As a reasonably regular poster here, I have nothing much to contribute on IR-75 program(s) by this Sun TV fellows and TN film field kuppai gumbal
(One thing is being in North America, can't attend any of such events...besides, I'm not a TV watcher and am never up-to-date on such events).

ராசா-நடிகைகள் தொலைக்காட்சியில் தோன்றியது குறித்து பலருக்கும் நல்ல கருத்துக்கள் இல்லை (சுகாசினி வேறு கொடுமை செய்திருக்கிறார்).

அப்படியாக அதுவும் பெருசா ஒன்னுமில்லை.

இயக்குனர் நிகழ்ச்சி குழப்பமில்லை என்று சொல்கிறார்கள். என்றாலும், சிறப்புமில்லை.

"ராசாவை மக்களுக்குப்பிடிக்காது, ரகுமான் கொடுப்பது தான் புலிப்பால்" என்றெல்லாம் உளறின ரவிக்குமாரை எல்லாம் இப்படிப்பட்ட நிகழ்ச்சியில் பார்வையாளராகக் கூட உள்ளே விடக்கூடாது.

அப்படிப்பட்ட கொடுமை இன்றைய வணிக உலகில் நடக்கும்போது இப்பேர்ப்பட்ட மேதையை யாராவது உண்மையாக மதிப்பார்களா என்ன?

ஆக மொத்தம் ஒரே வரவு என்னவென்றால், Budapest Symphony Orchestra வந்து தமிழ்நாட்டில் நிகழ்ச்சி நடந்தது என்பது தான்.

He took part basically because it suited his business / personal interests - definitely has nothing to do with ANY APPRECIATION OF IR at all, IMVHO!

1. Sun TV - he is calculating that they may get more political mileage in the coming elections & so more influential with public in general.

2. His albums are so dull in recent times / not hit at all despite being part of big stars, hit movies etc. unlike his 90's, so he needs big names in field (aka powers) to support him in this critical hour.

3. His mother (or some other close relative) is unwell and he wanted to be home / not traveling, as per news reports. He doesn't have any such soft feeling / personal thingy towards IR.

4. This series of events had backing by TF producer gumbal - who possibly arm-twisted him to ensure smooth progress of some forthcoming projects.

பல ஆண்டுகளாக ராசாவைக்குறித்து ஒரு நல்ல கருத்தும் சொல்லாத ஒரு ஆள் (இப்போதும் பெருசா ஒன்னும் சொல்லல - ஹெட்மாஸ்டர், தண்ணி அடிக்க மாட்டார், போதை கிடையாது வகையறா தான் - இசை குறித்த மதிப்பொன்றும் இல்லை) - திடீர்ன்னு ராசா புகழ் பாடி ஆவார் என்றெல்லாம் நான் நம்புவதில்லை!

To understand my above post in context, please compare the appreciation IR had for MSV.

I don't need to elaborate but consider the time period of 1985-86 when IR did MTK with MSV.

Very well articulated 

Director sabha episode had great nuggets.  IR sharing a story of him doing the impossible, like Hanumaar lifting the malai literally.  Three films simultaneous re-recording only Raja fossible.  It was nice that he followed it up with a story of his difficulties in the early years so that we can remember he was human long back at some point. While assembling heroines, directors, actors might have more mass appeal (which is also necessary end of the day for a TV channel to make some money off the telecast), I would love to have a session where musicians who truly appreciate and admire IR like Prasanna gather and chat with him.  Of course it is tough to find musicians of his wavelength but it would still be a very interesting conversation.  The Podhigai one where Prabhakar, Embar Kannan etc sat and discussed with him was also brilliant for eg.

