- kaadhal iLavarasan's play boy film
- the only thing i remembered from my childhood view of this film is "kamal riding a horse backwards"..
- full of KB touch.. humour, dialogues, characters..
- after watching this, i found, "Manaivi amaivadhellam" song is from this film.. "wrong number" song by KJJ is also good
- i watched in a lesser quality print.. still all the female leads including heroine are utter waste.. Jayapradha's debut..
- Radharavi's debut too..
- lot of boring scenes.. one time watch also pain

(BTW, nAn pAkkalai...post thaLabathi, MR movies only involuntary watch possible. And I've watched two - one like / another not like (AP / Bombay) )

Straight off the bat, Mani Ratnam’s Kadal is nowhere in the league of his earlier films. He has been let down by a wobbling script and weak characterisation. Mani is also in alien territory exploring Christian philosophy and teachings. He is trying to find answers to a tussle going on between good and the evil in the hero’s mind!

KANNA LADDU THINNA AASAIYA

- apart from very few dialogues from Santhanam & Power star.. its a pain to watch
- i would rate it 3rd from the bottom.. last 2 is OKOK & THAMIZH PADAM
- one positive from KLTA is the heroine.. good wood..
- at present, the directors are not thinking beyond spoof for comedy films.. choose some famous song / sequence from old films.. recreate scenes like lollu sabha & sell it as a comedy..
- vazhga vaLamudam for those who like & believe these films as comedy films.. even the likes of Thangamani Rangamani, Sagadevan Mahadevan are far far better than these films..

What if someone made crispy chicken with some special recipe and served it after 55 years?

And it tasted as fresh and tasty as when it got made? There's got to be some magic in that recipe!

4 line story / no big suspense / everything even a child can guess and they don't even let that do that as they reveal well ahead / B&W etc.

Still, what a lovely movie!

What performances, great music, no-nonsense scenes / dialogs can do to enliven up the proceedings is a text book lesson for any aspiring movie maker!

Savithri / her hubby / Ranga Rao / Nambiar / Thangavelu - all doing their parts adequately! Music is a winner! (Rajeswararao )

I believe it was inspired from a Bengali movie when made in Telugu originally (then remade into Thamizh & Hindi)...Great work by the team!

It's extremely tiring to watch Mani saar struggle to tell a story. And this one in particular is the simplest of all. Good Vs Evil. Almost all the characters are painted in broad strokes. And Mani saar does not trust his audience at all. Arjun for example falls on the 'evil' side and every third dialogue he speaks is naan chaaththaan'dey. The leading lady is a metaphor for 'an angel' and guess what she wears the entire film? Whites of course. That's how unimaginative Mani saar has become. Remember how Karthik jumped trees playing hanumaan? How rewarding it would have been if he had let the audience draw parallels?

Hero goes back and forth between good and evil. One character with a little ambiguity and unfortunately it was very poorly written. Almost becomes a caricature, Gautham Karthik's very earnest performance notwithstanding. In fact all the 3 actors who played his character were the best actors in the film.

The first few minutes, no not those with Arvindasaamy and Arjun, the ones involving Hero, his mother and his biological father were really good. Riveting and I was genuinely surprised. Once Aravindasaamy enters, I lost interest. Actually there were a few lovely scenes after that too (the whole Manchu episode and heroine rubbing hero's hands off of all sins to name a couple) but the movie as a whole was not going anywhere. The last 15 minutes, the conflict between good vs evil, in the middle of sea, I see where Mani saar wanted to do, but poorly acted and shot. And way too long. It was such a torture. Thankfully Aravindasaamy provided some comic relief (inadvertent) in the last scene to make us come out of the theater smiling.

Jayamohan's dialogues wasnt great either but really liked this: Beatrice: neenga chinna vayasula enna game viLaiyaaduveenga? Thomas: sOththuchchaNdai

Somehow Rahman's background score never works for me and this film is no exception. Extremlely loud at places.

Could spot a couple of yeng white ladees in the audience and at the end one said to the other, it was not bad, was it? And there was one 80s song reference, and it was SAR's Ey pulla karuppaayi. LOL!

And Kadal has to be Mani saar's most religious film ever. Every other scene has a jesus/cross image and way too many biblical references and dialogues. Too close to being a mythological.
Anyway, except the last 15 minutes, the rest of the film was mildy interesting and (one-time) watchable. WAY better than Raavanan.

Of course, Kamal is the main star! Savithri does her role with ease and Gemini average.

Quite engaging but too lengthy (suitable for 1959 audience of course but not today).

Poor reviews, Mani, ARR, David with poor buzz / reports < Poor reviews, Gautham, Raaja, Kumki with great buzz, super reports. Eppudeee

Yes I agree with you ... This movie was the mixture of many incidents apparently the climax did not work out well. Nevertheless a good attempt.

