A young and dashing Anil Kapoor (referred to as just Anil in the credits) was a bundle of energy in this movie. Some fresh thoughts and shots in this movie - do watch it if you get a chance. The audacity of MR to ask BaluMahendra helm the camera (who did his part brilliantly and also introduced the young MR to the Maestro) .

MR impressed the maestro so much that apart from reducing his own remuneration for the score, he was also instrumental in getting MR his second film (Unaru) and Idhayakoil in Tamil later.

This is a new age sounding song by the Maestro for Aa Dinagalu (2007) a movie based in mid 80s. A very unusual story based on true incidents where a youngster's romance became the root cause for the demise of a dreaded gangster in the city.

One of the very few Kannada songs sung by the man himself (perhaps the very first? Not sure!)

P.S: The Maestro performed this number in his last Bluru concert in Nov 2019

One of the reasons why our man composes terrific numbers in Kannada could be due to the fact that his introduction to a film based group happened to be with GKV who he assisted and was involved in the process of creating tunes for Kannada movies.

Apparently, the kannada producers had a peculiar term 'Uccha haadu' (could be roughly translated as a song that prompts the audience to visit the toilet for a bio break - haadu means 'song' btw) which they liberally used to depict a song which they thought as not worth it! This term was liberally used during discussions when tunes were performed and decided on.

That could have led him to understand the pulse of the audience of better and in the process also helped him give great numbers as he would never want his work to be classified likewise!

Anyway, this is just my thought and might or might not be why he gave great music for his Kannada projects. They are few in number, but stand out to this day.

Some of my friends were very disappointed that he did not perform more Thamizh numbers, but namakku avar kooda spend pannuna time - pure gold dust! I thoroughly enjoyed every minute and did not even take a bio break for the 4 hours .....

Was pleasantly surprised at how fluent SPB was in Kannada ...our man tried speaking in Kannada, but found it a little difficult to be honest. I think his Telugu is way better.

Superb.....our man's trumpets usually stand out because of the chords (accidentals mostly) that he plays in the accompanying synthesizers and guitars, not to forget the bassline.

Having posted the songs of the two blockbusters & chart-busters - Geetha & Nee Nanna Gellalare, this is the next venture of IR in Kannada:

Movie #6: Geetha (1981)   Director: Shankar Nag    Lyricist: Udayashankar    Singers: SJ, SPB.

A jackpot for SPB +SJ!  

SN would have worked more with IR, if not for that fatal accident.  Strangely co-incidental is his movie "Accident" which is a song-less movie, with IR scoring the Background Music.  Eerily similar to the much-later Salman Khan's real life crime, almost like a harbinger.

The actress (Padmavati Rao) is the sibling of Arundathi Nag (Shankar Nag's wife & screenplay writer of this movie).  Arundathi Nag could be seen in some episodes of SN's stunning TV series: Malgudi Days and in movies like Accident, Dil Se, Paa etc.



27. Jotheyali is of course an anthem, that later became hits in Tamil and Hindi as "Vizhiyile mani vizhiyil" in Nooravadhu Naal AND "Jaane do naa" in Paa.

28. Kelade nimageega, a tribal-themed stage song, became "Devadhai ilam devi" which itself is another sober, heart-wrenching song.

29. Santhoshakke is the un-Official party song!

30. My favourite number is Nanna jeeva neenu (which I remember sharing in Song of the day? thread) which is enough to melt even the Himalayas!!    That song is eXtremely close to my heart and soul.  That tune was later re-used for "Devan thandha veenai" (in a happier tone) in Unnai Naan Sandhiththen movie.

Next up is: #14. Accident (1984) movie WITHOUT songs, but with minimal "under-lining" kind of Background Score.  

The movie is a very good one.  I adore Shankar Nag more as a creator/film-maker than a "hero".  Some coincidences here.  Shankar Nag dies in an unfortunate accident just 5 years from the time this movie was made.  And, the eerie similarity to the real-life incident involving Salman Khan, 18 years later.  How relevant is the movie, even in the post-millennium!

It is available only on YouTube but without subtitles, which is unpardonable in this day and age.  I would still suggest watching it; you will understand, given the concept.

#15. Ajeya (1985)

Months later, it was remade in Tamil as "Pudhir" with the same leading cast.

As usual, it seems like an average movie with songs' visuals being poorly picturized.  But the songs are fine to listen to ("a musical hit").  Probably, the director father was trying to launch his son more as a "hero" than an actor!

Remade in Tamil as Manidhanin Marupakkam, which itself is a remake of the original Malayalam movie Nirakkoottu featuring Mammootty.  

The songs are top-notch in Tamil (and Kannada), when compared to the Malayalam ones by Shyam.
