Re: Ilayaraja & Vairamuthu Combo - Checks & Balances (198 hits processed)
ThiraiPaadal.com has come back and the result is FOUR MORE albums added to my 1983 list, making it a huge 46 for 1983!
Now, the task is to look at each, locate vinyls (or otherwise find lyricists), get the hit-list, classify VM-or-other...
solid work...
Just for info, following are the albums that are getting accounted for 1983 :

Re: Ilayaraja & Vairamuthu Combo - Checks & Balances (198 hits processed)
I don't know why people continue to add "VM" to the IR-BR alchemy related queries (which are otherwise not so outrageous, IMHO) :
https://pbs.twimg.com/media/BMD5lAJCYAEGVHN.jpg:large
Well, this being the VM thread, I'll have to post ALL THE BR movies composed by IR & the corresponding VM contribution, let me do it as a reference work!
BR's films with IR as composer :
1. 16 vayadhinilE (1978) - BR's debut, classic, made KH-SD-RK bigger stars, silver jubilee hit, all songs hit (sOLam vedhakkayilE, sendhoorappoovE, Attukkutty muttai ittu, sevvandhippoo mudichcha, manjakkuLichchu), NO VM!
2. kizhakkE pOgum rayil (1978) - BR's second, launched Radhika, silver jubilee hit, all songs (including non-picturized one) hits (poovarasampoo, malargaLE nAdhaswarangaL, mAnjOlaikkiLi dhAnO, kOvil maNi Osai thannai), NO VM!
3. sigappu rOjAkkaL (1978) - BR's third, first "city" movie of his, silver jubilee hit, both songs hit (minminikku, ninaivO oru paRavai), NO VM!
4. pudhiya vArppugaL (1979) - BR's 4th, launched Bagyaraj / Rathi, silver jubilee hit, three mega hit songs (thamthana namdhana, idhayam pOguthE, vAn mEgangaLE), NO VM!
5. niRam mARAdha pookkaL (1979) - BR's 5th, not very successful but modest run, three mega hit songs, first SPB song in a BR movie (Ayiram malargaLE, iru paRavaigaL, mudhal mudhalAga) NO VM!
6. kallukkuL eeram (1980) - BR's mERpArvai of direction, acted as hero, all songs hits, movie flop (kothamallippoovE, eNNaththil EdhO, thOppiloru nAdakam, siRuponmaNi asaiyum) NO VM!
7. nizhalgaL (1980) - BR's first massive flop as director, all songs hits & classics, one of the top albums of TF ever IMHO. (madai thiRandhu, pon mAlaippozhudhu, poongathavE thAzh thiRavAy, dhooraththil nAn kaNda), VM wrote 1 of the 4 hit songs
8. alaigaL Oyvadhillai (1980) - IR's family production, movie big hit, all songs big hits (Ayiram thAmarai, kAdhal Oviyam, darisanam kidaikkAdhA, vizhiyil vizhundhu, vAdi en kappakkezhangE, putham pudhukkAlai), VM wrote 3 songs our of 6 hits
9. tik tik tik (1981) - BR's big flop despite Kamal, Rajini's wife sang a song, all three songs big hits (idhu oru nilAkkAlam, poo malarndhida, nEtRu indha nEram) VM wrote 2 our of 3 hit songs
10. kAdhal Oviyam (1982) - Another big flop by BR, all songs, however, were hits! (ammA azhagE, kuyilE kuyilE, nAdham en jeevanE, poovil vaNdu, poojaikkAga, nadhiyil Adum, veLLichchalangaigaL, sangeetha jAthimullai) Major one for VM as he did all but one song for a flop movie
11. vAlibamE vA vA (1982) - Biggest flop of BR's career, only two hit songs (ponvAnappoongAvil, azhagE unnaikkonjam) No hit song by VM, both hits by others
12. maN vAsanai (1983) - Modest hit movie after a hat-trick of flops, launched Revathy, four hit songs of which one was pathos of another (pothi vachcha - sugam & sOgam, arisi kuththum, AnandhaththEn sindhum) VM had 2 hits, same song sugam-sOgam others wrote 2 hits
13. oru kaidhiyin diary (1985) - Hit movie, 2 Kamals, KBR coming back to help out BR with screenplay, three hit songs (idhu rOsAppoovu, ABC nee vAsi, pon mAnE) - All 3 hits by VM, first BR hit with all songs by VM IIRC
14. mudhal mariyAdhai (1985) - Big hit, classic, BR directing NT, all songs hit (E kiLi irukku, ERAdha mala mElE, E kuruvi, rAsAvE onna nambi, poongAtRu thirumbumA, vetti vEru vAsam, andha nelAvaththAn) All 7 hits by VM, he even introduced songs on the disk!
15. kadalOrakkavidhaikaL (1986) - moderate hit, last one with IR-VM-BR combo, all songs hit (pOguthE pOguthE, adi AththAdi, kodiyilE, podi nadaiyA - even the BGM song chinnappa dAs dAs) Three hit songs by VM, two by others
With that IR-BR-VM broke up!
BR came back to IR in 1990 and they did 3 movies together again, obviously without VM and the movies didn't fare that greatly on BO, but songs were big hits without question :
16. ennuyirththOzhan (1990) - E rAsAththi, kuyilukkuppam, machchi mannAru were moderate hit songs
17. pudhu nellu pudhu nAththu (1990) - chittAnchittAn kuruvi, karuththa machchAn, poo poo poo were all hit songs, karuththa machchAN was a real biggie
18. nAdOdiththenRal (1992) - last movie of BR-IR combo thus far, many hit songs - maNiyE maNikkuyilE, sandhana mArbilE, All the time, oru kaNam oru yugamAka, ElamalaikkAttukkuLLE, yArum viLaiyAdum thOttam
Of course, BR had a couple of hits in Telugu, with rAsA music (i.e. remakes of his Thamizh hits) but it's improbable VM wrote for them
From the above list, one can LOGICALLY CONCLUDE that VM or no VM, there had been MANY hit movies / songs in the IR-BR combo! Why add him to this mix in IR-BR discussions?
BR is deliberately making himself a laughing stock! (Earlier the mottai gOpuram thing and now this stupid Q&A)
p.s. - If there is any significant miss in the listing above, please inform...always willing to get corrected

