Re: Vinyl ("LP" record) covers speak about IR (Pictures & Details) - Thamizh
After a few failures (tik-tik-tik, kAdhal Oviyam, vAlibamE vA vA), Bharathiraja was successful again.
This time with a new pair - Pandiyan (who is no more) and Asha Kelunni (Revathy)!
All along, I thought VM wrote all songs of maN vAsanai (considering the hype he gets for anything connected to maNNu). It's interesting to note that he wrote only 'poththi vachcha malliga mottu'. 'Anandhath thEn sindhum poonjOlaiyil' was by PA and 'arisi kuththum akkA makaLE' by MG Vallaban...
Of course, over the years, people don't pay much attention to the other two numbers but poththi vachcha is still heard; however, those two were very popular in patti-thotti at the time of arrival!
Gandhimathi, with her "thongattAn & long kAdhu" created a sensation!

Re: Vinyl ("LP" record) covers speak about IR (Pictures & Details) - Thamizh
KBR's peak was murungakkAi..er...mundhAnai mudichchu. Biggest hit in his career (and possibly one of the biggest hits in the TF history).
Songs were heard in every nook and corner of TN for years! I got another surprise from this vinyl cover that 'andhi varum nEram vandhadhoru rAgam' is not by VM. (For those who keep reading the GA thread in this forum, it won't be difficult to guess the lyricist anymore - because of the 'rAgam' key word )
Well, this was Oorvashi's first movie - what a phenomenal talent she proved to be! Sad to see her nowadays only in divorce case / child custody case kind of news reports and not in movies anymore

'oru Odai nadhiyAkiRadhu' was Sridhar's attempt at the BO after the disastrous ninaivellAm nithyA. This too had terrific songs (and the smart looking Raghuvaran / Sumalatha) but didn't click.
Interesting to note that Vairamuthu's name is repeated for every song (in spite of him being the only lyricist - typically, they place it on top in such cases).

one more "vizhalukku iRaiththa neer" by rAsA - rAgangaL mARuvathillai
Sweet songs but hopeless movie (Prabhu-Ambika). Suffered this in the theater!
BTW, you may notice that recently I'm posting slightly bigger pictures of the side where credits are printed. I had to do this for the EchO records because it's otherwise very difficult to read
If you don't see the whole picture, please "maximize" the browser window (to full screen size), then the picture will appear in total (I mean in IE)...

Re: Vinyl ("LP" record) covers speak about IR (Pictures & Details) - Thamizh
There are few more vinyl covers of rAsA from the year 1983 available at the musicalaya website...trying to finish them off today
indRu nee nAlai nAn - the story by Balan that appeared in (kumudam's) mAlaimathi as "idhu varai veLi vandhirAdha puthiya nAval" got made into a movie by Major. Sivakumar / Lakshmi / Sulakshana / Jaishankar in the main roles (the first two doing the "thagAtha uRavu" roles I think)...
'ponvAnam panneer thoovuthu innEram' has made this album evergreen. Add to that two more lovely numbers - mottu vitta mullakkodi & thAzhampoovE kaNNuRangu! rAsA is terrific form!

I remember reading about a movie with all the kulukku actresses those days (Silukku / Jayamalini / Jothilakshmi)...didn't think it was by IR...however, that's the unfortunate truth, as shown by the vinyl cover.
thiraippadal shows three songs and all three by PS/SPS/BSS
I've never heard even the names of any of them. Anyways, for democracy's sake, here are the (worthless) pics:

app_engine wrote:Another significant album of the year 1983 - the second one after alaigaL Oyvathillai for the 'pAvalar brothers' production - kOzhi koovuthu!
This one was the directorial debut for Gangai Amaran - and the movie was a big success.
The music album was a greater success. R D Burman reportedly told that IR was 10 years ahead of others, after hearing kOzhi koovuthu. IR himself showcased the EdhO mOgam song to Paul Mauriat during their meeting (which was greatly appreciated by PM as per reports).
Viji was an intro in that film - she went on to do many movies in quick succession. Unfortunately, after a few years, she reportedly became disabled due to some error during a medical procedure...not sure what's her present condition is
Silukku acted as Prabhu's jOdi...
Viji committed suicide and died. that was one of the tragic events of 2004-5 period.

App sir,
Wow! Lot of rare collections; Mella Pesungal, Ennai Paar En Azhagai Paar, Eththanai kOnam Eththanai Paarvai, Jothi, Panchami, Raagangal Maaruvathillai (Prabhu's costume ), Indru Nee NaaLai Naan, SoorakOttai Singakutty MalargaL Nanaigindrana. Good to see who acted in some of them which I didn't know earlier. Co-incidentally I was listening to Jothi & Panchami few days back, as Rex posted the audio clips from these films. Thank you for all the hard work.

yw, V_Sji!
Looks like there's still one more album cover from 1983 in the musicalaya website - January 1. Since they've not placed it under "J", I missed it. (That site places this movie name under 1-9 aka numbers, don't know why )
Interesting to see that in the very year he arrived, Manivannan did so many movies (gOpurangaL sAyvathillai, January 1, iLamaikkAlangaL, veettula rAman veLiyila krishnan...so prolific!)

