Gangai Amaran - excellent lyricist for IR - 100 special picks of this combo
During the recent NEPV launch function, if one person was really missed by me, it was Gangai Amaran enRa Amar Singh, younger brother of rAsA. When relatively not-so-great-contibutors-to-rAsA-music were asked for their fav song, this director - who got such gems as EdhO mOgam, sheNbagamE & mAnguyilE from IR didn't find favor with Gautam.
Not just there, he had not been given due honor anywhere on the net it appears
Look at his wikipedia page, which is quite pathetic!
I don't remember myself posting many nice things about this talented guy, among my 1000's of indulgences at tfmpage and elsewhere Neither do I read nice things about him that often on the net!
I don't know why such treatment to such a talented artist, that too the younger bro of maestro May be he talked too much on occasions that irritated some IRFs...or, there had been some issue between brothers that pushed him out of the limelight...or, while his not-so-great lyrics were easily attached to his name, his really nice ones (and hits) weren't clearly credited to him by masses (and thus robbed him of the deserved recognition)...
Whatever, after learning last evening that 'putham puthukkAlai' was by him, there was a sudden pang of guilt within me and I've decided to do some parihAram / prAyaschiththam!
That's why this thread
I'm resolved to post AT LEAST 100 medium sized posts on this guy here!
Appreciating this multi-faceted talent, the தம்பி தங்கக்கம்பி of rAsA!

Re: Gangai Amaran - excellent lyricist for IR - 100 special picks of this combo
App,
This is excellent. Definitely you brought forward one of the most deserved person and talent in TFI. As you said, it is embarrassing on why we have not talked much about him, except when finding answers on who was the lyricist for a particular song and then left him aside. You are doing a marvelous job and this thread should be a great tribute to his amazing talent!

Re: Gangai Amaran - excellent lyricist for IR - 100 special picks of this combo
Those were the days when the saying 'தம்பி உடையான் படைக்கஞ்சான்' was applicable to rAsA. (I don't know the origins of this pazha mozhi but a quick browsing shows that both AththikarkaL & nAththikarkaL have happily embraced this pazhanchol While the former group applies this to Ram-Lakshman, one of the known members of the latter group - K Veeramani - too happily uses it in one of his appeals to DMK Also, one can hear this frequently used among 'udan piRappukaL'.)
Well, during their struggling days in Madras, i.e. prior to IR hitting it big, the three brothers were close together and engaged in various forms of musical work as one can read from the variety of accounts about IR. After annakkiLi, GA was perhaps serving as some kind of assistant / instrument player in the IR gang , while having the song-writing fire inside.
Once GA's film-song-writing ability got clearly identified, opportunities started to flow and hit songs abounded. That was the skillset that brought him fame initially. So, while GA had definite success also as a film director & music director, our initial focus on him will be as a lyricist.
I would like to initially highlight some nice songs - that people often do not associate with him due to the general mindset that he was a dappAnguththu pAdalAsiriyar
Opening with my find of yesterday -
All along I thought that this was by VM and never bothered to check the credits in authentic places. Actually a number of websites too credit this song to VM. That VM opened with pon mAlaippozhudhu in nizhalkaL perhaps influenced my thoughts that he complemented it with puthukkAlai. Well, now we know who is TFM's morning star
Simple but very sweet lines! IR should have been mighty impressed that he chose to give terrific orchestration! (Per IR's rhythm section in-charge, Puru, there was some rush & struggle at customs to get the then-latest-imported-drum-tool that got used in this movie...that new toy generated some sounds we enjoy in this number).
SJ gave some lovely expressions in this song, making one feel the chilly morning breeze caressing the face! Though BR couldn't place it on-screen, the song had become an evergreen classic in the minds of TFM lovers!

Per Jaya TV program, this number was composed for a Mahendran movie (called marudhANi) and BR borrowed it...KSC singing that number was on youtube and posted when the thread got opened, however that link is no longer active
However, since the song got featured in a new movie 'mEghA' and the youtube got over 10 million hits (as of June 2016), let me include that link here:

Definitely one song that GA can always be proud of!

Re: Gangai Amaran - excellent lyricist for IR - 100 special picks of this combo
An active thread for GA was long overdue and its nice to see a new one for him.
I used to feel this talented guy did not take himself so seriously and this hypocrisy filled industry also took him light after the tides turned in the 90's. Couple of years back during the Vaalee felicitation, Vaalee remarked about GA , " engeyO poirukka vEndiyavan edhulayum theeviram illAdhadhu nAlla thaan ippidi...."

