This thread is a fantastic and memorable one. Superb analysis and dedication App ji  . The way you highlight the intricacies of his choice of words and at the same time also pointing out the not-so-great areas really makes the thread live upto its title, 'checks and balances'. Whatever, he definitely cannot be ignored when we talk about Raja's music. Mudhal Mariyaathai alone can equal to 100s of films he wrote lyrics for. I normally do not focus much on lyrics, but every word he wrote for this film is etched in my mind even that great 'போடா பொடிமட்ட' which you highlighted. Those short songs are my biggest favorites of all time. Through these songs, I can smell our land without going to our country. With Malaysia ANNan's voice, there can be no other film and songs which can match this classic.

Amazing effort and contributions App  . I'm a late entrant to this thread have to still catch up on lot of the posts. The level of analysis and the lyrical insights you provide cannot thank you enough Sir. Also, the way you have put things in perspective with respect to VM's lyrics and his collaboration will go a long way in clearing any misconceptions put forward by usual IR detractors that VM was key to IR's success. Mudhal Mariyadhai is one masterpiece of an album where someone like me (who never remembers lyrics past the pallavi) paid attention to and appreciated the lyrics. Looking forward to your posts about the rest of the songs.

There is some village innocence in the song. At the same time, there's also kuRumbu-adult stuff

That way, this song is a very contemporary one - of the 80's TN village - sweetly depicting a typical young country couple of those times - a sweet couple in love

Interestingly, the most irritating portion for me when listening to the audio had been replaced with a much more acceptable line on-screen, as I noticed ONLY TODAY
(That 'moonu nAL' samAchchAram)

Otherwise, the song is filled with natural flow of village lingo (nothing forced) and thoroughly enjoyable.

There're also plenty of uvamai uruvagams that are fitting to both the slang & melody - nothing sticking out (முத்தழகி, பூஞ்சோல, பூவு ஒன்னு, வண்டு வரும், ரத்தினமே, மல்லியப்பூ மாராப்பு)!

VM had served an ace here!

yeah.. funny - looking back - the entire veLLandhi - but vevagaaramaana approach by Bharathiraaja chaaracters is always a paradox..

The song wasn't there when I watched in theater at the time of release (the only movie that I watched on FDFS due to some fan club member at the hostel) - but portion of it seems to be on DVD and accordingly there are some youtube links - this one has some :



Though this song has the 'rAsA' name in the first line, it belongs to SJ IMHO. What a lovely singing!

As our focus is on pAdal varigaL in this thread, let us go there...(In any case, this song had been talked about 1000 times before and will be discussed many more times hereafter too, so let me not dwell too much upon other aspects on this post)

Very situational song - one that is supposedly the result of the declaration of one "வச்சிருக்கேன்" word!  A word that is equivalent of a tsunami in the concerned lives, families -why even the whole village! VM nicely captures it as "ஒரு வார்த்த சொல்லிட்டீங்க அது உசுர வந்து உருக்குதுங்க'!

That urukkam is the cited reason for sudden blossoming of strong feelings in the heart of the woman for the man. As one can see from the brief visuals, she connects that with all the little incidents that took place in the weeks and months prior, to find a pattern and build a tower inside! That much is expressed in the pallavi itself as "வந்து சொல்லாத ஒறவ இவ நெஞ்சோடு வளத்தா, அது தப்பான கருத்தா தண்ணீரில் எழுத்தா" - beautifully put, from the woman's PoV!

I guess the saraNams do not deserve to be there - neither in the song and accordinly nor in the movie, IMO. Fortunately, they don't seem to be in the video. Unfortunately, they are in the song.

Make no mistake about it - I love the saraNams, the sweet melody, great singing, nice orch - all are evergreen enjoyment! However, purely from the situational PoV, they are laborious

Part of the first saraNam is tolerable (அடடா எனக்காக அரும கொறஞ்சீக , தரும மகராசா தலயக்கவுந்தீக). Rest are all unnecessary - for e.g. பழச மறக்கலயே is outright nonsense. The whole platonic "relationship" is VERY RECENT but VM pens as if the girl knew the man right from childhood, spending time with him in the "Odappakkam" daily 

It's not just unfitting but also blemishing the whole character - as if there had really been illicit things going on between them

Then he goes on to justify, "களங்கம் வந்தால் என்ன, அதுக்கும் நெலான்னு தான் பேரு" - simply unacceptable, as if they both were already in an adulterous relationship but despite that he retained his namesake-moon-stature. Funny!

The less said the better about second saraNam, which travels along some typical cinema romance lines - as if these two were teens running around Odaippakkam. Except the alar thootRudhal part (கண்ணு காது மூக்கு வச்சு ஊருக்குள்ள பேச்சு), rest are all outright silly. Good that this was not inserted into the movie - thus reducing the poetic, lovely proceedings down to a 3rd rate kOdambAkkam-defined-pattikkAttu-movie.

Despite all my dislike for major portions of the saraNam(s), the pallavi alone elevates this song among the greats of TFM!

VM has to be praised for that!!

