"Ok, what if you take a leaf out of “Rum Bum Bum” (Michael Madana Kamarajan) and create a song. Kadhal Illamal actually starts at the charanam of Rum Bum Bum. Most probably the tune could have been a replacement tune of the other song. Both the movies were produced by Panchu Arunachalam and so I can’t deny that theory.
The song have the same colour as Rum Bum Bum, the guitars, brass section, strings and the drums, you have the full ensemble. The movie has an interesting story too. Kalikalam was written and directed by Panch Arunachalam. He tried to launch his first son Shanmuga in an important role (almost like a villain) and the movie failed. The interesting part about the song is it had Subbu Panchu (Panchu Arunachalam’s second son and now a popular actor) in a dancing cameo."

Listened to this song for the first time recently. Amazing interludes. However, the audio seems hollow on my end. The upload by Prasad Manokaran sounds better.

   "The song that I have chosen today is not your typical Khamas song, nor it’s your typical comedy song picturised on a comedy actor (in this case Janakaraj). I have always seen Ilaiyaraaja playbacking for Janakaraj and the song is wonderfully orchestrated with typical classical instruments and you can hear the morsing in the background. The interludes are completely different because the sequences are different but Ilaiyaraaja seamlessly links it back to the original song."

Going through app_engine's TFM Hits list and discovering quite a few rare songs that I'd never heard.

One of them, Kaiththaalam Podum - Naan Sonnathey Sattam (1988), seems familiar. Is there a female singer (with chorus) version of this song in a different movie?

Nadhiya Moidu's Zumba song.  She was an actress with an impeccable sense of style and dressing.  

And this was just 1987!  People are talking about Zumba as a big thing now, when Maestro IR composed exclusively for "exercise / gym workout" as early as that.  So much innovation for that decade, all by ONE composer.  SJ sounds very stylish and what a transformation she has had, during the period she sang for IR!

This song is eerie, romantic, somewhat sensuous, sad and haunting, all at the same time!  A fine composition with few takers.  I wonder what "situation" led IR to compose this gem.  SJ is top-notch; nothing of a surprise.
