When did Amaran turn lyricist?

“Before Ilaiyaraaja began to play on the harmonium. Originally He he used to create tunes for lines of popular songs. That was when I would give him my lyrics and suggest that he compose music for them. Thus we stored a lot of compositions in our mind and drew from them when required.” Amaran wrote the popular song, ‘Vaigaraiyil Vaigai Karaiyil,’ when he was just 14 and ‘Andhapurathil Oru Maharani,’ at 15! “As I talk to you I wonder, ‘was it I who wrote them?’”

This lyricist of nearly 500 Ilaiyaraaja films, which translates into around 1,200 songs, besides songs for other musicians, and composer for nearly 200 films, which include all-time hits such as, Kamal Haasan’s Vazhvey Maayam, is modest about his achievements.

Renamed the thread to show my irritation towards Amar taking an anti-IR side (even for fun, how can a thambi do such nonsense on such a sensitive topic? First of all, how can IR be compared with a person having < 1% of his talent?)

Anyways, this is apt due to a few reasons :

As a member of the ruling political party of central gov / censor board / award committee etc., GA definitely has the right to criticize IR's decision (not to accept the award) and also defend their post-2010 award structure of "separate for songs & OST".

However, getting into mudslinging like "not mahAn" "not appreciating next gen" "recycled tune cannot be awarded" etc are totally unwarranted in this conversation. Those are outright irresponsible uLaRals.

Totally agreed. However, what is in play here is the media turning a house fire into a Fort Mac. Now that you think GA has the right to speak like this, let me give you some background. Before that, though I have researched Raja's music for years, I do not share his opinion about how these awards must be given.

In 2011, the award was created for BGMs in India and Raja won it for Pazhassi Raja (Malayalam). However, Raja did not accept that award by going to Delhi. It was delivered to him He was of the same opinion then and now - he is consistent. Ousepechchan won the award in 2011, if I remember correctly. That is what I mean by 'right to his opinion'.

Raja did not say that anything is wrong with M.Jayachandran getting the award. He just voiced his opinion and also cemented this by writing a letter to the I&B ministry.

When the govt gave him the Padma Bhushan, he had no issues accepting it and when the same I&B Ministry gave him the award for lifetime achievement in music award, he had no issues. He has an issue with this method of awarding in two categories.  He has a right to voice his opinion as he is an affected party.

See how GA falls into the media play. I would have respected his views had he stuck to only the awards issue. He goes on a personal attack on his brother which is outside the issue. He throws his own interpretation of why Raja said what he said - this is the stupid mindset, where he gives in to his emotions. Raja did not say that young people should not be awarded or Jayachandran does not deserve it. Those were GA's words. He went on to criticizing TT's music which was not the point at all.

GA suffers from insomnia as he does not seem to remember his own brother's stand from 2011. Also, in a previous interview to the same media, he said that 'Kaatril Varum Geethame' and NEPV were the only worthwhile songs of Raja in the last 16 years.

You can hate Raja to the core, but you will find that GA has a personal agenda here and not any true musical one...
