Made a mistake in the last post (MDs for ungaL viruppam were S-G and not VB) which I've corrected today.

It has another SPB-VJ duet for the same pair on-screen and this one too had some air time those days.

app, I had also missed the "ThOdi" raga . Just noticed during the 3rd listen.

I also forgot to list the Ananda Bhairavi, Malayamarutham , DevaManohari and Arabi.


For the raga name and the actual raga correlating them, the best
example would be "vendriduvEn indha nAttaiyum nAdhathaal" from "Agastiar".
That line is set to "nAttai" raga and the line following it,
'andha Bhairavi thunaivan pAdham panindhu unnai" , in Bhairavi raga.
A perfect ragamalika with very interesting raga word play too.

Definitely a very rare song - me hearing for the first time

Not a great one and never heard on radio. I remember hearing the 'kadavuL mAmA vandhAru' song on radio from the same movie on a few occasions. But never this one. 

LRE is nArAsaththin uchcham. SPB is not that great either and both cannot help much for a lacklusture melody combined with equally unimpressive orch and pAdal varigaL. A loser song in every possible way.

Definitely forgettable!

Some obscure fun song with electric guitar prelude from the "coconut" movie kaliyugakkaNNan.

I'm not very sure about the female voice but it does sound somewhat like LRE.

SPB does his garjaNai etc and some englees words in this number supposedly written by Vaali & tuned by VK.

Never heard this before - first timer for me and I am not very thrilled about (expect the prelude and the bass backing that are neat).

Another rare song, however this sounds not so unfamiliar like the previous two posts - it is possible I've heard it once or twice before.

Or it is possible S-G took it from some indhi song that was very popular and was played to my ears a few times

The girl runs around and dances with a lot of energy while Srikanth mimics NT by not stretching too much

Also, the lyrics by kavingar are full of double meaning  Especially the last line

Trivia : The album has Ganesh (of S-G) singing the title song, kai niRaiyakkAsu, kai niRaiya nOttu, veLuththukkattu rAjA, vetRi nadai pOttu. I don't think he had sung very many songs, so that one must be a rare number!

This one from MSV-KD combo as well, for a Lakshmi - Muthuraman movie it seems. While the details of the movie and this song are not widely seen on the net, the song itself got mentioned in the tfmpage thread that we referred in the outset (the Thenraja one)

Interestingly, the youtube has vinyl cover and thus easy to authenticate the MD / Lyricist info

We're not done with 1974 yet  

There are at least a couple more from this less-known movie called 'thAippAsam'. Not to be confused with another with the same name that came out in 1988 with Chandrabose music starring Arjun / Roobini. This one is a Sivakumar-Sumithra starrer, after their successful "combination" in the famous KB movie arangEtRam. Unfortunately, as per one article, post arangEtRam, the TN public didn't warm up to a regular "family" role by Pramila and rejected this movie  (It seems she had to wait till thangappadhakkam or another movie years later, to play a "normal woman" role).

Well, that way, the director of this movie had to be appreciated for not trying to do stereotyping.

There is no internet way to establish the authenticity of credits for this song (except SPB of course) and I've placed question marks on MD / Lyricist for that reason. I'll be happy to get authentic info (and correct the information presented in this post, if needed).

First saraNam can be interpreted in two ways...

1. The 70's girls were so conservative that even for a kiss they demanded marriage (too naive an interpretation IMO as there were movies like arangEtRam from the same time period)

2. Boy must be asking for...வேண்டாம், இதோட நிறுத்திக்குவோம்

From 1975, we've already hosted some 14 songs (when the "hero" route was taken for compiling). nALai namadhE, idhayakkani, pAttum barathamum, mAlai sooda vA, pattikkAttu rAjA, thangaththilE vairam, pattAm poochchi, Ayiraththil oruththi, mEl nAttu marumagaL were the movies from which the songs got posted about.

To restart that year, we'll host a hit song by GKV next, with Ilayaraja officially credited as துணை இசை

As mentioned in my previous post (and the picture), GKV had LV & IR as assistants at this point of time, primarily doing Kannada movies. We've seen earlier that the song 'thEn sindhudhE vAnam' GKV-SPB-SJ was very famous (and became my favorite those days and continues to be even now). However, GKV was never a known force in TF / TFM and most people tend to credit this thennangeetRu song to Vijayabaskar on the web. (examples are that Thenraja collection on tfmpage & the song's youtube - both credit VB.)

Fortunately, the movie itself is available on youtube and thus there's no confusion as to who was the MD

A super hit song by the 70's standards! It was so popular that the first line became the title of another movie made years later. 

I've heard the song 100's of times those days on radio (needless to say it was a personal favorite).

Of course, at that time I knew that samsAram meant wife. Not as "family life" as per the context of this song.
(Of course, years later I came to learn Malayalam where the word meant altogether different  ) 

Most people / websites credit the lyricist as Kannadasan. However, I'm not 100% sure as the movie titles list both KD and PA as lyricists. Don't know who wrote which one (all songs were big hits from this movie / album). Interestingly, the movie titles even say there were two recording engineers, indicating who recorded which songs. Unfortunately, they never listed on titles who wrote what song  Not just for this movie but generally for any movie

On this thread, now we have two songs one after another with Sujatha on screen   A nice actress IMO (of course, the annakkiLi - IR's first movie heroine - thus earning a special place that way too). 

