Dhanush....hand wash. Had expectations...maybe too high, poor bloke striving to deliver, the script is passable, but he seemed to be not able to match it...in my smallish amateur book, good actors should save mediocre script....that what made the greats of yesteryears...well....great. Rajini in pathethic Payum Puli? Why not? Kamal in ....no Plum will jump on me.
Ah next....next....next.....
Ah next....next....next.....

Re: Recently Watched
On Jigarthanda:
Certainly an improvement from his first film pizza.
Best part of the film was the character sketches (except the real lead, Sethu). Cunning is the word to describe most of the characters. Siddharth, forget the final 'twist', its been a while since thamizh cinema has seen such a lowlife character as the hero. The saree stealer heroine character was again a surprise. Even oorani, who was the best performer of the film, was not unidimensional. As in his only job was not to 'warn' Karthik but he also derives voyeuristic/sadistic pleasure from watching Sethu from a distance. One example is the scene in which he says, 'SS colony நல்லா தெரியும், friend வீட்டு மாடில போயி இருந்துக்கலாம்'. [Very nice spy stretch that, just like the 15 minute long horror stretch in pizza which was the best part of that film] And he does not get too senti about his 'family' either. The duo just cunningly 'use' Rasu. Even Sethu's allakkais had their not-so-kind-to-their-boss moments such as them chuckling at a.kumar on screen. And they even break into a guffaw when Kayal nominates him to be the hero. And not to forget the producer's சும்மா ஒரு பேச்சுக்கு சொன்னா அடுத்த நாளே வந்துட்டானே.
Two major turn-offs. 1. Performances. Sidhdharth was just plain bad. Bobby Simha's has to be one of the most overrated performances ever. Thankfully the two cameos played by very good actors, Somasundaram and Vijay Sethupathi saved the film to some extent in the performance department. Second turn off was the score. To repeat myself, always find Santhosh's score jarring. Songs sounded good.
Subbaraj's amateurishness showed in plenty of scenes. Most cringeworthy of all was Sethu's
gibberish in the pre-climax. And those cliches like failed-director story / amma sentiment etc. were poorly done. The 'meta' angle did more bad than good. The totally shabba initial scenes i.e. argument about commerce vs art etc. and the clumsy twist in the final scene were by-products of the metaness. To stretch it, I found it very confusing. Subbaraj wants to make a hardcore gangster film, but ends up making a powerstaresque film because thats all he could afford to do? Or this was easier? But even that was not his 'original' idea, he in fact sets out to make THE gangster film and it was Somasundaram's quip, 'ஊரே கை கொட்டி சிரிக்கும்' that makes him change his intent half-way.
Anyway, eventhough the film was 'engaging', nothing about it stayed with me right after. So yeah, one time watch.

Re: Recently Watched
The 8 yr old has found out that youtube has the HD version of a recent Vijay film.
Add to this the situation that I have time-off for the rest of the year.
Watched kaththi thus, against all odds.
I'm glad it happened and I'm happy for the success of the movie with such a nice theme.
Of course, I'm allergic to all the masAlA elements (and most of the crew) but the water / farmer / village theme has nullified all those nonsense distractions and make me give a + to this movie.
Hope more such successful films (masAlAs with big stars but at least 25% focus on some serious stuff) come out for the sake of public awareness of such really really major issues!

Re: Recently Watched
Watched hindi movie "PK" with expectation fuelled from various online and relattives glowing reviews.
I find it a fake, sermonizing film masquerading as some cutie-pie entertainer.
The initial scenes elicited few guffaws and then got tedious as it clearly started targeting
a specific religion. Even the romance with Pakistani connection was highly unconvincing. There were few ear-pleasing songs though.

Watched Pisaasu last week and loved it. Mysskin's take on the horror genre and the way some of the sequences were conceived made it an interesting watch. I always like Mysskin's storytelling and Pisaasu was no different. Music by the new comer was quite good and did enhance the visuals as it is supposed to. The only song in the movie is enjoyable both for the music and visuals.

