Yamuna Kalyani, aside from the interesting fact that this is a song on Rama written by one Yusufali, composed by Naushad and rendered by YesudasUsha wrote:DM,

Re: Ragas and Their Usages in Indian Popular Music
Yaman is the Hindustani version of our Kalyani. Slightly different. In fact, it is a major raga there like Kalyani is here, so much so that beginners are taught Yaman first. மொதல்ல யமன ஜெயிக்கணும் போலUsha wrote:DM,

Kalyani's swarasthanams as we saw earlier go:
Aarohanam: S R2 G3 M2 P D2 N3 S'
Avarohanam: S N3 D2 P M2 G3 R2 S'
Yaman Kalyani aka Yamuna Kalyani is just a little different coming as it does, Carnatically adapted from the North:
Aarohanam: S R2 G2 P M2 G2 P D2 N2 S'
Avarohanam: S' N2 D2 P M2 G2 M1 R2 S
Best aural example is Pandit Bhimsen Joshi and Balamuralikrishna in a Jugalbandi in Hyderabad sometime in the late 90s singing Yaman and Yaman Kalyani (Hindustani and Carnatic version of the same raga) for 10 minutes. It is pristine:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uWPFHYvGav4
Proper Carnatic exposition of this raga is Bhavayami Gopalabalam, Pibare Rama Rasam and Krishna Nee Begane Baaro. I absolutely love all 3 songs.
In cinema, we've had countless scores in Yaman/Yaman Kalyani.
Hindi: Kabhie Kabhie by Khayyam
Man Re by Roshan
Ehsan Tera Hoga Mujh Par by Shankar-Jaikishan. I love how Rafi sings the word Mohabbat some 6-8 times and gives a different emotion every single time.
Jab Deep Jale Aana by Ravindra Jain.
Tamil: Isai Kettaal Puvi Asaindhaadum by MSV.
Raaja's Oru Vaanavil Pole which is a superb inspiration off Kabhie Kabhie.
Again, Raaja's Yamunai Aatrile. Must doff the hat to Vaali for the way he brought in Yamuna in a song composed in Yamuna Kalyani by Raaja

Rahman's Varaaha Nadhi Karai Oram which is inspired from the Sufi song, Dama Dam Mast Kalandar
There are a few outstanding Sufi songs and ghazals in Yaman as well. Aaj Jaane Ki Zid Naa Karo is one of my favorites. So is Aao Balma which Hariharan used in a concert to lead to Ay Hairathe Aashiqui by Rahman which is Yaman too. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rNt_C8otwJ0 Rahman also brought the ghazal in his recent Coke Studio. Youtube lacks a class rendition of it. Remember one by Ustad Rashid Khan bur unable to spot it now. I'm sure there are countless more songs. But just sharing a few that just struck me off the head now.
Re: Ragas and Their Usages in Indian Popular Music
Usha ji brought a point via PM that Kabhie Kabhie could be Pahadi. She could be right. Oru Vaanavil Pole if I reckon correctly is Yaman Kalyani and hence I presumed Kabhie Kabhie is also YK. I could be wrong. Checked a website. It lists Kabhie Kabhie as Pahadi as well. http://chandrakantha.com/raga_raag/film_song_raga/pahadi2.shtml

And yeah, that's the best song in that Ghibran album. Fine lyrics too. periya thathuvamO, vArthai azhagO illa but words sit well and are harmlessly cute, if I could use the word. Well composed too. Earworm for the past few days.
Re: Ragas and Their Usages in Indian Popular Music
DM, thanks a lot for the detailed explanations of the swara system. I have a query. I have come across analysis claiming Ilavattam (My dear Marthandan) as Kalyani. I am not able to understand how that is, because the first line of pallavi itself seems to touch Da1 on the Dum Dum? Am I mistaken there, am I counting the notes wrong? If not, is still Kalyani? If not, endha raagam? Thanks in advance.
Note: I reckoned Middle C as Sa and counted from there for analysis.

Re: Ragas and Their Usages in Indian Popular Music
CK,
I am not trained so I can't identify a swara from a song with swara gnaanam and pinpoint. You have a point in that, the pallavi sounds a little different from Kalyani. And it is very possible that Raaja used a few anya swaras. This is film music and he is adlib to improvise. That said, the charanam is quite authentic Kalyani. This video where this gentleman plays the slide guitar of the lead melody of Ilavattam is beautiful and stripped off the orchestration, the Kalyaniness of the Kalyani in the song comes to the fore amazingly: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KKSXyEeTZOk

In charanam also, there is a D3 and a G2. There is certainly some of the flavour of Kalyani in charanam but he has mixed some notes. Not that it needs to be in A particular ragam only, anyway, was just curious how and why it is Kalyani. The moment I heard pallavi, there were so many minor notes hitting me (rather, that's what it felt like) so I was very curious how such a minor flavour had been obtained from Kalyani, which is all 'major', except for the M2.

Thanks for clarifying. Like I said, very possibly anya swaras. But quite hard for me to pinpoint what the exact ragas it leads to are. Easily possible that it graha bedhams into another ragam and comes back to Kalyani.
Re: Ragas and Their Usages in Indian Popular Music
I think the rough essence of Kalyani sticks, not counting those two notes, until we get to Kalyani maalai....where it again deviates.

Usha,
Sounds like Abheri. You can get the 'poo malayil or malligai' flavor in some places. The interludes move away from the ragam.
