Manadhil oru paattu - Song of the moment - Vol 2

I've been reading thirukkuRaL #999 today and was trying to understand.

The basic thought in it goes like, "If someone isn't nice to others and thus lacking friends, he will feel dark even in broad daylight" - indicating the gloominess / darkness in life in general for unfriendly people.

Due to my strong brain-wiring to TFM, the phrase "பகலும் பாற்பட்டன்று இருள்" called to memory that movie title "பகலில் ஒரு இரவு"

That way, instead of writing my brief commentary on that thirukkuRaL, I'm listening to one of the sweetest evergreen albums of IR

Listened to all the songs of iLamaikkOlam after a long time thanks to #MaestroApp hosting it today as AOTD!

Of course all the songs are favorites right from the time of its arrival, thanks to radio! It was one among the albums that pushed the likes of me to pay more attention to the interludes in songs (sometimes more than the main melody or the vocal portions even)!

IR must have had special love for this movie as he did a lot of work on EACH AND EVERY interlude of all the four songs!

Very special album! (Of course, the melodies and other background arrangements are superb as well - but the interludes are the cream here IMHO!)

iLamaikOlam - Thanks a lot app sir for unearthing this forgotten gem of an album. Used to be my childhood fav album. When KJY started the AlAp in Hindolam for "Sridevi", I got such a gooseflesh experience.  But IMO, the dark horse of the album is the peppy Gowri Manohari flavoured  "KaNNan naaLum",. Well, this is S.J's home ground and she performs with a great elan.

One of those many MP3 disks grabbed from India road trip has this fantastic number (categorized under "Mohan hits" yuck).

I missed mentioning there how much awesome this song is musically

Pretty much in the same "mould" as ninaivellAm nithyA's NEPV song (I mean the guitar works, the awesome second interlude etc). Right from the prelude, it's celebration time for guitar!

It's possible IR got charged up when someone told him "we're signing you up for the chattakkAri / Julie remake and you need to give us songs better than songs of those movies"

It would be great if someone musically-technical (such as Sureshji , Ravi Natarajan, crimson king) write a comparison of the three songs composed for the same situation. IR of course had a small advantage of having a couple of "references" and IMHO opportunity to come up with something superior. However, such a comparative analysis is impossible for me

Saw a news item today on IR, that talked about someone making a new version of an IR song :

The piece, which is a different version of the evergreen hit song ‘Tharapadam Chedoharam’ composed by music maestro Ilayaraja is an experimental project, according to the vocalist. Also called an Acappella version, such a concept has not been tried in the Malayalam music industry. We have also introduced another concept of key change in this version, which is a sudden pitch change.”

When I saw that portion, எந்தப்பாட்டு என்று சட்டென்று நினைவுக்கு வரவில்லை...I got intrigued and wanted to check out what song is that!

Then when I listened to the song on youtube, I was surprised " அட இந்தப்பாட்டு ராசாவோடதா? எத்தனை வாட்டி பாலக்காட்டில் அங்கங்கே கேட்டிருக்கிறேன், அப்போதெல்லாம் தோணவே இல்லையே".

Also, while the female singer is easily identified (KSC), I was wondering who could this male singer be - who sounds exactly like SPB! (I was so arrogantly sure that SPB hadn't sung any MFM duet under IR).

Sureshji is surprised that I'm not aware of this song

That's because there was a discussion in mayyam.com and I didn't connect the reference to the actual song - my big miss at that time. Fortunately, I caught the song / IR-SPB connection yesterday

Plum says in twitter that the mayyam url is blocked for him. (I've also heard sometime back that mayyam no longer works for people in India - that's really bad).

thArapadham is the only song in that movie, I think, and the movie itself, with the tinge of sadness running through, despite there being no hint of the impending tragedies until the actual tragedy happens, which is well into three quarters of the movie. Oh I forgot to add that the discussion is relevant in the sense that thArapadham, the song itself is a romantic ditty that carries that underlying sense of poignancy. I think the way Raja understands a director and a movie, it is unparalleled. It is not about giving apt BGM. It is about the instinctive understanding of what the director's vision is, and the ability to communicate it even when the director fails to translate his vision into execution.

The Devar films / elephant / Rajinikanth song was playing in the vaNdi this morning (and I later searched for the song in youtube, funny to watch - with the director comparing elephant's pinnazhagu with that of Sripriya & a similar Kamalahasan song as well).

Both songs get the same "guitar theme" for the elephant (besides the trumpet sound imitating elephant trumpeting!

Nanna Jeeva Neenu from Shankar Nag's Kannada movie "Geetha" - the same movie which has a string of other hits including the ever-popular Jotheyali which the Kannadigas are crazy about, even this day.  This is the original tune on which the Tamil song "Devan thandha veenai" was based on. But somehow, Maestro manages to capture the nativity of the soil effortlessly and changes the emotions of the song albeit the same tune.  SPB & SJ pour in a torrent of emotions (nothing new for them!).  And Maestro brings in a haunting feeling and an undying soul (nothing new for him either!) no matter when you listen to it.
