B S Sasireka, who sang IR's first melody for TFM - #54 குக்குக்கூ குக்குக்கூ குயிலே வா வா

Obviously, the MD was not IR, it was his senior G K Venkatesh when IR was still working as assistant. However, this particular song's melody was by IR himself, as described by Muthulingam in his book and other web articles. One such sample is in this link:

என் பாட்டுக்கு மெட்டுக் கொடுத்த அந்த உதவியாளர் யார் என்றால் அவர்தான் உலகப்புகழ் பெற்ற இன்றைய இசைஞானி இளையராஜா. ஆனால் அந்தப் படத்தில் அவர் பெயர் வராது.

இளையராஜாவும், கங்கை அமரனும் எனக்கு ஏற்கெனவே பழக்கமான நண்பர்கள். அதனால் நான் தங்கியிருந்த அறைக்கே வந்து அந்த மெட்டுக்களைப் பாடிக் காண்பித்து எழுத வைத்தார்கள்.

இந்தப் பாடலைப் பாடியவர்கள் எஸ். ஜானகி, சசிரேகா, பூரணி, சீர்காழி கோவிந்தராஜன் ஆகியோர். நான் எழுதிய முதல் பாடலே மெட்டுக்கு எழுதியதுதான்.

ஆக இளையராஜா இசையில் முதன்முதல் சினிமாவுக்குப் பாடல் எழுதியவன் என்ற பெருமை எனக்கு உண்டு. அல்லது என்னுடைய பாடலுக்குத்தான் அவர் முதன்முதல் இசையமைத்தார் என்றும் சொல்லலாம்.

There is an additional information on the 'thanjAvooru seemaiyilE' song that I could see from the web - that this was the first ever TFM song of singer B S Sasireka.

An interesting coincidence - that IR's first TFM melody also signaled the debut of this talented singer (yet not at top-level, like SJ-PS-KSC et al)!

So, IR's song #0 for TFM (which got released with GKV as MD) was BSS's Song #1 for TFM

This song is typical of a number of songs that IR gave to BSS as solo songs - with a small tinge of pathos as well depicting a "vulnerable" woman. I'll keep repeating this thought whenever such songs come up in this thread.  Actually, her voice itself is well-suited for this category of girls who are vulnerable (not sure if other MD's used her voice too in the same way and that was why her range / reach got quite limited in TFM).

Though she had been often part of "multi-voice" songs that IR composed (i.e. more than 2 singers, as in the case of thanjAvooru seemaiyilE that had 4 voices), vAzhvE mAymA kind of solo songs were also given to her from time to time and she did a neat job, bringing the right emotions mostly. This particular song was quite popular on radio those days and I didn't even recognize them to be IR songs at that point of time - little I would have thought then that someday I'll be writing about it (on the internet or anywhere)

Excellent interludes that bring the tension on screen (BTW, this movie was based on Sujatha novel 'gAyathri'). Right from the early days, IR had always used flute & rhythm combo in many innovative ways to bring up a variety of emotions and this song is a great example - depicts both the pathetic condition of the girl and the tension / thrilling background in the situation.

The interesting part of the video is the villain actions of Rajinikanth which he does effortlessly

Few years ago, I was present at a cultural event where SashiRekha was the Chief guest for a cultural event. After singing few MSC songs like Kanji Pattudthi,  welcome Hero, rathi devi sannidhiyil etc and Manoj Gyan songs like sendhoorapoove, maamarathu, rathiri nerathu etc, I was desperately wating for her to sing some of my fav IR songs like melam kotta, ppove idhu poojai kaalame, Thendral kaatrum  etc. To my surpride, she did not talk about IR or her experience with him where as she was praising MSV, Manoj Gyan, TR, MGR, JJ . I must say her voice had not aged at all. To my relief she finally concluded with "isho isho", the only IR number saying it was a big hit those days. May be she has forgotten her golden gems with IR or their relationship has soured.

"Apt emotions" have always been IR's forte - this song is an early example of this capability! While doing great justice to the theme (of someone begging for food), he manages to keep the interest in the song by not making it too dramatic or extremely melancholic or filmy

No wonder he brought in BSS with that "vulnerable, pAvam girl" kind of voice to do this song  There is another newcomer, Neeraja, who got introduced to TFM in this song. So, IR got busy introducing new voices early on in his MD career and wasn't content with giving hits just using experienced and famous singers.

thuNaiyiruppAl meenAtchi also had that fantastic "sugamO Ayiram" song which our @nom_d_plum loves and have written a lot about. While this BSS-Neeraja song is not that grade but purely for providing some situational emotion, IR makes use of the interludes as his special opportunities as always and I love the one for 2nd saraNam. The other two are great as well, with shehnAi enjoying harmony with strings in one of them - no doubt one of the many novelties of IR.