Re: Recently Watched
^Brilliant, all of you.
I didn't quite like it. The screenplay in the first half was not stable and had too many horror tropes in the first half, just for the sake of it, especially when he subverts them in the second half.
Also could not really connect with their 'louu'. Needed a stronger base. Granted its a brilliant take on love at first sight, however the louu didnt work at all. So much so that Radharavi saying 'இந்த சின்னஞ்சிறுசுகள பிரிச்சுட்டியே' evoked laughter.
And I had too many plausibility issues [That auto driver, on the road, actually driving, seriously?!, and if the ghost was all powerful, [bottle on belly etc.] can she not destroy the evidence?, I mean she tries and all that]
Understand that the domestic violence in the neighbor's house is a parallel to the main thread but Gawd how misogynistic can Mysskin get? The ghost chooses the kitchen of all places to stay, does household chores etc.
Score was amateurish, guy has a long way to go. Should learn to employ silence for starters.

About some more films I watched recently:
Lingaa - What an awfully boring film. Except that 3 minute dhaadi character, nothing worked. Anushka was a relevation however.
Madras - Sincere, honest and an important film. Lot of respect to Pa Ranjith. Ending could have been much better though.

by casting someone like him with such backlog of bad reps was almost hoping that the knot was something sinister but his role was a damp squib.
no wonder Bhavani completely abandoned him
Me beef with Mysskin is the way he handles his actors, he should start working with well knowns or least those who act, these newbies mostly end being his phantasm
and yam tired watching them react in similar vein each time.
As much I like his pitch perfect stunt choreography, they too stick out in genres like these. How I wish he comes out of his ethuponna compassion/morality themes
and reverts to his police procedurals which no one does with such hands-on approach in Indian cinema.

Some audacity to keep making the same film every single time. And yeah I am really tired too.

Police procedural / crime thriller with Raaja.

Madras - Excellent!
While most of the "dhideer thiruppam" points could be guessed, the last one was definitely unexpected! (That is, for me)
Well done Ranjith!

Re: Recently Watched
Lingaa - Not bad at all, I even liked it. I started watching the movie with lowest expectations having read various tweets and reviews much against the film. I have seen far worse Rajini films earlier. I liked the flash-back plot very much. The locations, visuals, colors and tones of the whole flashback (cinematography) was very well done, except for the train fight; appeared totally artificial and cartoonish. Agree, film did not have much twists, but definitely not a boring film for me. Climax was overdone, but that did not take away my interest in the film. Music didn't quite catch up to the story and the time, but on the whole the film worked for me.
I would even watch again for the flash back, especially when Lingeswaran hosts dinner to the village people after he lost all his wealth. Truly a stunning, inspiring and emotional moment of the film. Rajini at his 'signature' best!

We were wondering "who is this actress playing Pannaiyar's wife - எங்கேயோ பார்த்த மாதிரி இருக்கே " but didn't identify when watching the movie
I recommended the movie to a co-worker yesterday and then read some of the related posts (including P_R's brilliant blog post )
Now I know it is that Sankarabaranam child turned sakalakalAvallavan thangachchi turned nallavanukku nallavan daughter
Interesting to see that she's still in movies!

Re: Recently Watched
Finally got to watch Karaiellam Shenbagapoo. Never read Sujatha's book but I guess it was quite popular and rated highly. I did knew that the movie was a terrible flop and even Sujatha didn't think highly about the movie or its music from one of the interviews I read. I still wanted to give it a watch mainly for our man's score and also the intriguing plot.
First impression - a terribly made movie in terms of direction, acting, screenplay and what not. It could have been a fantastic thriller something on the lines of Anveshana. The background score was decent but I felt that even IR seemed disinterested and nothing stood out for me in terms of the score. There were a few supposedly spooky scenes where I felt the music was a tad too mild and I have seen our man go bonkers with the score for movies of the same genre. Or, may be I was totally disengaged with the movie and didn't quite notice the intricacies of the score.
BTW, here is the YT link in case if you wanted to just watch it.

Watched the latest Gautham movie and am determined to tell only a couple of good things about it (because of NEPV)...
1. The scene in the aircraft was good
2. One (may be two) songs sounded good
