I attended this show yesterday. Maestro was not expected there Smile It was a tribute to Maestro and how Maestro was inspired by Thyagaraja's compositions. This concert was headed by Subhashree Thanikachalam sponsored by GLAC Michigan. Good one. Nothing new for us, but it was well presented by Subhashree Thankichalam. I went especially to appreciate and acknowledge her passion, as she is one of the biggest fans of Maestro. While ST presented by taking each composition of Thyagaraja in a particular raagam and how Maestro added various moods in the same raagam in his compositions, Saindhavi and Hariyudan Naan folks (Niranjan, Karthik, Anush) sang the compositions. She did the raagam analysis in Abhogi, Keeravani, Bilahari, Charukesi, Hamsanandhi, Kedharam, Saaranga Tharangini, Shanmugapriya, VaraaLi, ThOdi etc. and finally ended with Kalyani. The medleys were good, especially in Keeravani and Kalyani.  They did swara analysis on the harmony portion of oru kiLi uruguthu (ku koo kukukoo...) and explained how each layer of harmony stayed true to the raagam Keeravani. She could have done more such medleys. She even went on explain how Maestro was strict in not diluting the raagam grammar (panthathi) by explaining the thaanam (and spacing - neraval) aspect in some of his compositions (ex. mOham ennum theeyil - Sidhubhairavi film).

It was quite interactive too. She started quizzing too. I answered few (even though I knew each one of them).
1. How many compositions did Maestro do in Rasikaranjani? There are only three. What are they?
2. How many compositions did Maestro do in Keeravani? Looks like it is 174. Wow!
3. What are the pathos songs in Keeravani?
4. What is the fun song of Maestro in SubhapantuvaraaLi?
5. Name a Oonjal song? (not a lullaby).
6. Name a folk song in CharukEsi?
7. SorgamE endraalum & Thendral vanthu ennaith thodu is composed in which raagam?

and lot more... While quizzing they also sang few compositions in those raagams as well, after someone answered.

Hats off to her unique initiative and the utmost passion she has for Maestro's music. Every time she spoke about his compositions, she never forgot to mention that Maestro is a pioneer in this and that. It was also great to see so many Maestro fans. A wonderful evening well spent.

I can never forget the songs that were aired regularly during that unexpected vacation, and along with songs like ‘Thennankeetrum thendral kaatrum’, ‘Ninaivile manaivi endru’, ‘Yaaradhu sollamal nenjalli ponadhu’, ‘Pothi vecha malligai mottu’, ‘Siricha kolli malakkuyilu’, ‘O vennilave vaa odivaa’, ‘Thendral ennai muththamittadhu’; ‘Maargazhi paarvai’ found place unfailingly in Pongum Poombunal.

The other enchanting SPB-SJ duet from this film, ‘Poo enbadhaa pon enbadhaa poo maalai neeye Radha’ (lyrics again by Vairamuthu) was another favourite among Radio Ceylon listeners.

Yes Suresh. There is solid reason to believe it is set to Paavani.

It is impossible to talk about the screenplay without the music and vice-versa. The depth in this film’s music places it right up there among the top of the table in my experience with Indian films. The numerous leitmotifs to the theme come when ‘Rohini’ is seen as Abiraami by Guna and the ‘divinity’, such an abstract thing/emotion, finds vent in the music so aptly that this author is lost for words. It plays when she is dead, in a gory way. It plays when he first spots her, in a temple. The theme gets fulfillment there. That entire stretch is screenwriting/music composing porn. Allow me to indulge. He is goaded by Janakaraj that Abiraami would come, “pippiripippiripee”, and there materializes a beautiful woman he sees as Abiraami. She spots him, casts a benign smile and walks away. He asks himself if she is Abiraami and follows her in the other direction. His head hits the bell, the signboard he hits points him to her, the screen dislodges a veil to shine the Sun on him and even the security Guard points his finger toward her. The stars, with the deities, animate and inanimate objects seem to align to tell him She is his Abiraami. The theme, playing in raga Sarangatharangini, changes scales to Paavani, as verses from Abiraami Anthaadhi begin. At ஆயகியாதி உடையாள், the camera pans to her feet. The line literally means Abiraami’s feet is the origin of everything and presents Battar there. Ilaiyaraaja and Kamal are firmly in fifth gear now.


