Another just-for-fun series.

Some guidelines for this thread :

1. There has to be a couplet written about one IR song. (Thamizh / English / any language will do)

2. It must briefly describe some aspect of the song.

3. There must be RHYME (edhugai / mOnai / thodai)

4. It need not be வெண்பா (or following any other grammar). Just from the heart - i.e., "என் பா"

BTW, பேசேட்டன் should be understood as either "bass" or "base" Smile

(Rough translation of the couplet : "Though dAsettan's voice got old, the base / bass is ever young."
The song shows strains in KJY's voice but bass guitar is superb. Also, KJY's voice is always supreme in bass frequencies. In addition, the "base" or the foundation of the song, IR's music, is always young).

Translation : The low frequency female voice and the crashing drummer's hands - WOW, we need to embrace and celebrate them!

There can be another variation of this couplet, replacing the "அடித்தொண்டைப் பெண்குரலும்" with "அடிச்சுரத்தில் தந்திக்கீச்சும்", thus celebrating the extraordinary double bass / cello sounds as well!

One of the greatest songs of IR!

I don't think I need to explain the poem in this case too (written a lot already about it).

Just got reminded of P_R sir (@dagalti) not agreeing to my "Saroj Narayan Swamy" comment on Sunithi's voice in this song rotfl

Rough translation : Though the age of the rough / rustic voice is close to 70, it still matches and plays with the young female voice Smile

IR was 69 I think when NEPV got released (2012) - which is why the "almost 70" reference Smile

I guess those who can read Thamizh can appreciate the rhyme that uses a lot vallinam and still manages to match the song!

இன்னும் வெருண்டு, மருண்டு , உருண்டு, புரண்டு, வறண்டு என்று சொற்களுக்குப் பஞ்சமில்லை. கொஞ்சம் லைட்-டா இருக்கணும்னு தான்!

"இரண்டாம் இடையிசை" குறித்த கருத்து இந்தப்பாட்டுக்கு மட்டுமல்ல, நூற்றுக்கணக்கான ராசா பாடல்களுக்குப் பொருந்தத்தக்கது தான்!

Translations of the three versions can be as below :

#1 : He starts with classical but grows it into modern - well, he rules over every kind of music anyways!

#2 : The music that starts classical but later transforms into modern can actually rule over EVERY part of world!

#3 : The king of melody who DOES NOT invite us in this song - long live on the earth with great fame!

I don't think I need to connect these couplets with the song (as these are pretty obvious). However, I need to briefly narrate what happened this evening in the Sams club gas station at Indianapolis Smile

After getting some urgent needs (water / paper towels etc) from Sams club (the wholesale store chain of Walmart), I suddenly realized that gas (petrol) needs to be filled in the van as I have a 250 mile drive tomorrow...so stopped at the pump, with this song playing in repeat mode.

Seeing that the there had been almost 20 cars in the lines for pumps, my mind played the trick of increasing the volume quite a lot / rolling down the windows while I started filling the gas Laughing

The white lady (grandmA of course) filling next to me was blown away / terribly impressed by the music that came from the minivan and started a conversation with me Smile

She : Oh, that music is excellent - is it middle eastern? I  simply love it!

Me : Thank you, but it is not mid-eastern but INDIAN - specifically, SOUTH INDIAN!

She : Oh, is it - it is very impressive and sweet!

Me : Yes it is, the score is by my favorite composer who had done more than 5000 original songs and did the BGM / OST for more than 1000 movies!

She : AhA - that is unbelievable, what is his name?

Me (so proudly) - His name is ILAYARAJA - not that much known in the western pop world, but very respected in western classical world. In fact, this particular number was recorded with a symphony orchestra in London and he often writes scores for symphony orchestras around the world!

She : WOW - never heard of such talent!


Well, that conversation made my evening (appropriately celebrated with a couple of ICE-COLD-YOU-KNOW-WHAT-THIS-SONG-IS-ASSOCIATED-WITH Laughing )

When starting my 270 mile drive last night, I knew it's not going to be a very pleasant one - it was really cold & one can expect icy roads (even though freeways were plowed and salted after the snow storm, the shoulders aren't clean and some curves had a lot of ice "encroachments").

