Gautham in the NEP special show in vijay says he used to buy Rahman CDs in the 90s like how he passionately bought Raaja cassettes in the 80s. But he was very eloquent about Raaja eventhough he tried to put them on the same pedestal. Now I am almost certain he won't work with Raaja again.
Guess he is going to win back all those 'lost' fans.

NEPV, Good only no? Far better in certain aspects than VTV. Lack of superficiality, more maturity in the choices. More soft colours, diffused light, more lengthy medium/long shots (though one on terrace with the crane was a bit 'off').
No major off putting assault to senses like Trisha & Simbu here. And the casting was all right (dubbing was little off though, especially Rajini's brother in law dude, who plays Jeeva's dad), Nani does better, I'm told, want to see it too.

I thought all the three conflicts were handled sensibly and sensitively.
GVM introduces Varun and Nithya to be living in the same apartment complex. Nithya does not quite mingle with the kids around her and prefers spending her free time reading books in the park. First time she meets Varun, she sees him holding a book in his hand and thinks she has finally found a buddy. Varun on the other hand likes Nithya very much but has other interests too like cricket. One fine day when it comes between cricket and her, Varun chooses the former in order to evade one of the harshest insults a boy at that age can endure - "Are you a girl?". Well played there Gautham. Nithya after having deserted by her only friend feels extremely disappointed.
They meet up in high school and start becoming friends again after Nithya forgives Varun after Varun's long due apology. Things go really well until Samantha starts taking a little responsibility. School pupil reader. And naturally she could not spend as much time as she used to. She is still madly in love with Varun and more than the anger factor its the disappointment of Varun's words at that juncture which hurt her the most. "I can't believe you of all people are saying this Varun."
The second time they meet up after a break, Nithya being the most romantic wants to set things right. Last time it was because of her, when she decided to take some responsibilities that the relationship had to fail. That's what she thinks anyway. This time she wants to completely forget everything around her and make Varun her world. I mean she was still the same until that point. Debate competitions, dance etc., She always had something going for her. And when they converse (before the annan's peN paarkkum episode) about their future for a little bit, Nithya quickly admits that she has not thought anything about what to do next and all she wants is to be with him. Such a beautiful scene that - immediately after they confess their love.
Then Nithya takes a (perfectly placed if I may say) long vacation leaving Varun to think about other important things around him. And after his family is literally shaken by an incident, he realizes how much he owes to them. For the first time in his life he decides to take some responsibilities on his own. Gautham turns the tables very well in these set of scenes. Varun becoming the Nithya of school days and Nithya is already the Varun from high school, with a little more intelligence and sensibility may be. Nithya back from her vacation is completely devastated to know that Varun's interest towards her has decreased substantially. How can he do it to her? I mean she gave up everything, all her interests, friends etc., just to be with him. And he does not even respect that. And even at that point she wants to be with him somehow. She wants to write the CAT, go to kozhikode with him etc., but Varun categorically denies them. And unlike the high-school-Varun she really tries hard to make it work. Really liked her characterization there.
The mottai maadi scene is quite important to the film and does mottai score or what. Plays the title song in the keyboard, violins, a single violin etc., Beautiful.

There is no love formation establishment. No continuity and hence little basis for louu to be strong and enduring. It's a different issue that only very few films get this right. Still, they have at least the plot elements keeping things interesting. Rejected

many raaja fans feel that this movie is better but feel a little threatened to say it openly as the opposite camp would start pestering them for being 'biased' - to hell with bias - this is much better movie. however for a middle aged man spoilt by verbal and 'directorial touch' assaulted "love stories" through 80s and 90s, the lack of movement in this moments film is highly sleep inducing.

Re: Maestro's magic in Neethaane En Ponvasantham
I'm also genuinely confused about some of the reactions. enna nuance? nEththu anganga (mostly in the first half) Otti padaththai online-la thirumbap pArththuttEn. (I was thinking of and I still might catch it a second time in a theatre.) As I said elsewhere, the film really takes off only towards the end. The first half is a series of lifeless vignettes sliced between utterly ineffective time transitions. (The sound is so 'off' it seems like a B-grade film where the characters have to talk off their lines and go through the setup scenes to arrive at the key moments; I know it's outrageous but it was a bit like how conversations happen in porn films.) Park scene, school scenes-lallAm enna nadakkudhungRadhu okay, what was good about these scenes? Not a single good moment till the first mottamaadi scene. I just didn't get a sense of these 2 people hopelessly falling in love. Far from being 'slow,' I found the film too rushed here hardly lingering on any of the characters at any point. All you get to see is some pointless slow motions and fade-outs/ins. And then there are overpowering songs. There's no sense of lost time. It was like the lead pair themselves say, let's forget what happened in between (as it's not in the movie anyway). Most of the "what they've gone through" is merely talked about, through verbose dialogue and voiceovers (typically poor; very reminiscent of the fiasco that VA was on this count).
Going by what happens when they do meet, the film gives a sense that they were just sulking within themselves about losing each other. For all the talk about doing their own stuff, you don't get to see how it has changed them at all. Their feelings it seems have remained unperturbed (without talking to each other for years!). I mean, I kinda got Nithya's reaction when she says book padikkaRA mAdhiri irundhudhu. But that sort of indifference she's gained over the years is totally lost at later points. Some reviews have talked about how this film is beyond the 'excesses' of "enakku nee, unakku naan" love, but I totally differ here. Yes, there are moments of disillusionment, but the film kept spiralling back to it all the same. It never seemed to be about disillusionment if you look past the dialogue which painfully keep reiterating their respective perspectives/disappointments. So far from being a modern messy romance (VTV was the proper messy romance, not this), I found it all quite puritanical. (Like saying, whom are we kidding? They're of course going to join hands!)
Btw, I found (weirdly another parallel to VA for me) there were 2 cuts in what I saw on big screen, both important to the film. Why would they do this? I don't understand. The conversation between Varun and his brother after the marriage proposal scene and (very weirdly) the initial part of the motta maadi scene - when the news about his getting through 2 IIMs is revealed, as they enter the terrace and till the first 'disappointment' moment for Varun (ivan engap pOvappORAnnu nenachchiyA?). I saw only from the moment afterwards where they brush this first 'urasal' aside and talk about going to Kozhikode.

+1 watched the movie today, totally liked it. Far better than VTV and easily one of the best movie of 2012.
what`s wrong with critic`s? why this movie is thrashed
Liked the way GPM used Raja song to convey the pain/joy/breakup etc . would be watching the movie again
