#16 narikkadhai (moonRAm piRai, Kamal / Sridevi)

Perhaps the only song that had Sridevi's name in credits It was dialog driven with some nursery-rhyme-like story telling lines in-between. As Plum observed in twitter, the காடு மாறிப்போச்சு, (அய்யய்யோ அப்புறம்) கலர் தேடிப்போச்சு was real funny

While many loved the scene and interaction between the lovely KH-SD pair, there were also many who criticized the song (and the whole movie), like "will a responsible school-master do such monkey things with a woman and make a fool of himself". Anyways, BM earned more good name than spoiling his reputation by that movie (despite the avoidable Silukku portions).

#17 EdhO mOham, EdhO dhAgam (kOzhi koovudhu, SJ-Krishnachandar)

We've recently seen that despite VM using the dhAgam word frequently, the "copyright" for that should be given to mahAkavi Not just in litt, even in the TF scene, kappalOttiya thamizhan pioneered the sudhandhira mOham / adimaiyin dhAgam & hence the later-day kavingars cannot ask for kAppeettu urimai for such coinages.

That way, the pallavi of this song is partly "borrowed". However, it got nicely embedded in one of the greatest orch ever in TFM plus SJ in peak form, to produce a classic! Add that lovely "vanakkiLiyE" word to the mix and VM starts showing up Well, with some sleazy lines in the saraNam, he definitely completes his signature (e.g. தொட்ட பாகம் தொட்டுப்பாத்து )

#18 poovE iLaiya poovE (kOzhi koovudhu, MV)

It was ILaiya Raja's kingdom and everything had to have its "ILaiya" version...(iLaiya nilA, iLaiya poo, iLampaniththuLi, iLanchirippu, iLampaLingu etc )

However, this song had some otherwise lovely lines (e.g. வரந்தரும் வசந்தமே) and that way really enjoyable and sweet lyrics nicely decorated by MV's singing + rAsA's smoothie style orch! The song was a patti-thotti hit and is a nice example of sophisticated grAmaththu song (and Prabhu romances Silukku on screen )

There was a minor controversy with censors who didn't like the disk version of "மடி மீது தேங்கும் தேனே" - for whatever nonsense reasons - and forced the team to change it to "மலர் மீது தேங்கும் தேனே" In any case, AIR - which typically frowns at any such thing with IR songs and jumps to ban it from broadcast - didn't find it offensive and the song was a regular on their programs

I think this was the time when VM earned the "sophi" tag and GA didn't bother about his getting the "dappAnguththu" tag - despite already having some years of some sophi writing in his resume. Well, we can't go back and change the history - it is what it is

#19 mAlai soodak kaNNE rAdhA nAL varAdhA? (kaNNE rAdhA, SPB-SPS)

Per TF / TFM grammar, many albums have a song with a pallavi that embeds the movie title. This one is like that! And there are two categories among them - the first one having the beginning of pallavi with the title and the second one having it somewhere else ( i.e. annakkiLi onnaththEdudhE v/s kuyilE kavikkuyilE). Depending upon the melody (& convenience), kavingars resort to one method or the other. VM chose the second style and the title comes after 'mAlai sooda' in this pallavi.

Overall, a commendable job of combing words together for a fast running song that has to have tons of shorter words (or syllables of words) to get packaged into this roller-coaster.

#20 sAlaiyOram sOlai onRu Adum sangeedham pAdum (SPB / SJ, payaNangaL mudivadhillai)

Without question one of the most popular albums of IR's career is payaNangaL mudivadhillai. Actually, it has a lot of historical importance in the history of TF - that of placing a MD in an iconic position among the stars! Giving him space in the poster, references to him in the advertisements and promotions etc.

