This came at a time when people were telling that KJY can only sing "slow, soft melodies and not FAST songs"

While the song was quite a decent thAlAttu (there's even a Varalakshmi version), this became popular mainly because of the person on-screen (MGR).

Played everywhere those days and made KJY a household name in TN.

Since Niagara falls is in the picturization, I wonder whether this was replaced by the "malairANi mundhAni" song in Tamil movie. (VJ-Jolly Abraham song that has KR Vijaya & Niagara falls). Perhaps so. However, since they found the melody enjoyable, they had a Tamil version of the KJY song on the soundtrack - may be.

Never watched this movie but had an interesting observation about it  When it got released, I was in Virudhunagar (summer vacation). They ran this movie daily 7 shows for the first few days That was quite rare!

Regardless of such hype, I think the movie was a flop.

Very popular song those days - also used in many of MGR's political meetings (and their party propaganda).

Small trivia - the name of this movie was from an old MGR song (MD S-G & movie "idhaya veeNai" - thiru niRai chelvi song's "thogaiyaRA").  Later this song's first line became the name of another movie (Rajini, Devar Films, IR music).

KJY did all songs but one in a MGR movie of 70's called "ஊருக்கு உழைப்பவன்" (the odd one by SPB-Usha Uthup with English etc).

All the four songs were hits (though not super hits, some of them played only on radio and not much in kOlambi speakers or ADMK functions)....

Thirisoolam was advertised as Sivaji's "200th film" and it was a huge commercial success in TN.

The songs were big hits as well - played everywhere in TN those days. 

KJY had two songs in them - one with SPB & another with VJ.

Radio hit from school days (aka 70's) - used to make fun of the humming (ஆஹாஹா stuff in saraNam) those days - it sounded more like a "திணிப்பு" than a normal call-response (or harmony or counterpoint or any other musical thingy).

Two radio hits from the late 70's composed by KVM had the interesting KJY-SPS combination.

However, since I've already got acquainted with the awesome orch of IR, these songs weren't impressive at all. Pugazhendhi's lackluster orch made me tune off every time these songs got played on radio.

I gave a listen to this song today and was totally irritated with KJY's pronunciation

He sings "seer" (சீர்) as "sEr" (சேர்)   Also, siva(ndha niRam is pronounced as "shivandha" (horrible)!

The on-screen pair is again different (Sivakumar with Rathi - I think rare combo) and their dancing in unbearable. (Just watch in the 1st saraNam portion of "சுகமான திருநாளிது - இன்று எனைத்தேடி வருகின்றது" - the movements are, shocking!      

The other song is no better - but had a lot of air time:

While this is not a super hit song, it did have air time to be called at least a "radio hit".

However, what makes this song remarkable is this was KJY's first for a MGR movie - way back in 60's - this I found out today (from wiki).

Please note, however, that it was not playback for MGR (who had TMS in the same song as his voice) but for Chandrababu who also dances with the lead pair in the song.

While the film titles clearly mention the MD as MSV (with assistants R Govardhanam and Henry Daniel), there is some confusion based on an old disk which claims a couple other songs from the same album as MSV-TKR. Since paRakkum pAvai came around their "split time period", it is possible they did a couple of songs together and then during the dividing of movies, this went to MSV.
