#89 adukku malli eduththu vandhu (SPB/SJ, AvArampoo)

We've earlier had 'sAmi kitta solli vachchu' from this same album. Now, it's time for another lovely SPB-SJ duet from this album to be showcased among the jewels by the very successful & illustrious IR-GA combo.

As in the case of many other SPB numbers we had in this thread, this too had its day in that series running for more than a year:)

Except one odd 'ஆனானய்யா பாஸா' phrase, which can be excused as a 90's folk , the song is filled with lovely countryside references, starting with its very first "adukku malli" phrase. It does take one instantly to a wedding setting in a remote village - even though the song may not have a literal wedding situation in the movie:) The imagery painted by the words invoke that kind of feel in one that he is among the festivities of a village marriage.

This song is a plum favourite and V_Sji has written a detailed post in the IR duets thread of the hub (link thEdikkaNdu pidikkaNum )

That album was an IR-celebration those days. He was the main attraction for the movie that otherwise had none / nothing big. And it made enough moolA in BO with just the name of IR & the songs! (They even had an "additional song" -oru manjakkuruvi en nenjaththazhuvi - after the release, to get some more people to the theater :lol:That was specifically highlighted in posters those days)

Oram pO, of course, was the most popular those days - even after AIR banning it from their broadcast (for what reason? It seemed an innocent pattikkAttAn song and couldn't understand what irritated them...that too was written by GA but got pushed out in preference of 'ooru vittu ooru vandhu' in our 100-list).

My most fav number of the album, however, was written by Panju Arunachalam - 'sAmakkOzhi Ey koovudhammA' -what a lovely, lovely IR-SPS duet! I can listen to it any number of times - alukkavE alukkAdhu!.

The 'unakkenaththAnE' song is a lovely composition that instantly brings a 70's nAttuppuRam to one's mind! Look at the youtube:

 appadiyE unga graamaththukkE pOnaapla irukku. Very touching and heart-felt post. This post is very precious than any technical analysis of Raja's songs. I will read it again and again. This is the true love for Raja's music, than anything else. Thoroughly enjoyed your experience, but we don't see these happening nowadays. 

When you said " ipadi ellam apo theiryadhu....... nalla iruku nu matum theiryum. kaetu iruken." you reflected most of our thoughts. We don't what it is, but somehow these songs has captured us for years. As you said, this part, the conversation "maadu ootaravarin pechu"

is the most captivating part. There is no fantasy here, it is so real and he describes exactly how it happens. These are things which listeners have been longing for, which took them directly to Raaja.

There had been many movies with their titles borrrowed from first line of hit songs (i.e. of other movies and not themselves...adhAvadhu, NOT 'nenjam maRappathilla'i kinds but the 'rAman eththanai rAmanadi' vagaiyaRA).

Many of IR-GA combo's hit songs too contributed to such movie titles (e.g. sheNbagamE sheNbagamE, ooru vittu ooru vandhu are some used by director GA himself )

#92 adhikAlai nEramE (meeNdum oru kAdhal kadhai, SPB-SJ)

Chokkan directed me in twitter to Kameshratnam who helped me find this vinyl that confirmed GA to be the lyricist for the classic. Thanks to popular vote, this song was selected as the #200 in the SPB-iR thread those days and earned a long post from me (also one of my fav posts in that series)...Instantly brings back to my mind that workplace / lake / birds / dawn!

I didn't say anything about the lyricist there - as in the case of many of the posts in that series. In a way, this "inclusive" approach by a longtime IRF (to the lyricists), is a "revival" phase  Thanks to the vinyls and these couple of threads, I'm posting / discussing a lot more on pAdal varikaL than all these years spent on the web. This is almost like the college days when we used to dissect the words / phrases and find multiple meanings / alternate suggestions etc. Variety of fun in life thru TFM!

So, in that spirit, here are the lines :

GA uses some of his keywords 'rAgam' 'AlAbanai' etc but maintains the breeziness overall, with no irritating words / thoughts interfere with the musical setting. Obviously, "not-irritating" is not necessarily a virtue always (lines could be bland) but GA maintained some curiosity in most cases to have some spice. Like the first line of first saraNam, is breezy sweet!

GA possibly got influenced by the melody that had some distant similarity to 'oru rAgam pAdalOdu' (look at the last line of the pallvi for both the songs, they sound very similar to me) and hence indulged in a similar theme IMG

#93 arumbAki mottAkip poovAki (DC/PS, enga ooru kAvakkAran)

Like V_Sji said and many others often remark, Ramarajan was a "lucky ph'lOw", to get those tons of gems from rAsA. Actually, as I explored in the SPB-IR series, rAsA made his "TFM folk V2" almost entirely for this actor

(Some features of this V2, IMHO : Not so heavy in WCM orchestration as in 'machchAnappAththeengaLA' aka V1 days; rode almost entirely on sweet melodies for both vocals & interludes; sweet use of flute / santoor kinds with violins playing not-so-bombastic role; large scale tablA and country drums on a limited scale; variety of female singers and less use of the dominant-SJ-power of V1)

enga ooru kAvakkAran was, of course, a PS special! She sounds so sweet in all the songs!