Very popular song those days, frequently played in the IOKS and honestly I never paid attention to the "other" female voice (or voices, as I found out today) and had mentally accounted this song as a "Janaki song" This was one of the many "multi-singer" songs by IR where BSS was one of the voices.

Sweet melody with lovely interludes! The first one with thuLLal solo violin followed by flute, the second one having shehnAi lead the charge and the third one embellished with strings harmony.

There are only 3 saraNams on the disk version and also in the "audio-only" youtube hosted by inreco. However, as one can see in the video YT, there had been 4 saraNams in the song - the first one having those singer Umadevi portions (for the small girls on the screen). That saraNam also has the violin interlude while the second one is quite abrupt, without interlude.

Actually, I used to feel the "abruptness" in the beginning of the first saraNam when they used to transmit those days on radio (like, why there's no smoothness between the interlude and the beginning of saraNam). Now I know why There was another "first" saraNam and that got removed for the disk (possibly to accommodate the vinyl size ).

In any case, the video here as well the lyrics have all four. This song was the second hit song for BSS under IR's music (after vAzhvE mAyamA).

This is perhaps the first BSS song that had a lot of airtime on horn speakers in the villages of TN The album Lakshmi was very popular in the villages (besides frequently getting played on radio, especially IOKS). So, for the first time an IR-BSS combo solo was very popular in village functions, blasting thru the air - and I am a first hand witness

Also, this did not have any kind of "azhuvAchchi feel" that the previous BSS songs we had seen in this thread so far - this is a joyous happy song with some very nice lines written by Alangudi Somu who had a good grip on TN country life. IR had a sweet melody / flowing orch for this song and it was a good opportunity that BSS made use of.

What's more, it had the beautiful Sridevi on screen (and hence got covered in the thread that I ran to capture all Sridevi songs by IR at the time of her death).

A quick end note on that "ஊருக்கெல்லாம் பாக்கு வச்சு" that most youth of today may not be aware of (or even non-youth who had sophisticated lifestyle in cities without much exposure to village life):

- Those days, when relatives (and associates too) get invited for wedding, it was mandatory that the hosts personally visit and give the invitation.
- Sending the invitation thru post was considered an insult.
- In village side, when the invitation is given, it was typically accompanied by "veththalai-pAkku".
- This cultural aspect is so easily embedded in this song and also getting used for a pun as the next line goes as "ஊரையெல்லாம் பாக்க வச்சு"

Yet another of the many "female duet" numbers that BSS sang for rAsA This one with Shailaja in the popular hit movie by Panju - SPM - Rajini combo.

Interesting first line in pallavi that is quite opposite of the colloquial phrase that praises boys as "சாண் பிள்ளை ஆனாலும் ஆண் பிள்ளை" (actually there's an IR song with SJ with that as pallavi, for R Pandiyarajan - sAN piLLai AnAlum nee AN piLLai thAnyA ). This song, OTOH, laments the fact that this little boy has to suffer child labor to help his family (and the picturization has all the melodrama - widowed sick mother, lot of younger siblings, boy doing all kinds of jobs even though he is not even tall enough to ride a regular adult bike etc).

One interesting connection to BSS in the visuals is the "latchumi film poster" (2-vathu vAram ad) that comes up during the prelude of the song We just covered that 'mELam kotta nEram varum' song in the previous post and here in this song that is featured in the video!

Well, unfortunately, SPS scores miles ahead of BSS in this duet With her thuLLal voice and all the extra "alukkal-kulukkal" she does, especially in the later part of the saraNam - the last line before anu pallavi - SPS is simply awesome!

However, BSS does a neat job as well and got another well-deserved hit! That way, IR was giving her all nice and hit songs (though not all were solos or supre hits). In this thread, so far we have cataloged 5 and out of those 4 were hit songs! An awesome 80% hit rate so far!

Yes, the third singer (or rather the FIRST singer) is Umadevi.

The song starts off with Umadevi's voice (sang for little girl Baby Sumathi, the taller girl, whose role will be played by Latha later).  It continues with the same voice for that little girl throughout.

Sasirekha is the second voice, singing for Baby Indra and actress Sumitra later.  SJ joins in for Latha after the point the girls grow up.

This song had made me cry like a baby.  An emotion-filled composition.  The interludes add to the melancholy.

Here you go, one more female duet for BSS from the same year, this one with Vani Jayaram - but unfortunately, this didn't become popular (me hearing it for the first time today ) . Either never made it to radio those days (and I was a regular listener) or I don't recall it. This song is a reminder that if IR had not chosen to be different in creativity, the TF field could have easily pulled him down to the mediocre levels of others in late 70's. What a transformation he had to keep making album after album to be relevant!