I have expressed this sentiment before too but I will repeat it.  After being exposed to many underrated and unsung artists over the years, I have honestly stopped caring about how much appreciation IR gets but he has got a LOT.  Honestly if ARR didn't get Slumdog Oscar, how much would we care anyway about whether IR wins the approval of Amreeka.  What do they know anyway about Indian music and why does their opinion matter?  The fact that after all these years they chose Slumdog of all films to give award and spurned Shekar Kapoor and MNS (NOT to be confused with the political party!) who made great films true to the Western idiom itself speaks volumes about what they think of India and how they view it - only as a large market ripe for cultural appropriation and nothing more. OK if somebody like Robert Fripp said he thought IR was an amazing musician that would be a much bigger deal for me but the chances of that happening are very remote anyway (but my point is I don't care what the Western establishment thinks about IR).  To sort of paraphrase and read between the lines from what IR himself said in the felicitation prog for ARR, yedho avanukku kedaicha awarda film music ke oru awarda yethethundu ponnam, ambdudhen.  But without composer what will award do.

OK, until a couple of years back whenever I passed Fox theater and the home of Detroit Symphony Orchestra in downtown Detroit etc. I used to often think that "why not use some of my connections - especially some musician friends / African American bigwigs who have TV connections for e.g. - to familiarize the "motown who's who" with IR / his capabilities / copies of great music by him etc"...

However, immediately the thought of the KR's and other fellows around the maestro will come to mind and the possible "inaccessible" nature of TF personalities, including IR, that of me being never able to connect any Detroit-ers with IR and his team, i.e. me being a non-entity- will hit my ever-realistic mind...throwing all my enthu from 100 to 0 in a second...

Well, now I'm slowly getting out of Detroit / Ford / all connections...future will tell if at all I can be of any use, even being in NA, for IR's connection / recognition with some great musicians of current...

Oh wow you know black people working in TV industry, that's serious connections.

You have given me an idea, speaking of.  I sometimes leave comments on the facebook page of the British singer Annie Haslam who now lives in Pennsylvania.  She once mentioned she loves Indian music.  I didn't ask her then which Indian music.  I should have.  If she ever mentions Indian music again, I will find a way to do a maestro plug in.  Forget about Karthik Raja etc.  IF she says something like who is this amazing guy, adhuve porum.

Took part in the Maestro's Music app's Interaction with fan live programme with App Jockey Jayachandran and the programme is available on the App now.
It was enjoyable to chat with Mr. Jayachandran who is such a hardcore fan and shares interesting tidbits and nuances of the song and orchestration instantly. Only issue was restricting our life-long experiences within 5 songs.

The first thing that strikes you when you hear the song is the string section and what a pleasure it is to see high quality Hungarian musicians perform that for you. Chithra chechi also has done a great job reproducing the genius of Suseela amma. Overall well spent time

