Vinyl ("LP" record) covers speak about IR (Pictures & Details) - Thamizh

Fantastic effort App and thanks for providing various facts about the movies. Feels nice to have a collection of all these rare album artworks. Naalai Unadhu Naal has one of my favorite spooky songs of IR - Koodu Thedi. For some reason I keep swapping this one with the Vetta Veli from Nalla Naal. Both are great songs in the spookiness genre.

This year 1984 had so many movies Our man was pretty consistent providing two or more hits for every movie! Absolutely no discriminiation!

Look at this movie 'niyAyam' that no one possibly remembers today. (Even the first lines of the songs didn't ring me a bell and I had to listen to them at thiraippAdal to get that 'Oh idhu andhappAttA' exclamation for each of them!)

Prabhu-Nalini starrer...both gangai nadhi (Dasettan) and karudhu kAththadudhu (MV) are terrific songs!

Didn't I say Thiyagarajan was a hot cake post mambattiyAn?

Here's another from his "peak" year - "neruppukkuL eeram".

IR gave the terrific song 'kaNNil onRu kaNdEn', MV-SJ duet! (Pallavi tune sounds a little similar to 'kalyANam vaibOgam' of nAn mahAn alla). There was another 'thaniyA thavichchirundhEn' MV-SJ duet that was regular on radio as well

AVM had Karthik acting in 'nalla thambi'. (I always get reminded of N S Krishnan's nalla thambi, my appA had that vinyl played at home quite often - 'kudichchuppazhagaNum' song immediately rings in my mind - NSK / Madhuram).

Average songs by IR standards, 'Atti vachchA Ada vENum mAmA' & 'kalyANa poNNirukku', both MV duets, had some radio time those days...

nEram nalla nEram - en anbE EngAdhE en nenjam thAngAdhE & pavaLa maNiththEr mElE were sporadically on radio.

However, the song that got played frequently in the hostel player (and heard in buses at times) was the SJ mukkal munakal number "kattil pAttonnu pAdu, retta thAppALa pOdu" which is not listed in this vinyl cover (thiraippAdal has it)

Now, a special album - that had two lovely SPB-SJ duets - 'rOjA onRu uLLangaiyyil pooththadhu' and 'O dEvan kOyil veeNai'. The former definitely had some "reference" from the corresponding RD Burman song from Julie - the Hindi remake of of the MY original chattakkAri that finally got remade as 'O mAnE mAnE' in Thamizh

The movie was a terrible flop - despite the hugely successful original & hindi remakes, the then popularity of Oorvashi, nice songs and special promotion thanks to Kamal singing for Mohan (pon mAnai thEdudhE)...

It appears to be an original Thamizh movie (Rajesh on the picture) and all songs got penned by VM...possibly a communist themed movie, and quite a few hit TF screens those days (sivappu malli, kaN sivandhAl maN sivakkum for e.g.)...

To start 1985, let us give first & special respect to one important film..."mudhal mariyAdhai".

The IR-BR-VM combo film that had NT in the main role on-screen.

Per this post by Murali Srinivas sir in the SPB-IR thread , three hit movies with IR music got released just around the same period in this year

First one, with rAsA as the main star - udhaya geetham

As discussed in the SPB-IR thread (all songs by SPB), different lyric writer for each song but still most wanted to have mAnE thEnE words (No GA there )

The second one with Kamal-Ambika dancing as MGR-Jayalalitha for 'pattukkannam thottukkoLLa ottikkoLLum' in a Sathya movies' film - kAkki chattai

Then we had a rare combination of Rajini with KBR (directed by Vijay's daddy) - nAn sigappu manithan.

Maniratnam made his debut in TF this year - with pagal nilavu (Revathy / Murali / Sathyaraj). His pic did make it to the disc cover Interesting to see that GA wrote all the songs!