Well, it was 0 degree F when I started and some segments of travel had negative, lowest was -7F, but with very few vehicles on the road, I could drive without any hindrance to my music listening - and that is the most important part of any ride nowadays!

The two songs mentioned in the previous post took up most of the 3+ hours, on repeat mode as I got too much immersed in them - despite being very familiar with 1000's of listens prior!

First it was 'ponvAnam panneer thoovudhu' and I don't need to get into the greatness of this song - written / discussed umpteen times, including the recent one in 'misra chApu' thread. So, let me get into the "2 adi" rightaway:

Rough translation :
When drowned (in the ocean of music), how can one know what weapon hit them - if it were the most beautiful girl of seven notes (i.e. music) or the seven beat cycle (thakita-thakadhimi misra nadai)!

Without dwelling much on the song itself (no explanation needed anyways), I'm just very proud of giving my most favorite female singer a sweet title "ஏழிசையின் பேரழகி" - yes, SJ is the most "beautiful" in the world of singing without any question!

After 30 minutes or so of that song's repeat, I switched to random mode and listened to a few, even skipping some until the killer song started playing (and it continues to play for another day on the vaNdi).

The magnum opus vanakkiLiyE song!

Now, let me get into my thought process of "couplet building" for this song Smile  My mind was still in the same Thiruvalluvar template and the very moment the song started playing I finalized the second line - almost instantaneously :

"பாலும் பர்மனும் வியந்து" (Both Paul Mauriat and Burman got stunned) Smile Smile Smile

There cannot be a better second line, per my pea sized brain!

It was just a matter of permutation / combination of words then, to build the first line - in line with the தகையணங்குறுத்தல் jollu template Smile

Translation:
Was it the themmAngu (folk melody) or the orchestration or the harmony / counterpoints - Paul and Burman got shocked, amazed and astonished!

The song has simply too many specialities - however, on this occasion my mind was running around the great appreciation IR got from PM & RDB. He went on to talk about it in interviews / articles etc. those days - which is a rarity. (I don't think he talks about those two individuals much nowadays - I would love some college girls to ask him about them in the next opportunity - or some media guys. If at all i get a chance to meet him, I would ask him about PM without question).

Now, my thoughts during the drive were not just about IR giving a lot of importance to their comments (it goes without saying that he got inspired by both those people - at the minimum in his early days and had great regards for them), but more on "why those two greats thought much about this particular number / album" business!

A quick note on those who don't know the background :
- IR always appreciated RDB (possibly considered him a close friend, even a mAnaseega guru) and used to send his recordings to him (even before they are out in the market). When kOzhi koovudhu was given to RDB, he was so impressed and reportedly made this remark " IR, you are a decade ahead of all of us"!

-Likewise IR had great regards for PM and when he visited Europe in 80's he wanted to meet him. It was not easy to get his appointment and IR gave a cassette as his visiting card - that had this song and some HTNI tracks. PM got so  impressed that he spent hours talking to IR!

Now, after putting that "பாலும் பர்மனும் வியந்து" in my couplet, I was wondering what hit them!

Well, the song is obviously a powerhouse - with all those terrific WCM elements (strings/ harmony / vocal harmony specials / possible counterpoints / amazing melody etc.). However, I honestly don't think those were the ones that hit RDB / PM!  

Why?

Well, they would have definitely liked / loved / appreciated those things but such things they've heard a lot more in their musical lives before. At the maximum, they'll be surprised that some simple country person from a remote village in India could do what well-trained-WCM composers can do...but that in itself couldn't make them "impressed" with this particular piece. (For an analogy, if I export a Simla apple to someone in Seattle, he'll be surprised that there're tasty apples elsewhere in the world but won't be stunned about it - after all he had seen apples all his life - variety of colors / flavors / tastes - possibly even better than the Simla one).

