When I posted the manasu mayangum song in the SPB-IR thread, I didn't type the song name in English

Plum assumed it was suvvi suvvi and poured out post after post, describing the song, starting from this one:

Despite the dubbing limitation, VM manages to throw in a superb thaththuvam "துன்பம் என்றும் ஆணுக்கல்ல அது அன்றும் இன்றும் பெண்களுக்கே" - sad fact of lives!

Sweet song, like I mentioned in the SPB-IR thread, a clear SPB special!

SPB special - in short. As mentioned many times in the hub, reethigowLai rAgA based kathA kalAkshEba number. With frequent variations in tune, rAsA keeps the interest alive (while the lines are of nursery rhyme standard). Like V_Sji reminded us in his post, a pivotal song for the movie as there's a big turn of events with this song.

kaNNodu kaNNana en kaNNA (sippikkuL muthu, SPB/SJ)

Other than some siththu vElaikaL by SPB, as observed in the post in IR-SPB thread nothing special to me in this song on a personal basis. Actually, the SJ singing as child was even an irritant (but she emotes very well, as usual, as the mother).

Dubbing limitations but VM wrote acceptable stuff IMHO...that worked for the situation. Nothing special, however.

Well, not much to write about the song - that had its own bus time and heard quite a bit in TN during the time of the movie's run...

App - in tamil Rama KanavemirA might be nursery rhyme lyrics but that is where Vairamuthu is a kathukutti.
In telugu, the lyrics are of such beauty, assimilating like butter into the tunes, and on top of it...read on:

Chekka Bhajana is a Telugu folk form, with two sticks, predominantly for Vaishnavite especially Rama bhajans I think
This song is actually an amalgmation of harikatha(kathakalakshebam) as we call it, Chekka Bhajana and plain kolattam. I dont know who is the lyricist but with K Vishwanath involved, one would imagine Veturi, along with KV could have been the source of the idea of doing the song this way: And who but Raja with his encyclopaediac knowledge of south indian folk music could fuse this all into an emotional roller-coaster, which, while ostensibly telling the story of the epic heroine Seetha, deftly weaves into the story of the protagonist of this movie.
In keeping with the same theme, other songs in the movie also refer to the Rama-Seetha story and the thAlAttu firmly refers Vaishnavite symbols.

Such unified, integrated approach - and VM could only do nursery rhyme translations, instead of probably referring to tamil vaishnavite traditions....actually, who but Vaali for this. A big miss, not using Vaali for this.

விஷயம் இது தான் - இந்தப் பத்ம விருதுகளைக் கொடுக்கும் அரசு அதற்கான அப்ளிகேஷன் ஃபார்ம் எனப்படும் விண்ணப்பப் படிவங்களில் ஒருவரது பெயரை வாங்கிக்கொள்கிறது. இப்படி இருக்கும் அறிவிப்புப் பட்டியலில் "வி ஆர் தேவர் " என்ற தமிழ்ப்பாடலாசிரியருக்கு விருது அளிப்பதாக அரசு அறிவிக்க, இவர் யாரென்று வியந்த தமிழுலகம் சுதாரித்துக் கொண்டு வைரமுத்து தான் இந்த தேவர் என அறிகிறது!

I've categorized this song in the IR-SPB thread as a 1987-er, because the movie got released in the year I think. However, going by the "album release date" that I've been using recently, this album / song came in 1986. Songs from this movie were popular those days even though not very close to me (as reported earlier in that thread). I even compared this number there with some Bappi Lahiri hits of those years

Obviously, the lines added zero value to the not-so-great-melody (IMO). The song earned a place in the memory purely based on interludes...yes, it was a regular on buses those days. And yes, the movie - with Kamal / Ambika / Radha is a horror

Obviously, the sugam version is many times superior to the sOgappAttu (VM is quite weak in thaththuvams IMO and struggles to put together words for this number. Even in his famous poongAththu thirumbumA number the saraNam lines aren't that phenomenal).

Focussing on the +ves, I would give him easily A+ for the suga number - what lovely ways he describes the happy hearts! The bubbly enthu, that flying feeling - excellent support by the lines to the melody & orch! (e.g. றெக்க கட்டிப்பறக்குது / அல வந்து மனசில அடிக்குது WOW)

Easily one of the best duets EVER in TFM history!
(IR & SJ add fantastic value as singers as well, add those vocal harmony stuff - it's a splendid song in every count!)

Since I've always listened to only the SPB version and typically don't recall what got played on the screen, was a little bit surprised by the duet version on the youtube:


The SJ lines are not the same as in the SPB solo version as below:

Since the lines are not significantly better, didn't bother listing them by listening to the youtube. (The ones above are mediocre as well, as one can observe).

SPB gave a lot of life to these listless lines and I've documented it as part of the mayyam thread . rAsA's score, as usual, is haunting. Such pathos numbers always received rich orchestral score in the interludes!

Nothing much for VM to be proud about the lines ( for e.g. I get irritated with the "புடவை அது புதுசு கிழிந்து அழும் மனசு" kind of gibberish) - however, the song was a hit!

BTW, I am reserving the 198th spot for "kodiyilE malligappoo" and accordingly will not post about it as the next number.

Will finish all other songs and close the documentation on a high note with the perfect-10 song in the end!

Looks like our online discussions, mafia's twitter wars and propaganda-countering are having an effect?  . Even in that FB post about IR's too much "I" usage most comments were surprisingly critical of the writer. I have even noticed that many people have started saying "Kalaignanukku Anavam irukka dhAn seyyum" etc. In fact I heard this statement from someone who I'd never thought was capable of such sophisticated thinking. 

VM fans getting a taste of their own medicine. First Plum's mock satirical post and now this. Loving it  . ARR pathiyum appdi oru post pOttrnga Plum saar...

In my book, ARR is not as despicable as VM. Sure, he started out with a grouse in his heart - he actually felt the pangs of rejection by Raja but never imagined he could dethrone Raja and settled as a jingle composer, happy with his lot. When Muni came calling, even then he admits he didn't realise he could turn the tables in TFM. He just thought he will do one movie and return to jingles. 

It was the VM-KB-GV gumbal that seized on the opportunity - and if you notice, it wasn't special treatment for Rahman, they had tried all that with Maragadhamani and various others. VM among them promoted Sangarji-Ganeshji, Sandirabose aNNan, down to Sampath-Selvan to no avail - and mandhirichi vuttufied him. Initially, Rahman, based on his confidence that he'll go back to jingles anyway, was an arrogant man who spoke his mind - "Tabla Dholakai thuraththuvEn", remember? - but this group groomed him into "I 3 luvs humanity" to counter IR. They knew that to bring down IR needs a propoganda war to slur IR's character.

Then Rahman started playing the same game.

In all this, Vairamuthu is the saguni. ARR might be Duryodhan, Mani might be Karnan, KB Dhritharashtra, albeit a vile, cunning, active Dhritharashtra, But VM is the saguni. He tried several composers before ARR clicked.

I dont have the same level of vanmam for ARR as I have for VM.
