdAdhu (play solo violin / shehnai etc)

Well, one can't say who got the thodarkadhai-siRukadhai business from whom, but that was the time period when relationship often got compared to thodar kadhai in TFM.

GA penned the famous "உறவுகள் தொடர்கதை, உணர்வுகள் சிறுகதை" in the same 1978 while Vaali has this lovely saraNam in this song:

அன்பில் விளைந்த உறவு ஒரு தொடர்கதை
அந்த உறவு உனக்கொரு சிறுகதை
கண்ணன் தனிமையிலே பாட, ராதை தன் வழியே ஓட
இந்தப்பிரிவைத் தாங்குமோ என் மனம்

He then adds a very special uvamai to depict the deemed FRAGILE nature of her love for him: 
ஒரு நூலில் ஆடுகின்ற ஊஞ்சல்போன்றதடி நாளும் மாறுகின்ற உன்மனம்
(what a nice twist in the movie with the title, இளமை ஊஞ்சலாடுகிறது! Perhaps the director wanted people to understand the title as "instability of luvvu in the TN context" )

However, the first saraNam is even better - especially the line I quoted in the beginning of this post - sweet!

The other lines too are filled with uvamai / uruvagangaL and are enjoyable :

உந்தன் உதட்டில் நிறைந்திருக்கும் பழரசம்
அந்த மனத்தில் மறைந்திருக்கும் துளி விஷம்

SPB powers the song with tons of emotions and the result was a classic!

The album that made the pulse of TN youngsters racing had became a pioneer to make TFM the mainstay at teakkadais and buses!

Wow! What a wonderful post App ji!  Really enjoyed. Very true about the revolution those songs created. Really getting nostalgic when hearing this song. Alwarpet, Eldams Road, Nandanam, Cenotoph lane, where I saw Kamal and Rajini for the first time. I think in 81/82 time frame. I used to see Kamal's car coming out of his house (I think now that house has become his trust right?), with Kamal almost half-sleepye going for shoot, while we go for morning walk. My grandmother's house was very nearby (Co-operative Colony, next street to Park Sheraton). Same way, Rajini used to live just opposite to our street in a rented house that time. When I saw he was without moustache (I think before his marriage). Even actor Suman used to pass by our street in car many times. Sowkar Janaki's house was also in Cenatoph lane. My cousins would force me and take me near to their houses to get their glimpse. Sometimes we get to see them, many times we don't. Those were the days. Our grandparent's house was sold for a meagre amount around 90s. Now some complex has come there. This time also when I went and passed by, just gazed at that location with heavy heart.

Another song from IO that deserves to be part of this thread - the huge hit தண்ணி கருத்துருச்சு கண்ணு தவள சத்தம் கேட்டுருச்சு...

Those two lines themselves were terrific and had everyone humming them everywhere those days.

It was a novel way of telling "hey, it's getting dark, night time!" While people who dismissed anything folk as low-class didn't care for these, others had definitely found poetic beauty there! First of all, one needed some local knowledge to even decipher that it meant night

தண்ணி கருத்துருச்சு - while this could be true for any body of water, it was striking when one places a well in his / her mental vision. Not a small well but a reasonably big sized well that was used as the main source of irrigation in some parts of TN (like in the area I grew up).

Someone sitting by its side and watching the little groups of fish play around in the clear water, enjoying the occasional (scary) move of snake(s) creating ripples in the water, rain drops creating circular waves...it is that well water, which during daytime can even show the pebbles at the bottom clearly (boys used to drop coin, dive and pick it, as a swimming game), that gets darker and darker as the sun sets and the night descends...

In such wells, apart from the little fish and occasional thaNNippAmbu, the other major uyirinam was FROG of course. I'm not bilogically knowledgeable enough to confirm if the frogs mate inside water or on land, but they were plenty in both places - i.e. in that well and the surrounding paddy fields and other vegetable gardens.

That தவள சத்தம் கேட்டுருச்சு, the kirrr-kirrr sounds made by frogs indicating the arrival of night time (possibly their mating calls), is such a terrific observation by the poet and both these lines set the mood of the song in a deadly manner!

The song starts with a solo violin that sounds melancholic to me. One might wonder - is this not a matRa song?

Why infuse such "avalachchuvai" in such a song?

The song is otherwise explicit in its purpose - a boy inviting his lady love for mating - telling her it's time now for their "business".

OTOH, while the movie situation is also explicit (well, for its time) the roles are reversed. Here, it's a girl walking into a boy's bedroom. The boy initially had no hots for her (because he is deeply in love with her friend)...but both end up having intimacy.

While the opening prelude is quite sensuous, there's also a strong tinge of melancholy - that could confuse most listeners (similar solo violin comes back in an interlude too)...some could even question - what is the logic? Is this not supposed to be a fun song?