The song begins. Stunning melody. Paavani, the raga, literally means remover of sins (interesting, because Guna helps steal from the temple the next day and is immediately repentant. Seeing ‘Abiraami’, he follows her, seemingly wanting her to show him the way out of his sins. Later in the film, as he takes Abirami away from his home, the loot from the Temple, in the form of கண்மலர்கள், briefly shines on the screen, as if saying all is forgiven). The rhythm pattern (thaaLam) operated by Ilaiyaraaja is Kandam (beat of 5, tha ka tha ki ta). Kandam is the beat used for Shiva thaandavam. The interlude is a brief reentry to another verse of the Anthaadhi which praises the jewels that stay firm on Abiraami’s breasts (முத்துவடம் கொண்ட கொங்கை – muthuvadam meaning pearl necklance and kongai meaning breasts) and her vagina that is beautiful like a cobra (நல்லரவின் படம் கொண்ட அல்குல் பனிமொழி வேத பரிபுரையே – nalaravam – nallapaambu – cobra; algul – vagina), she being of speech that cools us (paNimozhi), with all the Vedas present at her feet; and Raaja takes a brief detour to a pleasant Kalyani raga exactly as the film rolls to the filmy Abiraami’s breasts at முத்துவடம் கொண்ட கொங்கை, almost asking to take pleasure, and reverts back to Paavani from நல்லரவின், as Guna goes on a hallucination trip into a Shiva thaaNdavam with this Abiraami, ending with the cheNdai pouring its rhythm; a subversion of a devotion bordering on the erotic in the Anthaadhi to divine love here.


The beauty in the changing of scales from Sarangatharangini (ST) to Paavani is the difference is 1 note and a variation in another. SaRiGaMaPaDhaNi are the 7 swaras. But for Sa and Pa (which don’t have variants), RiGaMaDhaNi have 2 or more variants each. That way, Paavani has Ri1 and ST has Ri2. Not a big difference but the addition of Ga1 to Paavani (which ST does not possess) makes it a vivadi raga. Now vivadi ragas, especially those with with Ri1, are considered divine (in feel, mood, etc.). Now consider this. A mundane yet attractive Rohini (underlined by a melodious ST) becomes Abiraami to the lover/seeker and that is underlined by a divine Paavani as the song segues to Abiraami Anthaadhi. Insane genius. i guess the whole issue is simply becos, sharp things are not allowed in cabin. So the lesson to be learnt is, those taking broken pieces of தேங்காய் given from temple, they can either discard it or remove only the coconut out of the shell and carry! LOL

எந்தவித வருவாயும் இல்லாமல் வறுமைச் சூழலில் வாழ்ந்து வருவதாகவும், வாழ்க்கைய நடத்துவதற்கு நிதியுதவி வழங்கி காப்பாற்ற வேண்டுமென முதல்வர் ஜெயலலிதாவுக்கு வேண்டுகோள் விடுத்திருந்தார்.

IR's name probably appeared for the first time on film titles for varaprasAdam where Govardhanam was the MD (sometime back I posted the pic in some thread where it showed Raja as "udhavi" for isai).

His most popular song (perhaps) is "அந்த சிவகாமி மகனிடம் சேதி சொல்லடி"...

‘சகலகலா வல்லவன்’ படத்தில் கமலும், அம்பிகாவும் கணவனும், மனைவியுமாக நிலவு வெளிச்சத்தில் பாடுவது மாதிரி அமைந்த காட்சி ‘நிலா காயுது… நேரம் நல்ல நேரம்’ என்ற பாட்டு. வீட்டுத் தோட்டத்தில் தென்னை மரங்கள் சூழ்ந்திருக்க நிலா வெளிச்சத்தில் ஒரு கயிற்று கட்டிலில் இருவரும் கட்டி அணைத்துக்கொண்டு காதல் செய்வார்கள். 

அந்தப் பாடலில் இளையராஜா அவர்கள் முணுமுணுப்பு, முனகல் எல்லாம் வைத்திருப்பார். 

ஒளிப்பதிவாளர் பாபு அந்த நிலவுக் காட்சியை தத்ரூபமாக ஒளிப் பதிவு செய்திருப்பார். அந்தப் பாடலை எடுத்த பிறகு எடிட் செய்து, போட்டுப் பார்த்தோம். கமல், அம்பிகா இருவரது பாவனைகளையும் பார்த்தவர்கள் ‘‘இந்த முழு பாடலையும் சென் சாரில் வெட்டிவிடுவார்கள்’’ என்றார் கள். 

அதற்கு நான், ‘‘நிச்சயமாக சென்சாரில் கட் ஆகாது. அவர்கள் எந்த இடத்தில் ‘கட்’ சொல்வார்களோ அந்த இடத்தில் எல்லாம் நான் பூவையும், செடியையும் காட்டித்தான் படமாக்கியுள்ளேன். கமல், அம்பிகா இருவருடைய முக பாவனைகளைக் காட்டவில்லை. அதனால் நிச்சயம் இந்தப் பாட்டு சென்சார் அதிகாரிகளிடம் இருந்து தப்பித்துக்கொள்ளும்’’ என்று உறுதியாக சொன்னேன். அது மாதிரியே அக்காட்சி தப்பித்துக் கொண்டது.