Such great orchestrators as RDB / PM could have at the max "approved" IR of meeting world-class-WCM standards (could have even wondered how this guy had mastered Bach / Mozart effortlessly). Not a cause for awe IMHO!

So, what really got them? This is where I need to bring in the reference of a totally unconnected (though idiotic) character Laughing The lyricist of the movie 96 whose recent interviews I happened to hear / watch on twitter. Without getting into much of that fellow's nonsense, let me just get to the point - he dismissed "kuthu" as waste (also said he doesn't care for IR / does not want to write for him etc which is unrelated to this post).

In this 'EdhO mOgam', IMHO, that is the part - the themmAngu (or "kuththu" in Chennaiwala terminology) that shocked RDB & PM - that such an unknown music form can so nicely be amalgamated with WCM! That is precisely the greatness of IR that those two talents could not help but getting awestruck! (BTW, if someone does not agree with me that vanakkiLiyE is a themmangu, I would request them to listen again - paying attention to the country-drum style arrangement, the melody itself - especially the saraNam portions. If anyone doubts the Indian folk heritage of this song, let them please pay attention to the santoor-flute duet in the second interlude and then conclude).

I guess I've talked enough - actually I was musing for a couple of hours on this topic - when the song was playing on repeat! From time to time I got to appreciate my fav SJ - why even Krishachandar. BTW, per my latest opinion, in this song it wasn't KC the worst - it was VM the worsttu Embarassed)

app sir, kindly give clues so newbies to this forum (like me) could understand.  But I'll try my best to "solve" it.  I remember some Tfm pages. But mayyam is somewhere I've never been to.  

My first guess was "Aaraariro paadiyathaaro" but since your couplet involves "குட்டு ", I'd think it is "Kanne kalaimaane".  

I don't want to embarrass myself with anymore guesses. Embarassed

mayyam.com/talk is the same as tfmpage.com - updated user interface, that's all.

Well, let me expand my earlier clue - @jvazhkudai is (or was) the twitter handle of our fellow forumer Jaiganesh, who was also very active at mayyam.com/talk (tfmpage.com)

He opened a thread in the "Current Topics" section of the TFM area in that website years ago, with this song Smile

Now, you may be able to catch easily - especially with the first two words of the couplet.

It struck me in the end of the second interlude. If there is one song to bear all the Ilaiyaraaja stamps of his 80s phase - it has to be this one.
prelude with a catchy counterpoints and harmony - Check
chorus doing a counterpoint and singing out a melody that is heavenly - Check
majestic violins with sections playing different melody - Check.
Ok - lets do the same with vocal counterpoints from lead singers - Check.
Rakshasa singers SPB adn SJ - having their saamrajyam in the song - Check.
Some electronica and different melody for the interludes - Check.
Lets pause the entire thing for a while and create an effect - check.
some awesome lyrics - check.

Only thing missing is a single carnatic violin and an aaalaap by raaja or TVG.
I think everything else is almost covered. 
It seemed like some1 asked Raaja "whats new in your music" and Raaja did the song to simply tell them ' TAKE THAT'.
The ultimate benefactor was P.Vasu and Santhana bharathy!!!
This is one song I want to listen before I die or loose my sense of hearing...

The song is the terrific number 'poonthaLirAda'  of 'panneer pushpangaL'

OK, let me make the next one also a quiz - but let me make the clue much easier this time!

This song was playing non-stop on my van thru out the weekend (my drive from Indy-Michigan and back and all other trips was this one single song).

So, please feel free to refer to the "repeat song" thread in our forum to get the song!

I have a pretty long post (i.e. one more on this song, here in this thread) in the making.

Besides the above clue, let me give another - to make it easy "குரலொலி இழந்த பாடகி - ஆசுகார் நாயகனை உயர்த்திய பெண்மணி".

Of course the clue was quite easy and immediately got cracked on twitter - there was a cryptic reply "Minmini' Smile

Well, the song of course is my oft-repeat special, poonguyilE (araNmaNaikkiLi).

I'll do the "multi-tweet" style post tomorrow, based on my musings during the Monday morning drive!