Re: Ilayaraja & Vairamuthu Combo - Checks & Balances (198 hits processed)
Another BR kaLLaththanam in that reply is "selectively quoting" ninaivellAm nithyA, an utter flop movie, to bring VM into the equation
Sridhar-IR combo made terrific hit albums iLamai oonjalAdukiRadhu & azhagE unnai ArAdhikkiREn and the movies were BO hits as well!
Why did this fellow selectively omit those EARLIER ones in his "reference"?
anga dhAN avaradhu kaLLaththanam, to include VM!

Re: Ilayaraja & Vairamuthu Combo - Checks & Balances (198 hits processed)
rAsA had around 100 hit songs in 1983 TFM alone (many of them massive hits, popular even today) and it's not easy to catalog / classify
VM should easily have 1/3 of them as per indications so far
I'll get the finalized data in a day or two...

Re: Ilayaraja & Vairamuthu Combo - Checks & Balances (198 hits processed)
OK, here is the list of hits from 1983 (I tried to be as objective as possible, tossing anything that's unfamiliar)...
It's a huge list of 113 hit songs, in a single calendar year for rAsA (and many of these patti-thotti-citi hits, only a few were 'radio-only' kind...this was the era of "bus & teakkadai music" and recording centers firmly getting established, rAsA getting banners / posters etc)! The VM ones are "colored"
Accordingly, the number for VM is 42 ! A whopping 37% of rAsA's TFM hits in that year!
Others did only 71 hits for IR this year!

Re: Ilayaraja & Vairamuthu Combo - Checks & Balances (198 hits processed)
Correction - I've already accounted kOzhi koovudhu in 1982 :oops:So, need to take out those from 1983 and thus the numbers change a little bit...
For 1983, IR's hits come down to 106...with VM having 40 of them, the percentage goes slightly up - to 38%!
Overall, IR-VM stats are as below :
1976-79 + 1987 & after - None
1980-< 2% (1 song)
1981-15% (10 songs)
1982-33% (31 songs)

Re: Ilayaraja & Vairamuthu Combo - Checks & Balances (198 hits processed)
Let us feature the next IR-VM song from gOpurangaL sAyvadhillai, director Manivannan's first movie as a director!
#43 poo vAdaikkAtRu vandhu Adai theeNduthE (SJ / Krishnachandar & thogaiyaRA by IR)
The untimely demise of Manivannan last week, too early to die still in his 50's, came as a shocking reminder as to the nilaiyAmai of humans. As he himself recalled during a function related to his recent 50th movie, one reason he got directorial opportunity was IR's reco. He maintained his appreciation for IR in all public forums - despite not having IR for some of his movies, including the most recent one.
That said, majority of his extremely successful movies had rAsA's music as a great support! The most popular one, IMO, being nooRAvadhu nAL - that had terrific, terrific BGM by rAsA!
IR paid respect to the director's body, looking very sad.
This 'arukkANi' movie had Mohan flirting with Radha (Suhasini acts as his wife with a thEL kodukku pinnal mudi and the rustic name 'arukkANi'). It had a modest success at BO and Manivannan continued to direct a lot of movies - sometimes 4,5 in a single calendar year!
This song is a personal favourite to me and was quite popular at the time of arrival, despite KC Yes, IR had the 'EdhO mOgam' hit pair, for a somewhat similar situational / similar husky sounding sensuous duet! Has the same mOgam / dhAgam business too (Obviously, it is not comparable to the former in any measure). A guitar special, with some interesting phrases - like "அம்பிகை தங்கை என்று" (rAdhA younger sister of ambikA)!
Look at the pAdal varikaL:

