SPB's "pre-IR" TFM songs / status - only 191 could be found!

We should request Saravanan sir to host in a new blog or somewhere some of those dhool treasures that are no longer accessible.

Like, the V Kumar series

The initial set of articles are intact in tfmpage and can be easily accessed. OTOH, the later part that came in dhool is now inaccessible (possibly gone).

Well, today's song must be in that "no-longer-viewable" portion, being from a 1973 VK movie called "peNNai nambungaL". (There are at least 2 SPB songs and may be more, unfortunately no other web resource gives all the required info. The movie titles could not be located on the web).

Anyways, going thru a variety of web pages, I feel the following information is correct :

OK kind of song - I like the percussion arrangement for the pallavi. Nice melody too but SPB has no extra-value-add in this number. Also, my not-so-fav duet combo

Per the T Soundar article the song is supposedly based on mAyA mALava gowLai, the primary-training-rAgA (sarigamapathanisa-sanithapamagarisa thingy).

Per some dinathanthi article, the still from a song sequence of this "peNNai nambungaL" movie messed up the bride search for Sivamaindhar by his parents, when appeared on a periodical. 

The parents were allegedly shown the still from the newspaper (by the girl's family) and had to make an embarrassing exit from the peN pArkkum padalam

Well, other than messing up that session, this apparently did nothing else to TN or Sivakumar. Such an ordinary number (despite SPB trying his laughter tricks etc).

A rare song which has both IR & ARR names in the first pallavi line

Some will probably get a kick out of it, for the 70's comedy reminders - though I don't know any background about this song at all.

First time listen for me and it is not widely available on the net. No youtube obviously but many web pages refer this song in their SPB lists or 70's lists and that's how I came to know of the existence.

It is possibly MRR Vasu who speaks a couple of lines in-between, in his father's voice (or may be MRR himself, can't say).

Looks like there's one more song with a similar "comedy" gumbal that possibly had SPB - but cannot be confirmed yet, from the movie "kAsi yAththirai".

I've tweeted asking for help and we may possibly get an answer on that 'AnjanEya' song if it really has SPB (based on movie titles / vinyl cover etc)... until then, I'm keeping the song in the "parking lot"

OK, let us pick a 1974 song that is quite related (somewhat) to current news items

SPB-JJ song with Jaishankar-JJ on screen, for a film called "vairam"
(OK, some connection to the assets case - judgement etc)

It's possible I've heard this song before on radio but don't remember clearly. There's nothing special in the song, resembles some of those 60's-70's indhi songs. T R Pappa is the MD and kavingar has some kiLukiLu pAdal varigaL to add to them.

This song is quite an interesting catch (and I can pat myself for being alert)

Here are the odds against hitting this number :

a) Not part of the original thEnrAjA tfmpage list
b) Never heard before myself
c) The movie is kind of obscure (rOshakkAri) and even if one finds in the 1974 list, web searches typically throw a Vijayashanthi telugu dubbing movie with the same name (Rajkamal that too  )

Now the biggest one - THE MOVIE TITLES DO NOT HAVE SPB's NAME LISTED!

Against all odds, I got this song simply because I chose to listen to it

Also, the song itself is quite melodious and OK (by the famous MSV-Kavingar combo)

Kavingar has Rama.Kannappan listed as his assistant in the titles and MSV has his usual Joseph Krishna as asst.

This one was a hit song - I would say "patti-thotti" hit as I've heard even on kOlAmbi speakers those days, as much as MGR-Sivaji songs!

Surprisingly, it was from a Srikanth film with no big stars or anything of that sort.

V Kumar music with Vaali lines had reached majority of TN public at that time, possibly because the "inter-faith-love" business was a hot topic of 60's-70's. 

PS sings really sweet in this number and SPB gives nice support and the song has a decent melody. One can definitely listen to this once or twice

However, this wasn't one of my favorites those days (and even now I don't warm up to it much...just an average number IMHO ; only manappiRazhvu cases can call this as "hEy, we've done before" to what rAsA did for kAdhal Oviyam pAdum kAviyam  ).

It was perhaps songs of Vijayabhaskar that started establishing SPB's voice with unique identity, keeping them away for any hero-related distinction early in the 70's. This is definitely one such song that impressed me those days and I didn't even know who the actor was. (Only now I come to know that Jai Shankar was on screen).

Nice song and SPB definitely has begun stamping his speciality here  (Of course aided by some wicked lines by Vaalibar)

There is another SPB song from the same Jaishankar movie - this one with VJ & kuzhuvinar, that resembles many indhi songs of that time period.

However, I'll have to also inform that this song got featured regularly in AIR those days. That way, the song was quite known to radio-listeners of 70's ; just that I used to get irritated each time this got played. Especially when SPB sings "poochchANdi pidippAn" in a chava-chava manner.

