Vinyl ("LP" record) covers speak about IR (Pictures & Details) - Thamizh

1978 must be a milestone year for the IR-BR combo, they didn't stop with the phenomenal success of BR's debut movie 16 vayathinilE but followed up with another 300 day kind of hit (I have seen newspaper ads those days) with two newcomers in lead roles

Radhika & Sudhakar had their debut in kizhakkE pOgum rayil and IR greeted them with phenomenal songs!
(Goundamani did the joLLu villain role in this film as RadhikA's akkA purushan)...I can't control my looking at Sudhakar's meesai...



The rear cover has the IR photo...note, BR is yet to make it to the album cover!

And, that combo didn't stop with two!

In the same year, they had another silver jubilee hit - with Kamal Sridevi!

A hat-trick in 1978 for BR!

IIRC, sigappu rOjAkkaL was a deepavaLi release...


Now, it was time for BR to make it to the vinyl's cover :-) Also, it appeared they signed up with INRECO around this time! (All the prior covers were EMI's and this shows INRECO logo. I have a red color INRECO CD that has the 'ninaivO oru paRavai' song)

As mentioned in a prior post, right now I'm working on getting things from this one place ASAP (copyright issue could wipe that site out as Wizzy feared)...so, I won't be able to stick to this chronology thingy strictly.

That music temple site has a lot of record cover pictures for Priya.

First of all, the first TFM STEREO album had to be initially released in two 45 rpm disks (4 songs in one, 1 in another with a repeat).

Plus Sridevi swimsuit / Singapore pics etc.

In addition, they've also found a record that had both Priya & 6-60 varai :-)

So, 8 images in total! Let me get them one by one here...

#1 Possibly the front cover of the first disk - featuring Rajini & Sridevi (hEy pAdal onRu scene, I think)


#2 Lists the four songs, has the pictures of IR, SP Muthuraman, Panju Arunachalam
(sree rAmanin sree dEviyE song is missing in this disk, so they needed another disk for that alone)


#3 Some movie screenshots, Singapore viLambarams I think...


#4 The famous Sridevi poster (swimsuit) that was on every wall those days in towns


#5 The second disk's front page (some generic pictures)


#6 The song listing of second disk - one repeat plus the climax song

Now, 1978 is the time Rajini's career best (acting-wise) came out - Mahendran's debut movie muLLum malarum.

The back cover, as usual, has the IR pic! Only four songs, the title song could not be accommodated in the 4-song-disk :-(

Well, it has come back and I've re-started my gleaning...1978 continues...

kARRinilE varum geetham - one of the biggest radio hits of those days with SLBC having at least one song each day those days

The front cover has nothing significant, except some listless stills from the movie:



OTOH, the back cover has the pictures of IR / PA / SPM...and lists only four songs (so there's no mention of the one plum had been searching for, the elusive PS version of kaNdEn engum...I've never heard it and wonder if it really exists)...Regardless, what a lovely, lovely album it is!

Here comes a not-so-much-talked-about movie.

Since none of the songs instantly ring a bell, I wanted to listen to them prior to posting the cover pictures.

This one is a lovely SJ-PJ number, frequently played on radio those days...

Definitely never listened to the other three numbers One interesting thing about the album is, it has a L R Eswari song, one of the very few she sang for IR! (In the same song, MV sings in a 'AhA vandhuruchchoo' style changed voice)..

So, let me pick a Sudhakar film where IR did all male playback

I may be telling this for the nth time but can't help it - a song which IR himself PUBLICLY DECLARED AS HIS FAVOURITE until that time!

This has that evergreen KJY number - fantastic, phenomenal + other adjectives!

Regular on SLBC those days and one simply melts listening to KJY in this number - EdhO ninaivukaL, kanavukaL manadhilE malarudhE!

One of KJY's top ten duets, without question!

Amazing work!. Brings backs lot of nostalgia looking at the covers. Looks like from the songs listed on those movies, still there are some unheard songs. Excited to listen to all them this evening (if available). Thank you App for taking time and documenting these rare covers.

Majority of them are at thiraippAdal website (with varying degree of quality, though...often with "needle sound").

If you looked closely at the 6-60 cover for tracks (which is a joint one with Priya), there's this "title music"

This gives insight as to how much focus such musical elements started getting in the TF field, after the arrival of IR. (Unfortunately, that title music is not there in thiraippAdal website...may be the musicalaya site hosts it, need to search for that...or the movie itself may be on youtube, with the title music that was possibly so special that it found a place on the disk).

Oh! That was a great find App. Let me see if I can find that one.

A couple of rAsA specials - actually "musicals" now!

First 'azhagE unnai ArAdhikkiREn' directed by Sridhar. nAn padam pArthadhillai but seen songs on youtube

nAnE nAnA with that sweet guitar phrases and delectable percussion sounds was a rage among TN (despite teacharammA). Rest were very popular everywhere too!

(Interestingly, this disk must have got released much later - it has a different kind of IR photo...the sAmiyAr type...also, two albums, Rajini's garjanai is featued as well)

The second musical is 'pagalil oru iravu' of I V SasiyEttan...featuring Sridevi in an "innocent" role

The disc cover must have been damaged and salvaged...and it has only two songs (the lone PJ number & the ever-green iLamai enum poongARRu)...the movie also had three more wonders : ponnAram poovAram, thAmtha dheemtha Adum uLLam pAdum kAviyam, thOttam koNda rAsAva)

Just noticed that the 'வந்தது நல்லது நல்ல இடம், இன்றுடன் செல்வது தேவனிடம்...சூப்புக்குக் கோழியும் வந்ததக்கா' song in garjanai got penned by Kavingar

Lakshmi (latchumi in Thamizh) is another album that we remember today only for rAsA...in spite of the album cover showing the illustrious Sridevi.

Possibly the first duet of IR, thenna maraththula thenRaladikkudhu (definitely his first with PS) happened in this album.

Now, let's post the covers of three NT albums.

In two of these covers, one has to struggle to read the song names and credits In the third one, it's like a treasure hunt to locate IR's pic...

First, kavarimAn - that had the sweet 'pooppOlE un punnagaiyil' (the disk also has another movie called 'paruvam oru pAdam' which I don't think was by IR...)

The second one is 'nAn vAzha vaippEn' with that sweetie 'endhan pon vaNNamE' by TMS.

It had KJY doing the 'AgAyam mElE pAthALam keezhE' for "Michael" Rajini but the album cover misses the current super *.

Also, writer pA rA recently claimed that someone had sent him the unofficial / rejected TMS version of 'ennOdu pAdungaL, nalvAzhththup pAdalkaL'...the official version is SPB's and that's on the cover!
