I don't think its just because of the minorities. This looks like a calculated assualt carefully planned by someone with a lot of infuence. The minority vigilantes are just the 'tools'.

Logically, TN being his natural and biggest market,he should voluntarily stop release elsewhere.However there seems to be a highly influential force bent on preventing this film from public view.So he is making the right decision to go ahead.But because of this ban confusion,release tomorrow in India is not going to be easy.

I am not a sucker for conspiracy theories but am convinced that there is more to it than what meets the eye.

Now,it's very tough to be a Kamalhasan.

I thought the major revenue was originally planned from the Hindi version (with its bigger size of audience in India and worldwide), which should not get affected by this TN-only ban. (I don't think Kamal would have spent 95 cr on a movie keeping TN in main view - regardless of his kalai dhAgam)

overseas release in USA - problem here is that there are only 2 shows in Des Moines.. Max no of ppl have to see it this weekend. snow kottichunna matter oooo. TN on the other hand - if it runs to packed houses for a month in all of TN - the movie would easily net 100 + cr. so the loss is immeasurable - already ladies in facebook murmurring about skipping due to fear of backlash/demonstrations/safety concerns... so.. it is imperative that the situation is resolved quick and nice - even if the dogs have to be fed their bones...

You're quite knowledgeable in the disti area. So, some curiosity questions...

There were news reports about the movie getting 400 screens in TN.

a) What is the average that one can assume in the # of seats? 200? 300? 400? (I don't think halls bigger than 400 can operate profitably nowadays)

b) What'll be the average occupancy rate for a prolonged period across all the screens (obviously the first weekend would be 100% but what about weekdays and smaller centers)

c) What'll be the average ticket rate that can be assumed for the whole time period / all shows / all screens?

Let's look at an IMAGINARY SCENARIO:

For e.g. if one assumes 400 screens, 250 seats average, 100% occupancy and Rs 25 average ticket rate, one show everywhere will fetch 25 lacs (400*250*25) and 4 shows will fetch 1 crore. Means, 1 crore each day (average). The initial days obviously will fetch more but law of diminishing marginal utility has to be applied and this average can be assumed, if we are looking at a 30 day period. If these are the numbers, then it's 30 cr gross.

As I mentioned, that calc was just with randor numbers and not actuals.

Please enlighten with what actual numbers are in TN today.

App, you are off on the ticket rates. 25 is way too low. 60-75 would be a good number.

Even in C centers at least for the first few days you can't watch it for less than 50. I am not talking about 'black' rates. Even on the counter they sell it for > 50.

Now I understand why kamal wanted DTH for this movie. If the movie is totally stalled to be shown in screens, the current cinematograph act covers only traditional screens and not digital dispersal media. Question is if push comes to shove will Kamal accept that? If this happens - then a new model for small and controversial movies opens up - Direct to DTH - one step farther than what hollywood has now by way of Direct to DVD