Two other songs from this album are evergreen in my mind (kichu kichu thAmbALam by SJ and mahArANi unaiththEdi varum nEramE by PJ - both those are still fresh).

Back to another "vulnerable woman" mode song

Going thru the whole list of songs BSS had sung for IR, majority of those can be placedl in one of the following three categories :
1. "vulnerable woman" styled mild pathos
2. Female duets (either friends or rivals or simply for better effect)
3. Songs with multiple singers (3 or more) where BSS is an "also-run", such as thanjAvooru seemaiyilE

Very few songs are exceptions (such as 'mELam kotta nEram varum') and thus those are special ones. Perhaps this is the reason BSS wasn't very happy with the kind of chances she got from IR (and thus did less of his songs on-stage, as told by thumburu in an earlier post)

Well, this song from agal viLakku is quite a nice one - with classic IR melody and minimal orch. It would have been nice if I could locate the video that should have featured the great actress, Shobha - unfortuntately, could not find easily. (I may have to get the whole movie link and scan).

Female duet, another with SPS. However, I cannot simply dismiss this song as "yet another female duet of BSS", because of a personal nostalgia

Perhaps I wrote about it in mayyam.com at some point of time but since lot of time has passed (and also that site is not accessible from India nowadays it seems), it doesn't hurt to talk about it here once more. Those with an aversion to such "nostology" stories, please feel free to skip the next section

There were this aNNan-thambi who stayed in our school hostel and my classmates in high school (we too lived in the same campus in the village as both my parents worked there). Both had tons of their territory's "vettu-kuththu-veera-pradhAba" stories, the name of the aNNan being "Bose" The thambi was my ball-badminton team mate and we had a very successful team during our +2 days when we represented the school at TN state level. This guy was given a nickname "kOzhi-கோழி" by his hostel mates and used to get very angry whenever others called him so. (I don't know the reason behind the nickname to this day).

The connection with this song is when we played at the Madurai district level in Batlagundu (வத்தலக்குண்டு) and were returning to Dindigul (திண்டுக்கல்) in a bus. One of the other players called him "kOzhi" and he got so angry and was shouting at him. All of us, including the PT master / team coach had some laughter. It was either immediately or a little later that the bus played this song I was hearing this song for the first time and it got stored so indelibly in my memory!

The song was a hit among villages while other songs made it everywhere ("vAda vAttudhu" is a classic, "enna pAttuppAda" is a fun number, both big hits. "chinna chinna pAththi katti" wasn't that popular per my memory and didn't get included in #IR_Hit_History).

On-screen, this appears to be a fun number and the presence of Shobha makes it really special - what a great actress who can so easily assume any kind of role and do a great job! Seeing her on-screen also reminds me of a close friend from +2 days who was a mad fan which even led to his crush for chemistry teacher with "Shobha-like" actions. (e.g. rolling the tongue tip on lower-set of teeth below the lips, which he used to imitate all the time). That fellow later studied BSMS and must be treating some COVID-19 patients now

A small trivia - this was the "intro" movie for the actress Ambika who later became a famous heroine. (My college hostel-mate in next room was her admirer, even having the Bombay Dyeing calendar with her big size picture hung in the room). Quite a sweet song, with interesting melody and some tongue-twisting pAdal varigaL! Some interesting poetic stuff ("நாடும் நதியே ஆடும் கலையே") - by M G Vallaban, who was also director of the movie.

With the reference to "nadhi" and also santoor sound, this song should make it to "IR_Santoor_Waters" thread

Of course,  "one more female duet, another one with SJ" This song was a regular on IOKS those days (actually all songs from that thaippongal album, especiallay theertha karaiyinilE and kaN malargaLin azahippidhazh).

Movie that featured Sivaji Ganesan / produced by K Balaji.

Those were the days when Balaji was still signing up IR (deepam, thyAgam and this). 

I don't know how and why the decision by Balaji happened not to use IR anymore  Perhaps it was due to IR not willing to work with TMS. Balaji was having NT in all his movies those days and Sivaji too stopped working with IR. Only years later Sivaji chose to come back to IR - possibly to promote Prabhu (in veLLai rOjA), agreeing to have MV as the playback singer.

OTOH, Balaji never came back to IR - not even for Kamal Rajini movies. He even used Gangai Amaran for vAzhvE mAyam / sattam but stayed away from IR. In later years, I think their family production house (Suresh Balaji) had YSR / Bhava as MD's for their movies but not IR, IIRC. It could be that IR didn't want to do another movie for Balaji (after perhaps some pressure to use TMS and related humiliation). Whatever, this was the last movie by IR for that production house AFAIK. And all the three albums that IR gave to Balaji were fantastic without question!

