Honestly, I didn't miss SPB in Toronto show at all - actually, besides BSO, the whole bunch of singers were mostly good in that show!

Mano is adequate nowadays (especially considering SPB's FB-stabbing!) and KSC is always a great performer!

Like me, I wish all the IRF's completely stop this "miss-SPB" nonsense!

If we want SPB, we can always listen to CD's. That person's presence could spoil the taste - i.e. because of his open-media-stabbing of IR, which even some vile opponents never did! He is almost in the range of BR / GA / VM on that account!

Firstly, the goodies....

1. Glad to see a singer being able to analyze Raja's music a bit
   
2. As he has really not sung for Raja, this is not bad to begin with. He is honest that he didn't know much about Raja till he got into the industry
   

Next, the bummers...

1. Between BR and him, they try to play the Raja 80s nostalgia card and that falls totally short for me. Grow up Sid. Listen to some music after 1986. Raja is still composing music, FYI
   
2. As a major in music and having learned CCM and western harmony, could you not say a little deeper into Raja harmony? For the general public, stuff like motifs and handling of inflections can sound 'intellectual', but that is BR stuff - I thought you are better than BR :-(
   
3. As a Carnatic singer, (I am on record stating that I cant stand his CCM for more than 5 min. Stand up to Prasanna, who does a fantastic job) at least he could have brought up some Carnatic nuances that Raja has used that nobody has surfaced
   
4. Stop BS -ing about Raja's orchestration. If you really understand it, state a few insights on his orchestration or else, stop that stereotype
   
5. For heavens sake, please do not talk about Raja's BGM having not watched his movies
   

Sorry to come back with a rant. I couldn't help it...

I think the fact that he started discovering Raaja only in the last 5 years is the reason for most of the bummers here. Given Raaja's huge repertoire, it will take years for him to discover, uncover, process, internalize and reach that state of enlightenment especially on Raaja's less popular songs, carnatic songs, WCM songs etc. Honestly, I was not expecting him to talk all that. My reaction was, like your's, "not bad to begin with". And he seems to have got one core element of Raaja's music even by mere scratching the surface - "The music is so precise and deliberate... so much that it cannot be perfected anymore and it must not be tampered with". That is something most of the fans agree too. I like the fact that he reached to that perspective fairly quickly (for someone coming from a totally different background, different influences, preferences, culture etc.).

And regarding that BGM - my guess is that he is referring to interludes (lot of industry people still refer to them as 1st BGM, 2nd BGM and so on) and not actual BGM of the movie.

I think above and beyond the time it takes to internalise IR's music, it may also be that he is one of those fans who likes IR as an old school/old music composer and relates to his melody.  I am not sure that (a) he likes subversive music per se and, ergo, (b) likes IR's more subversive stuff.  Even if you get into IR's music late, it's pretty hard to MISS the Agni or Ninaivellam Nithya soundtracks.  I am guessing he doesn't like it so much, at least yet.  And just forget about the jagged stuff like Uravenum Pudhiya Vaanil. He's grown up in the US through and through and he probably relates to a more lush, polished and expansive style of production.  Unless he is a rock head in which case Neethane/Pani Vizhum Malarvanam would have been the ones he would have singled out rather than Thenpandi/Kanne Kalaimane for the nth time.  HOWEVER, I don't MIND naming IR's 80s stuff per se.  Those ARE his essentials and I don't know why IR fans would resist that so much.  It doesn't mean he didn't do any good work in the later decades but it was his most prolific phase, the period when he was the commercial king and worked on the vast majority of A list projects made in the entire Tamil film industry in that decade.  It is difficult imo to pick songs NOT from the 80s unless you are approaching it with a specific mandate to highlight non 80s songs to people (which would be great but is not anybody's obligation, not Sid's, not BR's).

No discussion on the already much hyped IR-ARR meeting?  Thought the interaction was great, loved how engaged and pleased Rahman seemed to be when he was playing the Punnagai Mannan theme, he was clearly enjoying it.  Wondering what else they said to/about each other or was this all. It's come full circle; as IR and one of his closest collaborators have parted ways, so too he has had a sort of ice breaker after all these years with Rahman.  So glad this could happen.

Do you mean in a "musical" sense? Or, are you talking about the "years" between ARR's oscar stage (where IR praised him) and this...

Musical sense only.  It was wonderful to hear Rahman play and he played quite beautifully.

That was just banter.  All three - Suhasini, IR and ARR - were creating a 'scene' and playing along.  Suhasini laughingly told IR neenga avar vaasikardha correct pannannum. IR also lived up to it by correcting ARR. As a musician he well knows you cannot expect someone, even ARR, to play someone else's composition exactly as the original impromptu.  He wasn't serious about correcting him at all; he was laughing and so was ARR.  I am sorry a light hearted interaction - which is why I called it ice breaker - didn't go down well with some of you.  Guess the two of them are more large hearted than the fans, is all I can say. Oh, it goes both ways by the way.  When IR was asked about ARR's Padmabhushan, he said why should I feel happy about someone else's award.  You never say something like that in public.  Sometimes IR needs to lose his mathematical logic and just say the acceptable thing.  Just a cursory congrats to Rahman, no big deal, after all the media had asked IR first and foremost about his own award, not Rahman's.

I understand and justice was done eventually, albeit for so called Dalit outreach which made it like neeye awarda vacchuko, but it was poor form on his part to vent it.  You never confirm those feelings in public, just keep it respectful.  Anyhow, what is done is done.  As I said, I am happy they put whatever baggage it was aside at least for the evening and interacted freely.

I watched the Sun TV program last Sunday where Raja spent an hour with the heroines of 80s. One particular incident caught my attention. One of the actresses mentioned that the lines, 'Methai vaanginanen thookatha vaangalai' makes her cry every time she hears it. Somehow Raja held himself together. I remember him criticizing Diamond for writing such stupid lines...

app and usha..just watched the link. the crowd emotion shows for which songs they got excited and for other songs they look sad. they got excited when raja prelude starts. i think spb realizes his mistakes (i saw one interview in last year where he praises raja). lets see in future if he shows up for raja concerts. when ARR cancelled his foreign tour and joined , spb could have arranged his live in london by week later so that might have resolved all heart burns for him. as far his voice..yes..something is missing he looks tired and sad. that jovial funny spb making crowd laugh is totally missing. also noted the female singers were worth to hear. not that spb lost his voice but i can hear something is lacking ! i would doubt with raja songs here and there not sure if crowd would turn out? anyways his FB ranting and trying to play victim game costed him

Have been reading reviews of IR 75 function and also saw the SunTV programmes the two weekend programmes with actresses and film-producers. naan paarthadhilirundhum padiththadhilirundhum enna thOndrugiradhu endral, Ilaiyaraaja'vukku avarukku kidaikka vendiya recognition innum kidaikkavillai endrE thOndrugiradhu. avarai pugazhndhu pEsubavargaL EdhAvadhu oru tharuvayil ARR'aiyum adhE aLavukku pugazhgiraargaL. idhil enakku udan paadu illai. Not saying that ARR is bad, but merely stating that they're not at the same level. IR is so far ahead that he is almost unreachable. oru upamaanam solla vEndum endral, IR is a star and ARR is the Sun (merely from a distance perspective. idhil romba yosikka vendaam )!

Anyways, I hope IR gets global recognition. TN-level recognition kaNdippaaga pOraadhu. Curious to know the views of some of the regular hubbers.
