Btw heard paradesi songs once. onnum manasula pathiyavE illai. Not even as good as Avan Ivan (oru malaiyOram is beautiful). Its a sin to compare this with the ilangaathu veesuthE / Adada ahangaara / kaNNil paarvai / engE sellum intha paathai etc., GVP's amateurishness is getting exposed with each and every release this year. Yet to score a hit after aadukalam if we discount a semi-hit in mayakkam enna?! innum romba pakkuvappadanum to score for biggie's films.
On the milliblog review, hilarious how he says he really does not like any song but gives a verdict saying GVP has delivered to Bala's lofty standards. But did he *really* deliver?

Re: Recently Watched
There is so much of media manipulation going on these days - I see claims about Thuppakki being a big hit in Telugu, when in reality it is a washout. Yes, I said no Box Office discussion here but I am talking about something that is far more noxious - heroes are being built up by the industry insiders, media accomplices, and general fans are falling for it.
This is not surprising - this year has been so bad that thaRkuRis like Thangar Bachchan, in a misplaced sense of victory, proclaimed that the hero system is dying and his diwali mobile phone movie will end the Heroes' Dominance for ever.
Unfortunately, it seems the hero community has closed ranks, and all the dependsnts of star system seem to have got to gether and ensured that the diwali release big hero movie doesnt get a bad name.
I have spoken about it before - sometimes Word of Mouth hit is euphemism for "two people have no topic to speak; latest cinema is easiest to talk about and in random cases, two such gnana soonyams just telling each other latest IT padam nalla irunchuppa" spreads and people keep repeating this for the sake of polite conversations and it becomes established fact.
And this perpetuates the hero myth and Opening mass etc.
People should stop lionising Box Office results, and stop being proud about this. illainA indha industry uruppadavE uruppadAdhu, Sadly, even when people reject mass movies for a long time, one hit is enough to turn the tide back to mass movies.

Similarly, there is a huge media machine at work to lionise GVP, Sinna Mayyi etc. Partly, trace this back to Nithyasree's recent question to ARR in the Jaya TV interview "ippollAm ninga raaga based songsE kudukkaradhillaE? We are disappointed"
Looks like the elite group which controls media perception, is behind GVP. Soft power - 90sla IR commercially overnu 1993lErundhu propoganda paNnina adhE kottam dhAn.
(In reality, till 1995, IR had huge commercial hits - just they were not Shankar, Rajini, Mani movies. )

MovieCrow is tarnishing Thuppaakki and also in sidelines, mankatha too! Imagine posting all this in hub!!

So, did Thuppakki join the 100 Crore Club?
On the revenue side, the topic of wild speculations by many rookies has been whether Thuppakki had crossed Rs. 100 Crores.
A number of wild assumptions have been made to come up with highly incorrect gross figures. In fact, leading Box Office pundits/experts have publicly questioned the veracity of such erroneous box office reports.
Mankatha - Examples of doctored Box Office Collections from the Past
On a side note, similar box office drama happened last year for Mankatha when a number of leading print and online media firms reported Mankatha's had collected Rs. 130 Crores based on a casual tweet from a fake Sun Pictures twitter account.

It seems the man congratulated the Naalaya iyakunar guy who made "Pizza"? I hadn't seen a single promo, trailer or image of that film. Going to have to watch it considering the favourable reviews. But when all these celebs keeps praising the film unanimously, you begin to doubt..

Life of Pi (2D) - A little above my expectations - the happenings kept me interested for the most parts. I watched it in 2D (many shots were visually arresting) but could imagine that it would have been fantastic in 3D. Authenticity was a joke but didn't matter all that much (unlike Slumdock). Flasafy parts were in the order of "spicy" in Chinese food, just tickles you. nothing in the movie to blow you away apart from the fact that it's difficult to 'see' that they haven't actually shot all along with a real tiger in the flesh. Irrfan as usual was effortless :superb:
P.S: I can't fucking believe people going gaga over the "Tamil"(?!) lullaby by Bombay Jaishree!

Pizza - The twist didn't work but could take a few positives from the movie - quite competent and consistent performances.

English Vinglish Ajith version during the weekend (from the web).
Sridevi makes this movie watchable (i.e. despite my wife frequently commenting about her "disfigured nose due to surgery" )
One thing I always admired in her is appearing "effortless" regardless of whatever role given to her. She's a natural! (Though it was funny to see the woman who was THE laddu of movies in yesteryears ended up MAKING laddoos in this film...kAlam seyyum viLaiyAttu )

Shakespear meets sasi Kumar in sundara pandian.
Sasi kills the bard in the climax.
Had better sense prevailed, we would have had our own Julius Caesar to stand against Macbeth of the north.
Possibility squashed by incessant pandering to south side caste dynamics and over focus on Caesar instead of Brutus and co.
But from a script perspective quite bhagyarajesque and enjoyable.

Oru Varisu Uruvagirathu
Never heard of the movie. Hero, appo ulla newcomer. Prathap plays innocent father to an ungrateful son. Typical pathetic fathers in Visu movie, but Prathap's quirkiness made the role interesting. Actually watched it till finish despite the poor man's K.B film feel to it. Some good funny dialogues here and there. Didn't see the credit, but music did sound like a forgotten MSV.
Anbin Mugavari.
Ithuvum pAthiyilirunthu pArthen. Know the songs, not the movie. Probably aNNan and SR's first combo, except they are the bad guys. Looking at the prominence given to the bad guys, I had a feeling that this is a Manivannan movie, wikipedia confirmed it.

Re: Recently Watched
I have seen Kamal saying that he was inspired by Ardh Satya, the hard-hitting Govind Nihalani movie(Nihalani seems to be a closely watched person for Kamal - he remade Drohkaal as Kurudhipunal as well). However I dont think it is a remake of Ardh Satya - I think the angry young inspector with angst and moral outrage is the only element that is common to both. Maybe, IV Sasi also was similarly inspired by Ardh Satya for Aavanazhi.
Inspector Balram, the protagonist of Aavanazhi, was so popular with Malayalees that a movie of that name was made in the 90s by Sasi. And he didnt stop at that - in mid 2000s he tool another character played by Mammotty in another movie, a smuggler, and made a movie called Balram vs Taradas.
An interesting concept, that. How would it be to have a Johnny vs Alex Pandian, Appu vs Nandu or something like that?

Re: Recently Watched
Watched Poda Podi with zero expectations.
Not bad actually. The best aping of bolly film culture perhaps. Loved the way how everything went on in a lethargic manner except in the middle when they switched gears by killing an infant child. Really?!!! The film failed whenever it wanted me to take it seriously. And the final conflict of Salsa Vs Kuththu was so sabbaa.
Simbhu is at his best (note *his*) when he wears his nonchalant hat. And it was refreshing to see a *real* girl character and Varu did quite well. Some scenes were genuinely funny:
-Simbhu Vs Mojo scenes
-One of the episode names was vaaya kuduththu ____
-Some great choice of songs (ada machchamulla, ponmeni, aadiya aattam enna, I am a KUTHU dancer)
-Varu explains the importance of dance - (Dance is not a joke, it's an art - oviyam)
-Parody on simbhu's dance movements
Horrible songs/BGM. Not that I expected anything better.
One time multiple sittings-la paakkalaam
