moodupani - a few days back because of Rex's 365 quiz BGM hosting Smile

Apart from rAsA BGM, there's Shobha in the movie, another important reason to watch (despite every other thing being a sodhappal)...

Likewise, "Julie Ganapathy" today - because of Viyanpulam blog (by Mayil / mafia group)...

It could have been a terrific movie but for the following problems :

1. Jayaram - mimicry artist, can at best be a comedian Embarassed  (Actually I was LOLing for some dialogs between him & Saritha). Anyone else, even a pudhu mugam could have been terrific in this role. (Had BM roped in Kamal or Madhavan, it could have been a big success IMO)

2. Two songs should have been cut. Actually three. (Saritha bayamuRuththal, Ramya dance & the car cassette enakkuppidiththa pAdal)

3. Total length should have been 1.5 hours (ok, for TF considerations, may be another 10 min). Felt too long / dragging Sad

4. No typical rAsA BGM Embarassed  This sounded generic...(though better than any other TFM MD, there was no rAsA element IMHO)

Saw Mariyaan yesterday. Some wonderful moments in the first half. Terribly botched up sequences in the second half. Songs are fine and a few of them are quite beautiful on the ears. But other than Innum Konjam and arguably Enga Pona Raasa and Nenje Ezhu, others are forced into the narration and don't do anything to the film. Dhanush is the stand out. Incredible performance and saves the screwed up second half with a singular performance of nuance, subtlety and finesse. Salvages the film and makes it eminently watchable once for his lead show.

rettai vAl kuruvi by BM (yes, that movie with 'kaNNan vandhu pAdukinRan kAlam ellAm' & 'rAja rAja chOzhan nAn')

Archana excels!

Radhika is ok!

VKR is terrific!

Mohan mostly bad (some scenes kaththi), just ok in one or two scenes Sad

Only after the "2 months" thingy the film creates some interest - otherwise boaring.

Of course, there are some scenes where I laughed out loud Smile

How did it do when released? Was it a success? (I know those two songs were super hits and are evergreen)

chinnakkouNdar - first time!

Agreed, it's a masAlA in a differnet mileau - but what a lovely masAlA!

Terrific movie overall - especially the clever way the director places knots and resolves them! Despite some of the scenes looking very ordinary due to the performance of the players on-screen, the writing itself is brilliant - almost Bagyarajesque!

Enjoyed many scenes / sequences, besides the Gounder specials (some scenes vizhundhu vizhundhu sirichchEN!)

Despite very poor performance by Suganya, the whole "moi virundhu" sequence is a phenomenal, milestone thingy in TF history! Meets or exceeds everything BR had done in his famous village movies (even matches Mahendran level, just that another artist could have made it extreme!)

As always, I'm not a fan of fights and such masAlA stuff but there are not too many to get irritated Smile OTOH, too many lovely scenes (mostly poorly executed, though - but director's vision is lovely).

Thanks to rAsA, what would have been just above-average had made it to A+ Smile

Despite all the apprehensions, went ahead and watched "idhayakkOvil" today.
(No great reviews, MR telling his worst movie etc but rAsA songs warranted at least one watch...)

Radha is so pretty in this movie. Add rAsA music which is great. And Mohan is not all that irritating as in some other movies.

It's an OK watch. (Definitely 100 times better than irritable Bombay that I was forced to watch due to circumstances).

idhayam oru kOvil adhil udhayam oru pAdal!

cheers

Both films that I watched recently (muththu maNi mAlai & vAnuyarndha sOlaiyilE movies) had GM Smile

In IK, the best moment (to me) was when he says "இது ஆயுதங்கள் புழங்குற இடம்" (his dad's barber shop)

தீயா வேல செய்யணும் குமாரு - Fine film. This perhaps is the first and will probably be the only film in which Santhanam comes across as the best actor in the entire film. That's how horrible the lead actors were. Perfectly miscast. Could have done away with a few cliches towards the end of the film. And the songs, can't understand the rationale behind having them. One they are absolutely tasteless and two they just slow the proceedings down. Apart from all this its a solid film. Best silly film in a long time. Can't understand how BRangan among others put Kalakalappu (which was also fine I thought) above this. Also the former made a lot of noise and this sort of sank without a trace. This is easily Sundar C's best. Not to forget, Nalan is also credited for the writing.

Watched Soodhu Kavvum. Liked it very much, same as NKPK. Loved the cast and characterizations, the humor content really worked me for and it is way different & enjoyable than the monotonous mainstream comedies in recent films. Nice review Nerd the clap

Theeya vEla seyyanum kumaru - Actually the main concept was taken from Chhoti Si Baat (1975) where Ashok Kumar and Amol Palekar had the same roles of Santhanam and Siddarth to woo Vidya Sinha. I don't think they have credited that film, if so, it is bad. Considering this, could not enjoy thoroughly. Certainly Santhanam  was too good, some hilarious scenes and dialogues. Some priceless expressions of Santhanam, especially when he says Siddarth has gone to level 3. Even though the main idea was from that hindi film, the sub-plots are original, but didn't like that twist (Santhanam - Hansika) and the following drama. Siddharth is good for these kind of roles. Good entertainer mainly watchable for Santhanam, but not a great one.

Mouna Guru - Brilliant. Better than the new wave comedies of 2012-13, save for NKPK.

NKPK=Mounaguru>  Soodhu, Pizza burger etc

Excuse my superlatives if it is aaliwood copy

pizza pAkkalai, otherwise +1

Actually I watched mounaguru in may be 10 "elliptical" installments Embarassed

Definitely more interesting than some highly praised movies (e.g. barfi, yet to complete)!

20% of noolveli on vijaytv - themes of incest, illiicit affair  i typical padmarajan/bharathan territory - gets caught up in KB
narrative space- need to watch fully before judging - but way ahead of its times in many ways - anyone else who has seen this movie fully?

Yes indeed. But the way it came to me from my friend made me interpret it was rather crudely done and an experiment gone wrong from KB.

My "well-informed" 7 yr old insisted on watching 'thalaivA' on big screen Shocked
(Recent visit to her cousin's place & watching a lot of Thamizh TV channels made her more informed about TF than me Embarassed)

Anyways, I showed her that the film is no longer in screens (last day was Aug-15 in Metro Detroit area).

Result?
We both ended up watching "singam 2" on einthusan Laughing

As foolish as any masAlA & noisy.

Only the day prior I watched Surya's 50 lac win on NVOK and was wondering whether all that "agaram" stuff is for real or staged...and is this fellow really doing something remarkably good, useful to the society etc...

Well, people will waste their money anyways on movies...if a small % of singam 2 revenue goes to agaram, it's not too bad (i.e. all those claims about agaram are for real)...