Anyways, I dont think I have heard more 'man vaasanai' lyrics narrating a story like this before ...VM is on solid ground here .. even awesome.
Though I never grew up in a village, the rusticity somehow appeals to me .. BR brought some kind of innocence into romance all the time whether there is physical aspect involved in it or not.. I think this is one of the reasons as teenagers we were all enamored of his work..

Yes, the nAttu mozhi is top class, without question! Unlike VM's later attempts with other composers, there is not a single "thiNiththa" feeling in MM songs!

OTOH, right from the time rAsA entered the scene, the maN vAsanai started in TFM in a nice way, IMHO. (annakkiLi songs started the trend early on. 16V too comes to mind - especially the 'manjakkuLichchu' song - though in TFM format, the nAttu vazhakku flows in effortlessly!)

That is, VM or no-VM

#129 vetti vEru vAsam, vedalappuLLa nEsam (mudhal mariyAdhai, MV/SJ)

Brilliantly placed in the movie, this song serves two purposes. One, the celebration of the marriage of a young couple. Two, the strong feelings currenly "under development" between the perusu & kuyilu - call it friendship, platonic love, whatever - but the inexplicable affection, "நேசம்", has never been so beautifully captured in TF or TFM prior!

I'm not very sure about the words in italics (ஒட்டுக்கிருச்சு / பொத்துக்கிருச்சு)! Any number of listens do not clearly identify them - negative marks to both MV & SJ for making them so unclear). In addition, most words I try to place there do not make sense in the sentence or context

While the superb phrase "வேருக்கும் வாசம் வந்ததுண்டோ" identifies the feelings the perusu develops at this inappropriate age, the mention of kuyilu as 'வெடலப்புள்ள" is somewhat too much (as the term denotes a girl of 12-15 age group, neither of the ladies in the song qualify). In kiru sir's language, "bug"

Also, while the song hits too many sweet spots with the feel, nAdan vazhakku etc, one soththakkadalai for me during each listen is "குண்டு வைக்கக்கூடாது" Something I've never heard of - anyone trying to "bomb" a sparrow's nest -yuck! Some weird, violent thinking by VM!

#130 poongAththu thirumbumA (mudhal mariyAdhai, MV/SJ)

One of the most popular songs of IR-VM combo - perhaps as popular as pon mAlaippozhudhu, andhi mazhai pozhigiRadhu or even more. In a way, this song has become a modern day ejjAmple for "பெருந்திணை" (not because the man is called 'perusu' but Thamizh ilakkiyam defined it as "porundhAkkAmam")

Why?

For one, age difference. Then there is this traditional "incompatibility" due to kulam / status etc, in addition to the fact that the man was already in a marriage. Unfortunately, though 'kAmam' was not originally intended in mudhal mariyAdhai, for some reason the public (especially the cine-field fellows) automatically assumed the involvement of that thingy. That's why one sees such depictions as this one in the famous film mozhi (produced by Prakash Raj)

Excellent wordsmith-ing in general, to fit a melody that was inspired from a symphony movement. Also, typical VM elements that fit a bedroom situation.

However, as I've pointed out earlier, there's some raw deal to muththam

Two abuses of that word in this song, one as a "sleeping pill" & another as an "expense"

That way, all the great work done by VM in this song gets discounted, to give him only a zero credit, IMHO.

#132 vandhanam vandhanam - ada indhiran vandhadhum (AN pAvam, IR)

A rare case of VM writing a title song sung by IR I think. Though there's no musicalaya cover, per our reference spreadsheet, this song is the only VM hit from AN pAvam while all other biggies were by Vaali & Kuruvikkarambai Shanmugam (kuyilE kuyilE / ennaippAdachchollAdhE / kAdhal kasakkudhaiyA)

Fast and enjoyable song where the words are nicely fit to the tune with unusually janaranjaga lyrics by VM!

Pandiyarjan  / rAsA combo had carefully placed pictures of politicians and Kamal Rajini in this video that is big balancing act considering the time of the movie! periya killAdinga dhAN!

Obviously one of the better-written numbers by VM!

#133 engE en jeevanE unnil kaNdEnE (uyarndha uLLam, KJY/SJ)

Back to a typical VM number of 80's - where he uses the typical TFM language of free-flow of vadamozhi words to meet the requirements of the "meter" and adds-in his typical innuendos

As the lines suggest, this has to be some 'recovery' song. (May be AVM wanted to use the TTT success formula of 'recovery from drug addiction' and possibly had 'recovery from some other addiction' in this movie : "கையில் தீபம் இருந்தும் நான் கண்ணில்லாமல் வாழ்ந்தேன்" - was it alcohol in this movie? Fortunately, escaped from going thru the misery of watching this flop)...

I've been posting every now and then that VM is an "anti-muththam" guy. Going by this song, he once again asserts his irritation by terming it as an irritable thingy. He almost calls it a punishment (முத்தம் போடும் வேளையில்) And to write such a line for Kamal on screen - totally out of sync

There's a complex mix of thoughts IMO - the boy starts feeling that the girl is life & goddess (jeevanE / deivamE), then the girl wants to show this motherly love / affection (deepam, annai pOla, vizhigaL) ; but suddenly, the song jumps into saththam, thollai, kalasam, kavasam, kAmam, bANam, kAyam, dhEham, sivandhu pOgum etc

What a dramatic transformation!