* அரவிந்த சாமி அந்த ஊருக்கு புதிய பங்குக் குருவாக வருகிறார் .. தமிழ் சினிமாவில் கிராமத்து பள்ளிக்கூடத்துக்கு புதிதாக வரும் ஆசிரியர் ஒரு பஸ்ஸில் வந்து இறங்கி நான் தான் பள்ளிக்கு புதுசா வந்திருக்கும் வாத்தியார் என்ன மக்களிடம் சொல்வாரே அது போல புதிய பங்கு சாமியார் வருவதாக காட்டும் போது நான் விழுந்து விழுந்து சிரித்தேன் .. ஏனென்றால் ஒரு பங்குக்கு அதுவும் கடற்கரை பங்குக்கு பங்கு குருவானவர் பொறுபேற்க வருகிறார் என்றால் அத்தனை சுழுவாக நடந்து விடாது .. மறைமாவட்ட ஆயர் (பிஷப்) அதை அறிவிப்பார் ..பின்னர் பொறுப்பேற்கும் அன்று பெரும்பாலும் பிஷப் அவரோடு ஊருக்கு வருவார் . ஊரிலிருந்து பங்கு கமிட்டியினர் வருகின்ற புதிய குருவை சென்று வரவேற்று கொண்டு வருவார்கள் . ஓரே கூடி நிற்கும் ஒரு நிகழ்வில் பங்குக்குருவானவர் பொறுப்பேற்றுக்கொள்வார் . இது போல ஏதோ புதிதாக வந்த போஸ்ட் மாஸ்டர் கணக்காக யாரும் வருவதில்லை .


* ஒரு குருவானவரை ஊரார் நடத்தும் விதம் அதிர்ச்சிகரமாக காட்டப்பட்டுள்ளது . எக்காரணத்தைக் கொண்டும் ஒரு குருவனாவரை அடிப்பது , உதைப்பது , கிட்டத்தட்ட எல்லோருமே நாராச மொழியில் பேசுவது போன்றவை மணிரத்தினமும் , ஜெயமோகனும் பொதுவாக மீனவர்கள் படிப்பறிவற்றவர்கள் , முரடர்கள் , மரியாதை தெரியாதவர்கள் என்ற பொதுப்புத்தியை தாண்டி எந்த களஆய்வும் செய்யவில்லை என்றே தெரிகிறது . முந்தைய காலங்களைப் போல குருவானவர் என்றால் பிரமிப்பும் , பக்தியும் இப்போது இல்லாதிருக்கலாம் . அதற்கு காரணம் இன்றைக்கு மிக அதிக அளவில் குருவானவர்கள் வருவது இந்த கடற்கரை கிராமங்களிலிருந்து தான் . இப்போது சொந்த குடும்பத்திலோ அல்லது ஒன்று விட்ட குடும்ப வட்டத்திலோ குறைந்தபட்சம் ஒரு குருவானவரோ அல்லது கன்னிகாஸ்திரியோ இல்லாத ஒரு மீனவ குடும்பத்தை பார்ப்பது அரிது .அந்த வகையில் பிரமிப்பும் பக்தியும் குறைந்து போயிருக்கலாம் .ஆனால் குருவானவரை ஏதோ வேண்டப்படாத விரோதி போல பார்க்கும் நிலை கண்டிப்பாக இல்லை .. சில ஊர்களில் சில குருவனாவர்களை ஏசுவதும் , அரிதாக சிறிது தாக்குவதும் நடந்திருக்கலாம் .ஆனால் இது போல ஊர்முழுக்க வசையும் தாக்குதலும் குருவனாவர் மீது நடப்பதாக காட்டுவது மீனவர் பற்றிய பொதுப்புத்தி என்றே நினைக்கிறேன். அதுவும் எடுத்தவுடனே அந்த பையன் பாதிரியாரை வசை மாறி பொழிவதற்கு எந்த முகாந்திரமும் இல்லை . அப்படி நடந்தால் கண்டிப்பாக மக்கள் பார்த்துக்கொன்டிருக்க மாட்டார்கள்.


* இந்த படத்திலும் சரி , நீர்ப்பறவையிலும் சரி .. ஹீரோ ஊரால் புறக்கணிக்கப்பட்டவர் , ஊதாரி ரேஞ்சில் வருகிறார்கள் . நீர்ப்பறவையில் கடலில் கண்டெடுக்கப்பட்டவன் என்பதால் மக்களால் ஏற்றுக்கொள்ளப்படாதது போலவும் , இந்த படத்தில் தாய் சோரம் போனதால் ஒதுக்கப்பட்டதாக்கவும் காட்டுகிறார்கள் . இறந்து போன தாயைத்தவிர அவனுக்கு யாருமே இல்லையாம் . இவையெல்லாம் கடற்கரை சமூகத்தில் சாத்தியமில்லாதது ..ஏனென்றால் பாரம்பரிய மீனவர்கள் நூற்றாண்டுகளாக அங்கிருப்பவர்கள் , யாராக இருந்தாலும் மாமன் , மச்சான் என குறைந்தது 10 குடும்பங்களாவது அந்த ஊரில் இருக்கும் . நான் பார்த்தவரை மீனவ சமூகம் பாலியல் ரீதியாக சோரம் போனதற்காக்க போன்ற சொத்தை காரணங்களுக்காக யாரையும் தள்ளி வைப்பதும் இல்லை ..இப்படி கேவலமாக நடத்துவதும் இல்லை .. கூட நின்று தட்டிக் கேட்பதற்கு குறைந்தது நாலு பேரில்லாத எவரையும் நான் எங்கள் ஊர்களில் பார்த்ததில்லை . (உள்ளூர் கிராமங்களுக்கும் இது பொருந்துமே என கேட்கலாம் ..நிச்சயமாக வேறுபாடு இருக்கிறது)


