Panju Arunachalam - IR's first lyricist & satellite launcher :)

Panju Arunachalam, a very important personality in the initial years of IR - especially in getting his first chance, is also a competent lyricist. He is related to Kannadasan and kavingar can be called PA's mentor.

All the songs of rAsA's first film, annakkiLi, are credited to PA. Obviously there were references & "usage" of some existing folk songs but PA helped put them together in the film song format IMHO.

This thread can be used to catalog the hit songs these two had together. It must be a decent size number, going by the vinyl covers at musicalaya.net...

All the four songs (well, five if we include TMS pathos version of annakkiLi) were huge hits and the album broke existing records in TFM sales.

And the lyricist is Panju Arunachalam, who wrote such classics as 'ponnezhil pooththadhu pudhu vAnil' with mellisai mannar prior. (Movie : kalangarai viLakkam *ing MGR).

#3 suththachchambA pachcha nellu (SJ) - ditto comments

#4 sondhamillai bandhamillai vAdudhu oru paRavai (PS) - must be a PA original, typical 70's style film lyrics...(akkakkA enum geetham, adhu dhAnE adhan vEdham)

-The pallavi lines are so popular, I guess movie titles are made out of them Smile

While my primary appreciation for PA is for launching rAsA, this article had just amazed me that he provided such a wonderful environment for family members to show interest in Thamizh!

Often, we tend to focus on negatives only (stole some verses penned by Kavingar, tried to snatch away a movie opportunity while Kavingar was off, put his name as lyricist for folk verses brought by Pavalar brothers, disastrous debut as director of pudhuppAttu etc) but do not give this man due credit.

After all, someone who wrote 'பொன்னெழில் பூத்தது புது வானில்' in kalangarai viLakkam cannot and should not be so easily dismissed!

Now, this article gives one more reason to admire the man! All said & done about his so-called-saNdai with Kavingar during gauravam days, there seems to be no long-term tiff between them. His offspring is even wedded to Kavingar's offspring and the Thamizh connection is even more than that!

Let me say PA-kku innum oru "வாழ்க!"