Very difficult to separate VM and vanmuRaiyAna kAmam!

Well, watched the youtube now (for the first time) and was surprised to see that all those terror terms got "censored off" !
 

In the second saraNam, two lines got replaced:

audio version:
காமபாணம் பாய்வதால் காயமாகுமே
கலசம் இங்கு கவசமாகும் காமன் அம்பு முறிந்து போகும்

video version:
காமன் பார்வை பார்ப்பதால் காதல் மீறுமே
கண்கள் இன்று கவிதை பாடும் கால நேரம் மறந்து போகும்

(p.s. There's a "track version" sung by IR that got retained on the cassette and had a lot of bus-time / teakkadai-time etc, much like 'nAnAga nAnillai thAyE')

#134 kAlaiththenRal (uyarndha uLLam, PS)

Extremely sweet PS number from the AVM-Kamal-Ambika movie #2 (Movie #1 was SKV with all songs by Vaali and a BO biggie. Like I mentioned in the previous post, this #2 of the same combo was a disaster)

VM performs fine here in his favourite territory of "describing the beauty of nature" and scores an effortless fifty. Interestingly, this one is about morning and per my observation in the GA thread, morning was GA's stronghold territory (putham pudhukkAlai & others). VM too is capable of doing honors to morning and here grabs the opportunity to do a decent job! (Of course it would have been more enjoyable if the repeat of rAgam oru rAgam & siRagugaL vENdum had been avoided and other phrases thrown in. Waste of musical space, IMHO. Repetition for emphasis / sweetness is good but these are not such phrases IMHO).

IR openly talks about the 'salavai nilA' business in the K TV discussion with R Sundarrajan!

Interestingly, one of my theories - that of many songs of 80's having the "iLaya" word was indicative of rAsA - gets ratified in this discussion

So, all those 'iLaya poovE', iLaya this iLaya that etc were VM's (or the team's) pugazhchchi of rAsA

#135 Gandhi dEsamE, kAval illaiyA (nAn sigappu manidhan, SPB)

VM's fav political territory and he placed some interesting phrases in the song. Especially the line : "சுதந்தர தேவி சுயநலப் புலிகளின் துணி துவைக்கிறாள்" is an agmark அறச்சீற்றம்!

The song got covered in the SPB-IR series, being a hit number from a Rajini film...(As confirmed by Murali sir in the hub, this movie / kAkki chattai / udhaya geetham all got released during the same time around Thamizh new year (i.e. Apr 14). That was what one would call competition

And all three scored big)! VM didn't have any in kAkkichchattai, had one song each in NSM & UG.

Couldn't locate the song alone in youtube, here is the movie - the song is at 1:36:00


Extremely powerful orchestration - coupled with the then passionate Indiraji death scenes getting cleverly inserted made this song goosebump stuff :

#136 thenRal vandhu ennaiththodum (thenRalE ennaiththodu, KJY/SJ)

Much talked about song (then and now, in forums and elsewhere)! One that is as enjoyable as the real thenRal itself!

VM does a commendable job here and was able to pretty much cover the content with non-AbAsam words / phrases 

That way, unlike some other popular hits of those days, this could be enjoyed without 'neLiyal' in any kind of company - even though it is loaded with kAdhal / kAmam

A personal favourite of mine - things can hardly go wrong when the combo is IR-KJY-SJ!

Like I mentioned many times before, the songs created a sensation with the theatrical trailer itself - even before the album got released or movie came out! Such terrific numbers that one cannot help but muNumuNuththufy! The movie became huge at BO (despite me getting irritated with the horrible movie, was happy that another IR-Sridhar movie made it big, after that all-VM ni-nithyA BO disaster)...

#137 oru nALil vaLarndhEnE (unnaiththEdi varuvEn, SJ / Ramesh)

TET was perhaps the last BO hit of Sridhar His immediate next release of 'unnaiththEdi varuvEn'  was no exception. It had two hit songs and one got penned by VM. This is perhaps one of the two songs by which singer Ramesh is known to the TFM lovers. (The other too got penned by VM and came out in the same year for the BR-Kamal movie).

This song is a 'kanavu scene' with the sole idea of giving some kiLukiLuppu to youths of that day. I happened to watch this with a bunch of hostelmates and can easily say that it didn't click that way. Actually the boys were booing actor Suresh for 'not being able to control his feelings'

#138 kaNNil enna kAr kAlam (un kaNNil neer vazhindhAl, SPB/SJ)

The song was featured in the SPB-IR thread with some bus-travel-route memories.

Interestingly, Murali Srinivas sir followed up with a nice post on this flop movie and related this to yAthrA of Malayalam. He has also specifically mentioned the VM lines in that post:

During the same time period, he had that phrase for bed room situation (kaidhiyin diary - ABC nee vAsi) and now here, for this pathos feel too same phrase, definitely weird
