Well, this song was my personal "most sought after" from the album because it really had "cool sounds" for that time period Looking back, the other three songs that Vaali wrote had somewhat better lyrics and melodies (vizhiyil un vizhiyil, nadakkattum rAjA namma rAjjiyam & nAn dhAN ongoppandA nalla muththuthEvandA).

Yes, there are some VM-trade mark lines like "வானவில்லில் நார் கிழித்து" (funny uyarvu naviRchi) , "தாமரையில் நீர்த்துளிகள் ஒட்டுவதில்லை" (science teacher), "அது சட்டமும் இல்லை" (communism in cabaret dance, like 'kELvikaLAl vELvi' in nature appreciation) & 'பொய் ராகம்' (his typical "shock-value" thingy)

However, this was mostly "word-fitting-to-a-mettu-by-breaking-words-into-meaningless-syllables" kind and not smooth / impressive IMHO!

This was supposedly a very big budget, "high visibility" project (BR-Kamal combo with 3 heroines in swimsuit) for that time period. Basking in the success of alaigaL Oyvadhillai, BR was everywhere in the media. The "stills" obviously made much more noise, courtesy Madhavi.

Possibly the old song 'mAdhavipponmayilAL thOgai viriththAL' inspired VM to write the line 'poo malarndhida nadamidum pon mayilE' :-)

Lovely pallavi (though the " I love you" part to make it sound cool spoils the aesthetics) :

One of my all-time-fav rAsA songs and very interesting first line by VM! Very influential phrase among story writers / column writers etc since its arrival. Though the song has some adult content, it's reasonably camouflaged unlike 'Ayiram thAmarai' or 'andhi mazhai'.

Or, may be it wasn't as shocking as the heroini's dhArALam and hence didn't contribute much to the "matRa" kind of impact on this impressionable youth of 12th grade / 1st year college Actually the 'nadhir dhanna' business that IR often associates with matRadhu is stronger

BTW, please believe me, my most favourite part of the movie then and now are the BGM pieces, fantastic score by rAsA! We discussed it endlessly in hostel and often I shamelessly "sung" them...As I write this, the rA-rara-rara piece when Kamal searches for Swapna's phone number plays in my mind.

Looks like VM loves வானவில் being used to adorn women As usual, we see his communistic leanings show up as "உள்ளங்கையில் சொர்க்கம்" & "புருவம் அசைத்தால் பூமி சுற்றாது", though nicely fitted here to girls. Full of interesting phrases (நிலவு நெளியாதோ, அருவி நிமிராதோ, தங்க தேகங்கள், ராஜ மேகங்கள், பருவப் பூக்கள்) that decorate the sweet melody & orchestration!

Long ago in TFMPage they came up with an 'algorithm' for VM's songs. It was based on OO concepts - for eg. object-attribute-action - thEnaaru indu neeraadum - i.e. the object itself becomes the subject of its own action. Also, vErvai is another favorite term in his writings (vs vanji in TRs poems).

First of all, let me request Jaiganesh to write in detail and appreciate this song in this thread...besides being the best-imagery-specialist, he is the most qualified to write on this specific song IMHO (Because I remember him rebuking me in the hub for a mild ridicule of this number...regardless, I want to compile some of that kind in this post )

Unquestionably the most popular of the rAsA-VM numbers, evergreen, great to listen everytime, the words fit kachchidham to the tune etc. Recently heard that even attending the composing session inspired GA to create the 'vandhanam' song of vAzhvE mAyam! Quite a powerful song!

Also, the song got maximum press at the time of arrival - VM got featured in every Thamizh mag during that time and often asked to explain meaning for some phrases.

"இந்திரன் தோட்டத்து முந்திரியே" அப்படீன்னா என்ன அர்த்தம்?

"இந்திரன் வீரியமிக்கவன். முந்திரியும் வீரியமிக்கது. அப்போ இந்திரன் தோட்டத்து முந்திரி எவ்வளவு அதிக வீரியத்தோட இருக்கும்?"