I've talked a lot about poovAyi in the SuseelAmmA thread and the 'Asaiyila pAththi katti' song got recalled in this GA thread too, as #81. Now, let us have this DC-PS number as well - where ammA's voice adds a lot of power & sweetness to the subdued way DC sings.

GA, who is a master in down-to-earth nAttuppuRappAttu (well, I won't hesitate to even call him numero uno in this genre), gets the words effortlessly fitted to a sweet melody, making one enjoy a leisurely walk, smelling flowers in a south TN thOttam! Obviously, poo / poovAyi / mAlai are the theme of the song and the "pookkavingar" is safe at his home territory

#94 nEththu oruththara oruththaru pAththOm (pudhuppAttu, IR/KSC)

One of my bachelor day delights - this joy ride of a duet by rAsA & chEchi! Little did I know then (and until a month ago) that the movie was directed by Panju Arunachalam, the lyricist / script writer who launched rAsA as the MD in annakkiLi. This was one of those grAmarAjan movies and well-left by me at the time of arrival.

A look at the video of this terrific hip song should convince people why they should stay away from such movies :



This is where one cannot help but appreciate rAsA's sincerity / commitment etc to his profession! Such totally undeserved team(s) were given seriously superb music - a hallmark of his dedication to the craft! Interestingly, in a number of such gifts, rAsA's brother had his share too, in shaping them up to fine products! Look at the catchy lines to this fast running, western-looped melody that goes on and on like a roller coaster :

The smoothness with which the words fall in place makes the song very refreshing and I never get bored listening to this number! Often on repeats even nowadays while driving A song that both brothers can really be proud of!

IR/SPB/SJ dream combo delivering loads of sweet to grAmarajan, with GA providing the transport service (both as lyric writer & director in this case)!

Fortunately, it's not just the actor who got to taste the sweet (if at all he is anymore in a position to relish that anyways) but the beneficieries include privileged souls like us :)I'm enjoying this number for decades now and it totally fits the catch phrase of nutrine confectionaries during yesteryears : "தின்னத்தின்னத் திகட்டாத மிட்டாய்"

May be to symbolize that mithAi part, our pasunEsan made it a point to wear mittAykkalar sattai in most of his duets and this one is no exception - please watch the youtube :

The sweet themmAngu melody of the pallavi shifts gears in the saraNam to get some ICM touch and GA uses the opportunity to place smooth phrases that matches the curves of the melody! (BTW, because the song had the benefit of SPB, there was prior coverage in the IR-SPB series as well)

BTW, this song often reminds me of the lone sandalwood tree in our aunt's thottam in father's village :)The villagers - despite most of them not literates - were aware of the fact that the tree didn't belong to them (despite being in their land) and used to inform visitors that "gov owns all sandalwood trees" - during my 70's school days. I used to watch the tree quite admiringly those days

Wonderful posts sir.   Especially the last three, my favorite Ramarajan film songs. Not even high-class albums gives the satisfaction that these songs give. There is so much sweetness in every such RR song that even a diabetic can consume how much they want, yet they won't see any rise in blood sugar and insulin levels, in fact it will keep them down and normal.

Yes, GA's later-day-uLaRals possibly kept him away from IR. Lack of tongue-control

If he had meant "references", he has to say in that manner. Not as "copy". That's nonsense.

rAsA himself talked about 'vA veNNilA' taking reference from 'vAn meedhilE', that too when working with MSV himself for MTK. This GA loudmouth now talks about rAsA "copying MSV".

On second thoughts, it may not be simply a case of tongue-slip....GA could have been paid to stir up such controversy :wondering:

Has he ever made fun of ARR, for "copying" MSV?

This is more of a "lack-of-kadivALam-to-nAkku" and not for money. (Obviously, GA broods about this all the time and thus his  mouth blurts out...but he is not paid for that, so I withdraw my speculation).

While one won't question his conclusion - that everyone learns from previous gen / has references etc - his vishamaththanam "only me and aNNan know / won't tell you" etc requires condemnation!

He should be man enough to say what song was referred to compose what song.

Despite the "set back" caused to our IR-GA exercise (that lousy loose talk by GA in a function), since I'm close to completing the thread objective anyways, let me finish the 100 posts' exercise

#96 Adum nEram idhu dhAn idhu dhAN (soora samhAram, PS)

Though PS sings the pallavi so sweet, for some reason rAsA had chosen to have the saraNams sung entirely by chorus girls. That was quite unique about this song - no lead singer doing saraNam at all! (I can't 100% vouch for it though, PS could have been singing along as well. Just that I can't spot her voice at all!).

Another favourite song of my bachelor days - don't remember how many times I would have heard it on walkman! rAsA gifted such a futuristic number for a dud movie (Kamal-Nirosha flop) about which GA happily announces on that speech that he wrote all songs (incorrect statement, the vEdhALam number is credited to rAsA as per our tracks DB)...

In any case, this song situation is one where a bunch of females get into drugs - GA was deemed best qualified to write the poem ;)Let's look at the lines :