This is a "multi-singer" song and BSS got the hit number - frequently played on radio, especially IOKS. Also on buses those days. The other female singer, Kalyani Menon's only song with IR. (Talked about her in another thread - mother of Rajiv Menon who had that fantastic album KKKK by ARR. Her big hit song was with MSV in Sujatha - nee varuvAy ena nAn irundhEn).

The music disk had 3 saraNams but the video youtube has only two, the second saraNam not in movie.

First-time-listen for me. I had looked around the web for this song as this is part of Anbu sir's spreadsheet (and also cross-checked with the vinyl cover thread).

The song is indeed available on YT (audio only, the movie never got released and thus no video possible anyways).

Regular themmAngu song - with a threat to protest. pAdal varigaL by Vaali. Nothing special about the singers or melody or orch, IR had done 100's of such songs over the years. While such songs meet his minimum standards, many have nothing that can "stand out" for an average IRF.

Interesting to note that IR did not give any song to BSS in any of the albums that got released in 1980. That is one year that I personally consider as a "musical peak" in TFM history
(Also one of the peaks in IR's career - with albums like nizhalgaL, johny, ullAsappaRavaigaL, guru, nenjathai kiLLAdhE, iLamaikkOlam, moodupani and such - it was clearly a year of extremely fresh showers - rather tsunami - from IR, unlike anything TFM has seen ever before). Well, it was big loss for BSS.

She got this small little song in the biggest hit album of 1981. IR & his brothers also produced the movie, so it was a great approval nod from IR of the singing capabilities of BSS.

A very simple and short song - no lyricist is given credit (the album sleeve calls it "traditional") - in a church setting.

The most popular and most special Sasirekha song under IR's baton.

Special in the sense this cannot be bracketed inside any of those "BSS-templates". Actually, this song is so special that it cannot be categorized as following "ANY-TFM-TEMPLATE"  
For one, it does not have the typical "prelude-pallavi-interlude-saranam" style. Besides, it has portions with and without rhythm. And even the "interlude" is atypical of most interludes of tfm songs. Very novel song when it arrived and remains fresh to this day! 

Despite the mild azhuva moonji portion towards the end ('கரையில் தூஊக்கி போட்டான்") BSS has done a fantastic job! Especially the portion where she starts with that 'thanana nanana" humming in this song is so awesome! (Perhaps this was later the inspiration for TR to sign her up for 'indira lOgaththu sundari' song - which follows a somewhat similar style of singing).

BSS had the special privilege of singing with both IR & KH in the same year in two special, unique songs. Much like 'vizhiyil vizhundhu', yet another "vizhi" song in a somewhat non-standard format, for a movie with musician as the protagonist!

It's interesting to note that both IR & KH chose this singer for the first movies they (or their family's company) produced! Of course, she was suitable for each of those songs - with melancholy here and there - but there could also be other considerations (like long-term-association, possibly from the days that each one of those were struggling to come up in the industry). Well, this is just another of my wild imaginations

Well, wiki seems to agree with me  It's quite interesting to see in that page that her original name was Vijayalakshmi. And the names of her children are "Tiffany, Priscilla & Evelyn" - all typical American girl names Well, that page also says she lives in NJ

KBR did a slightly different movie where he did the lead role but not as a regular filmy hero but as a scheming villain. This song captures the whole character (please watch the video to check what's going on):

So, though this song is styled as a "duet" with SPB, there are two female singers and there is SPS also (who had given the voice for the wife).

BSS had the portion which was supposed to be "sensuous" but it's pretty obvious she could not do any justice One cannot blame her as this had been a limitation for most of the singers of that time. Per recent interview of KSC to Sudha Raghunath on YT, even chEchi struggled with such songs (and needed encouragement / counselling from none other than SJ to handle it). Poor BSS - she also would have appreciated some training by Janaki ammA

The song was quite popular, got played often on radio - but didn't reach the heights of albums such as thooRal ninnu pOchchu or mundhAnai mudichchu...

My most favorite number of B.S. Sasirekha.  A short-song jam-packed with emotion.  I had always thought that IR did minimal orchestration here to showcase her voice.

Pathos song with a melody drenched in melancholy. (Similar style as "udhaya geetham pAduvEn").

Interestingly, IR (and perhaps Mahendran) are clever in making this song not sound too melodramatic. For one, they have not used a too powerful voice (such as TMS, KJY, PS or SJ) but chose to use relatively younger and perhaps inexperienced voices of BSS and Brahmanandan. Secondly, they made the female voice sounded as "multiple" (harmonized in choir style but sounding very Indian).

So, the end result is a song that pierces your heart at the same time not sounding too filmy melodramatic (as in, say "sOdhanai mEl sOdhanai pOdhumadA sAmi" - a movie and song the director Mahendran was earlier associated with).