VM got the opportunity to write three of the four "happy situation" songs in the movie. (Ey AthA is another happy one that went to GA, strengthening the public opinion that he is a 'dappAnguththu' lyricist, even though he wrote the pathos 'vaigaRaiyil' in the same album. The half-pulambal-half-happy 'rAga deepam' & azhuvachchi 'maNiyOsai kEttu ezhundhu' went to Muthulingam). That successful album, along with moonRAm piRai songs - both of which appeared in the very early part of 1982, gave VM a big status in the minds of listeners without doubt. (So much so that most people -including me - even credited songs not written by him to him by default...even from this PM album )

sAlaiyOram is the lesser of the three and I don't want to spend a lot of time on it (want to save my energy for the other two that are real GEMS whichever way one looks at them)...of course, this is terrific in orch but otherwise do not meet the levels achieved by the other two...

#21 thOgai iLamayil Adi varuguthu vAnil mazhai varumO? (SPB, payaNangaL mudivadhillai)

"நான் பாடும் ராகம் காற்றோடு கல்யாணம் செய்கின்றதோ?" is such a lovely expression - possibly even novel for that time - that immediately caught the attention of many. R Sundarrajan made sure the expression is well-noticed by getting a brand-new situation in a movie (singing for a TV station, showing the TV tower reminding viewers as to how exactly the voice gets married to winds).

In the movie, rival Gangai Amaran with his two kids watch the TV program and immediately offers the hero a chance. (He possibly considered himself "above" a lyricist those days, for he was a successful MD & about to be a Film director as well and didn't care VM to be competitor in the lyrics business at all).

Movies that dealt with such aesthetics (heroine a poet, simply by seeing her handwriting the hero instantly throws poetic lines - that too arranged to lovely melody and such) have become a thing of the past in the current "google-google" era and I wonder whether we'll get to watch such sensitive scenes any more in TF

VM gets to play in his strongest area (iyaRkai azhagu) combined with stuff in which he is not too far behind (girl appreciation) and hits continuous sixes in this song...look at the pAdal varikaL (ubayam disk.box):

#22 iLaiya nilA pozhigiRadhE (SPB, payaNangaL mudivadhillai)

I noticed youtube of this movie a couple of days back and ended up watching one more time It's pretty obvious that IR loved this composition and used it as title music & the theme music. He plays it at the last (climax) scene too. Actually, the whole story starts with how the paper on which this kavidhai got written by heroini accidently falls in the lap of hero. What a nice situation for some MD & lyricist to get charged up to give their best! R Sundarrajan should get some of the credit in inspiring IR / VM for this phenomenal number!

I've read this morning that IR has quoted this song to illustrate why "koottaNi" doesn't matter, obviously dissing Bharathiraja. Perhaps he also hinted in that kumudam reply that it was his suggestion to change from VM's original "salavai nilA" into "iLaya nilA" and that made a significant difference Regardless, this is one of VM's best poems for TFM. A real gift to nature-lovers and who appreciate such poems!

Vairamuthu shifting from his typical 'half-glass-empty' moanings to 'half-glass-full' approach in this song.
(How? He switches from vErvai / thAgam to kuLir / mazhai 'neengaL ennaippArththAl "kuLir" adikkum & manadhukkuL EnO "mazhai" adikkum )

While the movie was not much known among people even at the time of its arrival (and obviously unknown to anyone born during / after 80's), the songs had a lot of air time! That is, the three numbers above. In addition, 'pookkaL sindhungaL', which had a terrific orch including some novel sounds for the time period, had a lot of bus-time, teakkadai-time etc and people had it recorded in their cassettes too (which was the real "neyar-viruppam" channel those days )

I didn't even know those days who the lyricist was - nor cared to find out the details as there was nothing earth-shattering in those lines. They were listened with eagerness because of IR. Period. However, being hits and being identified as VM-written, it's my duty to get them in this thread for "book-keeping"

With no-hit-song from vAlibamE vA vA, the IR-VM stats summary gets a very small adjustment :

1976-79 + 1987 & after - None

1980 - < 2% (1 song)

1981 - 15% (10 songs)

1982 - 33% (31 songs out of 93) which is still significant, wrote 1/3 of the hits

1983 - 86 - 4 yrs To do

#26 vA vA vasanthamE, sugandharum sugandhamE (MV, pudhukkavidhai)

pudhukkavidhai is another "all-VM-show" and all the songs, including a pathos number were big hits! Obviously Rajini factor had a hand but the melodies & orch were extraordinary as well! IR gave some of his best songs to KB's production house regardless of who the director was. (This one by SPM).