This song is a personal favourite to me and was quite popular at the time of arrival, despite KC Yes, IR had the 'EdhO mOgam' hit pair, for a somewhat similar situational / similar husky sounding sensuous duet! Has the same mOgam / dhAgam business too (Obviously, it is not comparable to the former in any measure). A guitar special, with some interesting phrases - like "அம்பிகை தங்கை என்று" (rAdhA younger sister of ambikA)!
Look at the pAdal varikaL:

Warning - digression from the checks & balances business that happens in this thread...
Plum has posted a nice write-up on VM's dubbing lyrics for K Viswanath classics in the Telugu thread.
He made fun of the "வகையான லாலி" there and that prompted me to post some tweets with#VMComedy tag...capturing them here together :
End of digression, now will continue with 1983 songs of IR-VM combo

Actually that othadam ittadhum niththirai is nice. I am not much of a poetic meaning person, so what catches my attention is the perfect lyrical flourish there - it sits well on the tune, and is indistinguishable from the swaram rendering of the tune. And it's not a bad karpanai either...

That was a real difficult sandham - முத்திரை ஒத்தடம் இட்டதும் நித்திரை வருமே. And as Plumji says the line sits extremely well and makes a lot of sense too. I would go one step ahead and call the lyrics in this song (Pallavi especially) brilliant.

Plum & Nerd,
Totally agree it's a difficult sandham and the lyrical "flourish" is enjoyable
Mine was more of a nit-pick, trying to extract some comedy out of it

Re: Ilayaraja & Vairamuthu Combo - Checks & Balances (198 hits processed)
While one can apprecaite VM writing "matter for meter" appropriately, I still find this particular matter (which is a "matter" matter) not well-suited.
It is more of pandhu-sindhu kind of VM trying to get the rhyme (muththirai-niththirai) rather than getting the theme right...
Look at the setting - a jollu man getting into an extra-marital affair and the chinna veedu entertaining him in bed.
Where is the place for 'niththirai' (sleep) there?
(An imaginary conversation between KBR and a friend :
Friend : adappAvi chinna veedu setup paNNeettiyA? ennadA idhu aniyAyam?
KBR : adappOdA, matRdhellAm onnum illadA, ava muththam kuduththa udanE enakku nallA thookkam varudhu, adhu dhANdA vishayam! )
sittukkuruvi vekkappadhu - pettaikkuruvi kaththuth tharudhu
thottup pazhakap pazhaga sorggam varudhu
kattith thazhuvath thazhuvak kattil sududhu
andhappuramE sugamE tharumE
All the above lines indicate the passion between the man & woman and it's obvious they're getting into the act.
If anything, KBR wouldn't have wanted to totally drain his macho image by a slumber there
But VM - just for rhyme's sake - pushed in a niththirai there : muththirai oththadam ittadhum thookkam vandhudumAm
(moonRAm piRai Poornam Viswanathan reminded here)

Re: Ilayaraja & Vairamuthu Combo - Checks & Balances (198 hits processed)
Just a sumAl modification to the same line, with the same niththirai, could have suited the "matter" very well and let me suggest that modification :
muththirai oththadam ittadhum (or itta pin) niththirai sukamE (or idhamE)
Here whatever meaning one takes for muththirai - simple kiss or the act itself - the niththirai won't take away the manliness...as in the case of existing lyric where the man is shown less potent - may be VM-IR combo deliberately mocked KBR