அவருடைய அன்பற்ற, கண்டிப்பான அக்குரலால் ரோகிணியும் ஷங்கரும் பார்வையாளர்களும் சற்றே தடுமாறிப் போயினர். “தெய்வமே... பேசாதே தெய்வமே...” என்று இளையராஜாவின் அன்பர்கள் தத்தம் மனத்துக்குள் வேண்டியதும் உண்மைதான். ஆனால் அங்கே கிளம்பிய அந்த இளஞ்சூட்டை இயக்குநர் ஷங்கர் கையாண்ட விதம் மிகவும் முதிர்ச்சியானது. “அப்படி ஒரு படம் வரவேண்டியது...” என்று நினைவுகூர்ந்தவர் அவரை உயரத்தில் வைத்து இன்னும் அண்ணாந்து பார்த்துக்கொண்டிருக்கிறோம் என்று ஓரளவு நிலைமையை இயல்பாக்கினார்.
வழக்கம்போல் இந்நிகழ்வு இளைராஜாவின் கடுஞ்சொல் இயல்புக்கு எடுத்துக்காட்டாகப் பார்க்கப்பட்டால் அது ஒருதரப்பானது என்றே கூறுவேன்.
எண்ணிப் பார்த்தால், இளையராஜாவின் குறுக்கீடு ஒரு படைப்பாளியின் தன்மானத்தோடும் படைப்புச் செருக்கோடும் தொடர்புடையது என்றே தோன்றுகிறது.
அப்போது மேடையில் இருந்தவர்களில் இளையராஜாவே அனைவர்க்கும் மூத்தவர். தொழிற்கலைஞராகவும் அவர் நாற்பத்தைந்தாண்டுகள் தாண்டியவர்.
‘இராகவனே இரமணா இரகுநாதா...” என்ற பாடலை ரோகிணி முதன்முதலாக இளமைக்காலங்கள் படத்தில் பாடுவதுபோல் நடித்தபோது இளையராஜா திரையுலகின் முன்னணி இசையமைப்பாளராகக் கொடிகட்டிப் பறக்கிறார். இளமைக்காலங்கள் எண்பத்து மூன்றாம் ஆண்டில் வெளியானது.
அப்போது ஷங்கர் திரைத்துறைக்குள் நுழைந்தே இருக்கமாட்டார். தொடக்கத்திலிருந்தே அவர் எஸ். ஏ. சந்திரசேகர் இயக்கிய படங்களில் பணியாற்றியவர். சந்திரசேகர் எண்பதுகளின் இறுதிவரை எம். எஸ். விசுவநாதனின் இசையிலேயே படமெடுத்தவர். அவருடைய 
‘வசந்தராகம்’ படப்பாடல்களை யாரும் மறந்திருக்க மாட்டார்கள். அதனால் தொடக்கந்தொட்டு இளையராஜாவுக்கு எதிர்முனையில் பணியாற்றிய இயக்குநர்களோடுதான் ஷங்கரின் நட்பு வட்டம் தோன்றியிருக்கும்.
பிற்காலத்தில் எஸ். ஏ. சந்திரசேகர் இளையராஜாவின் இசைக்கென்றே ‘இன்னிசை மழை’ என்ற பெயரில் பாடற்படம் ஒன்று எடுத்தார். அது தேறவில்லை என்றாலும் பாடல்கள் தேமாங்கனிகளாயும் தேன்சுளைகளாயும் அமைந்தன.
சந்திரசேகரிடமிருந்து வெளியேறிய அவருடைய மூத்த உதவியாளர் பவித்ரன் என்பவர். பவித்ரனின் முதன்மை உதவியாளராய் ஆனவர் ஷங்கர்.
பவித்ரன் தம் படங்களுக்கு இசையமைக்க யாரை நாடினார் என்றால் இளையராஜாவைப்போலவே இசையமைக்க முயன்ற தேவாவை. வசந்த காலப் பறவை, சூரியன், இந்து போன்ற படங்கள் பவித்ரனின் இயக்கத்தில் ஷங்கரின் இணை இயக்கத்தில் தேவாவின் இசையில் வெளிவந்தவை.
“வசந்தகாலப் பறவை” என்ற சிறு முதலீட்டுப் படம் வெளியானபோது இளையராஜா எங்கே இருந்தார் ? கேப்டன் பிரபாகரன், தளபதி போன்ற பெரும்படங்களில் பணியாற்றி ஒட்டுமொத்தத் திரையுலகையே தம் பதிவுக்கூடத்திற்கு வரவழைத்தபடி இருந்தார்.
ஷங்கர் தம் முதற்படமான ஜென்டில்மேனை எடுக்கும் வாய்ப்பினைப் பெறுகையில் இளையராஜா எங்கோ தொடமுடியாத கொடுமுடியில் இருக்கிறார். பிறகு ஜென்டில்மேன், காதலன், இந்தியன் என்று ஷங்கரின் பயணம் தொடங்குகிறது.
அதற்குப் பிந்திய ஆண்டுகளில் ஷங்கரின் படங்கள் வெற்றி பெறுகின்றன. படங்கள் குறைந்த நிலையிலும் இளையராஜாவின் புகழ் கூடிக்கொண்டே போகிறது. அவருடைய பாடல்கள் அனைத்தும் தொடர்ந்து ஒலிக்கின்றன. ஷங்கரின் ஜென்டில்மேன் படப்பாடல்கள் தற்போது எங்கேனும் ஒலிக்க நான் கேட்கவில்லை.
இவ்வளவு பெரிய வரலாற்றுப் பின்னணியில் மேடையில் நிற்கின்ற ஓர் இசையமைப்பாளரிடம் “நீங்கள் இருவரும் எப்போது இணையப் போகிறீர்கள் ?” என்று கேட்டது நமக்கு இயல்பாகத் தெரியலாம். இளையராஜாவுக்கு வெடுக்கென்று மனநிலை மாறியதில் வியப்பில்லை.
இளையராஜாவை உயரத்தில் இருத்திப் பார்த்த இளமையை உடையவர் ஷங்கர். அவர்க்கு உடனே தம் பழைமை நினைவுக்கு வந்ததால் அவர் நிலைமையை இயல்பாக்கினார்.
தோழர் ரோகிணியின் கேள்வி புதிய தலைமுறையினர் மனத்திலிருந்த ஒன்றுதான். அது அவருடைய கேள்வியாக இருக்கவும் வாய்ப்பில்லை. நிகழ்ச்சித் தொகுப்பு அமைப்பில் அந்தக் கேள்வியைக் கேட்கும்படி அவர்க்குக் கொடுக்கப்பட்டிருக்கும். ’நிகழ்ச்சி எழுத்தாளர்களின்’ குழறுபடிகள் இவை.
அங்கே யாரும் தவறவில்லை. ஒரு தடுமாற்றம். அவரவர் நிலையிலும் கடமையிலும் அங்கே தம்மை வெளிப்படுத்தினர்.
என்ன செய்வது ? புகழும் இகழும் பேறும் இழப்பும் கலையுலகத்தின் இயல்புகள். அவை எங்கு வேண்டுமானாலும் யார் வாயாலும் எத்தகைய நடத்தையாலும் எந்நேரத்திலும் வெளிப்பட்டுவிடும்.