I believe it was Plum (or was it groucho?) who observed in the hub that most of the "child / thAlAttu" kind of songs in Rajini movies were for kids that were not of the hero's (I believe that observation also included how Rajini typically had only female kids in whichever movie his character had children).

Anyways, this song is directed towards Saritha's child while the heroine of the movie was Jothi (I think a TR-find from one of his train trips). MV at his best and among the best-suited voices for Rajini! VM has decent lines for this deepAvaLippAttu :

I've listened to this song on headphones after a long time - realized that this is one of those "stereo-problem" numbers, where the complete percussion sounds are channeled to only one ear When heard as mono, no issues and that's how many songs got away with those days...

"கருப்புக்கன்னம் தொட்டு இட்டுக்கொள் நெற்றிப்பொட்டு" was probably something they wanted in the album to "neutralize" the otherwise வெள்ளை dominated album. Otherwise, it's just a fun song. No earth-shattering lines. 80's version of "கருப்புத்தான் எனக்குப்பிடிச்ச கலரு" (I mean lyrics, the song can still boast of lovely orch by rAsA)!

Let's move on to what Rajini called his most-fav song during that time period.

Of course, he effortlessly uses the "I got sunshine on a cloudy day" thingy in this song as in the case of many places in Thamizh litt and TFM ("நீயும் நானும் சேர்ந்தபோது கோடை கூட மார்கழி"). I recently read Chokkan / NagaS appreciating Pulamaippiththan for a similar usage All said and done, the vakkiram of "பூவும் என்னைச்சுடுவதென்ன" is vairam-only-fossible

We have two more albums from 1982 featuring VM (one 100% - 'ninaivellAm nithya' and another ~ 87.5% 'kAdhal Oviyam') and both are landmark albums for TFM IMHO.

Since most of these songs had SPB, I've covered my nostaligia and such in the SPB-IR thread extensively and I remember giving due credit to VM every now and then. Well, that doesn't mean I want to mention these gems just in passing in this IR-VM thread. I'll have to probably dedicate this whole week for those 13 gems and such focus is well-deserved!

While some consider mudhal mariyAdhai of 1985 as the peak of IR-VM, my personal opinion gives such top spot to NN. (MM is definitely far more emotional album but kavidhai, brilliance, orch, singinig - ippadi pala vidhangaLil NN outclasses that by miles!)

We've recently seen a lot of excitement for the NEPV album. (Even today I posted a few observations by Prabhu Ram in the NEPV thead). NEPV -while a monumental achievement as an album, also proved to be special to me in one extraordinary way - that it brought me back the days of NN! I got the same excitement when listening to NEPV for the first time on amazon on a weekend night as during my first-time-NN-day during college life!

mudhal muRai pArththa gnAbakam especially directly connected me (connects me every time) to the original NEPV song of NN My mind even plays the wah-wah guitar of NEPV's second interlude along when I hear the Sunidhi Chauhan song on car

What a lovely catch-phrase that VM put together for that NN number! Let's look at the pAdal varigaL of the song that I hosted as the #100 of SPB-IR thread :

#31 pani vizhum malar vanam (SPB, ninaivellAm nithyA)

This 'sElai moodum iLanjOlai' song was perhaps the biggest of that year and definitely one of the biggest in VM's career. There is even a movie now being made with the first line of this song as title and VM reportedly made a remark as to the "veeriyam" of that viththu which sprouted after three decades

#32 & #33 rOjAvaiththAlAttum thenRal (SPB-SJ) & kAnal neer pOl endhan kAdhal (SJ) - two songs from ninaivellAm nithya with the same melody - sugam / sOgam

I've praised VM's use of similes [url=] when I posted about the duet in IR-SPB series [/url] and need not repeat here

OTOH, the sOgappAttu didn't have opportunity to be hosted there and has to earn its praises here. The very first line featuring the legendary uvamai of 'kAnal neer' (mirage) to 'kAdhal' is such a terrific one!