#44 sOlai pushpangaLE (oomai veyil & later in ingEyum oru gangai, GA-PS)
Another song that has Manivannan connection
I guess it's worth repeating the fact that this song was part of TWO different TF albums. First in oomai veyil and the disk cover got posted in our vinyl thread. That movie never got released but this song and another (vadakkuththeru vaNNakkiLi, another GA-PS duet) got very popular in south TN, thanks to SLBC (IOKS).
Manivannan had mentioned on a TV program that he often went to rAsA to grab "tunes rejected by other directors". In this case, he simply "purchased" a couple of existing songs and used them in his movie 'ingEyum oru gangai' (starring Murali / Dhara) that was quite successful at the BO.
If the first line of the song reminded people of a joke by Senthil, adhaRku nAn poRuppalla :)However, I need to highlight this nice aspect of Thamizh poem where thalaivan or thalaivi uses all kinds of objects to do "thoodhu" (communication). Here, the flowers of the garden are employed for communicating the sadness of lovers to each other - nice poetry in 'pAlaiththiNai' mode - despite freely using vadamozhi words such as pushpam / sOgam etc.
VM gets into his typical socialism mode in romantic song ("நீதி இல்லையா") that also served the purpose of rhyme (nAdhi-needhi) in the second saraNam It brings a smile out of me in each listen
Look at the lines :
Watch the sweet song, superbly crafted by rAsA...visuals by Manivannan :

Re: Ilayaraja & Vairamuthu Combo - Checks & Balances (198 hits processed)
Insignificant contribution by VM when rAsA reached one of his commercial peaks - the 1983 deepAvaLi :
#45 machchAnappAradi machchamuLLa ALudi (SJ/VJ, thangamagan)
This was an interesting moment, when three films - one each of the reigning biggie stars - got released on the same day and all three went on to become commerical successes.
AND, ALL HAD IR's MUSIC AND TOO MANY HIT SONGS!
HOWEVER, ONLY ONE SONG BY VM!
'veLLai rOjA' marked NT signing up IR once again, after not using him for 2+ years, because of the IR-TMS tiff. IMG, NT came down to help out Prabhu's career and agreed to the voice of MV as his playback (nagooru pakkaththula / dEvanin kOvililE yAvarum deepangaLE). The movie had NT in dual role, Prabhu, Suresh, Radha, Ambika and was a big success. (Crude remake of a Malayalam movie, BTW). NONE of the 4 hit songs were by VM. (The two MV numbers + 2 SPB-SJ duets O mAnE mAnE mAnE, sOlaippoovil mAlaiththenRal).
'thoongAthE thambi thoongAthE' had the second biggie success by AVM with Kamal / SPM / IR / PA / Vaali combo, after the prior year's SKV. Two Kamals, Radha, Sulakshana and 6 big hit songs (none by VM obviously).
'thanga magan' had Rajini having an unusual pair - Poornima Jayaraman (now Poornima Bagyaraj) who wasn't recognized as a "masAlA" actress until then. Well, she had all those shiny constumes, dance floor and such jiginA stuff in this movie - even had a duet with Anuradha (who was trying to replace silukku at this time)
Well, it is that female duet song - the least of the hit numbers in this Rajini movie - that VM got opportunity to write. Since those 'machchAn / machcham / Azham / neeLam' lyrics are not worthy to be explored in our esteemed forum, I'm not going to put effort to get pAdal varigaL here.
So why do I even post about it here? That too a long post?
Two reasons - #1 Accounting purpose but #2 is more important:
This post is also to record the fact that VM had nothing much to do in most IR-commercial-peaks, this being an example - even though this year was one of the top years by # of hits for IR & the IR-VM combo, VM had practically null in deepAvaLi!

#46 sirichchA kollimalaikkuyilu (Jothi, SPB-chAyA)
Back to another Manivannan song - allegedly his first-started-movie that got released after a few. SPB sang with a Kannada singer Chaya (possibly only hit TF song) and it got covered in the SPB-IR series
VM penned the romantic lines that express the love that blossomed in a female who was not favourably disposed towards the man at first but changed later on...(கல்லாக்கெடந்து பூவானா ரெண்டாந்தடவ ஆளானா shows she was rock-solid first but then softened).
Of course, filled with mOham / dhAgam / pAlooRal / thEn kudam etc as needed

#47 aLLi vachcha malligaiyE puLLi vachcha ponmayilE (inimai idhO idhO, PS / Krishnachandar)
Except for that 'புள்ளி வச்ச' part that I cannot understand (some DHVMFs please explain), it's a lovely number - full of beautiful imagery / uvamai / uruvagam / uyarvu naviRchi etc! The interesting part is most of them are quite unobtrusive - in Kannadasan style (e.g. தங்கம் நெறம் கருக்குமா? ) Of course, I don't know the astronomical answer for "நட்சத்திரம் நகருமா?", but from the standpoint of a human onlooker, those are obviously stationary
Lovely melody, sweetly sung by PS and fortunately, KC is not irritating in this number! Since our Doc has taken pains to upload this rare video on youtube, let us share the link here as well :
And here are the vaira varigaL:
Like most school students of TN in the 60's-70's, VM got exposure to a good amount of Biblical passages (like the sermon on the mount) and one can detect some influences here and there in his songs. (ஆகாயமும் இந்த மண்ணும் சாட்சியடி , யார் கேட்டது மனசாட்சி போதும் இனி - is a poetic expression of "swear not - neither by heaven nor by earth, but let your yes means yes and no means no", appropriately fitted into the context of marital vow here).
Yet another proof that VM could internalize what he got educated at school and express it in film songs (not just physical science as "தண்ணீரில் மூழ்காது" but also moral science )