I guess some cashew growers' association paid VM to promote their product among "struggling" men The problem is IR / Kamal / Singeetham ghOshti spoiled the fun by making SPB sing those lines (directing them to the girl) instead of SJ singing it directing to the boy. ellAm pOchchu!

There's another funny thing "தேனில் வண்டு மூழ்கும்போது பாவம் என்று வந்தாள் மாது" -what is there to pity about and rescue the vaNdu? Also, since the poo that gives honey is THE girl, who is this another மாது who comes to the rescue? A second lady?

The song of course had a number of VM-patented-stuff ("நெஞ்சுக்குள் தீ", "தண்ணீரில் மூழ்கிக்கொண்டே தாகம்", "தேகம் யாவும் தீயின் தாகம்", "தண்ணீரில் நிற்கும் போதே வேர்க்கின்றது"). While such ones may be made fun of today, sure enough, they were novelties at the time of arrival!

Finally, on the first line of the pallavi : IR made fun of it during later years, like, 'how can the blind hero see the face of the girl in each drop of rain water?'...Most people, means me included, had simply dismissed it as his ridicule of VM due to their saNdai. Personally, I even questioned like 'Wasn't IR part of the group that signed-off the pallavi in 1981, even enjoyed the success and populartity those days, so why is he bringing it up now'...

Well, when I started to write about this song in this thread, I started wondering how can IR be so naive not to understand what the "rain" really was (especially considering that it was supposed to be sung by the girl to start with, including the cashew part)! Well, let's not get into risque stuff -sufficient to mention (given the overall stuff of the song) that it's another "science lesson" in reproduction / genetics

i remember us discussing the "nenjapporu" - adhu oru aganaanooru stuff - porudhal is literally fighting - other meaning is waiting, here there are multitudes of meanings applicable. nenjaporu has another significance- the man is blind and how can a girl overwhelm his senses - when the major of the senses - sight is not functioning - only through physical contact - and if it is the first of its kind the man has - just imagine his state - that is why "nenjuporu" and the need for dhaavani visiri. another layer is that it details a sequence that the girl has to do - because she is not blind - but has to carefully take the lead in such stuff so 'nenju poru' - now the meaning is literally hugging - konjam iru - now hold on - i know u are overwhelmed - dhaavani visirigal - cool down and then for that purpose - sandhanamaai enai poosugiren on the places with wounds from the cupid - a literal text book - as decently verbalizable as it can be - pure literotica - but the music is operating on a different plane - it is traveling in pure 'sonic' levels zooming in and out to help the lyrics along - but the pure consummation of the words and music that happens in this song is without a parallel. diamond is unleashed to imagine as much as he can and all the 'il porul uvamai ani' in the form of blind seeing the girl's face in rain drops - suit this song rather well.. all in all - this is one of vairamuthu's best contributions to thamizh film music history.

IR-VM hits #10 & #11

There are two more hit songs penned by VM in his "mercurial rise" year of 1981, both from ArAdhanai, and there were no earth-shattering kind of lines in them IIRC. Also, the movie flopped and is now remembered only by those songs. Actually, we shouldn't be talking about the "movie-hit-or-not" status at all when discussing IR-VM songs as most happened to be from commercial flops only

That is actually some additional brownie points to VM (as also to IR, because the songs were hits despite the disadvantage). Out of the 11 IR-VM songs in 1980 & 1981, only the three from alaigaL Oyvathillai were from a successful movie.

Our VM tracking so far has given 11 hits (1 for 1980 & 10 for 1981).

Also, we've objectively seen that the contribution of VM to the IR rAjyam as a lyric writer until this point had been :

- None in the years 1976, 1977, 1978, 1979 and most part of 1980 - a period during which rAsA had scored 100+ movies with some 300+ hit songs, setting TN ablaze.

-In % terms, less than 2% in the year 1980 with that awesome pon mAlaippozhudhu

-And around 15% in the year 1981 with those 10 hit numbers (I've even posted ALL the hits for IR for that year in one of the posts, VM & otherwise).

