+1 Excellent singing. She has grasped the soul of the song very well. I was keen how would she sing 'kaatril kuzhalOsai', as that is one of the highlight of the song, but she triumphed very well. What a lovely portion that is! Great find by Maestro!app_engine wrote:Excellent!

muthu maNi mAla - both singers do well! (Both Bengali people )
BTW, the girl nails that 'நீ தானே' variation in the second saraNam so nicely
She should sing this to PS and I'm sure ammA will give her a hug and kiss!

That's great news App. Nice to see ShreyaG singing again for IR. I bet it would be yet another gem of a song/composition like all her previous songs for IR.

Re: Raja's New Albums
She said Telugu and also confirmed that this is her next with Raaja after aavanithumbi.
So, no ShreyaG songs in Megha/Nilachoru. Also this song I guess will feature in that Anushka film.

Can't wait to hear, is it on amazon?V_S wrote:paattu eppadi irrukku?
BTW, based on the Bengali girl's singing sample, that 'kAlaiyil mAlai vandhadhu' has to be a fantastic one!
IMG, Both of those 'kallAlE senju' should be the same melody (effectively one song with two versions, so totally four melodies)!
GA's lyric is sung by rAsA - got to be rustic / folk / may be thathuvams...above average assured if not excellent!
Commenting even before listening...bad habit

Hope we get to hear Nilachoru album soon here in the US. GA writing lyrics for an IR album after a long time I guess, did they already patch up. If so, can't be more happier and wish more songs to come out of this association.

Re: Raja's New Albums
Still not out in amazon/iTunes and I am not very optimistic of listening to this album legally. Kaalaiyila and Nanri sollave are excellent. Have listened to the others only once and they are not very impressive so far.
Kaalaiyila maalai vanthathu
+ Veenai singing along in the pallavi
+ Veenai against the bass guitar in the 1st interlude
+ Saptaparna
+ Lead guitar in the 2nd interlude
Nanri solla vendum
+ The lovely lilting tune
+ Though synth laden, typical Raaja ludes
+ Karthik - Such a delight when he makes an entry in the charanam
+ The long phrases in the charanam

Nila Choru - 1st impressions
yes, I like the album. My 1st impressions:
1. Kallale Senju Vaccha - Sindhu Bhairavi base. Nice listen, although it has very typical Bhairavi phrases. Synth-Jazz arrangements.
2. Kaalayile Maalai - Abheri base. veena meets Synth arrangements. The synth percussions try to replicate Thavil. But a beautiful melody. Groovy synth i must say.
3. Unga Appan Peyar - Highlight of song is its unusual rhythm. the approach to tune reminded me of Manidha Manidha song. I feel Raaja went off-key at places (1st line itself actually, when he sings same line later in the song, he seems to be in control of swara). Strong 80s feel in charanams. Nice composition but singer selection could have been better.
4. Nandri Solla - Hamsadhwani base. Wonderful arrangements and nice melody (a bit predictable at places mainly because it somewhere makes you recall Unnai Ennakku song in same raagam). But lovely interludes. Karthik delivers it well.
Overall - the movie seems to be a low-budget one, as evidenced by the synth arrangements. Good thing is that the synth elements are not obtrusively sticking out of melodies (and their moods). They are woven into melody in an apt measure. I liked all songs though I prefer Kaalaiyile and Nandri Solla a bit more than others.
Detailed review later, after the album grows a bit ;-)

Orchestration is predominantly synth. Wait for expert views from V_Sji, Sureshji etc. All the songs have some classical base. Have listened to the last two only once.
Kaalaiyila - Synth drums (not bad) and what appears like a ghatam (synth?) in the ludes. Also the thavil (synth)
Nanri sollave - Mridangam
Kallaala senju - Has the poly rhythm going on with tabla punches along with the soap dabba. Great main melody though.
Ungappan - Synth pad in this song is a real shame because this appears to be out of the pazhassi stable rhythm wise.

Re: Raja's New Albums
ungappan pEra solli solli rocks to the core both in terms of melody and arrangements. Very difficult composition to compose and could not believe we can still get a new novel idea in keeravaani raagam. More lessons to be learned from Maestro.

Probably not. Couple of casual listens to Maryan makes me say that this is Rahman's worst in a long time. He gave VTV which I think is Rahman's best this decade (10s) a 100. If VTV was 100 this one should get a 10.
Usual disclaimer - Never a fan of his reviews / he often gets it wrong etc.,

Re: Raja's New Albums
First impression on couple of listens. Wonderful soundtrack.
Nandri solla vEndum and unga appan pERal solli solli no complaints, I am listening only these two repeatedly now. Outstanding! Songs of the year so far for me. Will write more later.
KallaalE senju vechcha: excellent and soothing melody, both the versions are very good. Haricharan fares slightly better than Priyadarshini, but the bhaavam is not same, Haricharan sings as a bright melody, while Priyadarshini sings like a pathos. Need to see the movie to see why this happens. It is interesting to hear exactly same tune and interludes but the bhaavam is different. If both the version has a different situation then it is an advantage, if not, then it is a disadvantage and a complaint. I also expected a real flute, mridangam and violins for this kind of melody which would have enhanced the sweetness and taken the song somewhere, nevertheless a song to be remembered for a long time.
KaalayilE maalai vanthathu: Outstanding tune, but I have to nitpick here, as I could not put this on top. Since I heard Saptaparna sing the cover version of kaNNan vanthu paadugindran and muthu maNi maalai, I had great expectation in Kaalayile Maalai Vandhathu, hoping this would be the top song of the soundtrack, but she was not that good at singing the pallavi and higher octave charanams. The bhaavam was also lacking even when she is singing in perfect sruthi. When she sings 'kaalayilE maalai vanthathu naan kaathiruntha veLai vanthathu', she pronounces each and every letter very hard (azhutham thiruthama) like kaa-laa-yi-lE maa-lai va-N-tha-thu thus losing out the actual meaning of the words. Because of this, the pallavi looks like some kid is singing (without understanding the meaning) and even the pallavi looks juvenile because of this. I felt it needs a better singer to give a great start. She gets into the groove slowly, but still bhaavam could have been much better. For example Priyadarshini in the above song was good (provided that was the intentional mood). Outstanding tune, could have been a song for Chitra/Shreya/Swetha/Manjari. I would like to highlight another song in the same raagam and a similar tune; adi poongkuyilE where Minmini nailed the mood effectively. Again this song deserves real orchestration to carry it long enough.
Again these are first impressions only.

Re: Raja's New Albums
nandri solla vendum needs more exposition.. it is sinking in slowly - opening newer doors with every listen..
As far as 'kaalayile' - the pallavi is "pallaanguzhiyin vattam' from 'aanandham' - but maestro diverts it into 'meettadha oru veenai' territory and
drives it again into 'kekkaliyo' territory and back - no wonder singer had so much trouble comprehending it..

You mean Kolakkiliye or kekkaliyo?. Because I found Kalaiyile maalai vanthathu has many similarities with kolakkiliye in both tune and music. In fact I think it is another but strange version of kolakkaliyo