This song was a big radio hit.

Not just that, it is well-known to people even decades later. Makes me think that the first better duet partners for SPB happened to be VJ (in TFM) IMHO. Of course, SJ hit it big later on after IR's arrival. However, prior to that - with the exception of thEn sindhudhE vAnam and may be another one or two - she didn't get featured much in TFM.

OTOH, PS & LRE did a lot of songs with SPB - sadly not the best matches for him IMHO.

That way, the first duet partner to match well and gave hit after hit (i.e. on radio only) was perhaps VJ.

And this one was a top number.

What's more, I've even seen this movie in theater   I still remember reading about somnambulism etc with much interest after watching this movie when I was possibly not even 10 years old

First of all, the very first line is kuppai - how can any idiot "forget" playing around in the lap of a woman

In any case, early 70's had seen all kinds of crazy things in the TF field. Even the name of the movie is so asattuththanam - aththaiyA mAmiyA - asadO asadu business.

Here it is - LRE sounds like either aththai or mAmi to SPB in this song

After listening to that horror by LRE, even Swarna sounds much better

This is a SPB-leading number where a relatively younger & subdued singer sounds better with him than the dominating LRE kinds. 

However, Swarna sings KaNNa as Kanna often and that is quite irritating. Her hubby too didn't seem to bother / correct. I'm not 100% sure about the lyricist of this number. Neither the titles nor vinyl cover could not be located on the web by my searches. This KD thing is based on some website claims and sure they cannot be reliable. (As suspected, it wasn't correct and corrected the credits to Vaalibar)

This is an OK kind of song with VK following the popular "indhi music sounds" of that time period. The saraNam melody, especially the ending portion is quite sweet and that makes the song OK overall

Sivakumar / Jayachithra seemed to have paired quite a bit those days...

People often comment that despite proving himself with super hit songs, why V Kumar had never been given due credits.

Often people credit his hit songs to MSV (me included, thought kAdhodu dhAn nAn pEsuvEn as MSV number until I realized otherwise in tfmpage in late 90's ).

While the prior number tried to follow some popular 70's indhi patterns, this one took one back to the MSV-TKR kind of sounds from the 'Bheemsingh- pA varisai kind of movies'.

Severly limited composer, this VK. He had his share of hits, made nice melodies, partnered for some hit movies etc. However, never had ANYTHING UNIQUE of his own, IMHO.

Which is why his identity got lost among the general public. OTOH, despite not being very original, even the S-G due had some visibility thanks to having a different soundscape, arrangements etc. Though they were heavily borrowing from indhi, including direct lift of many melodies, often they stayed away from the boring arrangements that MSV's assistants  could come up with in the 70's. OTOH, fellows like VK, Vijayabaskar, T R Pappa and such pretty much didn't have any differentiation and thus never built an identity in TFM

So, V Kumar not getting enough public recognition is his own doing. (How to shift the paradigm was so clearly demonstrated later in 1976...)

BTW, even KVM - despite horrible arrangements / interludes etc with his trusted Pugazhendhi - managed to keep it "unique". ayyO pAvam, VK wasn't capable of EVEN that

MSV-Kavingar combo and SPB is very sweet here - lovely melody with Waltz and some decent arrangements and nice interludes.

The only dhrishti is LRE
(kodumai coarse voice and she sings bombastic as usual - MSV madness in picking her for such songs  )

The song lists a few rAgAs and connects them to the attributes of the heroini (Pramila in this case, who gets this loads of appreication from Muthuraman). Some of the rAgams listed are Anandha bhairavi, mOhanam, malaiyamArudham, chAramathi, sarasAngi, saraswathi, hamsadhwani, neelAmbari, dEvamanOhari, Arabi, vasanthA, ranjani...however, I don't think those phrases are actually sung / mapped into the swara pattern of the actual rAgA...(knowledgeable folks can confirm this, to my untrained ears there is no rAgA change that is happening and thus I took the liberty to say those are not actually the rAgams being sung).

In any case, other than that, nothing novel about the song. The same dull / boring orch by MSV troup. (The third interlude is sumAr while others are paridhAbam). The melody itself is sweet but SPB's voice does not sound nice in this song. (Some problem or did he try to imitate some of his predecessors?)

Like I mentioned above, a first-time-listen for me. That way, this was possibly a rarity on radio.

Another SPB song for Jaishankar from this 1974, which also had decent radio time, was from the movie "ungaL viruppam". (The name is much like BM's neengaL kEttavai of 80's, that featured name of radio program for TFM).

VJ was the duet companion with Shankar Ganesh working with Kavingar for this number.