While VM did great lines, one has to admit that the songs had their charm built more by the extra "Ah-hA-hE" kind of additional sounds by the singers. These are technically "fillers" by MD where the melody could not get an appropriate lyricist support. No catch word / phrase can be inserted there appropriately and hums had to be inserted. Which is fine, given our speeches are always like that - but it speaks more about the strengths of MD than the lyricist in such cases

#34 kannippoNNu kaimElE katti vachcha poomAla (MV / PS, ninaivellAm nithyA)

Tribal rAsA special - need I say more how charged up he would have been in putting this song together? (However, the song suffers in recording due to the primitive days of stereo in TFM, all percussion goes to one ear)

VM does a functional job in the lines, struggles to put thoughts and words together at some places and resorts to irattaikkiLavi (or meaningless gibberish) kind of stuff to match the matter to meter:

#35 thOLin mElE bAram illE (SPB, ninaivellAm nithyA)

I've read recently somewhere that "jAli lO gymkAnA'' was a coinage by the irate lyricist when Sridhar wanted some peppy lines (in place of proper Thamizh poem). Funnily, Sridhar found it interesting and the amaradeepam movie's song was a hit, paving way to such gibberish in TFM.

True to this tradition, Sridhar had such phrases in his movie songs from time to time and I believe it was his idea to have the 'mAmA miyyA' kind of stuff in the pallavi of this terrific song. I definitely don't think VM is to blame / credit for that part in this fast, beatsy number (i.e. unlike in the kannippoNNu song where he possibly struggled to get good poetry and filled with adukkuththodar, irattaikkiLavi kinds to match a peppy rAsA mettu).

Anyways, here are the lines (BTW, rAsA in top form in orch in this song!) :

Got featured in IR-SPB thread

#36 poovil vaNdu koodum (kAdhal Oviyam, SPB)

We've reached the last album of 1982 (i.e. for this thread), BR's kAdhal Oviyam, starring Radha & Kannan

VM wrote all songs except 'kuyilE kuyilE' (that one is credited to Panju Arunachalam). Most of them were quite brilliant and AravindMano has rightly pointed out in the first page of this thread that many were in awe!

Though this poo - vaNdu uvamai for female-male attraction is as old as the language, aesthetically presenting it within the boundaries placed by a melody is definitely a challenge. On top of it, to make it feel fresh calls for a brilliant mind and VM does have one, without question!

Of course this 'political shades in a romantic or nature appreciation song' shows up in this too. (பூவினம் "மாநாடு" போடும் ) However, we can take that as VM's signature and pass along to enjoy some nice word play (நாதம் ஒன்று போதும் எந்தன் ஆயுள் கோடி மாதம் ). Obviously, one cannot close eyes to some VM-brand comedy as well : தீயில் நின்றபோதும் அந்தத் தீயே வெந்து போகும்

One stanza song focussing on "silamboli" and a mangaLakaramAna appendix by chorus that gives opportunity for some juicy lines ("விரலின் ஸ்பரிசம் உயிரை உரசும்") and VM excels in both departments

The song is a nice package by rAsA and got featured in the SPB-IR thread

A short song depicting the distress of the lead character and VM does a neat job putting together some emotional lines. Interesting to also see some nice word play (மலரில் உறங்கும் பூங்காற்று அதனை எழுப்பும் என் பாட்டு).