Let's begin 1984 with a Manivannan movie - perhaps his first major hit - nooRavadhu nAL. The album had only three songs but IR made the movie very special with his terrorizing BGM (While watching in theater, bayandhu nadungina anubavam enakku)...
Manivannan gave a nice role to Vijayakanth - he even looked very different in the movie, in comparison to all his prior roles. Sathyaraj got that famous mottai look in nooRAvadhu nAL! Nalini did quite well too while Mohan did average.

The same team led by Manivannan made another thriller in the same year - 24 maNi nEram. (Those days most movies got made within 3 months from the time of concept, not 3 years like now).
This one didn't fly as great as nooRAvadhu nAL...turned out to be an average one. The song 'kuLikkum pOthilE' sounds nice (but wasn't that much popular those days).

Manivannan was making hay while sun shone...he made a couple more movies in the same year. ingEyum oru gangai was a hit, with hit songs "bought out" from oomai veyyil, a movie never to be released. (There's no vinyl cover in musicalaya for ingEyum oru gangai starring Murali & Thara).
He did another (possibly a comedy) - kuvA kuvA vAththukaL - I think the songs were bought-out from some Telugu movie and translated / dubbed...I've never heard them good enough to comment...

Re: Vinyl ("LP" record) covers speak about IR (Pictures & Details) - Thamizh
"yAnai paduththAlum kuthirai mattam" used to be quoted often for certain Rajinikanth movies that didn't do that well during early 80s. Meaning, such movies weren't getting the typical response a Rajinkanth movie used to get prior.
That was possibly the case (i.e. kuthirai mattam) with 'nAn mahAn alla' (started as 'nAn Gandhi alla' and then changed) which supposedly had Radha doing some "Telugu-cinema-like-dance" for 'ommEla oru kaNNu thillAlangadiyO' (Such reference came after Chiranjeevi & Madhavi supposedly did some kAmasooththira positions as dance movements in some Telugu movie. Fortunately or unfortunately I didn't watch the NMA movie those days and hadn't come across this song on youtube yet...)

There was no such 'yAnai paduththAlum' business with kai kodukkum kai however
It was a certified disaster - despite having Mahendran direct Rajini (with Revathy as heroine). It practically ended Mahendran's career. 'thAzhampoovE vAsam veesu' is phenomenal in this album while 'kaNNukkuLLE yArO' is another enjoyable number.

Among such unconventional movies, Rajini also did some 'gaurava' vEdams during this time period. 'anbuLLa Rajinikanth' was perhaps the most famous one among such benefit matches - for his film institute friend who started directing movies. The moonRu mudichchu manasAtchi Natraj (who acted in moonRam piRai as someone trying to rape the heroine).
Meena was "baby Meena" in this movie, singing Rajini Uncle (Muthu -ejAmAn -veerA movies quickly come to mind).
Another important thing - this vinyl cover should be thrown at the face of ALL THOSE WEBSITES that credit thEn poovE poovE vA singer as Krishnachandar!
I've frequently posted in the hub about such nonsense happening among the web community. People who cannot distinguish SPB from Krishnachandar posting anything about TFM on the web is a sin! (e.g. this youtube poster- https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T5SMqYqn0vQ ivangaLellAm singer pEr pOdalainnu yArum azhudhOmA? )

Re: Vinyl ("LP" record) covers speak about IR (Pictures & Details) - Thamizh
IIRC, there were some apprehensions around this time if Rajini is serious about TF market at all, seeing some of his films not doing that well.
andhA kanoon was a huge success in Hindi and he was acting in a few more, mostly remakes from successful southie movies. gangvaa, the remake of malayoor mambattiyAn was a massive hit too. OTOH, there were some not so successful movies in TF.
Well, all such apprehensions were put to rest with "thambikku endha ooru"
Unfortunately, I don't see that vinyl cover on the musicalaya website.
Well, 1984 deepAvaLi saw one of the biggest Rajini successes ever in TF - nallavanukku nallavan! Besides making that movie a blockbuster, people were also appreciating his "acting skills" those days
There's just one pic of the vinyl cover in that website....here it is:

Surprised to note that Manivannan had yet another movie in that year - 'ambikai nEril vandhAL' (that has the sweet SPB song 'kalyANachchElai unadhAgum nALai')...I wonder whether it was some kind of record for a director in a single calendar year...
This movie possibly came and went (didn't get noticed at all IIRC)!

IR had been so prolific in this 1984 - countless movies (many hits among them too) / innumerable hit songs...one tends to forget what all works he did during this time period
However, anbE Odi vA is not the kind of album that one can easily miss. Remember Balki talked about 'jOdi nadhigaL' in that Jaya TV concert? That one is from this! Of course those two sweeties with the same melody - azhagAna pookkaL by SPB & kanavOdu Engum by SJ are there too Then there's this lovely KJY-VJ duet ("idhazhil amudham"). Musicalaya has only one pic from the vinyl cover and the song credits are missing unfortunately
Looks like another Mohan-Sasikala starrer (that was made in quick succession to iLamaikkAlangaL)