Well, honestly I don't know what was going on in rAsA's mind.

Here is my take.

- Looking from a movie situation PoV, this is supposedly a turning point, breaking the "main love" because of this "iLamai oonjal Adal" between a side character (widow friend of heroini) and the hero. That way, the hero-heroini kAdhal is in danger. Possibly rAsA wanted to underline that.

-From a lyrical PoV, there're a couple of "sOga" references. Let me try to get the portions that could have possibly inspired rAsA to have such enjoyable azhuvAchchi sounds :

#1 ஊரும் ஒறங்கிருச்சு நாம ஒதுங்க எடம் கெடச்சிருச்சு
While bringing in a bed-room situation, the poet also strongly throws-in a big social issue. That of a ton of people -like those two who dance in the open- not having a place of their own, even to sleep 

It's just my wild imagination that the soft-natured rAsA got emotional with this line, considering that many people will have to wait for the whole village to sleep...before they can find their hiding place (that too in the open) to have intimacy. What a sad situation for millions in the land! pOdu that solo violin!

#2 தருசாக்கெடக்குது பூமி அட இதுக்கா படச்சான் சாமி
The contextual meaning is quite obvious (that of unfulfilled desire of the girl), which is sOgam in itself. Going further, a social thinking mind could also bring up images of dry land / struggling farmers etc. pOchchudA mood out, sOga violin!

That's because Maestro already knows the story and how it is going to end, especially Jayanthi (Jayachitra). This desire is going to end her life. That's what the solo violin denotes. My take

தண்ணி கருத்திருச்சு continuation...

Though word doubling "adukkuththodar" and syllable doubling "rettaikkiLavi" are language beautification tools and are at times used beautifully in conversation and poems, I'm not a big fan of them in general - especially so when there's no meaning / emphasis attached to such usage.

For e.g. simply doubling to mask poetic inability / composing limitations etc is a big irritant with me. The MR-VM-ARR gumbal has made it a fad because they had success in their first project (rukkumaNi rukkumaNi was followed by a ton of such - uyirE uyirE, nenjinilE nenjinilE, snEgithanE snEgithanE etc) and others too followed with such gibberish (oorvashi oorvashi, anbE anbE, rOjA rOjA etc). Such meaningless, contextless doubling is a major irritant to me ("why these fellows think we're dumb kids, repeating such things"nu erichchal varum).

The song under discussion, OTOH, is a quintessential use of this "doubling" in an acceptable manner. That is, acceptable - even enjoyable - to a fellow like me

The song starts with "ஏ முத்து முத்தா" - though it's not strictly a double, the word முத்து gets repeated. Appropriately so! மொட்டு விட்ட வாச முல்ல, that typically occurs in bunches on the creeper, gets a lovely comparison with pearls, for their apperance. Well, I'm not sure what the boy finds in the girl as "pearl-like-jasmine" and cannot resist touching it..."அட தொட்டுப்புட்டா தோஷமில்ல வாடி புள்ள"

After the first saraNam, there's a similar thing "ஏ கிட்டக்கிட்ட வந்து வந்து கட்டிக்கடி" where the first is adukkuththodar. Once again, very appropirate (like சின்னச்சின்ன ஆசை ) where the doubling of word shows the degree of comparison, like "getting closer and closer", to showcase the togetherness / nerukkam! Actually, there's a nice uvamai that immediately follows, to make it even more explicit -"அட்டயப்போல் சட்டுன்னுதான் ஒட்டிக்கடி"

(Those who do not know how a leach sticks / clings / attaches itself to a person are asked to visit Silent Valley near Palakkad on a rainy day for a deadly experience)!

Then comes the 'ஏ கொத்துக்கொத்தா காச்சிருக்கும் தென்னங்கொல்ல", which requires no justification from me - that is the typical use of adukkuththodar / example in grammar books :)Such doubling helps to explain the multiples / multitudes / bunches etc (and here we're left to guess what kind of fruits the lyricist refers to)

The final ones are the sweetest, as one showcases a local idiom and another is sheer poetry!

What is காதும் காதும் வச்சது போல்? While such usage is well-known for people of prior gen, I'm not sure everyone of this gen can readily understand this usage. It's so aptly used for the situation - where the two need to get together without ANYONE ELSE knowing! Quietly

கண்ணும் கண்ணும் பேசுறப்போ பாஷை இல்லே - wow! When the eyes meet, what is the need for a word to be spoken?

Vaali (hopefully these were his lines and not borrowed by rAsA from some of his area folk songs) must get and for packing so much into this supposedly dappAnguththu / pAluRavu number!

(Of course, I refrain from discussing rest of the lines in this song, which are pure pAluRavu / intimacy stuff, with not much hidden...and completely suitable to the movie's context)