#48 & #49 are two versions of the same song from maN vAsanai, the "another-come-back-movie-for-BR" in 1983, that launched Revathy (AshA kELuNNi the original name).
poththi vachcha malliga mottu (sugam SPB / SJ duet & sOgam SJ solo)!
Both my all-time-fav songs and the first one a cult classic among TFM's village songs (covered in the SPB-IR series
Let's look at the pAdal varigaL:
Quite rustic lyrics that beautifully sit on a nice melody! (Though I'm not a big fan of the meanings - for e.g. 'pEsippEsi rAsiyAnadhE' is a phrase used for peace after a fight and here it is used for a girl's mensuration yuck - typical VM-ism, like poovukkuL bhoogambam).
IR simply played around with orch, that can pizhinjify one's heart!

#50 manidhA manidhA iniyun vizhigaL sivandhAl ulagam vidiyum (KJY / kaN sivandhAl maN sivakkum)
Song well-known for terrific orch by rAsA! The one minute long prelude sets the terrific tone of what's coming!
Recently Drunkenmunk posted about this song (and the movie) in his blog and opined that the movie was a well-made one. As a person who was in college when it came out, I can confirm that it came and went without anyone noticing it. Even my 'rAsA padaththai kaNNai moodikkittE pAkkalAm' fanatic hostelmate possibly didn't get a chance to watch this. (At the minimum, he didn't drag me to theater )
By the time I was in college, the "revolt" "rebel" (and other related commie) thingies weren't my cup of chAya and accordingly such literature, movies, songs never incited great thrill in me.
kaN sivandhAl maN sivakkum, fine! Agreed! After that?
History has proved time and again that in course of time there was soon again need for one more 'kaN sivakkal' Violence had never been known to bring even temporarily-lasting solutions. That way, while I do have the same anger against ALL kinds of injustice and ALL kinds of inhuman acts, I don't subscribe to the prescribed reaction.
That way, any movie / song cannot incite "yAraiyAvadhu pOy udhaikkaNum" feeling inside me - even though sheer instrumental music can create "blood-boiling" effect at times :)But then, that's about it, it typically leads to deep meditation of "why" "what is the purpose of life" "how long such atrocities"...
Despite such differences in principle, I cannot help but admire the way in which words are weaved in this poem. Like 2040 ( @vforvadi ) replied to my sAmaram post on 'pon mAlaippozhudhu' - சாமரம் வீசிய பாமர ஜாதிகள் சாதனை கண்டு விடும், there are some lovely phrases that are "nach nach" in this song
Look at the lines:
Without question a peak in the VM career! Like I mentioned above, while I don't subscribe to the "solution" part, I definitely share very similar emotions / feelings on the existing conditions!

Re: Ilayaraja & Vairamuthu Combo - Checks & Balances (198 hits processed)
I have another 32 songs to cover in 1983 and by the end of that year, VM had 82 hits with rAsA music!
Tremendous record without question - but there had been 100's more during those years by IR with others in TFM & elsewhere. That has to be always kept in mind!

Re: Ilayaraja & Vairamuthu Combo - Checks & Balances (198 hits processed)
appji,
Yes, saw the film as I was doing 3 songs from it. I would place this as a precursor of sorts to Anbe Sivam, which imo seems to be a watered down version of KSMS (not fair comparing and definitely stupid to say AS copied KSMS, but this film does have an artist hero, feudal villain, communist theme, a streetplay poking fun at the villain and all).
This song, like Bala (Karthik) mentioned on twitter, is not at all lyrical or poetic with words sitting on the tune with a flourish. But certainly Vairamuthu's peak.
What a well played!
Btw, Plum and @sharankay mentioned 2 possible inspirations for the music of Manidha Manidha.
1. Salilda's fabulous Dheu uthche kara tutche (1946) for the India navy:
2. Ram Ganguli's Aag film's title score (1948):

Inspired?
Yes, without question Especially, the second youtube that you've posted!
Inspirational?
Not to me
(But perhaps to many others)
Nevertheless, enjoyable