Re: Gangai Amaran - excellent lyricist for IR - 100 special picks of this combo
Well done. He deserves it. Yes his focus was off but i have a soft spot for him. T.Rajendar is another guy I have softer spot for.
Who can forgot Senthoora Poove? That changed the industry commercially? He predates VM with infusing new words in lyrics although he followed the basic style of KD and Vaali. He also supposedly wrote Mannil Indha Kadhalandri but credited to his elder bro as a homage/respect?
Coming to "Putham puthukkAlai", it is one of my all time fav.
And my fav lines...
And...
(Such a beautiful line! In someways I wish the words weren't split the way it is in the song.)

Re: Gangai Amaran - excellent lyricist for IR - 100 special picks of this combo
We often hear on-screen dialogs where characters mention celebrities (like Raja / Rahman / Kannadasan / Vairamuthu). Deservingly so in many cases, especially when done in correct dosage. Obviously, there're also cases of overdose - during late 80's, there was too much of rAsA-pugazh by characters on screen. Like that, after the reincarnation of VM with the advent of ARR, too much usage of VM-name too (by the likes of Vivek - 'coat-suit pOtta Vairamuthu', he calls Rajini in Sivaji). A recent case of mild-overdose of rAsA name is in NEPV (including some promotional videos) - of which the reference by Jeeva in the bus in the middle of 'ennOdu vA vA' song was quite irritating to me.
Well, either way, this poor kavingar GA - who gave so many hits, never had such mention of him - despite having a successful director as his son avaru wikipedia irukka latchanam pArththAlE theriyudhu how much Venkatprabhu & Premji boys care for their dad & his name on the net! (Well, after our thread runs to 100 posts or more, we'll request our regularly-tweeting friends to tweet those fellows to look at this izhai...not now )
There was this huge hit a few years back, Subramaniyapuram, that had retro-sets, scenes, Madurai situations etc and one IR song got played almost in toto! The song, 'siRu ponmaNi asaiyum', was only mildly popular at the time of arrival - few radio broadcasts, few tea shop listens etc. OTOH, the re-invention got phenomenal amount of TV-time and got a lot talked about! One can even say that it started a new trend - of having some IR song or other in every new movie! That is, until rAsA stopped it by invoking some copyright bayamuRuththal (unnecessarily, IMHO, as either way he isn't getting any revenue out of those songs...the illegal usage at least kept reminding people how awesome his songs were / are, ippO adhuvum pOchchu)! I wish the gov pays some huge sum to IR and makes all his songs (i.e. until now) as 'nAttudamai'!
Well, 'siRu ponmaNi' in subramani, apart from reviving the nostalgia, also suited the situation very well - as the pallavi lines refer to the precious body part - EYES - and the song on-screen too had the heroini's eyes in the primary focus
enna irundhu, enna prayOjanam? Was there any mention of our thread nAyakan on-screen, when his precious lines got played? No! pOgattum, at least did majority of people know that it was penned by him? I don't think so - it's known only to very few people IMHO - like some tfmpage regulars. I won't be surprised a bit if some blogger talks about how VM cleverly brings his wife's name in the song etc (even though we know he hadn't entered the field yet )...
What a beauty of a song! GA being also a musical, perfectly fits the words to his brother's awesome melody - making it unnecessary to stretch syllables. No use of irritating & inappropriate adukkuththodarkaL (compare with the poopy 'pooppoovAy pooppoovAy' in that awesome munbE vA song).
thiraippAdal link of the song (lovely singing by IR-SJ and awesome prelude / interludes & terrific custom percussion + bass loop as background) :

Let's enjoy the lovely construction of words :

The more enjoyable (IMO) version, from the Sasikumar movie:

Re: Gangai Amaran - excellent lyricist for IR - 100 special picks of this combo
Fantastic and much needed thread App. Respect grows multi-fold for GA after knowing his lyrical contributions for some evergreen IR songs. I usually don't pay much attention to lyrics as I'm usually immersed in IR's tunes or orchestration or the singers' renditions. Inspite of all that, I have admired the lyrics of Putham Puthu kaalai and to know that its penned by GA makes me want to keep note of the lyrics of his other songs as well.