Now, that triggered in me some nostalgia w.r.t. school days and school campus. I think it is worth sharing here about a character who possibly played a role in shaping some of my musical taste those years.

It was our school clerk (whose wife was my 4th grade teacher and they lived in the campus like us). Very talented, unusually fluent in English for those days with a very good accent - in a village school, though he possibly didn't even complete his degree. He was originally from "town" and a church member having multiple talents. (Artist, musician, technician - helped with most lab projects of students - especially the sensor related ones, high-speed typist etc etc).

What is relevant here is his control over the school's music / PA system and all the disks they procured  Also, on most school functions what music got played, what got chosen for student cultural programs / dances etc. He practically decided most of those and thus impacted the music that people in that school campus listened to on most occasions (i.e. other than radio listening). All through the 70's, especially.

Personally, I used to visit his home and also check out his own music collections - thru out the seventies. He had awesome collection of popular indhi / western / instrumental disks and played them at home, besides tuning his radio to a variety of stations that played western. He was also an electronics technician and fixing the radios / systems of many other friends from "town" and one could get a chance to listen to music with a variety of systems - i.e. whenever he was around fixing them on weekends / holidays / evening and also in a good mood

Now, what is this connection between him and Sujatha? 

Well, he was so fond of her that he chose to name their 3rd child as Sujatha
(I'm not sure whether his wife was happy about it - as she was quite orthodox / serious church lady who generally shunned movies; even during school moral instruction classes she used to tell Jesus stories dramatically, with lot of emotions, to us - which itself is quite interesting, looking back. The village was primarily Muslim and so was the school management & the HM a pious Hindu but some of the teachers were church goers and who could freely teach about Jesus in MI classes if they wanted. I don't think such climate exists in that school today or in most schools nowadays).

Now, unfortunately for this family, that 3rd child died before it turned 3 (or may be 2, don't remember well) -chicken pox or similar contagious disease killed the beautiful little child!

Well, I should add a couple more "sOga" business to that clerk story

-In late 70's, he used his extra special talents to get a "waip" in town and started battering his wife frequently i.e. whenever she brought up his infidelity - eventually leading to their separation

-It was not before a few years and a lot of drama - including the teacher threatening to torch herself pouring kerosene one day (my parents did the rescue act)  and a number of fights between the couple  All campus children often had to witness their fights outside their home (once she came running to our home with him chasing her, my parents weren't there but only we children, he started beating her with a hard-sole shoe and me being the oldest -16 then I think - had to jump in-between them to stop the nonsense)

In their case, samsAram was rock guitar and drums (and not veeNai)

When the SOTD business that started in tfmpage and later continued in dhool.com reached a huge milestone - 1000 - the admin team chose to host a SPB song from 1975.

No need for me to add much on that song here, except stating that this was quite popular on radio and was very familiar to me. I liked the song - esp. the piano - though not at the same level as the previous two songs. To me SPB was just OK in this number and not as awesome as samsAram enbadhu or mANikka mAmaNi.

I don't know why - for some reason, I felt SPB did some extra "pongal" in this song (even those days when I was a school boy). 

Of course, it is not to "too much" levels but some mild over reaction, in my book - if you look at the pAdal varigaL, where there is no apparent need for the anguish I feel in SPB's tone

There's another song in the same movie that starts with a few "englees" phrases and then continues with multiple changes (including a mehboobA mehboobA resembling portion)...looks like a stage program where people do multiple acts.

There's another SPB song in this Muthuraman / Manjula movie, this one a duet with SJ.

Though a very ordinary song by design (padu sumAr dappAnguththu with lacklustre orch) the combo try their best to improve (SJ tries to do her famous siNungal, laughter, munagal etc - note, this was pre-IR period).

The end result is an average number that can be heard without skipping. The song was reasonably popular those days (and I can't clearly remember if I heard it on radio or kOlambi speakers...there's another song from this album which was quite popular in the country side, being featured in all kalyANam kAdhukuththu kind of functions those days - sevappukkallu mookkuththi sirikka vandha mAnkutti - a real patti-thotti hit then).

Anyways, there seems to be not many internet fellows who like this song and accordingly I could not locate any youtube.

This year seems to be the celebration of "smaller" composers with SPB (specifically, Vijayabhaskar & V Kumar had quite a few hits with him).

This song was quite popular and I've heard many times on radio and otherwise those days. Despite the "not-so-enjoyable-singing" by the pair (I feel there's even "off-pitch" during the "O-O-O" singing at the end of the saraNam by both  ), the song was / is a personal favourite...thanks to the nice melody and the sweet rhythm changes

Most people from that time period may fondly remember this song, though not knowing much about the movie...(I'll post a dhool link with the next song from this movie, where Saravanan sir himself could not remember much about the movie but could fondly recall the songs)...

The song sounds like a typical MSV-70's number (or even 80's number  ) - however, the song is credited to VB. Shows how it was / is so difficult in pre & post IR eras to differentiate the composers

For the first time in history, I find a possible error in a dhool post by Saravanan sir

The song 'ninaiththadhai mudippadhu' is listed in that article as a thottadhellAm ponnAgum number.

However, the song is from Ayiraththil oruththi, featuring Kamalahasan (and we've already hosted it earlier in this thread, as #38)

Even inbaminge includes that song in the thottadhellAm ponnAgum page - possibly it got included in this movie as well   However, there is no movie youtube and thus it cannot be authenticated.

Since the song is already hosted, we can move on to another movie tomorrow...