I thought what IR did was admirable.  The way I perceived it was that he did not want Shankar to be embarrassed on the stage - perfect was IR's statement that directors should work with whoever they are comfortable with.  I did not see it as IR's ego being hurt but more so that he was acting as a statesman that people have come to honor him and they should not be embarassed.  With regard to Rohini, going back to the show with the actresses, IR commented that he had known Rohini from she was a little girl and it showed him taking that liberty.  In fact, Ir seemed to be in a pretty good mood throughout the show.

Yes, that is true. IR's only fault is that he does not know how to say things diplomatically. But then that is the fault of many straightforward geniuses.

I wonder why the Malaysia, Sydney concerts have not been uploaded yet.  Perth concert is also joining that mystery list.  I am yearning to see Chitra sing "Sangeethame en deivame" after seeing her rehearsing (Madhura Sudha channel) for that rare, wonderful and National-award-worthy song sung by SJ.

Not strictly related to Raja.  But at 12:00, BR brings up one of his favourite observations about MSV (vis a vis Raja).  That MSV pallavis have a different tune for each line (while Raja tends to repeat).  He then goes on to say that gives you MORE melody for the acreage.



In a very pedantic sense, that is correct, of course.  But does that really take into account why a composer decides to go about with one approach rather than the other?  I have no doubt IR could compose a different tune for each line of melody in the pallavi if he wanted to.  In fact, he did that in some songs just recalling off hand.  Ore Naal Unnai Naan, Un Paarvayil and also Radha Radha Nee Enge.  But just looking at the ones where he did not, do the pallavis have less melody per se only because they repeat lines? Take Ivaloru Ilanguruvi.  It has pretty long phrases with lots of notes and follows many steps to get to the conclusion.  So isn't repeating the line just a way to build momentum (rather than a covering up for inability to write evolved melody)?  I am not saying BR said it's the latter but it CAN be exploited by haters, again, to twist it that way.  Staccato and accentuation are very important in IR's music in general and much less so in MSV's.  Therefore, by repeating lines and emphasising the accents, IR builds the groove.

nanjilaan, thanks a lot for sharing the awesome audio of "Darling Darling Darling" song from the Singapore concert. Chitra has indeed done P.Susheela proud with her impeccable, sincere rendition. About the orchestra, I was under the impression that Raja was over hyping the Hungary crew.Thought he had some unknown grudge against the local talent. After hearing them play the rich, complicated interludes of this number, I can understand why IR goes all out for them despite logistic overhead.