Maniratnam also did his TF #2 in the same year, for Motherland Pictures (Kovaiththambi the producer, "Ilayarajavin innisaiyil" posterwAlA)

Fazil made his entry into TF world as well in this same year (of mudhal mariyAdhai, sindhu bhairavi, udhayageetham, kAkki chattai, idhayakkOyil, pagal nilavu...thalai suRRal)

poovE poochchooda vA - "pAttikkum pEththikkum nadakkum pAsappOrAttam" thus advertised vividh bhArathi station those days! There were frequent radio ads for few seconds, with the first two lines of title song played followed by this caption - that created decent expectation for the movie (that exceeded all expecations, IMHO)!

Kamal did many movies this year in Thamizh, kind of "coming back" after some extra focus in Hindi.

We've already seen the vinyl pic of kAkki chattai, which was a big hit. Out of the other four movies, three didn't have great run & we'll look at those covers before posting the fourth one which was a big hit.

uyarndha uLLam (Ambika, AVM, engE en jeevanE & kAlaiththenRal were lovely, both written by VM - the other so-so numbers came from Valee)...

andha oru nimidam (by Major, possibly a benefit-match by Kamal, had Oorvashi for that lovely 'siRiya paRavai siRakai virikka' song which was the one bright spot in a horrible film...had two other lovely songs in the album - alaikaLil midhakkudhu & thEvai indhappAvai)

Part 2 of kalyANa rAman (in Japan, expo trip it seems) - movies like this  possibly showed why Radhas could not be Sridevees...

The 'chipmunk' sound in this album (rAdhE en rAdhE) was possibly the first for TFM...

OK, we've covered those three duds.

Now the impressive one - (oru) kaidhiyin diary! This was hit as well as critically acclaimed those days!

The vinyl cover shows the originally registered name, without the "oru". On the movie posters (and the DVD), it was the revised name. This was a BR-KBR combo film after their "re-union". (In-between, there were some not-so-nice relationship between them as reported in the media). KBR remade this in Hindi with AB / Jayapradha / Sridevi and that too was a hit. (Akhree rAsthA, music L-P)

To me the best part of this movie was the flashback (when appA Kamal is young  - From Radha romance to jail, the whole thing was fabulous)! The old-Kamal was ok but I wasn't terribly impressed, except for his scenes with Revathy. Son Kamal was definitely fun but gets only third rank.

Average songs by IR-BR combo standards but both duets looked nice on screen!

Vairamuthu had the terrific 'vEppilai karuvEppilai adhu yArO nAn dhAnO' (oorath therinjukkittEn)

Rajini did two other movies in 1985 with rAsA music. (Besides these he did 'nAn adimai illai' with MD from neighboring state).

Balu Mahendra directed 'un kaNNil neer vazhindhAl' that had the sweet 'kaNNil enna kAr kAlam' SPB-SJ duet! It had 'enna dEsamO' by KJY too. A fun song by MV that had comical version of older songs (iLamai idhO idhO, Ey AthA etc) too finds a place in the disk...SJ had this 'malarE malarE ullAsam' too!

Advertised as Rajini's 100th film was 'Sri Raghavendrar' (produced by kavithalayam). Directed by SPM who had been doing masAlA (or remake) movies for the most part of his career - though he had movies like mOgam muppadhu varusham / BhuvanA oru ? during his initial years. This movie was probably a gear shift for him in the middle of 80's...

BTW, it seems recently (i.e. in the NJ concert) rAsA highlighted the lift of a song from this album by a western band...well, that lift got discussed a few times in the tfmpage much earlier, so most such news / titbits coming out nowadays would seen "old" to longtime DF-ers

In that year, hit songs from rAsA were coming as a deluge!

Let's get the vinyl covers of two more albums today...

thenRalE ennaiththodu - songs that are fondly remembered even today were instant hits when the movie trailer was shown in theaters (disk wasn't yet released)! From the cover, one can see that 'thenRal vandhu ennaiththodum' sweetie was written by VM while all others by Valee (the kaNmaNi nee vara, pudhiya poovidhu, kavidhai pAdu kuyilE, ennAnga mAppiLLai & EmmA andhi mayakkamA).

Sridhar's venture was a big success at BO (probably his last hit) but the movie was intolerable to me (and the student gang that watched together)!