Now it's time to move to the next year, a real BIG year for VM, 1982 (with ninaivellAm nithyA)...

One good thing about this 1982 hunt is ALL-VINYL-COVERS-except-vAlibamE-vA-vA are available from musicalaya!

That BR movie had 5 lyricists in the titles (Vaali, Muthulingam, Pulamaippiththan, Vairamuthu & GA). So, that seems to be the only challenge for now - who wrote what song in that movie

Per my memory, among all IR-BR movies, that one was the least popular album! Still, I had involuntary listens of two songs reasonably frequently (ponvAnappoongAvil & azhagE unnaikkonjam). We need to know if VM had penned one of those two "hits".

For other movies, I should be able to publish the hit-list pretty easily (college year, quick-recall-of-data possible)!

Kanne Balam with Beeman-Kaaman rhyming sounds like Vaali( but madhu mAngani could indicate Pulamaipiththan also who had a thing for mAnganis).

pon vaana poonga - kaveri invocation indicates Sreerangam rangarajan; Rhyming neeraga with nooRaga strengthens that suspicion. Anandam-Arambam rhyming almost confirms Vaali

BTW, there was another song 'takkaru takkaru, takkaru takkaru, takkaru baby' in that film (that was added on-screen after trade declaring it a disaster, they advertised on posters about the "extra" song). I've never had a chance to hear that song (and don't intend to watch the movie for that )

A quick look at the vinyls show that VM wrote for an impressive 15 albums of rAsA in that year (out of the 26 we listed above)! And those were : AgAya G, echchi I, EVK, kAdhal O, kaNNE R, kOzhi K, maganE M, MP, NN, nizhal TN, PM, puthu K, rANi T, thooral NP, VVV...at least 5 of them BO hit movies, a big improvement from the prior two years!

So, VM had 34.41% while other lyricists had 65.59%...

VM penned 32 out of these! Again, quite a remarkable feat, even though most of them vizhalukku iRaiththa kind, for flop movies (kAdhal Oviyam 7, ninaivellAm nithyA 6 taking big share).

So, VM had 34.41% while other lyricists had 65.59%...

I'll try to cover all the VM hits in this thread, giving lyrics and small tit-bits / appreciation! Absolutely no "Ora vanjanai"

As you probably know, my PoV is mostly from a "dhindukkal, thiruchchi, madhurai" kind of observation (teakkadai, bus, vividh bhArathi, IOKS).

As much as I could be in touch with my Madras cousin (limited communication those days), some status was known but I was mostly oblivious to what was happening in TN capital - other than to the extent media published. (For e.g. payaNangaL mudivadhillai celebrated silver jubilee everywhere, not just in Trichy but in Madras also - like that )

azhagiya kaNNE - only these two songs (hEy mAmA / chinnachchinna) had frequent playbacks on radio. These weren't that hot otherwise on the "social media". (Our hostel mate obviously had them recorded and we played frequently - 'nAnirukkum' SJ number I love too - but I discounted that part in the "hit" consideration which was driven purely by how the public received it).

Same "radio-play-back" is the consideration for the EVK songs. (kAdhal paNpAdu, en gAnam were more frequent than 'kanavil midhakkum'. Others never on radio).

I remember posting a few times about how I had been dragged to the movie by this Thanjavur guy, even though it didn't last beyond a couple of days in theater. We had the TDK-recorded-songs much before the movie's arrival and I loved them prior to watching that Pradhap-Radhika joke of a film.

About kavidhai malar - never heard them those days, first time listen in thiraippAdal only. Do I need to say more, about an early 80's song?

EVK was scripted by Ananthu. So can expect some qOlity. Everytime I think of watching it Appji's posts discourage me.

Even I am surprised that naan irukkum wasn't that big a hit back then. Because in this Internet era, that's the only popular song from azhagiya kaNNE. What a lovely song that is. Distortion guitars to veeNai, remember posting about it in twitter. The scene which precedes the song was so similar to the famous Johnny proposal scene.