* நீர்ப்பறவை ஆனாலும் சரி , இதிலும் சரி .. தன்னை நிரூபிக்க ஒரு படகு வாங்கி அதில் தொழில் செய்ய முற்படுவதாக காட்டப்படுகிறது ..அதெல்லாம் சரி தான் .ஆனால் படகில் தொழில் செய்வதை ஏதோ பம்பரம் விடுவது கணக்காக காட்டுகிறார்கள் ..முதலில் ஒரு கட்டுமரத்தில் வலையோடு சென்று மீன்பிடிக்கவே குறைந்தது இரண்டு பேராவது சேர்ந்து செல்ல வேண்டும் . வள்ளம் எனப்படும் படகிலேயே ஹீரோக்கள் தனியாக சென்று மீன்பிடிப்பது போல காட்டப்படுவது நல்ல காமெடி .. வள்ளம் , படகுகளில் மீன்பிடிப்பதற்கும் படகில் சுற்றுலா போவதற்கும் வித்தியாசம் உண்டல்லவா ? குளுமையான காட்சி அமைப்பு , அட்டகாசமான காமிரா கோணம் திரைப்படங்களுக்கு தேவையென்பதால் படகில் படுத்துக்கொண்டு கையை விரித்து போஸ் கொடுப்பது , திடீரென்று வீட்டு அக்குவேரியத்திலிருந்து ஒரு மீனை அள்ளுவது போல அம்மாம்பெரிய மீனை கடலில் கைவிட்டு அசால்டாக பிடித்து விடுவது எல்லாம் எனக்கு ஏதோ ஹீரோ சுற்றுலா போவது போலிருக்கிறதே தவிர , தொழில் செய்வது போலில்லை .. இவையெல்லாவற்றையும் விட மிகப்பெரிய காமெடி சினிமாக்களில் கடலில் வலை வீசுவதாக வரும் காட்சிகள் தான் .. இதுவரை அப்படி வீசப்படும் வலைகளெல்லாம் ஏரி , குளங்களில் வீசப்படும் வலைகள் தான் . வலையை தோளில் போட்டுக்கொண்டு ஒரு முனையை பிடித்து வீசுவதாக காட்டுவார்கள் .. கடலிலே பயன்படுத்தப்படும் வலைகள் குறைந்தது 100 மீட்டர் நீளமாவது இருக்கும் .யாரும் அதை தோளில் தூக்கி வீசுவதில்லை ,வீசவும் முடியாது .

While the lack of knowledge about ground realities could be a handicap for MR, I doubt if that was the case with JeMo.

From whatever I could infer based on his blog posts (I've read a number of them over the years), he must be quite familiar with most of local realities. I think some of his writings are twisted deliberately (means ignoring known major realities but blowing very minor things out of proportion -either driven by agenda or simply to sensationalize).

Or, may be he is simply arrogant to ignore what can be easily observed - choosing to look at everything with (saffron?) colored glasses. Once when I pointed out major inaccuracies in one of his articles, he replied my mail stating :

Excellent write-up Joe. Very well presented with lot of details. Love to read more about your views. I am always weary of Mani sir's 'nunippul mEithyal'. He does not faithfully get into the core elements, especially in social subjects. He is extremely good in love subjects, it would be good if he continues in that line.

Was checking my dad's FB page and I saw that he "likes" Shalini Ajith!!!! AcchA enthathathuthu!!!! All the years bragging to others that he never physically beaten us, now I know why he played all those movies when we were kids. I need to confront him the next visit. Arrr...the trauma...the scar....

Was watching the comedy scenes in Indru Poi Naalai Vaa yesterday. Some of the scenes were really ROFL worthy:
--Hindi tuition scene at Rajendran's house with the grandmother feeding laddu (Ek gaon mein is iconic isn't it). That grandmother was freaking hilarious.
--Venkat getting introduced to Kallapatti Singaram character through that washerman. The next day when he starts jogging at 5am (you should listen to the BGM, especially the flute porting when Kallapatti starts running, it just tingles you with laughter). Kallapatti's dialogue delivery is peerless.
--Kallapatti and the Hindi Pandit getting paid for their acts after Radhika rejects the love proposal

Heard Kanna Laddu Thinna Aasaya has the same story line. Wonder if its anywhere close to Indru Poi Naalai Vaa in terms of making you laugh.