Re: Gangai Amaran - excellent lyricist for IR - 100 special picks of this combo
app, just saw this thread. vEnum, vEnum, innum vEnum...
Most of us just remember him as emcee/jester. He is funny, yes, but he is also a competent director/composer/lyricisit. Multiple talented-man. And if am not mistaken, it was him who recommended his brother to Barathi/Vasu (the then assistants of mighty MSV-loyalist Sridhar) for Ilamai OonjalAdugirathu.
He is just happy to be in the shadow of his much more successful brother. I recall back in late 80s when IR was doing concert in Singapore. Watched it on TV, and GA, who was also the emcee, after singing PoojakEtra poovithu, kidded with the audience, asking if they liked the singing. After great applause, he said (paraphrasing), "Innum avarkitta enakku athikamA chance kodukka sollungga!", and crowd went wild with laughter.
I don't know what tiff he had with IR, but he seemed to be always in awe of his brother, maybe that what made him stay where he was when he too could have gone places. Not near his brother, but at least ahead of the other bloody pretenders. Or maybe, he just had too many interests, to focus on one.

I think this was only to his songs being used as part of the soundtrack itself. Like the rework of Aaasai Nooru Vagai in an RGV film. Even in the latest film I saw NKPK, half of edhO mOgam was played. Actually this is one of the reasons I see almost all films of this 'new wave' thamizh directors. And more often than not these Raaja songs get better videos
Anyway great thread. Sorry for the disturbance.

Who can forgot Senthoora Poove? That changed the industry commercially? He predates VM with infusing new words in lyrics although he followed the basic style of KD and Vaali. He also supposedly wrote Mannil Indha Kadhalandri but credited to his elder bro as a homage/respect?
Coming to "Putham puthukkAlai", it is one of my all time fav.

nanRi V_Sji, mythila, SenthilVinu, rajkumarc, groucho & Nerd for the support to the thread and comments!
That's good to know
I probably read the news reports wrong (or they themselves reported wrongly that any use of IR songs on-screen without prior permission will call for legal action)...
No, no, not at all!
Actually, variety of PoV - especially, difference in opinion - makes this thread (and life itself) lively and more interesting!
Please keep sharing karuththoos without fail

Re: Gangai Amaran - excellent lyricist for IR - 100 special picks of this combo
Well, as we progress in this thread, I expect my "whining" mode to slowly go away - not because the required recognition for GA is achieved by our mere efforts ; but, at the minimum, my own guilt-feel will go away
In addition, during our treasure hunt, we would have possibly understood that there had been some recognition or appreciation for GA in the past.
Like the album cover of kallukkuL eeram This has got posted on the 'vinyl cover' thread but to highlight what friends (and brother) of GA had done in the past to get him some recognition, let me re-host it here:
As one can see from this cover, GA's pic is in the center(stage), happily hosted there by his friend BR and aNNan IR...so, they both had given him necessary amount of publicity, recognition, access to media etc when the group made it big @TF.
The picture also brings to our mind the fact that GA got opportunity to write ALL songs for films those days Not some unknown films but those that had the tag of the then-biggest-director-in-the-field! Of course, he did a decent job of all the songs but 'siRu ponmaNi' is obviously the best!
I'll be posting the lyrics for the other three songs one by one - all decent ones and not 'dappAnguththoos' that one would typically associate with this kavingar. I won't blA-blA as to how they're good etc as they'll speak for themselves:)
Songs that celebrated nAttuppuRa maNam, iyaRkai azhagu, manitha manadhin arumaiyAna uNarvukaL, uRavukaLin iniya tharuNangaL...
Here comes cilantro lyrics:

Re: Gangai Amaran - excellent lyricist for IR - 100 special picks of this combo
Great thread on Amar. He is popularly called as "Poo Kavignar" in film circuits, as he mentions lot of flower names in his songs right from his early day songs "senthoora poove", "poovarasam poo puthaachchu", "Sevvanthi Poo Mudicha", "Poongathavey" and many more. I believe he has written most number of the songs for IR albums next to vaali. But some how we always think of IR and Vairamuthu the only combo as peak of 80's.
I think Illaiyaraaja and Gangai Amaran combo has outstanding numbers in all moods and all seasons. Apart from above mentioned songs, below are few more samples from the big list.
1. Kodai kala kaathae - panner pushpangal
2. Ananda raagam - panner pushpangal
3. Shenbagamae Shenbagamae - Enga orru Paatukaran
4. Oru Kili Uruguthu - Aananda Kummi
5. Intha Maan - Karagattakaran.

nanRi olichudar for the appreciation and the pointers to some of GA's nice songs!
As we continue discussing in detail about this versatile talent here, hopefully some respect is restored to him (if not gained afresh)!