Mostly correct - yes, the red ones are by VM.

'poo mEla veesum poongAththE' (KJY/VJ) is credited to Vallapan. (Could be M G Vallaban but the vinyl is missing the initials).

#12 kAdhal paN pAdu (eera vizhikkAviyangaL, KJY)

Climax song of that movie - where the dream of becoming a stage singer is achieved by the poor Prathap. When he starts to sing, could not find the main motivating force -the lady love Radhika - in the audience and accordingly the "பாடகன் இங்கே, மாலைகள் இங்கே, தேவதை எங்கே?" phrase gets repeated in the saraNam.

I guess the 80's had a number of movies centered around light music singers and some had big success. (Sridevi was one in Johny, Mohan in a number of movies, notably payaNangaL mudivadhillai in the same year 1982, Ambika in nAn pAdum pAdal). Most were powered by the music of rAsA and VM had some nice contribution there as well.

This movie, unfortunately, failed to click despite the best efforts of IR. This particular song, which is supposed to showcase the "pain-relief" situation of the aspiring singer, gets totally side-tracked because of the "lover-missing" situation presented by the director. So, it's a mixed-emotions scenario and VM aptly caught it in the lines:

#13 en gAnam inRu arangERum (IR / Jency, eeravizhikkAviyangaL)

V_Sji has written about this song in the rAsA duets thread of the hub IIRC. Extremely sweet guitar number and IR perhaps got reminded of his own struggle prior to hitting it big and that emotional pain is felt in his singing! There's no question VM captured such feel nicely in the pallavi.

However, there's this "love" equation that keeps coming up in all those "aspiring musician" movies of those days (often as to how a girl motivated the boy or how she made sure he gets into self-pity mode to create poems / music etc). According to that rule, the saraNams are forced to bring that equation and some pulambal singing by the girl in the end.

Typical VM elements (love+communism, positive+negative etc) are present in the song, e.g. பாலைவனத்தின் பனிமழை, சருகு மலர்ந்திடுமே, சங்கீத மாநாடு, இமை மீது சுடுகின்ற கனவு

#14 thangachchangili minnum paingiLi (thooRal ninnu pOchchu, MV-SJ)

If someone simply told me there's a new rAsA song that goes like 'thangachchangili', I would've felt irritated those days - as that wasn't really a "cool" phrase among "educated" Very much a "country" word for chain (which is how even most illiterates used to call the ornament, "thangaththula chainu senjirukkAnga" is quite common).

However, it didn't happen that way but I first got the opportunity of LISTENING to that awesome, awesome song and really didn't care what words got packaged into it - power of rAsA music those days!

Looking back, it's not all that "forced-country-style" lyrics but generally ok...but there's also some touch of sophistication to the lines.

i.e. The VM version of sophistication - "வேர்வைகளில் நீராடினாள்"

Well, the last line is definitely terrific poem : "இதழில் இதழால் கடிதம் எழுது", what an interesting situation there

Fantastic song that showcases the poet's ability to beautifully portray nature in words!

Nice one by VM after his lovely idhu oru ponmAlaippozhudhu & idhu oru nilAkkAlam - though this one didn't get as much recognition as those two. (I guess that must be due to the reason that the song was not included in the disks that could hold only 4 numbers...also I believe in some places it wasn't on movie, apart from the fact that even where it was included in the movie, there was only half the song...the accident happens during the second interlude).

As usual, the second stanza jumps away from the original theme of "sunrise appreciation" to "girl-beauty-joLLu" (மண்ணை ஏலம் போடலாம் / கரையேறும் மீன்கள் etc). I think this was the time period when there was a news report about people who came to the shooting spot where "silukku" was dancing dying to eat the apple bitten by her and consequently there was an "auction"

Perhaps that influenced VM to write about the "ஏலம் போடலாம்" business