Re: Gangai Amaran - excellent lyricist for IR - 100 special picks of this combo
As I mentioned before, all the four songs of kallukkuL eeram can be classified under the "decent, nice" category. The last one, 'eNNaththil EdhO sillenRadhu' pallavi was somewhat novel for that time period IMHO, because it had only 3 phrases which is an odd number (and the first phrase gets repeated as the 4th, to get even)...
Anyways, here are the lines (both this song and thOppiloru are hard to find on the web...while I could do "copy / paste / listen and correct" for the other two songs, I had to freshly type out these two numbers )
thiraippAdal:

With just two movies (alaigaL Oyvathillai & kallukkuL eeram, both with BR tags), we've already got 5 beautiful hit songs by GA. If this many hits had been done by ANY lyricist in his whole career in the 90's or the new millennium, he would have already got some titles & awards
Well, we'll probably score a century in this thread (may be more) and then move on to his other talents!

Re: Gangai Amaran - excellent lyricist for IR - 100 special picks of this combo
The next song and album that I want to highlight here is something NO ONE would associate with nAttuppuRam & dappAnguththu (and, by extension, never with GA)...
It was one of the most modern scores for the year 1980! And, a top hit song from the album got featured in a popular "peter" movie in the new millennium! Needless to say it got featured in the IR-JayaTV music show as well!
Well, before featuring that stupendous GA song, let's focus on the other number from the same album first! A short 3 min song, with considerable duration taken up by instrumental & humming portions - thus leaving very less room for poem. Still, GA provides some refreshing & stylish lines:

The words 'paLingu' & 'paruvam' obviouly takes one to the LRE hit song. Interestingly, while both these songs do not refer to the literal 'paLingu' but only use it as a simile / metaphor for other "things", my mind always recall glass / crystal / marble / glazed tile kind of construction materials that my b-i-ls deal with. It's always a fascinating topic for me. (When a supplier took me for dinner to the Leela hotel in Mumbai, we talked about the Italian marble that decorated the building more than other things).
This was the conversation with my big boss when he came to my Palakkad house-warming in '95 :
"Hey, nice tile work & kadappA/marble work - who is your contractor? Was it yOhannAn?" (the top guy in that town)
"Oh, I can never afford him...since the local group that I used for the project didn't have the skills, I requested my b-i-l and he sent a few boys from Trichy...they finished it in a couple of days"
He got impressed and told the project manager for the new factory building to get the boys thru me (It was a big project, a building of 3 floors with each floor > 60K sqft and considerable area -1000s of sqft - with tiles / marbles etc).
My b-i-l sent the main boy who started his work at the site a few miles from our home and he was provided accommodation at the site.
After a week or so, I casually asked the project manager (who lived in my sub-division / colony and a colleague too) : "Is the guy meeting your expectations? Are you satisfied with the speed / quality of the work?
"The work is terrific - super fast and high quality! There's just one minor issue" (He did a namuttuch chirippu and I got confused)
"The fellow lived in the site only for a couple of days...now he started kudumbam nadaththifying with a malayALi siththAL and is living with her"
I got surprised at the efficiency of that fellow, a little amused, but was obliged to inform my b-i-l.
When my b-i-l communicated to the boy's family, however, it reportedly created a tremor / boogambam / tsumani / puyal etc in their family as he was already engaged, muRaippoNNu, expected to marry shortly etc...They wanted him report back the very next day it seems.
Well, fortunately, no more drama occured...he completed the project, and somehow amicably closed the relationship too and escaped...unlike Viv Richards Neena Gupta, this couple didn't make a baby, so one less complication.
Anytime marble / glazed tile etc becomes a topic of thought, my mind does an auto-recall of that guy and I cannot avoid the amusement
GA's lines are definitely great poem, because என் "நெஞ்சில் பளிங்கு போல வந்த நினைவு" happened to be the "பருவ காலங்களின் கனவு" of that tile worker!

Re: Gangai Amaran - excellent lyricist for IR - 100 special picks of this combo
Continuing with moodupani, I was impressed to see GA's pic on the album cover (much like the kallukuL eeram one, posted in the vinyl album thread)!
I don't remember associating that album with GA at any point of time even though 'en iniya pon nilAvE' is among my all-time-top-IR-favourites.
That song obviously does not need any introduction / references / links / write-ups etc., being (most probably) precious to every IRF.
Makes me work less It's just sufficient that I do this "koovikkoovi viRkal" that Gangai Amaran wrote the lines for this all-time-famous classic!
Here are those lines for this guitar beauty, for quick ref:
Though the song is of romantic genre, look at how words sweetly include the beauty of nature!
More power to GA as a worthy competition to VM for iyaRkai azhagu songs...

Re: Gangai Amaran - excellent lyricist for IR - 100 special picks of this combo
We've seen a few samples that should have already dispelled the myth that GA wrote only dappAnguththu songs (or nAttuppuRa songs). Obviously, there are a lot more to be showcased on this thread...let's continue to collect them.
Meanwhile, a small gear-shift.
The samples that appeared so far happened to be all romantic / natural beauty /pleasant but not highly emotional kinds. Let me quickly list them :
-putham puthukkAlai
-siRu ponmaNi asaiyum
-kothamallippoovE
-thOppiloru nAdakam nadakkudhu
-eNNaththil EdhO sillenRadhu
-paruva kAlangaLin kanavu
-en iniya pon nilAvE
Has he done some pathos kind of emotional stuff? Not just for name's sake - something quite competently and one that went on to become popular, lingering in the minds of people for a long time?
'vaigaRaiyil vaigai karaiyil' song of payaNangaL mudivadhillai comes to mind!
The song happens to be the last number in the movie, close to its ending, in a serious situation. With all those heavy pathos music (shehnAi / strings etc), the lines were expected to be weighty enough. That is, those should not water down the situation or make people laugh at them - as in the case of some recent "serious songs" (e.g. EzhAm aRivu)...
Needless to say, GA managed to live up to the requirements. Let us look at the lines now:

Perhaps one of the best pathos songs in SPB's voice...(IR's music sounds like a temple bhajan in part but the strings bring the movie mood aptly!)

Re: Gangai Amaran - excellent lyricist for IR - 100 special picks of this combo
app, this one or that coughing song the last in the movie? I think its the latter. (We use to make fun of the blood cancer back then, when Kamal also appeared as a victim that year). But now, as adult, jeez man, what a condition to be in....Mom said she can't watch both movies now without getting depressed.

'maNiyOsai kEttu ezhundhu' (the coughing song) is when the heroine first learns that the hero is "avoiding" her. (She typically accompanied him to studio for his prior assignments but this one without her ; she rushes to find out why but he is cold to her). In a way, it's the "break-up" song
'vaigaraiyil' comes many scenes later.

Re: Gangai Amaran - excellent lyricist for IR - 100 special picks of this combo
Let's continue with one more "pathos" number written by GA. This came a year before that vaigaRaiyil number of PM.
adhAvadhu, from the 100th movie of Kamal - rAja pArvai!
Since the movie was about an artist who could not see (and thus the poetic title for the movie), there had to be some references to vizhi. At least that was my expectation in the song lines. Without disappointing such enthusiasts, the Kamal-IR combo included a song that started with vizhi
(Well, for simplicity's sake, I placed only the name of Kamal the hero, producer and singer of the song. sangeetham paththina discussionla Singeetham pEr pOdalainnu yArum kOchchukkAdheenga. )
I don't remember associating GA clearly with that song. Well, the magazines were going so much gAgA with andhi mazhai and the latest sensation Vairamuthu that they clearly ignored the lyricists of the other two songs. Listeners didn't care much either. However, rAsA did his job with the music companies properly and one can see the pictures of both kavingar and GA in the cover of the vinyl that had 'azhagE azhagu' & 'vizhiyOraththukkanavum'
The lines are quite decent (and the solo-violin-dominated orch & emotional singing by Sasireka / Kamal gets the song the required appeal of "unarchchivasam"):

Great..for doing justice to GA's skills. I think he is a fantastic lyricist. Wish IR lets him write now for him. Let bygones be bygones. Hope brothers will be brothers again.
